This week's episode is sponsored לעילוי נשמת אריה מרדכי בן אברהם יצחק In this episode we take a deeper look at how the ideals of Torah learning mentioned in Maalos HaTorah played a significant part in creating the original Ashkenazi Jewish Community in Israel. We also take a deeper look at how to properly understand the concept of Historical Inertia. Similarly we look at how the Maalos HaTorah discussed, ‘bitul Torah'. We also discuss the challenge of implementing this practically in Yeshivas and in life. In this short shiur, based on a Torah from the Shvilei Pinchas, Rav Burg explains the inner connection between Yaakov Avinu and the Beis HaMikdash. Through our Torah and Teffilah, we turn our Shuls and Yeshivas into the building blocks of the third Beis HaMikdash.

Meet Itel Landau (maiden family name: Brettler), a Holocaust survivor originally from Vișeu de Sus (Felsővisó in Hungarian, אויבערווישעווע in Yiddish), a shtetl in Transylvania (prewar Romania, Hungary during WWII, now Romania), discussing her life — before, during, and after the Holocaust. Itel was born into a Hassidic family, the Brettlers, who sold manufacturing materials. In 1940, Transylvania was taken over by Hungary. Among other changes, her school days were ended. In the spring of 1944, the Germans occupied Hungary, and soon after she and her family were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. She, her mother, and two sisters were among the few survivors from her large extended family. After the war, she endured years of recovery from Tuberculosis in a sanitarium in France. She eventually married and moved to Bogota, Colombia, where she raised her family. After her children began to attend Yeshivas in New York, she and her family relocated there. She now lives in Manhattan. For more information, see also Itel's 1988 interview with the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. Thanks to Reb Yisrael Brettler, coproducer of this episode, who is also Itel's first cousin once removed. Last week an appellate hearing took place, in the fight to prevent the state from imposing tough restrictions on Yeshivas. In this fascinating interview, renowned attorney Avi Schick breaks down last week's hearing, and the latest effort by the state to strike down the Supreme court ruling which favored yeshivas. He discusses the 'disingenuous' claims made the state lawyers, who say that the state is not trying to close down or de-fund yeshivas. He points out that the state was doing contortions to avoid the suggestion that they may close yeshivas, because they fear its a toxic death blow to their case. He also discussed some of the amazing quesions by the Apellate Judges themselves.
Shiur given by Rabbi Bezalel Rudinsky in Yeshivas Toras Chaim in Eretz Yisroel.
In this shiur, delivered in Sharfmans, Rav Burg explores (based on a piece from Rav Moshe Weinberger) how Yiras Shomayim is the outer sanctum and Torah is the inner sanctum. One must enter the outer sanctum first, where we feel the pain of exile, before we enter the inner sanctum, the joy of Torah. Although the Beis HaMikdash has been destroyed we still have our Mikdash Mi'at, our Shuls and Yeshivas where we can access the joy of he inner sanctum.
Discover the profound impact of prayer in shaping our lives and our relationship with the divine from this soul-stirring conversation. Prayer transcends simple acts and offerings, we explain, as it fosters an intimate bond with Hashem that eclipses even the most benevolent deeds. We delve into the rituals that enrich our daily lives, such as the profoundly symbolic act of washing hands before breaking bread, a gesture that acknowledges our reliance on God's grace. Listen closely and uncover how these moments of humility and trust are the true core of prayer, more significant than any physical offering we could present. In our heartfelt dialogue, we share touching tales of children in Yeshivas who pray for our IDF soldiers during this war, underscoring the miraculous nature of collective prayer. The power of words spoken with genuine hope and faith can yield astounding outcomes; this is evident in the way their prayers coincided with unexpected low casualty statistics. Furthermore, we touch upon the daily practice of reciting the Ashrei prayer (Psalm 145), a thrice-daily ritual that serves to remind us of our roles as grateful recipients of God's endless generosity. The diastrous effects of WW 1 on religiosity, and the efforts to respond to the crisis in Warsaw
It may sound radical. But could it be the miracle solution? Several weeks ago, a group of Roshei Yeshiva traveled to Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch shlita, to ask him if they should restructure the yeshiva system. According to reports, the proposal includes eliminating a year of yeshiva in America, and adding a year of High School for girls. This would close the age gap. In this episode, Yaakov explains this concept, and what the potential pitfalls are. PLUS: Clips of Rav Yitzchak Reichman from NASI discussing the issue

Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin was the grand vision of its founder Rav Meir Shapiro. Following a long fundraising campaign, it opened in a grand ceremony in 1930. Rav Meir Shapiro set the goal of the yeshiva with its very name Chachmei Lublin. This was to restore the crown of glory to the city of Lublin, which had been a Torah center for centuries. The Torah legacy would be continued by creating a grandiose edifice which would be an honor for Torah and those who study it, and would contain a Bais Medrash, dormitory facilities, kitchen, dining room, an impressive library, a mikvah and even a model of the Bais Hamikdash. Though Rav Meir Shapiro tragically passed away at the age of 46 in 1933, Chachmei Lublin continued to flourish under the able leadership of Rav Aryeh Tzvi Frommer, the Kozhligover Rav. Though most of the yeshiva students and faculty ultimately were killed during the Holocaust, the legacy of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin remains until this very day. On September 11, 2022, the New York Times published a leading story about the hasidic schools of greater New York. The article, “In Hasidic Enclaves, Failing Private Schools Flush with Public Money,” purported to show that, though New York's hasidic Jewish religious schools have benefited from $1 billion in government funding in the last four years, they provide extremely poor secular education, deploy corporal punishment in class, abuse the political process, and are unaccountable to outside oversight. The article inspired outrage from a variety of parties; rarely has the public—and especially the Jewish public—been so animated by the educational performance of New York's yeshivas. Beyond the article, deeper questions come to the surface. What obligations do religious communities have to the state? What obligations does a state, one that's constituted to protect religious liberty and individual rights, owe to families and their decisions? And why, as the authors of this feature do not ask, do so many families choose these schools for their children in the first place? To help us think about these important questions in the context of the NYT story, our guest on this week's podcast is the Mosaic columnist and hasidic educator Eli Spitzer, who wrote an essay about this very issue for Mosaic back in October 2021 called “NY State vs. the Yeshivas.” In conversation with Mosaic editor Jonathan Silver, he explains what hasidic schools are really like, how those communities think about education and the secular world, and the important issues that the Times article fails to address. This discussion was recorded online in front of Mosaic subscribers.
