Part 1 Afghanistan by Stephen Tanner Summary"Afghanistan" by Stephen Tanner provides a comprehensive overview of the history and complexities of Afghanistan, focusing on its geopolitical significance and the impact of various foreign invasions and internal conflicts. Tanner delves into the nation's historical context, beginning with its role as a crossroads for trade and culture, influenced by various empires throughout history, including the Persians, Greeks, and Mongols. The book explores the 19th-century Anglo-Afghan Wars, highlighting the British attempts to exert control over the region and the resulting resistance from Afghan tribes. Tanner explains how these conflicts foreshadowed future struggles and set the stage for ongoing instability.Moving into the 20th century, Tanner examines the rise of nationalism, the impact of World War II, and the Soviet invasion in 1979, which plunged Afghanistan into a brutal conflict. He discusses the emergence of the Mujahideen and the eventual rise of the Taliban, as well as the catastrophic consequences of foreign interventions and civil war.In the post-9/11 era, Tanner addresses the U.S. invasion and the subsequent efforts to rebuild the nation amidst ongoing violence and corruption. He stresses the complexities involved in nation-building in a country with deep-rooted tribal affiliations and historical grievances.Throughout the book, Tanner provides insights into the cultural, social, and political dynamics of Afghanistan, emphasizing its resilience and the persistent challenges it faces. The narrative is both a historical account and a commentary on the interaction between Afghanistan and larger global powers, making it a valuable resource for understanding the nation's tumultuous past and uncertain future.Part 2 Afghanistan AuthorStephen Tanner is an American author and military historian known for his work on the history of military conflicts, particularly in Afghanistan. His book "Afghanistan" was published in 2002. In addition to "Afghanistan," Tanner has written several other notable works, including:"The Siege of Washington: The Untold Story of the Decision to Evacuate the Capital" (2005)"A Clash of Cultures: Afghanistan in the 21st Century" (2006)"The Riddle of the Sands" (2007)"The War Against the Taliban: A Historical Perspective" (2008)Evaluating the quality of various editions, the best edition of Tanner's "Afghanistan" often cited by readers is the 2002 initial edition, as it provides the foundational analysis of the complex history and sociopolitical dynamics within Afghanistan, set against the backdrop of the early 21st-century military engagement. Later editions and adaptations may include updated content reflecting newer events, but the original offers a critical look at the historical context that shaped the region at that time.Part 3 Afghanistan Chapters"Afghanistan" by Stephen Tanner provides a comprehensive history of Afghanistan, tracing its evolution from ancient times to the modern era, particularly focusing on the sociopolitical dynamics and military conflicts that have shaped the region.Overall Theme: The overarching theme of the book revolves around the complexities of Afghanistan's identity and its pivotal role in regional and global politics. Tanner effectively examines how the interplay of local dynamics, foreign interventions, and historical legacies has created a unique yet tumultuous environment within the country. Central to the theme is the idea that Afghanistan is more than merely a battleground for external powers; it is a nation with a rich cultural heritage that has been forged through centuries of conflict and resilience.Main Chapter Content: Historical Context: The book opens with an overview of Afghanistan's early history, including its geographical significance as a crossroads of...

Battling the War Against the Family What is the next most dangerous thing that we as a society face? What is the next big battle standing against our traditional values and our understanding to be human? Culture seems to be devaluing family and the incredibly dangerous ramifications we are facing as marriage happens later and birthrates drop precipitously. It's an issue you don't hear talked about in church pulpits, but the threat is significant and we need to think more deeply about it.

There's an old Soviet joke that goes something like "the future is certain; it's the past that is unpredictable" which continues to have an eerie resonance today, as revisionism seems to be on a constant assault against past events which are challenging or complex for some people to accept based on modern social mores and values. In his new book, "The War Against the Past: Why The West Must Fight For Its History," the renowned sociologist Frank Furedi takes aim at those commiting these acts of cultural vandalism and denounces, in quite strong terms, the damage and disservice they are doing to our society by projecting these modern sensibilities upon the historical record. In this conversation with Robert Amsterdam, Furedi expands on his thesis and delves into some of the examples of victimhood and "grievance entrepreneurs" surrounding the twisting of narratives from events more than two centuries ago. When the past is rendered toxic, Furedi argues, we begin to live in an inhumane society, one where time is divided into a bad past and a rightly engineered future, and which splits people into shamefaced identities and victim identities. The author makes a call to arms to fight back, to celebrate heroes, to stop apologizing, and to embrace history, warts and all.

The endless culture wars rage on. In his new book, The War Against the Past, the sociologist Frank Furedi believes that unless what he calls “the West” fights for its history, the “grievance entrepreneurs” will take over and undermine all our hard won intellectual freedoms. It's the convention conservative argument, of course, but what's interesting about Furedi is that he used to be a revolutionary communist. So I wonder if Furedi's rightward shift is the standard intellectual fate of old leftists. Alternatively, perhaps, the woke crowd has become so corrosive that even former communists like Furedi are now manning the barricades in defense of western civilization.Frank Furedi is a sociologist and social commentator. He is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Kent in Canterbury. Since the late 1990s, Frank has been widely cited about his views on why Western societies find it so difficult to engage with risk and uncertainty. He has published widely about controversies relating to issues such as health, parenting children, food and new technology. His book Invitation To Terror; Expanding the Empire of the Unknown (2007) explores the way in which the threat of terrorism has become amplified through the ascendancy of precautionary thinking. It develops the arguments contained in two previous books, Culture of Fear (2002) and Paranoid Parenting (2001). Both of these works investigate the interaction between risk consciousness and perceptions of fear, trust relations and social capital in contemporary society.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. The Burning Forest: India's War Against the Maoists (Verso, 2019) by Nandini Sundar is an empathetic, moving account of what drives indigenous peasants to support armed struggle despite severe state repression, including lives lost, homes and communities destroyed. Over the past decade, the heavily forested,mineral-rich region of Bastar in central India has emerged as one of the most militarized sites in the country. The government calls the Maoist insurgency the “biggest security threat” to India. In 2005, a state-sponsored vigilante movement, the Salwa Judum, burnt hundreds of villages, driving their inhabitants into state-controlled camps, drawing on counterinsurgency techniques developed in Malaysia, Vietnam and elsewhere. Apart from rapes and killings, hundreds of ‘surrendered' Maoist sympathisers were conscripted as auxiliaries. The conflict continues to this day, taking a toll on the lives of civilians, security forces and Maoist cadres. In 2007, Sundar and others took the Indian government to the Supreme Court over the human rights violations arising out ofthe conflict. In a landmark judgment, the Court in 2011 banned state supportfor vigilantism. The Burning Forest describes this brutal war in the heart of India, and what it tells us about the courts, media and politics of the country. The result is a granular and critical ethnography of Indian democracy over a decade. Nandini Sundar is a Professor of Sociology at the Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University, and has been visiting Bastar for over 25 years. Her first book, Subalterns and Sovereigns: An Anthropological History of Bastar (1854-1996) is an authoritative account of Bastar's colonial and post-colonial past. St. Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582) was a sixteenth-century Spanish nun and one of the most influential mystics in all of Church history, writing two spiritual classics still read today: The Way of Perfection and The Interior Castle. Her autobiography (more accurately, a confession to Spanish Inquisitors) is The Life of St. Teresa of Avila, detailing her spiritual experiences of the love of God.In this episode, Evan Rosa welcomes Carlos Eire (T. Lawrason Riggs Professor of History and Religious Studies at Yale University) for a discussion of how to read St. Teresa of Ávila, exploring the historical, cultural, philosophical, and theological aspects of her life and writing, and offering insights and close readings of several selections from her classic confession-slash-autobiography, known as La Vida, or The Life.About Carlos EireCarlos Eire is T. Lawrason Riggs Professor of History and Religious Studies at Yale University. All of his books are banned in Cuba, where he has been proclaimed an enemy of the state. He was awarded the 2024 Harwood F. Byrnes/Richard B. Sewall Teaching Prize by Yale College, received his PhD from Yale in 1979. He specializes in the social, intellectual, religious, and cultural history of late medieval and early modern Europe, with a focus on both the Protestant and Catholic Reformations; the history of popular piety; the history of the supernatural, and the history of death. Before joining the Yale faculty in 1996, he taught at St. John's University in Minnesota and the University of Virginia, and was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He is the author of War Against the Idols (1986); From Madrid to Purgatory (1995); A Very Brief History of Eternity (2010); Reformations: The Early Modern World (2016); The Life of Saint Teresa of Ávila: A Biography (2019); and They Flew: A History of the Impossible (2023). He is also co-author of Jews, Christians, Muslims: An Introduction to Monotheistic Religions (1997); and ventured into the twentieth century and the Cuban Revolution in the memoir Waiting for Snow in Havana (2003), which won the National Book Award in Nonfiction in the United States and has been translated into more than a dozen languages. His second memoir, Learning to Die in Miami (2010), explores the exile experience. A past president of the Society for Reformation Research, he is currently researching various topics in the history of the supernatural. His book Reformations won the R.R. WYNK: There's a soft underbelly to the Kamala Harris boom - I have been saying this since she became the nominee. She was propped up by the media, but now that the excitement has died down, we can see that she does not have very much going for her. Now, with RFK endorsing Trump, many ethnic Catholic Americans are switching over to Trump. The teamsters are now in favor of Trump, and the democrats are worried. Kamala Harris has nothing in common with the everyday working American. The fact that the teamsters made public that 60% of them support Trump tells you everything you need to know. The Amish, college fraternities, and black males are moving to Trump, registering to vote and getting ready to put Trump in office. Kamala Dukakis is tanking. John Schlafly, co-author of the weekly Schlafly Report, joins Ed to give a preview of this week's column about how Bide and Harris are using Zelensky as a campaign prop. After Dick Cheney's endorsement of VP Harris, it is clear that she is the warmonger candidate. Tim Hale, January 6 patriot and representative for the Patriot Freedom Project, joins Ed to discuss how the felony charge against him is likely to be dropped. After SCOTUS ruled that the 1512 charge was being used improperly in the felony charges against J6 defendants. Hale reflects on the lawfare attacks against him and other January 6 protestors, and what can change going forward. Col. John Mills (Ret.), author of War Against the Deep State and The Nation Will Follow, joins Ed to discuss the election. Peter wrote Peter York's Eighties (1996), this time co-authored with Charles Jennings, which was both a book and a BBC television series. This was followed by Dictators' Homes (2005), which explored the interior design favoured by dictators as a reflection of their despotic characters. Recently Peter wrote the book, The War Against the BBC, about how an Unprecedented Combination of Hostile Forces Is Destroying Britain's Greatest Cultural Institution... And Why People Should Care. He's also presented a sixty-minute live show, How to Become a Nicer Type of Person, on stage in Edinburgh and London and Peter York's Hipster Handbook on BBC Four. The timers were set for 5:00 AM and nothing could thwart their plans. Or could there?    What happened next showed the greatest offensive move by Israel against Hezbollah since they attacked Israel on October 8th, totally blowing Hezbollah's plan out of the water.    The only casualties from the now-foiled attack by Hezbollah were a couple of chickens. I just wrapped up a great conversation with author and public intellectual Frank Furedi, who is ever-interesting. Frank has a new book, The War Against the Past, which I haven't read yet but is on my must-read list. Given Frank's heterodox and thoughtful writings, I've put this on my “Must Read” list. Frank and I frequently cross paths at conferences, and I always find his commentary insightful and clear. Although we strongly disagree on some issues, I've always found Frank open to conversation, dialogue, and even friendly debate. We discussed the politicization of identity and his concept of "decivilization," which he explains in detail. I also asked him about his shift from the far left to his now conservative views. We touched on species relativism (versus cultural, moral, or epistemological relativism), as well as the impact of politicization on public discourse and his work with MCC's  think tank in Brussels. I'm looking forward to speaking with Frank at Genspect in Portugal and seeing him again in Hungary and possibly Romania. I hope you enjoy our episode. Thanks!
