Mostanában másról sem szólnak a hírek, minthogy Budapest a nemzetközi filmipar egyik kiemelkedő forgatási helyszínévé vált. A Sláger FM-en minden este 22 órakor a kultúráé a főszerep S. In a bumper episode, the penultimate one of the year, Dario interviews Jessica Hausner about her new film Club Zero and Guy Maddin, Evan, and Galen Johnson about Rumours. Both films have limited UK releases this week (Friday, December 6th), and, interestingly, though they are very different films, they have thematic connections, particularly in relation to contemporary crises, social critique, and satirical modes. Club Zero stars a very well-cast Mia Wasikowska as Ms. Novak, a girlish teacher whose radical ideas about diet lead a group of students down a dangerous path. Dario's conversation with Jessica and composer Marcus Binder explores influence, seduction, and the complexities of societal expectations through the lens of her film. They discuss the dangers of eating disorders, the pressures of social responsibility placed on children, the alienating dynamics of the school environment, and how misinformation can so easily be spread. Rumours boasts a stacked cast led by Cate Blanchett, who represents the leaders of the G7. Dario talked to director-writer team Guy Maddin, Galen Johnson, and Evan Johnson about the film at the London Film Festival. The conversation navigates the complexities of creative expression in film, touching on themes of self-perception, audience expectations, character development, and the balance between artistic freedom and commercial viability. They discuss the challenges of navigating genre conventions, the significance of casting choices, and the implications of stereotypes in representing national identities. Neil and Dario then reflect on both the interviews and films, examining their artistic choices, character development, and how well the themes capture contemporary anxieties around authority, ideology, and ambivalence. They also discuss the aesthetics of symbolism and the emotional distance created through cinematography, as well as the broader implications of anxiety and manipulation in youth culture. This leads to a reflection on how artists address the current socio-political moment, how crisis is influencing many film works in an implicit way, and whether a political cinema is possible while maintaining a unique voice in an uncertain, changing cultural landscape. James Cameron-Wilson says that box office is up a mere 3% with new #1 Venom: The Last Dance, the third in the franchise with Tom Hardy. Full of British actors, it is dark and violent. The antithesis is #2 The Wild Robot, a delightful animated feature about a robot learning from the animals on an uninhabited island. It's a genuine original and looks terrific. James was moved and entertained. On Sky/Netflix is Woman of the Hour, starring and directed by Anna Kendrick. Although based on a true story about a serial killer on a TV dating show, James found it only mildly diverting. He did recommend, though, that people search out the 2011 version of Jane Eyre online, starring Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska. Learn more about your ad choices. Flyways is a visually stunning and emotionally enriching film about three different groups of endangered migratory shorebirds from around the globe. Each of these birds fly thousands of kilometers around the globe through migratory routes, traversing hemispheres and continents to reach breeding grounds. Often they will fly days without food or water. Directed and shot by Randall Wood, Flyways is a passionate film that presents parts of the avian species that are threatened by humanity alongside the many bird watchers and scientists who eagerly follow their journeys. These scientists use tracking devices and location data, and occasionally, if luck is their side, visual verification from humans, to monitor where the birds move. Flyways plays out like a blend between Travelling Birds and Jennifer Peedom's River and Mountain, acting as a plea for mankind to respect nature and to consider just how we impact the living world around us. With a soaring score by Cezary Skubieszewski, and gentle narration by Mia Wasikowska, Flyways is a soul-enriching film that deserves to be seen on the big screen. In this interview, Randall talks about the importance of capturing these images, how documentaries can be advocacy films, as well as the Q&A sessions that he's embarking upon throughout May and June across Australia. Actors Mia Wasikowska and Eric Bana have a new movie called "Blueback" which is currently in theaters. Also, documentary filmmaker R. J. Cutler ("Belushi", "The War Room") stops by to discuss his new docu-series "Murf the Surf" which is currently streaming on MGM+.
Mia Wasikowska's first project in The States was the HBO series “In Treatment.” She was just 16 years old, but if you watched it then, you were probably in awe, like me, marveling at this seemingly fully formed acting artist, performing, with nuance and subtlety, well beyond her years. She continued to wow us with stellar work in “Jane Eyre,” “Madame Bovary,” “Alice In Wonderland,” “Stoker,” “The Double,” “Tracks,” “Damsel,” “Bergman Island,” to name a few. Her latest is an absolutely beautiful film called “Blueback.” In this woefully brief episode, she talks about the underwater acting she had to do in that film, why she doesn't feel the need to prepare much anymore before ‘day one,' “simple confidence” as a tool, why she turns down a lot of projects, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

In rewatching the 2011 adaptation of Jane Eyre, Piper and Lillian reminisced on why we love this movie, but we also discussed an interesting theory: when you remove concerning yet crucial narrative elements of Jane Eyre to appeal to a wider audience, what do you loose in return?
Answering the big question...should I see this movie? Blueback (Drama, Family) With a strong environmental message, Blueback is a feel-good story about protecting and saving the reef. Told in flashback, Abby Jackson, Mia Wasikowska, is a marine biologist, a professor working offshore researching coral bleaching. Mark and Jonny Numb (@JonnyNumb on Twitter) discuss the 2020 drama The Devil All the Time. Directed by Antonio Campos, and starring Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Riley Keough, Bill Skarsgård, Sebastian Stan, Mia Wasikowska, Jason Clarke, Eliza Scanlen (seriously, this cast is stacked), and some delicious chicken livers, the movie focuses on multiple intertwined storylines that involves horrible people doing horrible things. In this episode, they also talk about Robert Pattinson's accent, spider bites, and southern gothic cinema. Enjoy!
“Trouble Every Day” (2001), co-written by Claire Denis and Jean-Pol Fargeau and directed by Denis, follows the intersecting stories of two couples: Léo (Alex Descas) and Coré (Beatrice Dalle) Semeneau and Shane (Vincent Gallo) and June (Tricia Vessey) Brown. Shane and Léo previously met on a research expedition to the South American jungle in search of a plant that would lead to a breakthrough in neurobiology. Léo led the expedition and Shane was there on behalf of a US pharmaceutical company. When the film begins, the Browns are on their honeymoon in Paris, but we eventually learn that it's all just an excuse so that Shane can find Léo. It turns out that at some point, Shane was infected with the disease that Léo is working to solve through his research and that his own wife, Coré also suffers from. The disease creates an unquenchable hunger in its host, compelling them to fuck, murder, and consume people. Eventually, Shane finds the Semeneau house, but Léo isn't there … it's just Coré, alone, covered in blood, and wandering around in a daze. While I was able to summarize it, this isn't the type of film that has a clear plot with spelled out motivations. Many questions are left unanswered and certain story threads never quite come together. The film is less about a linear narrative and more about feelings, overarching themes, and fleeting impressions. Here are some things we mentioned during the episode and/or that we think you should check out: Kate's website Kate's piece in The Atlantic, "Why Female Cannibals Frighten and Fascinate" Kate's book on "Trouble Every Day" for the Devil's Advocates series (see if your local bookstore can order it) My interview with Kate on WiR — I love the section where she talks about how horror was originally marketed toward women Other films we recommend watching if "Trouble Every Day" piqued your interest: "In My Skin" (Marina de Van, 2002) -- Lindsay's favorite NFE "The Addiction" (Abel Ferrara, 1995) -- Young Edie Falco! "Dressed to Kill" (Brian De Palma, 1980) "Shivers" (David Cronenberg, 1975) "Un Chien Andalou" (Luis Buñuel, 1929) "Cat People" (Jacques Tourneur, 1942) "Poison" (Todd Haynes, 1991) "Raw" and "Titane" (Julia Ducournau, 2016 and 2021) "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night" (Ana Lily Amirpour, 2014) "Caché" (Michael Haneke, 2005) "Fat Girl" (Catherine Breillat, 2001) "The Hunger" (Tony Scott, 1983) "After Midnight" (Jeremy Gardner and Christian Stella, 2019) "Spring" (Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, 2014) "Crimson Peak" (Guillermo del Toro, 2015) -- Mia Wasikowska!

Happy Monday, Goons! For our last week of Back to School here on Slashers Podcast, join Doug, Jason and Ade as they discuss Prom Night 2: Hello, Mary Lou. This one is a guilty favorite; it's charming, it's gory, it's chock full of nudity and all things lewd and lascivious. Mary Lou is one of our more progressive femme fatale slashers and she deserves all the accolades from this performance. While part 2 doesn't necessarily fall into the same realm as part one-- especially since it has a supernatural entity and possession-- we can tell that it clearly borrows from our favorite horror classics, such as A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Carrie, The Exorcist, and more. In addition, find out why we feel The Faculty borrows elements from this underrated 80s favorite. Not to mention, Michael Ironside is a treasure in this one, too. PS, do you think Slashers Podcast should do an episode on all of the gory, gruesome Halloween themed Rosanne episodes? Let us know in the poll or in the coments! Lastly, Ade would like to apologize for the small flub in mixing up Mia Goth and Mia Wasikowska. They are both amazing actresses, but clearly, Goth is the star of Ti West's Pearl, X, and the upcoming Maxxxine.
