Send us a textIn Part 2 of our series on John B. McLendon, we move from the "Secret Game" of the 1940s to the public dominance of the 1950s. In 1954, McLendon arrived at the NAIA tournament in Kansas City with a non-negotiable demand: his team would eat in the same restaurants and sleep in the same hotels as the white teams. This episode covers the rise of Tennessee A&I (now Tennessee State), the first college basketball team in history to win three consecutive national championships (1957-1959).In this episode:The Ultimatum: How McLendon used the NAIA tournament to force the integration of Kansas City hotels and restaurants in 1954.The Dynasty: The story of the first college "Three-Peat," led by the legendary Dick Barnett and his "Fallback Baby" jump shot. The Cost of Integration: How the success of HBCUs led to Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) recruiting Black talent, draining the very programs that built it.Breaking Barriers: McLendon becoming the first African American head coach of a pro team (Cleveland Pipers) and a PWI (Cleveland State). From the NAIA tournament to the birth of the fast break as a global standard, this is how the "side door" became the front door.Support the showDid you know we are one of the Top 30 Collage Podcasts in the World! https://podcast.feedspot.com/college_basketball_podcasts/?feedid=5529823&_src=f1_featured_email Support the Pod or Binge the Entire Season Now! https://www.buzzsprout.com/1269236/support https://youtube.com/@IconicSeasons Connect on Social https://www.instagram.com/ncaaiconicseasons/

Did you ever wonder why a legal copyright disclaimer is always played during baseball games? It's probably because of Gordon Barton McLendon, a radio broadcaster known as the Old Scotchman. After serving in the military during World War Two, McLendon created the Liberty Broadcasting System, a nationwide radio network that broadcast Major League Baseball games from 1948 to 1953. Those broadcasts never originated from ballparks, they were re-created inside McLendon's studio. Wes Wise, the former mayor of Dallas Texas, worked for McLendon as a sports reporter, and says those re-creations were so vivid, audiences thought McLendon was actually at the scene, and the broadcasts were wildly popular. However, baseball bigwigs later caught on, shut down McLendon's broadcasts, and banned any more re-creations. Mclendon went on to become a multi-millionaire, perfecting the popular Top 40 music radio format in the 1950s and 1960s. He developed pirate radio broadcasting to Europe, and became involved in television, and movies. In 1964–65 he served as a communications adviser to the United States Peace Corps. In 1971 McLendon conducted a month-long all-expense-paid broadcasting course for nine minority-group members, including African Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Mexican-Americans. We will hear Gordon McLendon recreate the New York Giants comeback win over the Brooklyn Dodgers, in the 1951 National League Championship. Then, the Old Scotchman tells his life's story to Dr. Cliff Ganus, president of Harding College in 1969. More at KRobCollection.com

Business of Design ™ | Interior Designers, Decorators, Stagers, Stylists, Architects & Landscapers
As a left-brained creative, having a process and set of procedures is instrumental for success, says Robin McLendon. Robin is not an interior design professional. Instead, she's a client and she has lots to say about working with professionals who do not have a system like the BOD™ 15, which allows them to run projects in an orderly fashion. In this episode we learn: - don't ask the client what she needs or is looking for, instead tell her what you think she needs based on her project goals - tell clients how they can help make the job and the project more successful - tell the client where the boundaries are (like how Kimberley reserves text messages for friends and family only) - don't make the client micromanage the designer - if you give your word on something, then keep it Success is not an accident. It's a strategy. Business of Design® is that strategy. Become a member, today. https://businessofdesign.com/?ref=2&campaign=podcast

Jerome Hanna "Dizzy" Dean was born on January 16th, 1910 in Lucas, Arkansas, only attending school into the second grade. He made his professional debut in 1930 for the St. Louis Cardinals, sticking with the big club in 1932. The team was soon nicknamed the Gashouse Gang for their on and off field exploits. Two years later Dean was the 1934 World Series team's ace. His brother Paul was also on the pitching staff. For the next three years Dean won seventy-eight and lost just thirty-two. Paul won forty-three games of his own. The Cardinals biggest rivals in the 1930s were the New York Giants. Even with Dean's brilliance, his Cardinals won only one world series before arm troubles derailed his career. He then went into broadcasting, calling Baseball for radio, and then TV, from 1941 through 1965. He had his own radio show for NBC in the summer of 1948. During that summer's all-star break, the Brooklyn Dodgers fired their longtime manager Leo Durocher. Durocher signed with the Giants, who moved their manager Mel Ott to a front office position. All three New York teams missed the playoffs that year. That same summer Gordon McLendon founded a U.S. radio network called the Liberty Broadcasting System. McLendon built the network up to nearly five-hundred affiliates, second in size only to the Mutual Broadcasting System. His success led to restrictions on Major League Baseball broadcasts in minor league franchise areas and blackouts within a seventy-five mile range of major league cities. It was a disaster for the network, which folded on May 16th, 1952.

Jay sits down with the man who created a viral video that has become an internet staple over the last eight years, Dana McLendon - who created the "Universal Hot-Crazy Matrix". Dana tells Jay the story about how the idea for the video came together, and it went super viral before his wife even knew about it - and shares the hilarious reveal of the first time they watched it together. Dana also talks about how wild some of the hate has been that he's received and why he feels like people just receive the bit wrong. Dana then demonstrates the matrix for the people in Jay's studio who have not seen it and everyone has a good-hearted laugh!! And he built one for women as well!
