Charles Lewis Grant (September 12, 1942 – September 15, 2006) was an American novelist and short story writer specializing in what he called "dark fantasy" and "quiet horror". He also wrote under the pseudonyms of Geoffrey Marsh, Lionel Fenn, Simon Lake, Felicia Andrews, Deborah Lewis, Timothy Boggs, Mark Rivers, and Steven Charles. From 1973 to 1977, Grant was Secretary of Science Fiction Writers of America.[2] In 1987-1988, he served as President of the Horror Writers Association. Grant won a World Fantasy Award for his novella collection Nightmare Seasons, a Nebula Award in 1976 for his short story "A Crowd of Shadows", and another Nebula Award in 1978 for his novella A Glow of Candles, a Unicorn's Eye, the latter telling of an actor's dilemma in a post-literate future. Grant also edited the award-winning Shadows anthology, running eleven volumes from 1978-1991. Contributors include Stephen King, Ramsey Campbell, Al Sarrantonio, R.A. Lafferty, Avram Davidson, and Steve Rasnic and Melanie Tem. Grant was a former Executive Secretary and Eastern Regional Director of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and president of the Horror Writers Association. His story "Temperature Days on Hawthorne Street" was adapted into an episode of Tales from the Darkside titled "The Milkman Cometh" in 1987, the same year he wrote the Introduction and Afterward to Tor Books' publication of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Grant's favorite Irving story. Grant wrote twelve books (eight novels and four collections of four related novellas each, with interstitial material) set in the fictional Connecticut town of Oxrun Station. Three of these were intentionally pastiches of classic Universal and Hammer horror films, and feature a vampire, a werewolf, and an animated mummy. All copyright belongs to Kathyrn Ptacek. Her parents were actor-manager Sir Gerald du Maurier and his wife, actress Muriel Beaumont. Her grandfather was George du Maurier, a writer and cartoonist. Although du Maurier is classed as a romantic novelist, her stories have been described as "moody and resonant" with overtones of the paranormal. Her bestselling works were not at first taken seriously by critics, but they have since earned an enduring reputation for narrative craft. Many have been successfully adapted into films, including the novels Rebecca, Frenchman's Creek, My Cousin Rachel and Jamaica Inn, and the short stories "The Birds" and "Don't Look Now". Du Maurier spent much of her life in Cornwall, where most of her works are set. As her fame increased, she became more reclusive. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mslade/message

Now he needs our help. Our friend Chauncey Haworth was recently diagnosed with stage III colon cancer that has spread to his lymph nodes. Please help support Chauncey, his wife Terry, and his family through the next few difficult months as he recovers. He will be unable to work full-time for at least six months of chemotherapy and recovery. Chauncey is an independent contractor without paid sick time or employer benefits, and Terry is currently on disability while dealing with chronic migraines. They are in dire need of our help for both living and medical expenses. Chauncey was diagnosed with cancer on June 8 after a four-hour surgery. On July 5 he was rushed to the ER for a second surgery to repair a perforation and abscess caused by the first surgery, and he will have to remain in the hospital for over two weeks. When he returns home, he will face a long road of recovery that includes six months of chemotherapy as well as wound care three times a week, physical therapy, and a third surgery. This diagnosis comes at an already challenging time for the family. Chauncey returned home from his first surgery the day before Terry's father passed away from lung cancer. Terry had been taking her father to chemotherapy treatments at the same cancer center where she will now have to take her husband. Please consider giving what you can to help Chauncey, Terry, and their family through this financially and emotionally stressful time. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mslade/message
