Since its inception, beauty in America has been defined by culture. Due to many factors, including our views on race, the black woman has rarely been seen as beautiful. Of course, there are exceptions, however consciously and subconsciously American culture has communicated to the black woman that she is not beautiful and in order for her to be more beautiful she needs to exhibit more features associated with a white woman. If the black woman has not been told she is ugly, she has been highlighted for being "sexy" or "exotic". She has often been relegated to a sexual object with exaggerated features that communicates positivity not in elegance or class, but in lust or curiosity. The problems with this generational cultural communication is strong and deep. It needs to stop and it needs to stop now. Priscilla Black was born in Memphis, Tennessee but moved several times during her childhood to places like Detroit, Michigan, Houston, Texas and Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Serena Williams, Lebron James, Muhammed Ali, Mike Tyson...aren't these people proof that America is truly the land of equal opportunity? When we see the financial success, love and admiration for black athletes, isn't that proof that we are past the horrors of our racist past? Simply stated, the answer to these questions is: no. Anthony Tolliver helps us see that success in professional sports is not the full picture of the opportunities and treatment of minorities in the United States. Anthony Tolliver played basketball at Creighton University before going to a professional basketball career that has taken him from the NBA D-League (now called G-League), to Germany, to the NBA. As much as we may not want to admit it, one of the areas of society that bias is still glaring is in our education system. Minority schools do not have the same resources, minority children do not have the same representation and minority children do not get the same benefit of the doubt in the American education system. These disparities have real and long lasting effects. Individuals, communities and our nation will be impacted for years to come by the education that our children are receiving. Timothy Revels shares his experiences as a black boy, a black man, a black school teacher and his studies in history as well as in the education field. Timothy shares from his personal experiences as well as his advanced level education. Sunday morning at 11:00am is still the most segregated hour in America. Churches across America are perpetuating many of the racial problems in the United States. We gather together, worship together, "do life" together and eventually become each other's best friends. Because of the segregation within churches, this can create communities of people who only have meaningful conversations with people who look the same, believe the same, think the same, vote the same and have similar experiences. The segregation within the church knowingly or unknowingly continues biases, stereotypes and discriminations outside of the church. Small Pox swept through Boston, Massachusetts in the year 1721 wiping out 14% of Bostonians. It all could have and should have been avoided. Why wasn't it avoided? White Puritans decided they would rather die than enact an idea from Cotton Mather or his slave, Onesismus. This is not a problem that is simply relegated to the past. There are many today who are unwilling to listen to the "other", even to their own detriment. This podcast is birthed out of John chapter 17, verse 21 when Jesus prays that we would be one, just as He and the Father are one so that the whole world may believe. 17:21 is podcast all about shining a light on the path to authentic unity.
