“If I can but reach that bridge,” thought Ichabod, “I am safe.” This is the story of schoolmaster Ichabod Crane and his ride home after an evening spent trying to woo Katrina Van Tassel at a party hosted by her father at their idyllic farm in rural New York. It's a terrifying ride–perhaps as deadly as Ichabod's pursuer is headless. For this third HTDS Halloween special, we “rewind” to one of the oldest ghost stories in American lore: Washington Irving's “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Starting with a headless Germanic tale, we'll hear some of the literary history behind the stories of headless riders on horseback; get a brief bio on this year's featured author; and then … we'll see if we can reach that covered bridge before it's too late. Charles Lewis Grant (September 12, 1942 – September 15, 2006) was an American novelist and short story writer specializing in what he called "dark fantasy" and "quiet horror". He also wrote under the pseudonyms of Geoffrey Marsh, Lionel Fenn, Simon Lake, Felicia Andrews, Deborah Lewis, Timothy Boggs, Mark Rivers, and Steven Charles. From 1973 to 1977, Grant was Secretary of Science Fiction Writers of America.[2] In 1987-1988, he served as President of the Horror Writers Association. Grant won a World Fantasy Award for his novella collection Nightmare Seasons, a Nebula Award in 1976 for his short story "A Crowd of Shadows", and another Nebula Award in 1978 for his novella A Glow of Candles, a Unicorn's Eye, the latter telling of an actor's dilemma in a post-literate future. Grant also edited the award-winning Shadows anthology, running eleven volumes from 1978-1991. Contributors include Stephen King, Ramsey Campbell, Al Sarrantonio, R.A. Lafferty, Avram Davidson, and Steve Rasnic and Melanie Tem. Grant was a former Executive Secretary and Eastern Regional Director of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and president of the Horror Writers Association. His story "Temperature Days on Hawthorne Street" was adapted into an episode of Tales from the Darkside titled "The Milkman Cometh" in 1987, the same year he wrote the Introduction and Afterward to Tor Books' publication of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Grant's favorite Irving story. Grant wrote twelve books (eight novels and four collections of four related novellas each, with interstitial material) set in the fictional Connecticut town of Oxrun Station. Three of these were intentionally pastiches of classic Universal and Hammer horror films, and feature a vampire, a werewolf, and an animated mummy. All copyright belongs to Kathyrn Ptacek. In honor of the 25th anniversary of DoomBuggies.com on Oct. 31, 2022, DoomBuggies founder Jeff Baham has teamed up with the Sibling Library Podcast to create a brand-new telling of Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." As Haunted Mansion fans know, "Sleepy Hollow" was a tale which Walt Disney made into a classic animated film, and was then considered by Imagineer Ken Anderson as a potential setting for one of the showstopping scenes inside of Disneyland's proposed haunted house attraction, long before plans for the Haunted Mansion were finalized. So grab a blanket and start a crackling fire, pour yourself a cup of warm cider, and enjoy listening to our telling of Irving's classic horror story. Contact the DoomBuggies Podcast at 1-888-5-HATBOX or comments@doombuggies.com.

About 30 miles north of Manhattan lies the town of Sleepy Hollow. Made famous by Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, this nook in the Hudson Valley is home to legends and history alike. A real, lesser known figure in the history of this region is a woman the townsfolk called Hulda of Bohemia. Ostracized by the larger community, the elderly Hulda crafted herbal medicines for the town, leaving them anonymously on people's doorsteps and windowsills. Though her gifts were appreciated in secret, Hula was shunned and labeled as a witch. When the American Revolution came, bringing war to the countryside, Hulda wanted to join the local militia. She was refused. One day in 1777 British Troops began marching towards Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. Not to be turned away this time, Hulda grabbed her musket and joined the fight. Her acts on the battlefield were so impactful, that she's still remembered today. Find out what happened, and discover the woman who is known, for better or worse, as the witch of Sleepy Hollow.
The conclusion of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Happy Halloween and sweet dreams!
