Today I am joined by Susan Clinton, doctorate in PT who some might call the guru of pelvic floor physical therapy! She is an award winning PT and co-owner of Embody Physiotherapy and Wellness, on faculty at Andrews University in the Doctor of Science in PT program, the host of the podcast Tough to treat and so much more. Check the show notes for her full bio.She happens to be a long time friend yet the offering of this conversation really had me thinking of all the clients I have that experience urinary frequency, incontinence or constipation./bowel issues. I know. I know…no one likes to actually talk about these things but it's time that it's more out in the open folks because more women (and men frankly) have these issues and no one knows what quote unquote “normal” is or what to do about it when you discover it's not normal, the connection between breath, gut health, stress and triggering into the “fight or flight” autonomic nervous system, over-hydration, how we create a cranky bladder…Our body's ability to detox naturally happens through bowel, bladder and sweat. If you get those things regulated and shift some lifestyle things around in the meantime you support natural detox daily. So key to overall health.Today we talk about what's normal and what's not, what contributes to these issues of bowel and bladder and GI and what to do about it. The need for this information and what we uncover in the conversation is so needed so I am glad you are here with us to learn. In her series on the pelvic floor, Michelle re-airs her fun and educational conversation with physical therapist, Susan Clinton, and Michelle discuss the profound connection between our pelvic floor and our voice. Susan explains how our pelvic floor functions, ways to become more aware of our pelvic floor muscles, and what a ‘kegel' exercise or pelvic floor lift is and isn't. (So many women are taught to do this exercise incorrectly.)  And, no, leaking urine is not just a normal part of pregnancy and birth! "A lot of mothers will come in and see me as a PT and say, "You know, I've been doing my pelvic floor exercises or kegels for a long time, and it's not helping." And sure enough they can actually lift their pelvic floor very nicely. But I notice that when they cough, that pelvic floor muscle isn't responding and coming up, or [if] they sneeze. You know, so it's not working when they need it. They can make it work, but what we want to do is make it work when we need it. We've got [to have] that pelvic floor coming up and reacting so that we don't leak [urine]."—Susan Clinton About Susan:Susan C. This was our first "destination" podcast in that Eric and I traveled out to Dr. Clinton's clinic: Embody Physiotherapy and Wellness in Sewickley, PA. Antony, based out of Sydney, Australia, had come to Pittsburgh to teach a continuing education course with Susan and we were lucky enough to connect with both of them the night before their course began. In this episode we hit on: -Pelvic health for the general public -Pelvic health for the high level athlete -The importance of screening and history taking with a person you may -suspect have a pelvic health issue -Accepting that results are happening, but challenging the "why" behind them happening -The importance of building trust with patients and how to empower them
