Susan La Flesche Picotte (1865-1915) & Keiko Okami (1859-1941): Today we will be finishing the wonderful story of Susan La Flesche, the first Native American doctor, and then share the “bonus” story of Keiko Okami, one of the first Japanese woman doctors! Both women loved and served Jesus in the midst of difficulties and oppression among their own people. While Susan fought for alcohol prohibition and had to earn the trust of Native Americans who were suspicious of “white ways,” Keiko grappled with the cultural shame associated with Japanese women in the medical field. Both ladies have testimonies that are definitely worth knowing! Susan La Flesche Picotte, M.D.: Omaha Indian Leader and Reformer by Benson Tong A Warrior of the People by Joe Starita

The Irishman is envious of the length of this podcast. But there was so much to talk about! While Susan sits dazed, stupefied, sooty, unsure of where she is, what she’s doing, how math works, and whether or not she’ll ever get to Stone Manor, the revolting men around her solve the problems posed by … Continue reading "Episode 77 – Man. Today on Feminine Roadmap we are talking about finding love after loss. No matter what age you are, losing a spouse is a difficult experience and the journey through the grief is very personal. For many people, after they have grieved, they find themselves desiring to find love again. Finding love after loss can be a challenging journey to navigate – from online dating to blind dates to social events- and what works best for one person may not work for another. Today’s guest Susan S. Etkin explains that finding love after loss later in life is even more interesting say the least. Susan found herself widowed at 58 and it took her time to wade through her grief. She used writing as a tool to process and express what she was going through, the result is a novel that follows a woman in midlife who is trying to find love after loss. Susan believes that it’s important to have hope, that life is a gift and that it should be lived. She encourages listeners to go out there and see who might be waiting for you! While Susan hasn’t yet found her love after loss, she has found joy in writing about women who do. Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the weirdest of them all? While Susan can’t take credit for being the most interesting student at school, she can claim the superlative of “creepiest” and, perhaps, “most likely to facilitate murder.” Burn-o-meter: 1.5 Overall rating: 6.75 white gloves
Susan Suhar-Phillips: Interior Design Director at HDR Today in The Lounge, Susan Suhar-Phillips, Interior Design Director at HDR, joins Nick at the Porcelanosa showroom in the Merchandise Mart. Susan is Nick's longest-known friend to ever be on the show. Not only did they go to Junior High together but they also lived down the street from each other growing up! On this episode, Susan discusses how she got started in interior design and the variety of jobs she's had in the industry. Susan also talks about her big move from Chicago to LAand how it made a HUGE change in her networking pool. Getting to Know Susan Susan is the Los Angeles Design Director for HDR, which is a large country-wide firm. She assists with projects at these sister firms as well. Susan has worked with HDR for about a year now. Before that, she was at Eckenhoff Saunders as their Interior Design Director. Susan originally started out in the fine arts program at The Art Institute of Chicago when she found that being an artist was not a financially successful career path for her as she moved out of her parents home. So, she went in a different direction and tried environmental studies and sciences, but didn't really like it. On a whim, she decided to take a drafting class at her local community college and at 21, fell in love with it. It was the perfect marriage of her creative side and her science side. This class gave her the exposure to architecture, drafting and interiors that she needed for the “ah ha” moment she'd been waiting for. Susan first received her associate's degree in Interior Design and then continued her education back at The Art Institute for Interior Architecture. She describes her community college education as gaining the technical knowledge while The Art Institute taught her to push the design envelope. It forced her to look at the world and its interior environments completely differently. While Susan was in school she also did a couple of internships. Her very first internship was in community college with a furniture dealer. This experience allowed her to become familiar with vendors, materials, pricing, and application. While attending The Art Institute, she worked an internship with VOA which later turned into a full-time design position. VOA exposed Susan to the world of interior architecture and gave Susan a glimpse of how to collaborate with large teams, work on big projects, work with high profile clients, and work late nights. Don't forget to bring your portfolio to your internship interviews like Susan might have ;). Networking is Key!... But it May Take Some Time Susan just moved to LA from Chicago a year ago, and as a result, she now has to start over with her professional network. She feels like networking is the only way to broaden your project base. Susan explains that the more exposed you are, even with your industry peers including competitors, vendors, and clients, the more you're respected and understood as a contender in the industry. Moving can be stressful enough but it also took about a year for Susan to get used to her new routines, get acclimated with project deliverables, and accustomed to her commutes/travel before she started networking. She now has a good handle on everything and is ready to start. The Business Today As a BD, business developer, Susan can go out into the field and promote her company. She gave us some insight that HDR is moving away from hospitality and becoming more of a healthcare giant. Susan also mentioned that when Gary Wheeler joined HDR and took helm of the workplace, he made a significant change to the vision of HDR and where they are going design-wise. This vision is to become more interiors driven. HDR is going to be including the workplace and have strong market sectors between healthcare, work, education, science, and technology. As Design Director, Susan, has six designers that work underneath her with experience in design ranging from fifteen years to jus...

Susan is the 31 year old mother. Her son John is 2 1/2 and they continue to enjoy a breastfeeding relationship. This does not seem unusual for Susan as she knows she was breastfed until she was 3 years old. Susan planned a home birth with her husband Robert, midwife and midwives assistant and doula at the birth. Her son weighed 9 lbs. 4 oz. Breastfeeding for her was something that was not an option and was just something she knew she would do. Susan shares how she navigated the very early days of newborn breastfeeding. She was initially concerned when her baby did not seem to be hungry the first 4 hours. She did realize though that he needed to rest, he pooped and then all of a sudden he was interested in eating and they never looked back. It took her a few weeks until she felt like she found her groove with breastfeeding. It took her a little time to find what positions were most comfortable with John and what felt right for her. While Susan was never approached by a store owner who asked her to not breastfeed in their store, she shares with us her prepared speech if that should ever happen! She also feels that it is very important to find a pediatrician that fully supports breastfeeding.
Bards Logic welcomes 2011 FreedomWorks Sons and Daughters of Liberty Award Winner Susan Nielsen to discuss her website http://www.theconstitutionalconservatives.com/ Mission Statement: "Encouraging "ethical activism" among fellow American Patriots by promoting principled and conservative values through education and study. Promoting honesty in our education systems by teaching the true importance of our U.S. History. To bring Americans together-by working in our Communities. To reform the Republican party. Our Guest: Susan Nielsen is the owner and Administrator of TheConstitutionalConservatives[dot]com (aka 912Communique[dot]com and Stamppeeve[dot]com). Having heard the call to Conservatism, seeing the growing lack of respect and knowledge she noted in our youth, she was eager to become involved when the opportunity to help arose. While Susan noticed that “We the people” wanted to use their voice by sending letters and making phone calls, they did not want to write the letters. Susan first fulfilled a need to offer pre-written letters to the concerns to our Government leaders. Stampeeve[dot]com was born. "We use stamps because we are peeved!" This became fairly successful. 912Communique[dot]com was built to offer a place for Glenn Becks 912 Project members to better communicate. She redesigned the 912Communique website and it became TheConstitutionalConservatives .com to express her desire to offer Constitutional education and actions to an apathetic society.
