Medvirkende:Bjarke Calvin Vinding, stifter, DucklingLinks:Duckling https://www.duckling.co/da

After 4 years of extended drought, spring and summer rains finally provide relief to the US and Canadian prairies, but what does it mean for the fall flight? Dr. Scott Stephens joins co-hosts Chris Jennings and Dr. Mike Brasher for a mid-July update on breeding habitat conditions across the prairies and boreal forest. Because much of the rain came after ducks had settled and managers expect a relatively small breeding population count, waterfowlers probably shouldn't expect a banner crop this fall. Nevertheless, renesting and brood survival should benefit, and wetland conditions heading into fall will be better than they've been in years.www.ducks.org/DUPodcast

This passion has continued down the decades with swimming and running becoming my Favourites for many years, enabling me to qualify for the GB Age Group Teams in 2004 in both Aquathlon and Sprint/Standard Triathlons. Here I am 20 years on still competing for GB at Aqua Bike (Middle Distance) and with a strong desire to requalify for GB Aquathlon as my “grumbling” knee has been behaving itself recently, thanks to consistent Strength and SMART training. My events this year will be Qualifiers for the 70-74 Age Group - I can't wait!My sport has enabled and encouraged me to work my way up the coaching ladder, from swim coaching in the 1980's to BTF Level 3, which prompted me to set up a few businesses over the years - Ducklings to Dolphins Swim School in Reading, which is still running 35 years on, and Tri50, a Triathlon coaching business for the over 50's!! My Triathlon coaching has inspired me to maintain my fitness levels, as I fully appreciate competing at my age is more about maintaining a healthy outlook on Life, and staying injury free. I have been very fortunate in winning many International and European medals along the way, I think my tally is 12!! A few more would be welcome, I will apply my coaching knowledge and experience to help this happen!! Freshwater is a basic requirement of all birds, but it can be in short supply during extreme drought and in marine environments. In these situations, how do birds cope, can they drink salt water, and how might it affect their health? Dr. Sarah Gutowsky, quantitative wildlife biologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, joins Dr. Mike Brasher to discuss the adaptations that birds use for helping overcome the challenges and stresses of saltwater. From salt glands that remove salt from the blood to extraction of freshwater from food and behavioral changes to access dietary fresh water, we learn that birds are quite skilled at dealing with salty systems.www.ducks.org/DUPodcast

Known by many names – sprig, pinny, bull – but unmistakable in appearance, the northern pintail is one of North America's most recognizable, graceful, and well-studied duck species. Unfortunately, much of that attention was garnered because of dramatic population declines and the mystery surrounding it. In Memory of Karen Davis: Chicken or Broiler, Cow or Steer, Owner or Guardian? by Karen Davis at UPC-Online.org Original post: https://www.upc-online.org/thinking/140501_liberating_the_language_of_animal_abuse.html *************** The world lost an amazing advocate and educator when Karen Davis, founder of United Poultry Concerns (UPC) “passed away peacefully on the morning of November 4, 2023 at the United Poultry Concerns sanctuary, surrounded by her beloved birds,” UPC announced, pledging to “continue her vision and legacy through our sanctuary and vegan advocacy.” Karen Davis was an icon. She was instrumental in my vegan journey. I learned to understand, love, admire, and appreciate the amazing birds she dedicated her life to educating people about, and am honored to be able to share some of her teachings on the podcast. Many times it was difficult to narrate her articles as they were bringing me to tears. Other times her articles would fill me with joy as I read about the amazing social lives of these precious innocent, defenseless individuals who deserve to be protected and respected. Karen was President and Founder of United Poultry Concerns, a nonprofit organization that promotes the compassionate and respectful treatment of chickens, turkeys, ducks, and other domesticated birds. She created an amazing, open-air, covered sanctuary in Virginia to house and care for them. She is the author of numerous books, essays, articles and campaigns, and host of the Thinking Like a Chicken podcast. I hope we can all step in to help fill the gap in chicken and turkey advocacy left by her passing. If you'd like to listen to past episodes highlighting some of Karen's brilliant work, check out the following. It's amazing to see just this tiny subset of her contribution. Let's all band together and continue to educate ourselves and advocate for these birds.

Many people have thought about raising chickens and most of them have been successful doing so. But have you given any thought to raising ducks? All ducks belong to the Anseriformes order, a biological group that contains ducks, geese and swans. Ducks are generally smaller and shorter-necked than either swans or geese. They have many economic uses, being farmed for their meat, eggs, and feathers (particularly their down). The head and wing feathers of drakes (males) are more colorful than in females, with male ducks typically having larger heads. Ducks generally only have one partner at a time, although the partnership may only last one year. Ducks don't use nesting boxes or roosting bars. They are perfectly content to bed down in straw on the floor of a chicken coop or shed or other secure structure and then will make their own nest in a corner to lay their eggs in. Ducks do have predators. Nests and ducklings can be raided by land-based predators such as foxes, or large birds, such as hawks or owls. While people may allow them to free range during the day, they really need to be locked into a coop or other strong structure at night. Backyard Ducks don't need a pond and can be perfectly happy with a kiddie pool. They do need a water source deep enough to submerge their heads into to help them swallow their food. Ducks eat grasses, aquatic plants, fish, insects, small amphibians, and worms. Ducklings should only be fed un-medicated feed. But bear in mind that ducks can be messy. They tend to make a water mess around their tub, as they go back and forth from the feed to the water, wetting the feed in their mouth with the water to help them swallow it. Ducks can be wonderful backyard birds to raise as you enjoy their eggs as well as their personalities. Join Cathy Bruce on Nature Calls: Conversations from the Hudson Valley to learn more! Chris and Emily were thrilled to sit down and talk with Davina Morgan-Witts, the Founder and Publisher of BookBrowse. Founded in 1998, BookBrowse is one of the earliest independent online book resources. Davina and her team of editors and reviewers are committed to being “Your guide to exceptional books.” If you are not yet familiar with BookBrowse, check it out. It is a helpful and fun resource for solo readers and book clubs. Since our last episode, Emily was on the road again and visited two public libraries in Maine. The Curtis Library in Brunswick had a Robert McCloskey exhibit featuring his books Blueberries for Sal, Time of Wonder, One Morning in Maine, Burt Dow Deep-Water Man, and Make Way for Ducklings. She also browsed the Wiscasset Public Library, which claims to be “the oldest continuous circulation library in the country.” (We understand such claims are dicey in the library world and so encourage you to research the matter for your own biblio-edification if you so desire.) Meanwhile, back in Connecticut, Chris enjoyed several Couch Biblio Adventures. She watched Eye of the Needle via Kanopy, a 1981 adaptation of Ken Follett's novel of the same name; the first episode of Lessons in Chemistry an Apple TV series based on the novel by Bonnie Garmus; and The Fall of the House of Usher, Mike Flanagan's new horror mini-series on Amazon Prime that's an homage to several of Edgar Allan Poe's classic tales. And we have been reading some great books! Emily is currently reading C. Pam Zhang's LAND OF MILK AND HONEY, a dystopian novel, while Chris is following Dante's rise to the Light of God's Divine Love via THE PARADISO. Some of the books we discuss include COUNTRY PLACE by Ann Petry, AFTERLIFE by Julia Alvarez, MY ROOMMATE IS A VAMPIRE by Jenna Levine, THE QUICKENING by Elizabeth Rush, THE PURGATORIO by Dante Alighieri, AND THE GOTH HOUSE EXPERIMENT by SJ Sindu. We hope you enjoy this episode. As always, if you have any questions or comments, find us on social media or email us at bookcougars@gmail.com. Happy Reading! Chris & Emily

It's spring, and a female duck swims across a pond with ducklings in tow. Some of the youngsters might not be her own. Wood Ducks and others may lay some of their eggs in other ducks' nests — or in the nests of other kinds of ducks, like Common Mergansers and goldeneyes. Biologists call this nest parasitism or egg dumping. Perhaps it's a kind of insurance against the loss of a nesting female's own eggs or brood. Hooded Mergansers, like this one, are frequent recipients of eggs from other species. It's a good bet that mother duck has at least one – and maybe more – foster ducklings.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. Bible Reading: Psalm 91:1-4; Zephaniah 3:17; Romans 8:38-39Madison loved walking down to the pond with her mom and watching the ducks. She especially enjoyed watching the mama duck with her ducklings. She loved how they always seemed to swim in a row right behind their mama--cute little brown and yellow fuzzballs.Madison wished that just once she could catch one of the ducklings and hold it, but the mama duck wouldn't let her get close. "Why won't the mama duck let me hold one of her ducklings?" Madison asked her mom."Madison, you know you shouldn't try to touch wild animals," Mom told her. "The mama duck knows that too. She doesn't want anything to happen to one of her babies. She's protecting them, just like Dad and I watch out for you." Mom squeezed Madison's shoulder. "Did you know that the Bible tells us we're protected under God's wings? That's a beautiful illustration that helps us understand how much God loves us."Madison sat with her mom and watched the ducks for a while longer. On the walk back, she jumped in line behind her mom and waddled like a little duck. She and Mom giggled the rest of the way home."What are you two giggling about?" Dad asked when they walked in the door."We're being little ducks--waddle, waddle!" Madison replied. "Dad, did you know that there's a Bible verse that talks about God protecting us under His wings? Now every time I see the mama duck protecting her ducklings, I'll think of God's protection for me."Dad smiled. "I love how God gives us such great illustrations in the Bible. His Word is full of verses that show us how much He loves us and how He is always watching over us."Madison nodded. "Sometimes I can hardly believe how much God loves me. He even loves me when I mess up.""That's right," said Dad. "Jesus died for us so our sins could be forgiven, and He is always with us, no matter what." That night, after Madison went to bed, she prayed and thanked the Lord for loving her so much and for always being with her. She also thanked Him for creating such cute little baby ducks. Then she fell asleep with a smile on her face. -Lisa FullerHow About You?Have you ever watched a mama duck and her ducklings? The mama takes great care in protecting her babies, and the babies always make sure they follow right behind her. God takes great care in protecting us too. Jesus died and rose again to save us from sin and death, and He promises to always watch over us.
