The Marinade is a free-flowing conversation about the creative process with creative people.
The Marinade with Jason Earle is an exceptional podcast that stands out in the realm of interview shows. Hosted by the talented Jason Earle, this podcast goes beyond mere surface-level conversations and delves into the depths of each guest's craft and creative journey. It feels like sitting down with a close friend and catching up on life while also learning about their artistic process. One of the standout aspects of The Marinade is how Earle always asks his guests about their current readings or other creative mediums they are exploring. This adds an extra layer of insight into the artist's mind and provides listeners with new recommendations for their own reading, listening, and podcast lists.
The best aspect of The Marinade is undoubtedly Jason Earle's interviewing skills. He has a natural ability to ask thought-provoking questions that prompt his guests to open up and share intriguing stories, thoughts, and experiences. Whether you are a music lover or a songwriter yourself, this podcast offers valuable insights into the creative process and allows you to discover new perspectives on music and artistry. Additionally, the "what are you getting down on" segment, where Earle discusses other music, books, and creative works he is currently enjoying, adds an extra layer of relatability to the show.
While The Marinade is undeniably a fantastic podcast overall, one potential downside may be its focus solely on interviews. If you are looking for a variety of content formats or different types of episodes, this might not be the ideal choice for you. However, if you appreciate long-form conversations packed with insightful content from talented artists across various genres, then The Marinade will certainly satisfy your cravings.
In conclusion, The Marinade with Jason Earle is an outstanding podcast that brings together music lovers and songwriters alike in a deep exploration of craft and creativity. With Jason Earle at the helm as a skilled interviewer who goes beyond surface-level discussions, each episode is a fascinating journey into the minds of talented artists. Whether you are on a road trip or simply looking to expand your horizons, take Jason Earle and The Marinade with you for an enriching and enjoyable experience that will leave you craving more.
Kelsey Waldon has established herself as an artist firmly in tune with herself as a writer yet not content with resting on her sterling reputation. With each record her pen has further flowered, culminating in this instance with an invigorating album that pays homage to country music's past while forging toward a confessional, self-reflective, vulnerable brand of tunes that stands out even among many of her esteemed peers. Given that she was introduced to a broader audience when she signed with the late, legendary John Prine's Oh Boy Records in 2019, one would be forgiven for thinking Kelsey is relatively new to the music scene. On the contrary, she has paid her dues and the years of honing her craft jump out on Every Ghost. Caitlin Cannon is a powerhouse singer, songwriter, actor, and comedian. Her new record Love Addict is chock full of bangers that grabbed me on the first listen. It's got country in it with some psychedelica. The album is a sonic and lyrical journey that pushes the envelope. On some episodes, you really connect with the guest. Little Feat's legend goes back to 1969! The band has produced ubiquitous hits like "Dixie Chicken" and "Willin'." Their influence stretches across generations. They have endured heartbreak, loss, and lineup changes but the core Little Feat sound has remained true since the beginning. Scott Sharrard joined LIttle Feat in 2019 and has been instrumental in their efforts leading up to the band's latest record Strike Up The Band, which was released on May 9th, 2025. In addition to his work with Little Feat, Scott was the band leader for the Gregg Allman Band and his band The Chesterfields. The band, and Scott, have lived a fascinating musical life. The song you are hearing in this episode is "Midnight Flight" from Little Feat's excellent new record. Listen on: Spotify- Apple Podcasts- YouTube-
Matt Andersen is a singer and songwriter from New Brunswick, Canada whose career has spanned over twenty years and somehow, despite his work being very much in my wheelhouse, I am just now learning about it all. This man's voice, his playing, his writing- it all shines on each of his records and especially so on his new record The Hammer & The Rose. The Hammer & The Rose was released on April 25, 2025 and it is squarely on my 2025 superlatives list. Before I get to my conversation with Matt, I want to thank three new Patreon patrons! Steve Poltz is a singer and songwriter originally from Nova Scotia, raised in Southern California, and now making his home in Nashville. He made a name for himself first with his band The Rugburns and later, more famously, as co-writer with Jewel including the mega hit “You Were Meant For Me.” If you are of a certain age, you will remember the video for that song. A spare room with Jewel playing guitar and a dude dressed like 1996. That dude is Steve Poltz himself! Fifteen-year-old me would be losing his mind. Hell, 44-year-old me is losing his mind at this opportunity. Steve's latest record Stardust & Satellites is outstanding! Everyone, it is my great honor to bring you my conversation with Steve Poltz! Grey DeLisle is an acclaimed actor and Grammy-winning musician whose latest record is an immediate contender for my favorite of the year. Where does one begin to introduce a powerhouse like Grey DeLisle? For decades she was the voice of Daphne in the Scooby Doo series. She plays Azula in Avatar The Last Airbender. Her music has been compared to Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn. Just an all around badass and very cool person. John Moreland and BJ Barham among others have been singing his praises as well. Just give the record a spin after you listen to this conversation
Nick Gusman is the front man and principal songwriter for Nick Gusman and The Coyotes whose latest record Lifting Heavy Things is one of my favorites from 2024. Jason Earle of The Marinade tells stories about his favorite live shows of the year 2024. Hear tales about seeing American Aquarium, Jason Isbell, and Bob Dylan.
Kasey Anderson is a singer and songwriter from Portland, OR, whose latest record To The Places We Lived is one of my favorites of the year and maybe my favorite thing he has done. Kasey and I always get lost in the good weeds when we chat and this conversation is a good example. Y'all, it is my pleasure to bring you for the third time, my conversation with Kasey Anderson.
BJ Barham is the creative force behind one of my all time favorite bands American Aquarium. BJ was on my short list of dream guests when I started this thing back in 2016 and I was thrilled that he agreed to be my very first Marinade guest! American Aquarium released perhaps my favorite of their albums The Fear of Standing Still earlier this year. Daryl Hance is a songwriter and guitar player from Duval County, Florida, whose music has been in my life for over twenty years. I first learned of Daryl during his time with the band Mofro, now J.J. Grey and Mofro. He hasn't been with that band for a while and since gone on to carve a handful of wonderful solo records. I've long said his guitar playing is like a fingerprint. Maybe it's the Florida boy in me. Maybe it's the country boy in me. That swampy sound so few can capture with authenticity is hyper-present in Daryl's work and I am ready for more and more. Daryl's latest record is called “Devil's Millhopper,” it is available wherever you consume music, and you can buy a digital copy on bandcamp.com. After writing 1000 songs and recording several albums in solitude, Chris Robeson has finally released his debut album Euphoriphobia and it is outstanding. Y'all, I understandably get pigeonholed as an Americana fan. But I love stoner rock and jazz and so many genres. Every so often a record like this comes along and blows my mind. Boulevards is the nom de plume of Jamil Rashad whose latest record Carolina Funk: Barn Burner on Tobacco Road is among my favorites of the year. As Jamil puts it, “He did not want to be a carbon copy and make the same record as my favorite influences growing up. The objective was to make a record that was creative, raw, infectious, syncopated basslines, tight drums, punchy horns that brings a soulful element to the funk.” Objective accomplished. This is as fresh and interesting a record as I have heard in a long time. Listen on: Apple Podcasts- Spotify- YouTube-

Y'all, I have been a fan of Oliver's music since damn near the inception of The Wood Brothers and I am thrilled to bring y'all this conversation. This is the third time I have had the pleasure of chatting with Oliver on record. He is always thoughtful and I always learn something. Kyle Keller is a singer and songwriter who currently makes his home in Gainesville, FL (Go Gators!) Kyle's sophomore record The Great American Highway was released in the summer of 2023 and it's a delight that gives and gives. So is the man himself as you will hear in this episode. I have known Kyle for several years. He and my dear friend Jordan Foley are very close and the three of us sat having tea and talking about life here in my beloved Milk District in Orlando then walked over to the porch of Barley and Vine Biergarten to record. It was a gorgeous April day that was a long time coming. Colby T. Helms is a singer, songwriter, and guitar player from Southwest Virginia. His debut full length record Tales of Misfortune is a sterling example of an artist coming out of the gates hot. Sam Emerson Bodary is the lead singer and principal songwriter of Columbus, Ohio's Hello Emerson. Hello Emerson's latest record unpacks a serious car accident suffered by Bodary's father. It is an examination of family and mortality in a way that makes both and their attendant themes seem more manageable than they might in practice. To Keep Him Here is a stunning record and I am so grateful for the opportunity to sit down with Sam.
This is episode 160 and our guest for the second time is Sammy Kay. Sammy is a songwriter from New Jersey who now makes his home in Cincinnati, Kentucky. He is a dear sweet soul who has lived a fascinating life. We have gotten to know each other over the last year and some change and I am grateful for the connection we have formed. Sammy is always working and you will hear about those projects during our chat. Most notably the debut EP from his band The Kilograms with J Duckworth, Joe Gittleman, and Michael McDermott is now available wherever you consume music. This is essentially me and Sammy shooting the shit and I hope y'all enjoy it as much as we did.

Joe Pug is our guest for the second time. Joe is a revered singer, songwriter, and podcaster from Greenbelt, Maryland. He has been releasing music since 2009's classic record Nation of Heat, which was about the time his work came into my life when he opened for the legendary Steve Earle. His latest record Sketch of a Promised Departure will be released on March 3, 2024. The first time we talked was a remote conversation back in 2021. This time we got to sit down with Joe backstage ahead of his show at Tuffy's Music Box in Sanford, FL. The wonderful songwriter and friend of the show Michael McArthur opened with Josh Davis on guitar. The atmosphere was welcoming and beautiful and I am so grateful to bring you this episode. Everyone, it is my great honor to bring you the return of Joe Pug. Follow all things Joe Pug at: https://joepugmusic.com/ Support The Marinade on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/marinadepodcast
Jaimee Harris is a singer and songwriter from Waco, Texas, who is one of my new favorite artists. Her debut full length record Red Rescue was released in 2018 to well deserved high praise. For whatever reason, that album snuck by my ears, but her follow up Boomerang Town, which came out last year got its hooks in me on the first listen. As fate would have it, Jaimee was on tour with the legendary Mary Gauthier at that very moment and the tour was stopping just down the road. Thankfully, Jaimee agree to sit down with us at Gram Parson's Derry Down in Winter Haven, FL, earlier this month for a delightful conversation about writing, teaching, her incredible new record Boomerang Town, and of course, pinball. The Marinade is a free-flowing conversation about the creative process with creative people. Each episode we welcome musicians, actors, comedians, authors, visual artists, filmmakers- anyone who creates art to talk about how and why we make stuff. Dave Wilson is the principal songwriter for the North Carolina's Chatham County Line, whose outstanding tenth studio album Hiyo will be released on January 26, 2024. The album was produced by Rachael Moore and it sees the band taking a huge sonic leap that lands with grace. As you will hear, I've been a fan of Chatham County Line for many years and this was a huge honor. Everyone, it is my great honor to bring you my conversation with Dave Wilson.
