Episode 129 – The Star Wars Influence: Live at the BFI's Film on Film Festival In this special live episode, I join Doug Weir—Remastering Lead at the BFI—and post-production veteran Paul Collard on stage for a panel titled The Star Wars Influence, recorded at the BFI's Film on Film Festival. From the creation of ILM to the invention of motion control, EditDroid, SoundDroid, and digital cinema tools, we look at how Lucas empowered a generation of problem-solvers and helped pioneer the digital workflow we now take for granted. Link to video version of this interview: https://youtu.be/IRTvj1_4_14In this interview, Naftuli Moster reflects on his years as the face of a controversial campaign to reform secular education in Hasidic boys' yeshivas. As the founder of YAFFED (Young Advocates for Fair Education), Moster positioned himself as a critic of the yeshiva system in which he was raised, arguing that Hasidic schools fail to meet basic educational standards required by state law.Over the years, he became a polarizing figure — praised by some for challenging religious insularity, and criticized by others as antagonistic to the community he came from. To many within the Hasidic world, he came to represent an external pressure campaign that misunderstood or misrepresented their values and way of life. In 2022, Moster resigned from YAFFED, and in this candid conversation, he speaks openly about why he chose to step away. Was it burnout, a shift in priorities, or something deeper about the limits of advocacy? We explore his personal journey, how he views his impact now, and what he's turned to since leaving the public spotlight.

What if the way we care for new mothers is all wrong? Not just lacking. Not just outdated. But built on a model that misses the heart and soul of what postpartum truly is — and what it could be.When I was a home birth midwife, postpartum care was the care. I'd visit mamas and babies at home five or six times in the first few weeks. We'd talk about everything — from latch to lochia, sleep deprivation to soul shifts. It wasn't "extra." It was essential. It's part of why I went into medicine, because as a midwife I saw too often, how in this precious, vulnerable, formative window for mothers and babies - care just disappeared for the mother after the baby was born. A first visit may have been 6 or 8 weeks after the birth, by which time mothers were struggling alone with overwhelm, breastfeeding challenges, or worse, anxiety, depression, isolation, and sometimes they'd given up breastfeeding because they had no support. And when they did get care, all too often they had to sit in waiting rooms, a baby and toddler often in tow, waiting for an appointment only to get 15 minutes with a doctor whose had no idea to support mothers postpartum. This week on On Health, I'm joined by my long-time colleague and kindred spirit Dr. Eva Zasloff — a fellow family physician, artist, mother, and fellow revolutionary in postpartum care — to talk about the radical simplicity and profound necessity of caring for mothers in their homes, in their own rhythm, and on their own terms. Inside the Episode We Talk About:The surprising (and heartbreaking) truth about conventional postpartum visitsWhy 20-minute clinic appointments can do more harm than goodEva's bold leap from family doctor to founder of Tova Health — a home-based, whole-person care model serving over 600 familiesThe “twilight zone” of early motherhood — and how we can hold space for itWhat home visits offer that clinic visits never canWhy postpartum depression and anxiety are often symptoms of a broken systemThe healing power of birth stories, coconut oil massages, and Zoom mama circles that make a differenceWhat Eva is doing with Tova Health, and what I'm doing with The Mama Pathway, are not just beautiful experiences for mothers— they're necessary for maternal health. It's a return to wisdom we've always known. And it's a model I dream of seeing in communities everywhere. If you're a doula, a midwife, a family doc, or a mama (or someone who loves one), this episode will touch you deeply — and perhaps inspire you to bring this care into your own community or at least raise your awareness about the importance of listening to, being with, and supporting new mothers. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping – Propaganda, Complicity, and Haymitch's StoryIn this episode of Superhero Ethics, hosts Matthew and Riki welcome special guest Danielle from WrittenInTheStarWars to dive deep into Suzanne Collins' newest novel in The Hunger Games franchise, Sunrise on the Reaping. The trio explores how this prequel reveals the true story behind Haymitch Abernathy's Games and challenges what readers thought they knew from the original trilogy. What makes Suzanne Collins' writing unique in YA literature? The hosts discuss Collins' masterful use of first-person narrative, with Danielle highlighting how Collins understands both the strengths and weaknesses of this perspective. Her intentional structuring of chapters and story arcs keeps readers engaged while delivering complex themes accessible to young adults without oversimplifying them. The conversation explores Collins' famous quote: “I don't write about adolescents. I write about war for adolescents.”How does propaganda shape the story in Panem?Sunrise on the Reaping reveals how the Capitol manipulates narratives, showing that what Katniss learned about Haymitch's Games was heavily edited propaganda. The book explores how different forms of propaganda work—from entertainment spectacles to subtle messaging that convinces citizens the Games are necessary for peace. Characters like Effie Trinket demonstrate how effective this indoctrination can be, while others show resistance to these manufactured stories. What do we learn about Haymitch as a character? The novel provides a stark contrast between the real Haymitch and the persona crafted by Capitol editors. Readers discover he was someone who refused to think of other tributes as enemies, consistently protected others, and maintained his humanity throughout the Games. The book also reveals his tragic journey toward alcoholism, showing how it began as medical treatment before becoming his coping mechanism for trauma and loss.Other topics discussed:How Maysilee Donner evolves from a "mean girl" to one of the book's most compelling charactersWhy Collins may have written this book now as a response to current political eventsThe difference between how Haymitch's relationship with Maysilee was portrayed in propaganda versus realityThe careful way Collins handles familiar characters from the original trilogy appearing in the prequelThe humanity of Career tributes and how they too are victims of the Capitol's systemThe theme of complicity and how everyone in Panem's system becomes part of maintaining its horrorsThe conversation concludes by reflecting on how Collins uses her storytelling to encourage readers to question propaganda in their own lives and recognize complicity in unjust systems. By revisiting Haymitch's Games, she reminds us that history is often written by the victors—but truth can be a powerful tool for rebellion.LinksFollow these links to earlier discussions on The Hunger Games with Danielle:The Hunger GamesThe Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Episode Title: "Live life to the fullest, excel despite challenges, and never let those who wish you harm dictate your path."Season 3, Episode 43In this raw and transformative episode of Resilient Voices & Beyond Podcast, host Michael D. Davis-Thomas is joined by Maegan “Mae” Mason, a resilient advocate, mentor, and lived experience expert who shares her powerful story of survival, self-discovery, and growth.Mae opens up about her early life—navigating a turbulent home environment that led her into the juvenile justice system by the age of 13. Through 12 years of personal turmoil, system involvement, and institutionalization, she encountered abuse, neglect, and the emotional weight of being misunderstood. Her story reflects the harsh realities many youth face when systems fail to meet their needs with compassion and care. But Mae didn't let that become her final chapter. She speaks openly about the turning points in her journey—missing key family moments while incarcerated, the comfort of institutionalization, and how writing, therapy, and mentorship helped her begin healing. Mae found her voice through poetry and began giving back, mentoring girls in similar situations, and building genuine relationships with youth at her job site.In this episode, Michael and Mae discuss:The emotional impact of growing up in the systemThe importance of having even just one supportive adultThe healing power of writing, poetry, and creative expressionHow mentorship and lived experience shape better youth servicesReintegration challenges after incarceration and aging outThe urgency of community-based alternatives to institutional settingsSelf-care and coping strategies for those working within youth-serving systemsMae's message is one of radical truth, vulnerability, and empowerment. Her story reminds us that no matter how deep the wounds, growth is always possible—and that no one's past should define their future. Mae is living proof that you can excel despite challenges, heal through expression, and build purpose from pain.

I'm going on tour! Come see The School of Greatness LIVE in person!Get my new book Make Money Easy here! Most of us unknowingly live under what family therapy expert Jerry Wise calls "the family trance" – a powerful force that shapes our identity without our awareness. After 45 years helping thousands break free from dysfunctional family patterns, Jerry reveals how our adult struggles often stem from inherited emotional programming that creates a "malignant normalcy" within us. Through our conversation, he shares the revolutionary concept of self-differentiation – the courageous process of separating your true self from your family's expectations while remaining emotionally connected. When Jerry states "whatever issues I leave unresolved, who gets to resolve them? My children," I realized this might be the most transformative conversation we've had about breaking generational patterns. His profound insight that "it's never too late to have a happy childhood" offers hope to anyone trapped in cycles of criticism, people-pleasing, or emotional reactivity that originated in their family system.Get Jerry's Free 84-Minute 'Self-Differentiation' TrainingGet more from Jerry on YouTubeIn this episode you will learn:Why criticizing yourself harshly is often your "family self" talking, not your authentic voiceHow to identify if you had narcissistic parents and what that means for your adult relationshipsThe three levels of resistance you'll face when changing family dynamics and how to overcome themWhy trying to change your parents is futile, but changing yourself transforms the entire systemThe difference between setting outer boundaries and the crucial inner boundaries needed for healingHow the "fantasy" of finally getting parental approval keeps many adults emotionally stuckWhy it's never too late to have a happy childhood through self-parenting and inner child workThe three core elements needed for lasting change: self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-differentiationFor more information go to https://www.lewishowes.com/1747For more Greatness text PODCAST to +1 (614) 350-3960More SOG episodes we think you'll love:Gabby Bernstein – greatness.lnk.to/1714SCJason Wilson – greatness.lnk.to/1725SCMel Robbins – greatness.lnk.to/1710SC Get more from Lewis!
