Catch me on smurf-fiction.net or wherever she was. We watched The Hating Game starring Lucy Hale playing a character also named Lucy. Based on the book, The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, this movie follows the plot pretty well with some wild changes. Please tell me who decided to switch her proposal from ebooks to chatrooms, I have questions.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/book-cult--5718878/support.
She's short, he's tall, can i make it anymore obvious? Today we are talking about The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. This book has all your fave romance troupes but isn't super cliche. Besides the unrealistic depection of working in publishing, we liked it and you should listen because you might like it too.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/book-cult--5718878/support.

Summary: Grab a bowl of brains and hunker down for a perfect theme for spooky season - the Undead! Today Holly and Devin sink their teeth into these legendary creatures; deceased but actually alive, depicted as everything from vampires, zombies, mummies and skeletons. Whether you vibe with Brendan Frasier in the iconic 1999 film or are a huge fan of The Walking Dead, these beings have captured our imaginations for centuries for a great reason. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (3:37): Holly discussed Dread Nation by Justina Ireland, an alternate history novel where the Civil War ended not because of political agreements or military victories, but because the dead begin to rise on the battlefield at Gettysburg, forcing both Union and Confederate forces to confront a new, common enemy: the undead. We follow Jane McKeene as she is trained in the art of combat against the undead (called Shamblers) at Miss Preston's School of Combat for Negro Girls in Baltimore. Jane becomes increasingly disillusioned with the system and matters escalate when she and her friend are sent to Summerland, a western settlement that harbors dark secrets. Holly's key takeaways were: Ireland was inspired to write this book after reading “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”; it is unlikely that women who didn't even dress themselves would be zombie fighting machines, and would likely have relied on their ladies' maids instead. Ireland uses this speculative angle to shed light on the very real history of the United States and the implications of racism both then and now. The Shamblers are pretty classic zombies: slow-moving, rotting, and relentless in their pursuit of human flesh. They can turn others into shamblers through bites, similar to traditional zombie lore and hoards of shamblers roam the countryside. Jame is resilient, a master at surviving and must navigate the tricky path of how much one has to compromise their morals in order to survive; she is faced with illusions of safety and the crumbling facade of corruption while holding onto friendships and the trust she shares with her schoolmates. The Heart (15:55): Devin discussed Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match by Sally Thorne, a reimagining of the Mary Shelley classic that follows Victor's younger sister who has been unlucky in love. A great scientific mind but known as being a bit odd, she's run out of suitors but strikes upon a solution as she assists her brother with his groundbreaking reanimation experiments; she'll make her own! A lucky (and gorgeous) corpse lands on her lab table and soon, Will is (re)born. But will the spark of life lead to a spark of love? Devin's key takeaways were: This novel was such a fun re-imagining of the Frankenstein story. It keeps all the same creepiness and gothic energy without the moral quandary of hating your creation and instead falling in love with it. Will is a dashing, galant, and not-too-wonky reanimated corpse that any reader will root for. Angelika as a protagonist is the twist this story needed; Thorne explores the power and powerlessness of women in this era, especially within the scientific community through Angelika and the scrapes her crew gets into. Whenever you're reanimating a dead body, you have to wonder if our lives are controlled by fate or by our own choices - is everything a coincidence or is it all meant to be? Throne uses a familiar tale to explore the implications of choice for characters and when love truly does conquer all, including death. When a spell to summon flour goes very wrong, Mariel finds herself staring down a demon—one she inadvertently summoned for a soul bargain.Ozroth the Ruthless is a legend among demons. Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real talk! We are joined this week by Christine Riccio and Natasha Polis from Those Forking Fangirls to discuss the significant uptick in interest (and sales) of literary romance and YA novels. Today's conversation was inspired by this NPR article:From meet-cutes to happy endings, romance readers feel the love as sales heat up. Christine and Natasha help us dig in on the pipeline from Young Adult to Romance, how the genres somewhat overlap, and how the culture has shifted to make open enjoyment of the Romance genre more socially accepted. Might some of the shifts in cover art portrayals have made the genre more comfortable and accessible to readers? Are there any cases where the cute, cartoony covers fail to communicate the spicy, smutty passages between the covers? Fan Fiction seems to have played a major role in these developments, with more people participating in online fan spaces to create new content. There are even recent examples of very successful fan fic authors going on to become published, like Christina Lauren, EL James, Alice Clayton, and Ali Hazelwood. Is there any direct correlation between the rise in interest for romance novels as a genre and the uptick in romance-based reality TV shows? What sort of escapism do they provide? What recommendations do Christine and Natasha have for current romance readers, or those hoping to get started? "From Blood and Ash" by Jennifer L Aremntrout, "Spoiler Alert" by Olivia Dade, "A Court of Silver Flames" by Sarah J Maas, "Part of Your World" by Abby Jimenez, "Verity" by Colleen Hoover, "Anna & the French Kiss" by Stephanie Perkins, "The Soulmate Equation" by Christina Lauren, "The Hating Game" by Sally Thorne, "A Court of Thorns and Roses" by Sarah J. Maas. And of COURSE - "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer. This week's recommendations are all over the map: Andrew's shameless plug to use his Visible by Verizon referral code to get $20 off your first month, "Sons of the Forest" (Laura), 'Daisy Jones & The Six' on Prime Video (Pam), "Ninth House" (Christine), and "Sanditon" on Masterpiece airing 3/19/23 (Natasha). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon: Last week we revealed all the bad things we did as kids and teens, but this week we're revealing the much more scandalous escapades our parents thought we were into. Weed orgies, illicit drug use on a church playground, underage sex, and all sorts of really interesting things none of us were actually cool enough to be doing.

Summary: Holly and Devin dove into a super fun theme this week - workplace drama. Rarely in the podcast have they discussed a theme that pans out so differently in romances vs. thrillers, and the books they brought highlighted those differences well. Holly was pleasantly surprised by her book, as she is often left feeling like workplace dramas drag. Workplace romances are a common trope in the books Devin reads, and the inherent taboo of coworkers falling in love creates a tension she always enjoys. Topics Discussed: The Heart (1:43): Devin discussed The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. The book follows two executive assistants - Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman - who hate each other loudly, aggressively, and passionately. When a Managing Director role opens up at the recently merged Bexley & Gamin publishing house, their animosity is taken to the next level - and becomes mixed with another kind of passion. Her key takeaways were: The tension and banter in this novel are next-level, with great dialogue and intriguing evolution of Lucy and Joshua's dynamic. The make-out session in the elevator is one of her favorite elevator moments of all time. The story is told from Lucy's POV, which keeps Joshua's feelings and intensions in the dark and maintains the “will they, won't they” dynamic until the climactic end - sometimes to the point where you question Lucy's empathy and perspective on Joshua, however. This book is great for someone looking for a light romantic read. The character's lives don't extend much beyond work, with almost all of the scenes taking place in the office until the 3rd act. The Dagger (19:34): Holly discussed All Her Little Secrets by Wanda M. Morris. The book starts off with a bang, as protagonist Ellice Littlejohn finds her boss dead in his office - the boss with whom she's been having an affair. From there, Ellice is caught up in a world of police investigations, corporate plots and cover-ups, and reckoning with her own past. Holly's key takeaways were: This propulsive corporate thriller has it all - Morris explores racism, white supremacy, childhood trauma, corporate corruption, and more. While Holly sometimes fears workplace thrillers can be dry or dense, Morris executed well in this instance. Set in Atlanta, the tense sense of office atmosphere keeps the reader moving through the story and reflecting on who we are in the office and our personal lives, and if reinventing ourselves is even possible. Holly recommends this book to anyone who enjoys thrillers that weave more complex themes and social commentary throughout - Ellice is not only combating against a murder investigation, but also climbing the corporate ladder as a Black woman. Lin What's Making Our Hearts Race (39:25): Devin: Her new car (named Ruth Zardo) a 2022 Hybrid Honda CR-V Holly: Pachinko on Apple TV Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

A sexy workplace comedy about the thin line between hate and love.
In this episode we recap the movie adaptation of Sally Thorne's bestselling novel The Hating Game, staring Lucy Hale and Austin Stowell. Take two drop-dead gorgeous people and put them in an office. Make sure their desks face each other, oh and make sure they have to compete for a promotion. What could go wrong? We have some very important epiphanies about society's treatment of beautiful people. We also give our nominations for the Nobel peace prize. We discovered a new type of energy conductor. If that sounds much too cultured for Fiction Fixation. You're right. So be sure to listen in to get the full context (and laughs). Hope you enjoy! _____ Follow us on Tiktok @fictionFixation Contact us via our Website at fictionfixation.com Fiction fixation is a commentary podcast perfectly suited for lovers of fiction. It's meant to be light entertainment to anyone who has a love of romantic movies and novels (all sub-genres), improv comedy, reading books, binge watching movies, or just listening to two good friends banter and laugh. We aren't interested in reviewing books or rating movies, we just want to banter about the characters and the situations they find themselves in.
