Actress Juliette Lewis “lost her anonymity” with the movies. Movies you've probably seen. Cape Fear, Natural Born Killers, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, From Dusk Till Dawn. She's a visceral, singular performer, untethered to convention. This was true in 1989 and even more true in 2020. But it's what unfolds off-screen that Lewis keeps returning to these days. The larger, existential considerations one has as both a human and an artist. Ping-ponging between the past and present, we discuss the insanity of fame as a teenager, actress Karen Black's enduring influence, the passing of her father and how music (both her own and others) changed her life.
Crispin Glover is known for portraying eccentric characters on screen, such as George McFly in Back to the Future (1985), Layne in River's Edge (1986), Bobby McBurney in What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), the Thin Man in Charlie's Angels (2000) and its sequel (2003), Willard Stiles in the Willard (2003), Grendel in Beowulf (2007), Phil Wedmaier in Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) and The Knave of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland (2010). He currently stars in the Starz television series American Gods (2017–) as Mr. World From writer/director Roger Avary, the Oscar®-winning writer of Pulp Fiction and Killing Zoe, comes Lucky Day, an explosive crime saga about a paroled safe-cracker and his family confronting a psychotic hit-man out for revenge. Lucky Day stars Luke Bracey, Nina Dobrev and Crispin Glover and will be playing in select theaters and everywhere On Demand on Friday, October 11 from Lionsgate.

After last week's harrowing journey into "Hereditary," we decided to lighten it up a little this week with the 1988 horror-adjacent comedy "Beetlejuice." One note: we had mentioned making this a kid-friendly (no swearing episode) but...we did not. Sorry, it's explicit. Special topics for your consideration include: Pittsburgh (and national) treasure Michael Keaton, utilizing this film's therapeutic qualities, questionable Halloween costume ideas, "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," consequences for being a grosso and a shocking discovery about the screenwriter of this movie. Yinz into Tim Burton? Somehow we've only managed to do one other film of his: Episode 106- "Sleepy Hollow." Into Geena Davis?? Check out Episode 103- "The Fly." We've got some stuff to promote this week! First, our sponsor, Squamous Studios-- a design and art studio who create super cool tabletop RPGs, particularly in the horror genre. They'll be running a Kickstarter for their newest game, Arkham Relics Hunt, beginning May 2nd. Go see what they are doing at www.squamousstudios.com Also, wanna see us live? You can catch us at Rate/Review/Subscribe/Imbibe on May 7th, 7pm at Spirit in Pittsburgh. We'll be celebrating the first anniversary of our pals, the Ghoul on Ghoul podcast. They are throwing a party with a bunch of rad PGH podcasts to celebrate, plus dancing with DJ MB of In Bed by Ten Dance Party, a local maker raffle, tarot readings, and more! Have you seen this one? Samuel L. Jackson is this week's actor of the week. Dom is bummed about his 5am shift starting up again at work and James is excited about Furious 7. James tries to get back at Dom in Moovia by giving him more questions than he can handle. And our reviews of The Iceman and What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
Last episode we went INTO THE WOODS for a fairy tale orgy, on this episode we tell another fairy tale… that Johnny Depp was once a serious actor and not a cartoon character, as he is in his latest film MORTDECAI. We look at two of our favorite performances of his in WHAT’S EATING GILBERT GRAPE and DONNIE BRASCO. Joining us for this episode will be a Johnny Depp fan in Britt from the site Eclectic Pop, who will attempt to keep the Depp bashing from Shane and myself to a minimum.
Special guest Dylan Kenin joins the dudes as they travel back to a simpler time when people played trumpets. Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" is reviewed, followed by a revisit of Little Leo's star turn in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape". Pete also goes on assignment for Artist's Loft, as he records FOM's first in-the-field discussion with friend of the podcast Troian Bellasario regarding "Upstream Color".
Hoo boy. Memorial Day musta done something to the boys; they barely remember how to run the show (if they ever knew). But they've lazed and stumbled through another episode, all for your listening pleasure! This week, they face another Geek Challenge: Paul has challenged AJ to watch What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and in turn, AJ has challenged Paul to watch The Royal Tenenbaums. Both films are about dysfunctional families trying to reach beyond their ways, which they are very much set in. They're different films, but it kind of works. One finds ennui in a small rural town; the other, in the sprawling New York home of a special family. One has Johnny Depp back when he was still trying, the other Gene Hackman pre-retirement. And at more than one point, a throwdown threatens to break out. Plus, AJ talks about Dan Harmon's firing from Community and his first-ever camping trip; and Paul speaks on Snow White and the Huntsman and the first annual Alabama Phoenix Fest. Next: John Carter. Prepare for bloodshed.
Brad and Jason lament the fact that there's no holiday celebrating time travel. It's still too early to talk about Christmas movies. "Don't question me on my Thor lore, dude." Hollywood would stop making crappy movies if the American public stopped watching them. Leonardo DiCaprio should maybe stick to simpler roles. Jason likes movies with bad endings.
