Send us a textHow do you keep your culture alive, when you've had to flee and create a whole new life in a country you never chose yourself? Sarah Baharaki was born in Badakhshan Province and raised in Kabul, Afghanistan. But rather suddenly, the year she graduated from high school, the situation in her country took a radical turn. In just a few days after the fall of the capital city of Kabul, Sarah, just a teenager at the time, had to flee her home country with her family and has never been able to return home since. In this conversation, Sarah walks us through being uprooted from her home country, landing in the UK, the culture shock she had to overcome, and how she balances her new culture with her home culture. When we speak of the differences in languages we also go into the topic of humor and ‘how to be funny in a foreign language'.From a world away, she watched as her friends and classmates back home became stripped of basic human rights. Driven by a deep conviction, Sarah is a huge advocate for The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4 which advocates for Quality Education, and SDG 5 which advocates for Gender Equality. Today Sarah takes charge of the topics dear to her heart. She has carved a path out for herself and is currently a Global Youth Ambassador for Their World, and a UK Youth Delegate to the UN Women in the UK. With a focus on Afghan women, she was also the Opening Keynote speaker at ECOSOC2024 at the UN Head Quarters in New York. Episode mentions: Afghanistan is not what traditional media portrays. Yes, security risks exist, but there is more to the country than just the Taliban's unsettling presence. Amidst all the doom and gloom of the current zeitgeist, Harvard University literature professor & DLD 2025 speaker Martin Puchner remains cautiously optimistic about our high tech future. Reflecting on cultural and technological changes over the past 20 years. Puchner explains how digital technology has transformed academic research and teaching since 2005, noting how the internet has made obscure texts more accessible and changed how scholars work. While acknowledging concerns about declining humanities enrollment and student reading habits, Puchner maintains a cautiously optimistic outlook. He observes that while fewer top students choose to study literature, there's been a growth in public engagement with humanities through book clubs, podcasts, and adult education. Puchner offers nuanced perspectives on several contemporary issues, including the rise of student anxiety (which he attributes more to psycho-pharmaceuticals than technology), the paradox of people valuing reading while actually reading less, and the role of AI in education. He suggests that AI's ability to summarize texts might complement rather than replace deep reading, particularly for fiction where the reading experience itself is central. Looking ahead to 2045, Puchner is particularly optimistic about education's future, believing that interactive online platforms and AI could help democratize high-quality education globally. However, he maintains that human teachers will remain essential due to the affective, interpersonal nature of education—something demonstrated during COVID-19 when in-person interaction was lost. He sees technology as augmenting rather than replacing traditional educational experiences, much as print didn't eliminate lectures and film didn't replace theater.Martin Puchner, the Byron and Anita Wien Professor at Harvard University, is a prize-winning author, educator, public speaker, and institution builder in the arts and humanities. His writings range from philosophy and theater to culture and technology and have been translated into many languages. Through his best-selling Norton Anthology of World Literature and his HarvardX MOOC Masterpieces of World Literature, he has brought four thousand years of literature to audiences across the globe. His book, The Written World, which tells the story of literature from the invention of writing to the Internet, has been widely reviewed in The New York Times, The Times (London), the Financial Times, The Times Literary Supplement, The Atlantic, The Economist, among others, covered on radio and television, and has been translated into over twenty languages. It appeared on the Wall Street Journal bestseller list and received the Massachusetts Book Award. His book The Language of Thieves has been praised as an unusual combination of scholarship and memoir, and the writing, compared to Stevenson's Treasure Island and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. An adventurous foray into the philosophy of language, it is also a reckoning with Germany's past. His book Literature for a Changing Planet is based on the inaugural Oxford University Lectures in European History, delivered in November 2019, has been reviewed in the Financial Times, The New York Review of Books and other venues. It calls for a new approach to storytelling and climate change. His most recent book, Culture: The Story of Us, tells a global history of culture that raises fundamental questions about how culture works, and how different cultures should relate to one another. In hundreds of lectures and workshops from the Arctic Circle to Brazil and from the Middle East to China, he has advocated for the arts and humanities in a changing world. At Harvard, he has instituted these ideas in a new program in theater, dance and media as well as in the Mellon School of Theater and Performance Research, which lasted from 2010-2022. Among his prizes are a Guggenheim Fellowship, fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin and at the Cullman Center at the New York Public Library, the Berlin Prize, and the 2021 Humboldt Prize. He is a permanent member of the European Academy.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Choosing right quality education for your child by Radio Islam
The Irish Girl Guides (IGG), in collaboration with Engineers Ireland, is excited to announce the launch of the Engineers Ireland STEPS Ladybird Engineering Badge. This new Badge builds on the success of the Engineering Badges for Brownies (ages 7-10) and Guides (ages 10-14), extending the opportunity to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities to girls aged 5-7. With the Ladybird Engineering Badge, Irish Girl Guides and Engineers Ireland aim to inspire young girls to explore STEM and consider engineering careers. The badge introduces fun, hands-on challenges that foster creativity, curiosity, and teamwork while building problem-solving abilities and an engineering mindset. By engaging in this initiative, girls are empowered to see themselves as future innovators in a traditionally male-dominated sector. This partnership aligns seamlessly with IGG's Journey Programme and mission to enable girls and young women to reach their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world. The initiative also supports several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 5 Gender Equality, SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities, SDG 1 No Poverty, and SDG 4 Quality Education. It envisions a future where young girls can contribute to sustainable engineering practices that address global challenges. Since the launch of the Engineering Badges in 2018, more than 3,500 Brownies and Guides have earned their Badges, highlighting the success of this initiative. By introducing the Badge to Ladybirds, IGG and Engineers Ireland aim to inspire girls from an early age, empowering them to believe in their abilities and pursue their ambitions, promising a bright future ahead. "At the moment less than a quarter of both engineers and engineering students in Ireland are female. It is clear that more must be done to encourage girls and young women to take up roles in this fascinating industry, particularly if Ireland is to develop the kind of large and diverse engineering profession needed to meet tomorrow's challenges," said Damien Owens, the Director General of Engineers Ireland. "Through our collaboration with the Irish Girl Guides, a community-focused organisation with which we share many values, we are delighted to have the opportunity to promote engineering to young girls, opening up greater opportunities for their future," said Owens. Róisín Mills, the Programme and Training Commissioner, said, "Our mission at IGG is to develop girls into global citizens. Through our partnership with the Engineers Ireland STEPS programme, we have delivered high-quality STEM education to our youth members, broadening both their knowledge and understanding of engineering, as well as their prospects in STEM fields. The Ladybird Engineering Badge is a great way for our youngest members, the Ladybirds, to be exposed to engineering topics in a fun and engaging way." The Engineers Ireland STEPS Programme unlocks the potential of engineering for school children eager to make a meaningful impact in the world. The award is one of four primary and post-primary student engineering initiatives coordinated by the STEPS programme, which is funded by the Department of Education, Arup, the EPA, ESB, Intel, and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). Irish Girl Guides has 10,000 members across Ireland. Guiding started in Ireland in 1911 and operates throughout the 26 counties with 1,600 volunteer Leaders providing an informal educational programme of fun and challenging activities that foster confidence and leadership skills in girls and young women, enabling them to develop to their full potential and to become responsible citizens.

David's 3 mindset messages: We are spiritual beings having a human experience As Viktor Frankl said, between stimulus and response there is a space and time in which we are free to choose our response Our mindset and our thoughts create the world that we experience. Food David wanted to be surprised. He said: "Surprise me! I love food and eat anything but liver." It is not the first time that my guest wanted to be surprised and usually that poses a bigger challenge because there are a plethora of choices. To narrow down I tune in to my intuition and follow it's lead when making a choice. So, I was browsing for various recipes, and I came up to lamb kotlet. It felt right! I really wanted to eat that dish myself and I imagined it would taste fresh, flavoursome, and be full of nutritional goodness. I decided to serve these kotlets with pitta bread, red cabbage slaw made with vinegar and fresh herbs alongside Japanese picked tomatoes that I shared in Episode 1. This particular recipe of kotlets is Persian, but I often change my recipes to add more colours or flavours. So I merged Persian & Moroccan recipes, by adding mint and coriander to the lamb. In this episode of Education Matters with MySchoolOptions, host Cesar Roman is joined by two leading voices in the education policy arena: Betsy Wiley, President and CEO of the Institute for Quality Education, and Robert Enlow, President and CEO of Ed Choice. Together, they dive into the recent media debate surrounding the Indiana voucher program and school choice efforts across the country. The conversation highlights the evolution of school choice in Indiana, particularly through the voucher system, and its role in expanding educational opportunities for families. Betsy and Robert break down the common misconceptions about school vouchers and explain how these programs empower parents, particularly in underserved communities. They also discuss the future of school choice, the importance of charter schools and private schools, and the critical need for educational freedom. Takeaways School choice is rapidly growing, reshaping the landscape of education policy in the U.S. The Indiana voucher program, launched in 2011, has seen significant progress, offering more students access to diverse educational options. Vouchers allow funding to follow the student rather than being tied to the institution. Charter schools and private schools play a vital role in the school choice ecosystem, increasing diversity and innovation in education. Misconceptions about school vouchers often stem from misunderstanding how the system works and its benefits for families. The future of school choice in Indiana could see a move toward universal eligibility, providing every family the opportunity to choose the best education for their child. Milton Friedman's ideas on education continue to influence school choice advocates, pushing for innovation and entrepreneurship in education. Did you find this episode informative? Help us out!
