Paul Rappaport is an accomplished guitarist who first heard guitar when he was a kid in California, watching a live local TV show featuring country guitar players…a show that was broadcast from a huge L.A. car lot. He learned to play, fell in love with the instrument and by high school was playing in bands. While attending college at UCLA, Paul got a job offer. A very appealing offer from Columbia Records. The position sounded good, but what really sweetened the deal was when he learned he could have all the records he wanted…for free. During his 33 years at Columbia, Paul Rappaport proved to be gifted at promotion and marketing and at forming close relationships with artist and bands, who knew him as Rapp. He gave Elvis Costello the red Rickenbacker used on Armed Forces. Pink Floyd asked Rapp to join them onstage at the London Arena. And he created some of the most memorable and visually stunning event promotions in rock history. All of this is told in Rapp's fascinating new book – Gliders Over Hollywood: Airships, Airplay, and The Art Of Rock Promotion. You can order Gliders Over Hollywood: Airships, Airplay and The Art of Rock Promotion from Barnes & Noble here. You can also order the book from Amazon here.Save on Certified Pre-Owned ElectronicsPlug has great prices on refurbished electronics. Paul Rappaport in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gliders-Over-Hollywood-Airships-Promotion/dp/191682918X Gliders Over Hollywood tells the exhilarating true story of a blue-collar kid nicknamed ‘Rap' who grew up in thrall to rock'n'roll, then found himself right in the middle of many of his heroes' lives as he became the most renowned rock promotion man in the USA. Paul Rappaport enjoyed a storied thirty-three-year career at Columbia Records, where he was instrumental in the careers of everyone from Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd to The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello to Billy Joel, Judas Priest to Alice In Chains, and many, many more. The music business from the late 60s through the 90s was an exciting time that mirrored the music and the musicians making it. It was also a time of new and creative ideas on how to market this groundbreaking cultural phenomenon. Eccentric characters were everywhere, and often the managers, promoters, disc jockeys, and record company staff were just as big a show as the performers themselves. This dynamic, entertaining memoir captures the magic of these times and the people who made it happen, revealing the never-before-heard secrets of the promotion and marketing that turned the music industry on its head. From creating the Pink Floyd airship to sword-fighting with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden and receiving a guitar lesson from Keith Richards, it's a book packed full of extraordinary adventures with some of the biggest names in rock.

It was great to interview Toby Page, Managing Director of Skyship Services Inc, operator of the largest lighter-than-air fleet in the world. Toby and I met 25 years ago when I boarded one of his airships as a wide-eyed teenager and it's testament to the power of these wonderful aircraft that we are both still airship-obsessed. Toby talks about some of the key moments that have shaped the industry over the last quarter century, from 9/11 to the covid pandemic. We explore how an effective blimp advertising campaign comes together and what it's like out on the road with a travelling airship circus. We also talk about the future of the industry and Skyship Services' role in training the pilots of the future. Find out more about Skyship Services at www.airships.com. This is the last episode of Season One. Thanks for listening and I'll see you soon for Season Two! As ever, please remember to like, share and review...
This week the fellas get together to talk about an artcile Commando shared about Aeros and their grand plans to start to use airships as floating distribution centers with drones making the final step delivery. They debate if this makes sense and if it's feasible to run in various markets. This leads to Sarcastro pointing out they the only jobs the job openings they have on their website are for interns to basically prove that this model would work which then ends up having Fatty point out that he's not buying into it as they don't even have an actual airship to do this with that they've proven this would work. Banky and Fatty share their experience (or rather Banky's inexperience) at an indoor shooting range over the weekend. Commando points out that the current ongoing poor choice is the hobby of getting into going to shooting ranges is how much money it's collectively costing. Intro and Outro music written and performed by Andrés Rodríguez (Androzguitar).
As political tensions escalated across Europe in the years leading up to the First World War, the major powers engaged in an aerial arms race to develop their airships into war-winning weapons. Britain, Italy, France and Germany watched each other's progress with fear and alarm. Britain struggled to keep up with its continental rivals. Italy was the only country to deploy airships in combat pre-WW1. France built a large fleet but didn't know what to do with it. Germany, of course, dominated the skies but experienced several devastating crashes that claimed the lives of many of their valuable experienced airshipmen. By the time war erupted in the summer of 1914, airshipmen around the world faced an uncertain future. What role would these lighter-than-air giants play in the conflicts to come? Join us as we explore the story of how airships prepared for war - an era marked by ambition, innovation and no small measure of calamity. The Twentieth Century was a time of rapid change. Americans were beginning to take to the roads in their automobiles, and daring young men and women were taking to the skies in their flying machines. Advances like the phonograph came fast and furious, and talking motion pictures and the radio were just around the corner. But some people had a difficult time adjusting to the fast pace of societal changes.

In 1909, the Zeppelin Company made history by founding the world's first airline, DELAG. But it was not smooth sailing; DELAG lost their first airships in a series of high-profile, humiliating disasters before they found their feet. Expanding amid a wave of German nationalism, in which the Zeppelin became a patriotic symbol of Teutonic technological might, DELAG airships soon flew over all the major cities of Germany. Years ahead of aeroplanes, airline passengers on DELAG's ships flew in plush cabins and served the finest food and wine by the world's first flight attendant. The road to success was not a smooth one for Count von Zeppelin. This episode tells the story of his repeated attempts to put the Zeppelin enterprise on a firm foundation, to safeguard the future for his rigid airship invention. Even now he would have agonising false starts, with his second airship torn to pieces in a storm. With the stunning success of his third airship, the LZ-3, and her larger successor, the LZ-4, the stage seemed set for the Count to meet the German government's audacious challenge - to complete a 24-hour endurance flight with the LZ-4, something no aircraft had yet achieved. But triumph was to turn to tragedy; LZ-4 would be destroyed in a devastating, fiery accident. It all seemed to be over for the Count, but a nationwide upswell of popular support turned crushing defeat into overwhelming victory. This is the story of how the Zeppelin rose from the ashes.

His Majesty's Airship: The Life and Tragic Death of the World's Largest Flying Machine by S. C. GwynneFrom the bestselling author of the Pulitzer Prize finalist Empire of the Summer Moon comes a stunning historical tale of the rise and fall of the world's largest airship—and the doomed love story between an ambitious British officer and a married Romanian Princess at its heart. The tragic story of the British airship R101—which went down in a spectacular hydrogen-fueled fireball in 1930, killing more people than died in the Hindenburg disaster seven years later—has been largely forgotten. In His Majesty's Airship, historian S.C. Gwynne resurrects it in vivid detail, telling the epic story of great ambition gone terribly wrong.Airships, those airborne leviathans that occupied center stage in the world in the first half of the twentieth century, were a symbol of the future. R101 was not just the largest aircraft ever to have flown and the product of the world's most advanced engineering—she was also the lynchpin of an imperial British scheme to link by air the far-flung areas of its empire from Australia to India, South Africa, Canada, Egypt, and Singapore. No one had ever conceived of anything like this. R101 captivated the world. There was just one problem: beyond the hype and technological wonders, these big, steel-framed, hydrogen-filled airships were a dangerously bad idea.Gwynne's chronicle features a cast of remarkable—and often tragically flawed—characters, including Lord Christopher Thomson, the man who dreamed up the Imperial Airship Scheme and then relentlessly pushed R101 to her destruction; Princess Marthe Bibesco, the celebrated writer and glamorous socialite with whom he had a long affair; and Herbert Scott, a national hero who had made the first double crossing of the Atlantic in any aircraft in 1919—eight years before Lindbergh's famous flight—but who devolved into drink and ruin. These historical figures—and the ship they built, flew, and crashed—come together in a grand tale that details the rocky road to commercial aviation written by one of the best popular historians writing today.About the AuthorS.C. Gwynne is the author of Hymns of the Republic and the New York Times bestsellers Rebel Yell and Empire of the Summer Moon, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. He spent most of his career as a journalist, including stints with Time as bureau chief, national correspondent, and senior editor, and with Texas Monthly as executive editor. Enjoy this episode? Please share it with at least ONE friend who you think needs to hear it! What if modern science isn't telling us the whole truth? In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Steve Young, an author, musician, and natural philosopher, to explore the world of alchemy and challenge the rigid structures of contemporary science. Dr. Young, known by the music alias Hedflux, takes us on a journey through his experiences and the profound shifts in his understanding of reality. We dive into the reasons behind his decision to write his book, the natural science that is accessible to everyone, and the role shamanic experiences played in reshaping his worldview. Episode Highlights: Path to Alchemy: Dr. Young shares the events that led him from a conventional academic background in theoretical physics to the mystical world of alchemy, influenced by shamanic experiences that made him question everything he was taught. Natural Science vs. Modern Science: A comparison of classical physics, which is rooted in observation and discovery, with modern science, which often relies on authority to dictate truth. Dr. Young delves into how these differences influenced his shift in perspective. Heliocentrism and Gravity: Dr. Young discusses what led him to question the heliocentric model and the concept of gravity, including his thoughts on various scientific experiments like the Michelson-Morley experiment and their perceived flaws. The Alchemical Elements: Explore the four classical elements—air, water, earth, and fire—and how ether connects with them. Dr. Young also breaks down the symbology of the tetractys and the deeper meaning behind the caduceus. Alchemy and the Periodic Table: Dr. Young explains how the elements on the periodic table are formed through the transmutation of the four classical elements and shares insights into the inner processes of alchemy and the vessels used in this transformative work. Evolution and Creation: A thought-provoking discussion on how the theory of evolution may detract from the universe's creation power, opening the door to alternative perspectives on existence. About Dr. Steve Young: Steven Young, based in Scotland, is an author, musician, and natural philosopher. Holding a Master of Science (MSci) and PhD in theoretical physics, Dr. Young transitioned from academia to a career as a music producer, known by the alias Hedflux. His journey led him to Central America and Hawaii, where he immersed himself in shamanic practices and alchemy. His first book, A Fool's Wisdom - Science, Conspiracies & The Secret Art of Alchemy (2024), challenges contemporary scientific dogmas through the lens of alchemy. Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin was a titan of the airship world - of aviation in general, in fact. The inventor of the rigid airship, he founded a company which manufacturers airships to this day and which was responsible for the creation of some of the most iconic aircraft of all time. But this was not supposed to be his legacy. An army officer and diplomat, he faithfully served the Kingdom of Wurttemberg and the German Empire that followed, through a time of political and social upheaval, until his beloved military career was suddenly and brutally taken away from him. Bereft, humiliated and cast adrift, the Count turned his energy to a subject that had interested him for years; the problem of human flight. Moving mountains to get his first airship built, he ensured that his name would be synonymous with lighter-than-air flight forever. This is the story of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin and his dream of the rigid airship.

PREVIEW: #AIRSHIPS: BRITISH EMPIRE: Conversaton with S.C> Gwynne, author HIS MAJESTY'S AIRSHIP, re the decision f the Empire to construct the most experimental rigid airship ever designed and launch in bad weather for a roundtrip from England to India. More tonight. 1923
Tonight, we'll read the opening to “With the Night Mail” an early sci-fi novella set in the year 2000, written by Rudyard Kipling, and published in 1905. This story describes an airship postal worker making a routine night run from London to Quebec. In this universe, the Aerial Board of Control (or A.B.C.), a fictional supranational organization dedicated to the control and aid of airship (also known as dirigible) traffic across the entire planet. In our age of commonplace intercontinental air travel, one needs to bear in mind that Kipling wrote this story at a time when the first successful powered flight, which lasted a total of 12 seconds, took place only two years prior. An airship, or dirigible is a type of lighter-than-air aircraft that can navigate through the air flying under its own power. They use buoyancy from a lifting gas that is less dense than the surrounding air to achieve the lift needed to stay airborne. In early dirigibles, the lifting gas used was hydrogen, due to its high lifting capacity and ready availability, but the inherent flammability led to hydrogen airships being rendered obsolete. The alternative lifting gas, helium gas is not flammable, but is rare and relatively expensive. Significant amounts were first discovered in the United States and for a while helium was only available for airship usage in North America. Airships were the first aircraft capable of controlled powered flight, and were most commonly used before the 1940s; their use decreased as their capabilities were surpassed by those of aeroplanes. From the 1960s, helium airships have been used where the ability to hover for a long time outweighs the need for speed and maneuverability, such as advertising, tourism, camera platforms, geological surveys and aerial observation. — read by 'N' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Interview starts at 39:25 Benben / Analog The Archivist joins us for a great chat about the narrative from the 1800's and 1900's gleaned from reading thousands of newspaper articles and stories. He is an avid reader and we talk about the way this research has changed lately, how it's harder to find some newspapers, and his thoughts about the change and quality of news since then. Are 'they' starting to limit what we can see? We get into his process, when something pops into his head, his NDE / OBE, his research into ancient religious views on the death state, the gap between the early 1800's to mid 1800's, the golden years from 1850 - 1920, and why and what happened to reset our reality. The Ether, Radium, Airships, Building on buildings, common languages, petrifaction, vapour canopy collapse, Younger Dryas, the New Madrid Event, the Smithsonian, and WW1 are all discussed. We also chat about the time frames, Alaska, America below the ice level, the biblical flood, cometary impact, plasmas petrifying organic matter, rare materials, the seasons, all tropical, Dragons and Giants, and Big game hunting dinosaurs. https://x.com/1_analog_9 https://www.youtube.com/@1_analog_9 In the intro we chat about Cosmic Summit, YouTube cancelling 35,000 channels https://cosmicsummit.com/ If you would rather watch: https://rumble.com/v4wf1zc-analog-the-archivist.-ancient-america-and-the-20th-century-reset.html https://rokfin.com/stream/48845 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycfUp5q9Dtc Help support the show, because we can't do it without ya. In 1897 a wave of UFO sightings were reported across the Midwest, United States and just like today the media and the debunkers launched a campaign of parallel narratives and personal attacks in an attempt to discredit the witnesses. Listen to learn more.
"Nothing will ever equal that moment of joyous excitement which filled my whole being when I felt myself flying away from the earth. It was not mere pleasure, it was perfect bliss. Having escaped from the frightful torments of persecution and of calumny, I felt that I was answering all in rising above all… On whatever side we looked, all was glorious; a cloudless sky above, a most delicious view around." Imagine the thrill of being one of the first humans to experience flight. Imagine the courage it must have taken to set foot in a balloon and allow yourself to be transported into the clouds, not knowing what it would be like or whether you would survive the experience. Every time we board an aircraft today, we owe a debt to these brave pioneers. Join podcast host Nick Rogers for episode 2 as we trace the early days of flight, from Greek mythology to the first manned flights in balloons.

'We can never have luck without a cat on board' he said. If this were true, the crew would have been better off with a different cat. "The story, about what goes up, must eventually come down, perfectly weaves the tale of the rise and fall of nearly every subject in the story.I got today's information from: https://animals.howstuffworks.com/animal-facts/kiddo-the-cat.htmhttps://www.airships.net/first-attempt-fly-atlantic-wellman-vaniman-airship-america/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawley_Harvey_Crippenhttps://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/paul-von-hindenburghttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_(airship)https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/hindenburg-adorned-swastika/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melvin_Vanimanhttps://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/paul-von-hindenburgLook up Melvin Vaniman - his artwork and what he did before getting on these ships is a whole other story that someone else can tell. He climbed skyscraper poles to take photos, he was like, a stunt cameraman before getting into dirigible business! And there is a famous photo of him with Kiddo the “lucky” cat - he didn't look unhappy given how upset he was with the cat at the beginning of their journey. I'd like to think they made up before parting ways. PLEASE SHARE THIS EPISODE in your social media so others who loves strange and macabre stories can listen too! https://weirddarkness.com/mystery-airships-in-1896-97-america/IN THIS EPISODE: Stories of people in the past looking to the skies to see UFOs are becoming more and more common as we learn more of our history. But there was some very strange goings on in 1896 and 1897 with some flying contraptions, weird looking people, bizarre languages, and even a close encounter of the third kind. (America's Mystery Airships of 1896-97) *** From UFOs in 1896-97… to UFOs in 1966-67. But this time we add another element. Not only did a young man see a UFO, but the encounter appears to have taken him outside of time – and even changed his personality in the process! (Missing Time in 1966) *** In Blake Edward's 1965 classic comedy film, ‘The Great Race', the heroic Leslie and the despicable Professor Fate, engage in an epic automobile race from New York to Paris in the early 1900s. The film is actually based on a real race that took place in 1908 – and as hilarious as the ‘The Great Race' movie was, the actual race took stupidity to a whole new level. This week on Everybody in the Pool, we're going full sci-fi. And when we say full sci-fi, we mean back to science that was conceived in the 17th century and is only now being perfected by a startup that's trying to bring back lighter-than-air ships (blimps and aerostats) in the hopes of eventually moving cargo around in a zero-emissions and possibly even carbon-negative way. Diana Little of Anuma Aerospace explains the tech and and how proving the co-inventor of calculus wrong is only part of the, ahem, equation.RESOURCES & LINKSAnuma Aerospace: https://www.anumaaerospace.com/Subscribe to the Everybody in the Pool newsletter: https://www.mollywood.co/Visit the website: https://www.everybodyinthepool.com/Become a member and get an ad-free version of the podcast: https://plus.acast.com/s/everybody-in-the-poolPlease subscribe and tell your friends about EITP!
