Hi Friends,Today I'm happy to share a talk I had with my neighbor John Rash. He's a filmmaker and photographer originally from North Carolina who makes documentaries and also oversees a project called the Southern Punk Archive. We talk about making things with a D.I.Y approach, growing up in the south, old video stores. punk shows, and a lot more. Hope ya'll enjoy it. And as always, thanks for listening. - AB*Opening music by Ra'id Omar*In-episode music recorded by John Rash*Closing music by Chinese Connection Dub EmbassyLinks:https://www.johnrash.com/https://www.instagram.com/thejohnrash/https://southdocs.org/project/southern-punk-archive/https://southdocs.org/project/negroterror/https://vimeo.com/74429655
We're back! After a too long (but much needed) hiatus, Magnolia Radio is back with a new episode featuring a talk I had last year with my good friend and author William Boyle. Bill (as we call him) is a writer from Brooklyn, New York. He's the author of the novels Gravesend, The Lonely Witness, A Friend Is a Gift You Give Yourself, City of Margins, and Shoot the Moonlight Out, all available from Pegasus Crime. He lives in Oxford, Mississippi. We talk writing, music, the 90's and early 00's music and art scenes, process, and much more. Hope ya'll enjoy it, and as always, thanks for listening.
I first met Cody Rogers (and his brother Jake) through their band Holy Ghost Electric Show. They opened for Water Liars (and me solo) a few times in Oxford, always leaving me with a glimmer of hope for the next generation of Mississippians making independent music. But more importantly, they are some of the nicest and most earnest folks involved in the music scene here.Buy Cody's records here: https://codyrogers.bandcamp.com/Tracklist:I Feel A Darkness from My Heart Is The Most Lonesome Rodeo$5 Cover from My Heart Is The Most Lonesome RodeoPistol Whipped from My Heart Is The Most Lonesome RodeoTishomingo from TishomingoPreachers Kids from TishomingoHighway Patrol from TishomingoGood Friday from My Heart Is The Most Lonesome RodeoMagnolia from Tishomingo*This is episode was produced, recorded, mixed and edited by Andrew Bryant at Sentimental Noises Studios in Oxford, MS.
Tyler took writing classes at the University of Mississippi under the infamous Barry Hannah and has written a stage play titled "The Outlaw Biker" as well as a new novel that's set to come out on November 11, 2022 titled "The Mark of Cain".We talk about his experiences growing up in Florida, moving to Mississippi, studying under Hannah, and how he got started playing music. We also talk a good deal about his book and his songs and I play a lot of music along the way.Strap in because Tyler's old Datsun ain't got any breaks and there's a Stooges tape stuck in the deck.
I recorded this first episode out on the deck of my loft studio, so there are some really nice ambient neighborhood sounds happening. I also played some piano and mixed it in underneath everything, as well as a special live clip of a song by Damien Jurado from his recent performance here at Proud Larry's in Oxford, MS.My hope is that a more consistent form will appear over time, and I expect it will get better as we go. But I think this is a good representation of what to expect from this space in the coming months, along with a lot of other voices and opinions other than my own, as well as songs, sounds and more.Until next time,A.B.Links:- Listen and buy “Over Rainbows and Rainier” by Damien Jurado on Bandcamp- Go see a show at Proud Larry's
You may have heard of Tupelo, a pretty famous guy named Elvis Presley was born there. Luckily for me, he happened to be in Oxford a couple weeks ago for business and Matt was kind enough to take the time to drop by the studio for a quick chat. Then we ran into each other again by accident the next day in the Memphis airport. We talk about how we were first introduced to skateboarding and punk music in Mississippi, about what it takes to grow and maintain a community of likeminded individuals, Piggly Wiggly magazine racks, cigarettes, and lots more. We also talk about the upcoming Change Tupelo Festival which is a two-day community event showcasing and celebrating the vibrant DIY art, music, and skate culture of the streets.Hope you enjoy our talk as much as I did.Until next time,A.B.Links:https://changetupelo.com/https://www.instagram.com/changetupelo/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piggly_Wigglyhttps://www.discogs.com/artist/673807-The-Grumpieshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roadside_MonumentThe Quick & The DeadNever Cry Wolf
My dear friend Matt Arbogast (The Gunshy) has been a brother in song to me for the past 20 years. I first met him at a show in Memphis, TN, and we quickly struck up a friendship that has lasted through everything that's happened since. In this episode we talk about how we met, share some touring and recording stories, as well as some news and music from a new project that we're working on. Hope ya'll enjoy it as much as I did.Buy records by The Gunshy here: https://thegunshy.bandcamp.com/Until next time,AB
Dial Back Sound is a recording studio and record label started by Drive By Truckers bass player Matt Patton. The studio is run by his partner Bronson Tew. The studio/label first showed up on my radar when Matt reached out about having one of his artists, Krista Shows, on my show for her new record. The studio was built in 2009 by Bruce Watson in Water Valley MS, and was originally a part of Fat Possum Records. But over the last few years Matt and Bronson have been running it and recording some amazing artists. Jerry Joseph, Riddy Arman, Water Liars, Drive By Truckers, and Jason Isbell have all worked on projects in the studio. I had a chance to chat with Matt and Bronson about the label and studio. I hope you dig it!
Andrew Bryant rolls into The Marinade. Bryant is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. His music first entered our consciousness through his band Water Liars with Justin Peter Kinkel Schuster. Their most recent record Roll On was released in 2020, the same year that Bryant released his solo record Sentimental Noises. Both records were among our favorites of that most auspicious year. His most recent outstanding record is called A Meaningful Connection.
Will Johnson wafts into The Marinade! Will is a singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and painter from Texas. His band Centro-matic began in the late nineties and went on to influence countless other bands. His work with South San Gabriel bridged the gap between Centro-matic and Johnson's excellent solo records, including his most recent albums Wire Mountain and El Capitan. Will is also in the studio working on the second LP from his project Marie/Lepanto with Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster of Marinade favorite Water Liars. You can find all things Will at will-johnson.com.

Hey! We had 1000 downloads a month! Also, Country Queer Spotlight is live now! Listen to my interview of Jaime Wyatt! Also also, I had to scratch the first artist I planned to play because I couldn’t get a hold of those mp3s after all. Hopefully the edit isn’t too weird! Album of the Week: Bethany Thomas -- BT/SHE/HER This album is a masterpiece. Thomas, who has played with Jon Langford (hence her connection to Bloodshot Records), is also a classical musician, plays jazz...pretty much everything. No matter what the song sounds like, though, Thomas absolutely RIPS on guitar. Her songs are beautiful, too, relating the life of a queer black person in the Midwest with skill and grace. The album is confident and bold and one of the best this year. Zephaniah O’Hora -- “Living Too Long” (Listening to the Music) Jeremy & the Harlequins -- “Let’s Ride” (Single) Bethany Thomas -- “Walls + Ceilings” (BT/SHE/HER) Half Gringa -- “Transitive Property” (Force to Reckon) Our Man in the Field -- “Thin (I Used to Be Bullet Proof)” (Single) Oceanator -- “A Crack in the World” (Things I Never Said) Jeremy Squires -- “Hummingbird” (Many Moons) Water Liars -- “I Want Blood” (Water Liars) Ozymandias Carter -- “Rebels Like Us” (The Vanishing Crowd) Atta Boy -- “Lucky” (Big Heart Manners) The Wonderful Nobodies -- “Walk That Road Alone” (A/B) Have Gun Will Travel -- “Melancholy Moon (Everything Dies)” (Single) Send me music via SubmitHub! Dullards bring a healthy amount of self-written, self-produced glam power pop to Richard's final solo bookend of Season I. George and Roger deliver funny, toe-tapping vibes with their insightful and inspiring Dullards. We play the double A-side single today and discuss the wider merits of this fantastic musical collaboration. What a way to kick off the show as we rapidly approach the end of Season I of From the Bottom of the Record Box. And Dullards are a perfect example of why we champion here at Record Box HQ as we help spread the word to the world. And talking of aspiring artists, we welcome Wesley Bennett to the show as we play a track off of his new 4-track EP - Middle Man. Wesley was kind enough to tell us a few words about himself so read on to find out a little more about this talent young man. Alternatively, you can find him on Bandcamp where you can purchase this essential new EP. Tobin brings back W.H. Lung and their latest single release. Does it show as much promise as their debut LP Incidental Music did last year? The lads certainly think so. And Caamp are back and Björk is back, proving that Tobin has indeed practically run out of steam. Does he listen to anyone else these days? Well, yes, he does, because he's also playing Water Liars in today's show. They prove to be a big hit with Richard. Join us next week as "That Jamie" returns for a 2 show run as we head rapidly toward the close of Season I - great listens coming very soon indeed.

You know the old proverb, "If you follow bikini models on instagram, your eyes and brain will dull into nothingness." In this Field Session we have a live set from singer/songwriter Andrew Bryant of Water Valley, Miss. You can usually find Andrew behind the trap kit in his band Water Liars , but last year he released an album of his own songs in his voice accompanied by his guitar. This Is The Life is a meditation on fatherhood, being a husband, a son of aging parents and staying true to yourself creatively in the midst of all those obligations. Enjoy a short version of the set in the video or listen to the entire set in the audio link. Recorded at the Bragg Jam Music Festival in Macon. https://youtu.be/dQv5ofQFJuY
Guys, I have a problem.Biscuits. Seriously! It's a problem! I have always loved biscuits. Buttery ones, flakey ones, dense ones, big ones, ones with rosemary in them….seriously. Biscuits. They are nature's fruit of the south. If they are nature's fruit then Andrew Bryant is the meat of the south. Soulful, thoughtful, and full of fullness. I'm honestly so sorry about the whole biscuit comparison but honestly as Matt points out in the Season 01 Preview every time I hear Andrew's last name all I can think about is “can I get to Bryant's biscuits fast enough?” But I digress, Andrew was such an awesome guest and I was so happy that he was cool to talk to me without my co-host there. I urge you to please go check out Andrew's solo record “This is The Life” on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify….Also, please go check out his other project Water Liars. (If you check out the song “Linens” you'll understand the biscuit shit). You can go purchase Andrew's record on vinyl or cd at Sleeprecordings.comGo follow him on twitter and instagram @MagnoliaStateThanks and eat a biscuit.
