We have been dying to discuss an article called  “Why Aren't Professors Braver?” since it was first published in The Chronicle of Higher Education back in September. It's by the psychologist Paul Bloom and it starts with an ode to the professoriate:We tend to be pretty smart. We are sometimes socially inept, but in a sweet way. We are genuinely excited about ideas…We are often generous... mentoring students in ways that don't lead to any tangible rewards.  And we are a peaceable lot. If you're sitting at a bar, minding your own business, and some drunk takes a swing at you, the drunk is unlikely to be a professor. In spite of our many praiseworthy traits, Bloom says that professors aren't particularly courageous. When controversial or sensitive topics arise, he claims that we tend to be “too censorious and too self-censoring.”  “Why,” Bloom asks, “are even tenured professors, people with the most secure jobs on Earth, so unwilling to speak their minds?”We have posed this question many times since we both became faculty members--and we could think of no better person to hash it out with than our friend, UPenn professor Jonathan Zimmerman.Jon is a historian of education who has had a long and illustrious career, first at West Chester University, then at New York University and now at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of many books, including Whose America: Culture Wars in the Public Schools, Too Hot to Handle: A Global History of Sex Education, and The Amateur Hour: A History of College Teaching in America. We were thrilled to have him join us on Banished.Show Notes* Here is the article that inspired this episode: Paul Bloom, “Why Aren't Professors Braver?”, Chronicle Review, September 24, 2025* The term “excellent sheep” comes from William Deresiewicz's 2014 book, Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life* See Jon Zimmerman's official UPenn bio here* The *circling the wagons* article Jon references is available here This is a public episode. In this episode Mike, Rich and Steve tackle 8 new releases - as usual, click the link to see a trailer for each film. We kick off with TIN SOLDIER (Signature Entertainment), which finds Scott Eastwood as an ex cult member recruited by a shadow ops team to re-enter his former home, a compound run by an ex army General. (NB: this is now available to stream on Amazon Prime). 40 ACRES (Vertigo Releasing) is one of 2 contenders this week for a top 10 spot - a post apocalyptic tale of a family defending their farm from marauding cannibals! SAINT CLARE (101 Films) is my 2nd contender. Bella Thorn stars as Clare Bleeker, a high school student chosen by God to rid her town of sex traffickers. OSIRIS (Signature Entertainment) is the latest from action auteur William Kaufman, and concerns a Special Forces unit abducted by alien warriors! FUTRA DAYS (Reel 2 Reel Films) is about a man who travels 3 years into the future to try and fix his relationship with his girlfriend. THE ACTIVATED MAN (High Fliers) is one of Tony Todd's last films, and he gets a decent chunk of screentime here, helping a man defend against a malevolent spirit. THE BANISHED (Blue Finch Film Releasing) is an Australian horror set in the outback, where a young woman finds herself lost and injured while searching for her brother. REPUTATION (Miracle Media) shares a theme with last episode's Salvable, as a young drug dealer has to confront the toxic relationship he has with his old friend, just released from prison and making waves for all concerned. Our Short Shot is CHARLIE FOXTROT, a proof-of-concept film about two constables who find themselves in a deadly confrontation on a farm. Click the link to see the whole short film! Our DTV Throwback is something of a find, and credit to friend of the show RamonWrites for bringing it to our attention! SWORD OF HEAVEN is destined to be a cult classic. We watched a low-res version on YouTube - click the link for the whole film and enjoy its craziness! In a special episode, Nikki & Brie sit down with some of the standouts from season three of The Traitors, Chrishell Stause, Wells Adams, and Sam Asghari, to hear more about the drama, intrigue, and thrills that happened in and out of the castle! Brie hosts the conversation, and things kick off with Chrishell sharing a special message to Nikki after the way things ended between them in the castle, Sam reveals which cast member's demeanor bothered him, Wells is still confused why he had to leave The Traitors so early, and Nikki has specific ideas about the perceptions that some people on the cast projected on the rest of the cast. Names were a big issue for some of the cast, getting the right at the round tables, in interviews, and even at the reunion. Wells went to extreme lengths to get everyone's names correctly, even if they didn't get his right. Chrishell, Wells, Sam, and Nikki talk about their personal growth, their icks, some messy gameplay by the Traitors, and everyone's adoration of the Bambis. They break out the chalkboards one last time to cover Gabby Windey's wedding, who the best dressed on the show was, who was flirty on the show, who from the cat might join OnlyFans, the most dramatic, and their picks for who would be their emergency contact. Brie then puts everyone in the hot seat for a fast round of Would You Banish that sees Chrishell, Wells, Sam, and Nikki talking about backstabbing in the castle, sex do's and don'ts, body counts, food etiquette, exes, and much more. Wells also talks about getting behind the bar for the next season of Bachelor in Paradise. Chrishell is up to something big after season 9 of Selling Sunset, and Sam has some great movie roles lined up in his future, which he's excited about. The episode ends with Chrishell, Wells, Sam, and Nikki giving their Traitors-themed Inspiration & Affirmation and getting the last word on The Traitors season three! Follow Chrishell on Instagram Follow Wells on Instagram Follow Sam on Instagram  Call Nikki & Brie at 833-GARCIA2 and leave a voicemail! Banished Player Exit Interview | The Traitors US Season 3 Ep 9 Welcome to RHAP's coverage of ALL the Traitors iterations from around the world, including New Zealand, Australia, and Canada. The Traitors US is a high-stakes reality competition set in a secluded castle, where contestants must work together to complete challenges and earn a prize pot—while rooting out the secret traitors hidden among them. Today, Rob Cesternino and Pooya chat with the most recently banished player of The Traitors US Season 3. Rob Cesternino and Pooya host an exit interview with Carolyn Wiger, the latest banished contestant from Traders. Carolyn opens up about her experiences, the emotional toll of the game, and her interactions with fellow contestants. Carolyn shares her thoughts on the intense dynamics at the round table, where she faced off against Danielle. Despite her initial confidence in allies like Dylan, Carolyn found herself navigating a complex web of alliances and betrayals. She candidly discusses the emotional impact of social media criticism, emphasizing the importance of empathy and understanding in the face of online negativity. A key moment in the interview is Carolyn's reflection on her impulsive decision-making during the game. She admits to reacting emotionally, particularly during the round table discussions, where she felt triggered by the treatment of fellow contestant Tom. This emotional response, she explains, was driven by her own experiences of feeling dismissed and misunderstood. Carolyn also touches on her missed opportunity to collaborate with Rob, revealing that preconceived notions and fear of being a "zero-vote finalist" influenced her decisions. Despite these challenges, Carolyn remains proud of her authentic gameplay and the connections she formed. Rob, Pooya, and Carolyn discuss: - Carolyn's alliance with Danielle and Dylan, and the subsequent betrayal - Emotional reactions at the round table, particularly towards Tom's treatment - The "dumb coffin theory" and Sandra's advice to stay quiet - Missed opportunity to work with Rob due to preconceived notions - Carolyn's struggle with social media criticism and her commitment to authenticity Listen to the full episode for a deeper dive into Carolyn's experiences and insights. Our friend and colleague Stony Brook sociologist Musa al-Gharbi has a new book out. And it's a tour-de-force. We Have Never Been Woke is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the economic, political and cultural divides between the haves and the have-nots in the United States. We were delighted to host Musa for a book talk on the Carleton campus last month. He spoke with Amna in front a packed house. This is episode 2. Episode 1 is available here. Show Notes* On the limitations of diversity training, see this piece from Musa, “Diversity is Important. Diversity-Related Training is Terrible.” Also see this piece we wrote in Inside Higher Ed, “Don't Mistake Training for Education.” And this short, animated explainer video we made, “Training is Performative. Education is Transformative”* Georgetown philosopher Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò wrote the book on elite capture; here's a précis in the Boston Review. And this piece by Táíwò, published in The Philosopher, is also worth reading: “Being-In-The-Room Privilege: Elite Capture and Epistemic Deference”* Creating a Class: College Admissions and the Education of Elites by Mitchell Stevens is arguably the best book ever written on how the many advantages of the rich and well-off accumulate in the race to get into the most prestigious schools* On the incentives for students of color to highlight their trauma in college admissions essays, this NYT piece is excellent, “When I Applied to College, I Didn't Want to ‘Sell My Pain.'” On “racial gamification” in college admissions, see Tyler Austin Harper, “I Teach at an Elite College. Here's a Look Inside the Racial Gaming of Admissions”* College essays are more strongly correlated with social class than SAT scores. See this journal article by A.J. Alvero et al.* On the question of whether college admissions tests drive or reflect social inequalities, see this Banished episode (“Should More Colleges Drop the SAT and ACT?”) and this article in Inside Higher Ed (“Tests are not the source of inequities in American society”)* On the test-optional debate, see this article from the New York Times, this study from Dartmouth College and these comments from the MIT Dean of Admissions* Bertrand Cooper, “Who Actually Gets to Create Black Pop Culture?” (Current Affairs, May/June 2021)* Matt Taibbi discussed the controversy surrounding former Intercept journalist Lee Fang here This is a public episode. Spoiler Alert! If you're not caught up on season 3 of The Traitors, then you'll want to watch episode 5 as soon as possible!  Okay, if you are all caught up, then you KNOW! Today, Nikki is going to talk ALL about her time in the castle, alliances, puzzles, conspiracies, and that epic Roundtable! First, Nikki admits that being away from Matteo was very hard, and she found support from Dolores and Britney when it came to being away from their kids for the show.  And Nikki's getting filled in on what the other cast members were saying and how much garbage Bob the Drag Queen was feeding her. It's a lot more confusing in the moment when you're dealing with strategy, overreactions, and Traitor hunting! Nikki also explains what was going on with her during the riddle challenge and why she wasn't aggressive smashing urns to play for the shield. It might be a first for both Nikki and The Traitors! Brie also asks Nikki about Boston Rob's strategy, manipulation, and how confusion can quickly escalate during a Roundtable. Nikki also has some questions about the tactics of The Traitors and how their lack of alignment created a messy situation for The Faithful.  Nikki also opens up about Gabby and Chrishell, the other Bambis, voting for her banishment from the castle and what she'd like to see happen next season of the show.  The episode closes out with Nikki's classic choice for Inspiration & Affirmation and a little commentary on her monumental exit from The Traitors.  Call Nikki & Brie at 833-GARCIA2 and leave a voicemail!
