Madeline, Julian, and Emilio continue their cycle of Offbeat Musicals with a "Two-Shot" on a pair of turn-of-the-millennium glam-rock extravaganzas: Todd Haynes' "Velvet Goldmine" (1998) and John Cameron Mitchell's "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" (2001). Marking their fifth - yes, fifth - discussion on a Todd Haynes film, the trio begin by unpacking "Velvet Goldmine" and its refraction of the legacies of 1970s glam-rock icons such as David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, T. Rex, and Roxy Music. Presented in "Citizen Kane"-like fashion, the film conveys a distinct impression of a well-known popular music era without ever mentioning any of the aforementioned artists by name, and wandering in and out of the realms that often classify a musical. Premiering around the same time off-Broadway was the show that would then be adapted into the second film of focus, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," unambiguously a musical, but one for people who may less typically gravitate to the genre. Drawing from many of the same influences in music, "Hedwig" portrays the unique story of the titular performer, from her fraught upbringing in East Berlin to her stateside music career with backing band the Angry Inch, and the numerous experiences that fan her rock-and-roll flames along the way.Listen to Dougie's Glam-a-Rama here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOjsoFA6he4_bWfjlCtNFoPf9Xr2cOofn&si=Vth2DPJed7RKNa7xIf you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. This week, we are welcoming home the astronauts by playing songs written by the star man himself: David Bowie! What better way to celebrate our mission to the moon than by hearing other bands cover his varied tunes. The Thin White Duke was a rock n' roll chameleon who influenced music, film, and fashion for over 50 years. Considered one of the most influential artists of all time, he was the most underground mainstream artist, creating the blueprint for many to follow. Hope we freak you out and that ya dig! What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing. Songs this week include: The Get Up Kids – “Sufragette City (David Bowie)” from Eudora (2001) Infectious Grooves – “Fame (David Bowie)” from Sarsippius' Ark (1993) Small Town Titans – “Heroes (David Bowie)” from Heroes - Single (2026) Bauhaus – “Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie)” from Ziggy Stardust - Single (1982) Contraband – “Hang On To Yourself (David Bowie)” from Contraband (1991) DREAMCAR – “Moonage Daydream (David Bowie)” from Dream - EP (2024) Enuff Z'Nuff – “The Jene Genie (David Bowie)” from 10 (2000) Classless Act – “Starman (David Bowie)” from Classless Act Does Bowie - Single (2023) Saigon Kick – “Space Oddity (David Bowie)” from Water (1993) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts! Formed in Stockholm in 1983, Glorious Bankrobbers quickly earned notoriety for their uncompromising sound and electrifying live performances. Their 1984 debut, produced by Kee Marcello (Easy Action/Europe), marked the arrival of a band destined to push boundaries.By 1989, the group cemented their place in rock history with Dynamite Sex Doze—a landmark release that became a cornerstone of Swedish sleaze and action rock. The title track earned rotation on MTV's Headbangers Ball, while their U.S. promo tour, including the cult live album Live at CBGB's N.Y.C., expanded their reputation worldwide. Now entering a new era with Wild Kingdom Records, Glorious Bankrobbers recently released Intruder in late February. Delivering 12 brand-new tracks, the album distills everything that defines the band—grit, swagger, and heart—while propelling their sound into bold new territory. With Intruder, Glorious Bankrobbers reaffirm their place at the forefront of Scandinavian rock. Louder, harder, and hungrier than ever, the band stands as living proof that true rock 'n' roll never dies.HEAVY caught up with frontman Olle Hillborg to find out more. We start by asking him how the early response has been for Intruder."It's been great, actually," he smiled. "We've got so many responses from all over the world, thinking that this is the best album of the three releases. We have released three albums in the last three to four years and this is the best one, people have been thinking."In the full interview, Olle emphasized that Glorious Bankrobbers deliberately retained a straight rock-and-roll sound, recorded without AI and using classic gear with recurring producer Robert Pehrsson. The conversation reviewed the band's origins in Stockholm in 1984, early influences from sleaze/glam and punk-pop, and how their timing aligned them with the broader sleaze wave of the late 1980s and early 1990s.Discussion moved to the band's live reputation and early-stage behavior at pubs and parties, followed by the impact of a drummer's death that led to a 16-year recording hiatus. Olle explained the rationale for restarting with a sound consistent with their legacy rather than shifting styles and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

For this holiday week, we're releasing an episode that initially was available only to subscribers through GrabBagCollab.com and Apple Podcasts. In the 1970s, Gary Glitter was a glam rock sensation: sequins, stadium anthems, and screaming teenage fans. But like Jimmy Savile, he used fame as a weapon. This bonus episode unpacks his rise, fall, and the disturbing legacy he left behind.
Glam rock was a musical movement that originated in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s. It was characterized by its flamboyant style, which included glitter, platform shoes, and outrageous clothing and makeup. In a music-packed interview, Simon Reynolds, author of "Shock and Awe: The Legacy of Glam Rock," explains the rise of glam.

He looks back here with us at … … meeting Taylor Swift – “and we both knew who the other was!” … a total of 2,700 gigs – “not counting prisons, In-Stores, Port-A-Stacks and picket lines” … old blokes trying to take selfies … finding old diaries in his archives and sensing how the memory plays tricks … songs that get you out of trouble on stage … bootlegging albums on his reel-to-reel, aged 12, complete with noises off - eg “Bridge Over Troubled Water plus a voice telling me Reach For The Sky was on telly!” … a word-perfect recitation of Mr Tambourine Man … listening to the Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll when the rest of the school was Glam Rock … buying Ronnie Lane's amp, “like returning home with a religious relic” … “the power of music”: meeting someone who'd heard him on the radio beyond the Iron Curtain … anxiety about American border control: “I was advised to get a new phone. As if that'll make any difference. I'm Billy Bragg, political songwriter!” … lost off-grid in Salt Lake City in the days before internet … “Music can't change the world but it gives you the ability to think it can be changed” …plus Ian McLagan, Desmond Dekker, Ry Cooder, Jam b-sides and Motown Chartbusters Vol 3. On this week's show, we spend quality time with new records from Wednesday and Amanda Shires, spin fresh tracks from Parlor Greens, Tune-Yards and The Mountain Goats, and give it up for season two of HBO Max's Peacemaker. All this and much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. Send us a textThe Transference is an indie rock/power pop band from Chicago. Dark themes get paired with playful lines and reflections on inter- and inner-connectedness. Their sound, a complex tapestry of alt rock pop, bears the indelible mark of Psychedelic and Glam Rock influences, intricately woven with threads of indie melodic pop rock. It's a testament to their capacity to transcend the ordinary, transforming the eclectic into the exceptional.Support the showPodcast edited by Paul Martin.Theme song courtesy of M&R Rush.www.rocknrollchicagopodcast.com

This week, we welcome listener, weekly socials commenter, and all-around cool mother scratcher: Jeremy Patterson to the show for a round of our very special game called, “WILD CARD”! Robert and Jeremy go head-to-head in a very close game of: guess the band being played. Of course, we have the amazing InObscuria banner of logos as a visual aid for the players! You'll notice a lot of double-point bands from our “Aussie” category this go round as well. Pour yourself a cup of Toka-Cola, and play along…What is it that we do here at InObscuria? Besides conducting ridiculous game shows, we exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we take a listen to all 3, as we let our contestants pick a randomly obscure song by the decade in which it was released from a creatively curated playlist. We're so honored to have Jeremy join us, especially after all that smack-talking he did about being able to best our Aussie buddy Craig Elvin back on his game episode (ep. 226)! Can he back up his boasts? Find out! I'm capping off the Lollapalooza Series with today's Part 3 from Chicago's Grant Park, including interviews with first-timers Malik Flint of bLAck pARty, along with Evan Ojeda and Charlie Baird of San Diego rock band benches.Malik is an LA-based artist originally from Arkansas (hence the LA and AR of bLAck pARty), who for over a decade now has been creating compelling beats mixing funk, afrobeats and hip hop with a dash of country and R&B. The excitement of this young artist has been on full display and he's cultivated a working relationship with Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino as well as Issa Rae. His latest album, The Last Dance, is out there now!Evan Ojeda and Charlie Baird are childhood pals and now make up one-half of the band benches. First timers at Lolla, these guys bring the SoCal energy to the festival. Their latest effort, an EP entitled “Kill The Lights” has put them on the map as a force in the glam rock world, and I'm excited for what's in store for this fun and super talented band from California!==============================Episode Chapters:00:00 Episode Greeting with Host Josh Rosenberg and Introducing Malik Flint04:55 Interview with Malik Flint aka bLAck pARty20:05 Malik Flint wrap-up with Host Josh Rosenberg21:49 Introducing benches24;40 Interview with Evan Ojeda and Charlie Baird of benches43:30 benches Wrap-Up with Host Josh Rosenberg================================For more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

At its best, rock is a transcendent experience, something that takes us somewhere away from the ordinary, the normal, and the safe…there's a huge fantasy element to it…done right, rock removes us from this universe and transports us someplace completely different where anything could happen—at least for a little while. Sometimes the music alone is enough to take us there…but there's so much more that can be done to enhance the experience. Costuming, for one…make-up and wild hair make a nice addition…how about going hard on the visuals and theatrics?...sure!...why not?...can't hurt…how about dropping in some sci-fi…good…what about sex and horror and shock and the occult and then really, really exaggerate everything?... Bring it on. And you know what else might be fun?...a big dollop of sexual ambiguity…that'll freak people out. What I've just described is a lot of today's music…the rock era has been around long enough and has gone through so many bouts of extremism that it seems like there's we can't be shocked by anything a rock star does anymore. But there was a time in the very late 60s and early 70s when a specific group of artists were very shocking…they did and said things that were so outrageous and wild that they kinda knocked the planet around on its axis a little bit. They also set in motion some knock-on effects that changed everything about rock…and then they became extinct…but the influence and fallout from that four or five-year period is still being seen and felt today…you just have to know where to look. This is the surprising history of glam rock…it still lives and it can still make things very interesting. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
