In the wake of https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/11/nyregion/hasidic-yeshivas-schools-new-york.html (the recent extensive New York Times investigation) into Hasidic yeshivas, a fierce and often acrimonious debate has emerged about the ethics of covering the Hasidic world from the outside, how private institutions that receive government funds are accountable to the broader public, and religious minority communities' right to insist on their way of life, even when it brings them into conflict with the state. On this episode, Jewish Currents Contributing Editor Joshua Leifer hosts a conversation between Naftuli Moster, executive director of Young Advocates for Fair Education (https://yaffed.org/who-we-are/ (YAFFED)), and Frieda Vizel, a writer and https://friedavizel.com/ (tour guide) of Hasidic Brooklyn. Moster and Vizel—who both grew up in, and later left, Hasidic communities—draw on their own educational experiences to offer very different perspectives on the Times article and reactions to it, on the best way to advocate for change in the Hasidic world, and on what's at stake in the fight over secular education. The idea of America as a true “land of opportunity” is anathema to their ideal of a nation of “classes and orders” where every person knows their place and morbidly rich white men are in charge. Crazy Alert! Trump Is pushing FBI looking for Hillary's emails at Mar-a-Lago?! The Internet solves Trump's "Peekaboo" Letitia James slur. John Harwood sums It up in a tweet - the juxtaposition of two events in NYC today - Biden's speech to the UN and the NY AG's fraud suit against the Trumps - underscores the simplest contrast: a decent man who believes in the American experiment has replaced an indecent con man, who does not, as president of the US. Naftuli Moster and Anita Altman of YAFFED tell us that private & religious schools must provide a secular education, equal to what was provided by a public school. A Yeshiva grad, Mr. Moster describes how shockingly unprepared he was for further studies.
Naftuli Moster, Executive Director of Yaffed, presents his Valley Beit Midrash lecture "Secular Education in Hasidic Yeshivas: Why We Should All Care" at before a roundtable audience at Temple Chai (www.templechai.com/) in Phoenix, AZ. ABOUT THIS LECTURE: Most Hasidic boys’ schools in NY and NJ provide little to no secular education to their tens of thousands of students. Nearly 100% of Hasidic boys graduate without a high school diploma. New York State Education Law requires that non-public schools provide a curriculum that is “substantially equivalent” to that of public schools, meaning a minimum of English, math, science, and social studies lessons. Most Hasidic male high school graduates are illiterate in core subjects, barely fluent in the English language, unqualified for most decent-paying jobs, and ill-equipped to navigate the broader world. Hasidic Jews are the fastest growing population in NYC, outpacing every other Jewish denomination. By 2030, 30% of Brooklyn’s youth are predicted to be enrolled in Hasidic yeshivas. Ari Hershkowitz grew up in an insular Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, and was featured in the award-winning Netflix documentary "One of Us." He spoke to us about the toxicity of religious indoctrination, the horrific abuse he suffered as a child, his descent into drug addiction, and finally, his emergence from the darkness of religion into liberation, enlightenment, and personal success with the help of organizations like FootstepsOrg.org. Today, Ari is working with Yaffed, an education initiative for people in the Hasidic Jewish community. This was an amazing and compelling conversation with so many parallels to the experiences of ex-Muslims, and it had us asking: Are violence and terrorism really the worst of what religion has to offer, or does it go deeper than that? By focusing on the symptoms rather than the disease, are we just putting a band-aid on a cancer wound? We discuss all of this and more with the articulate, intelligent, and incredibly insightful Ari, who you can learn more about at https://Arih.me The Secular Jihadists has been made possible thanks to the gracious support of the Illuminati and the great state of Israel.
