Emily Bear captivated the world with her piano talent at just six years old. Now, at 23, she's already a Grammy and Emmy-winning composer, producer, arranger, pianist, and singer-songwriter. Recently, she became the youngest person to score a feature film and is currently working on Moana 2. In 2022, Emily won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical, which she co-wrote with Abigail Barlow live on social media. The album soared to #1 on the U.S. iTunes pop charts within 1.5 hours of its release and reached the top 5 albums worldwide. This year, she toured as the pianist for Beyoncé's Renaissance tour. Today, Emily shares: The surprising moment her talent was discovered—and why she shies away from the “child prodigy” label. Leaving home at 16 to chase her dreams in LA: the challenges, the courage, and the adventure. How a life-changing meeting led to Quincy Jones becoming her mentor. The journey to becoming Beyoncé's pianist on the Renaissance Tour—and the one terrifying moment she'll never forget. An unexpected lesson from Beyoncé that reshaped her approach to music and performance. The story behind The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical, and why winning a Grammy was the last thing she expected. The struggle to be taken seriously as a young musician—and why that respect mattered to her. Why she aims to move people to tears with her music. Creating her own path when gigs weren't coming—and her advice for others who want to do the same. Breaking barriers as a woman composer—and why she proudly performs with colorful nail polish and heels! Book Rec: Outliers by Malcom Gladwell

On this week's show, Julia and Stephen are joined by Slate writer and senior editor, Sam Adams. Why do we tell fictional stories about real people? The panel ponders this question as they discuss two biopics: The Apprentice and Saturday Night. The Apprentice is an uncanny portrait of Donald Trump, a young striver under the tutelage – and spell – of his mentor, Roy Cohn. But does the film offer any new information or ideas? Saturday Night, on the other hand, is the often obnoxious tale of the frenetic 90-minute countdown before Saturday Night Live's first broadcast in 1975. Finally, the panel is joined by The Atlantic staff writer Charlie Warzel to discuss his recent and prescient piece, “I'm Running Out of Ways to Explain How Bad This Is.” In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses f*cking profanity, a conversation inspired by a listener question from Jonathan. On today's episode we have Garry Ingraham with us to talk about sexual dysfunction and freedom!Note: Jeff made a comment about getting divorced and remarrying as being unbiblical. We wanted to make sure we're clear that getting divorced and remarried is not unbiblical for everyone, but Jesus does address distinctions in Matthew 19:7-9, Luke 16:18. The problem that has arisen is that we take hard stances (Biblically) to issues like homosexuality (as we should) and neglect other passages that call Christians into conviction because they have been accommodated by the culture. Note: Jeff also talked about Malcom Gladwell's book “Outliers” and said that the community came from Ireland, when in fact it was Italy.
Rick Howard, N2K CyberWire's Chief Analyst and Senior Fellow, discusses the idea that Cybersecurity is radically asymmetrically distributed. Why are some people so much better than everyone else in a given field? What makes a Usain Bolt or Steve Jobs so successful? Is it nature or nurture? Outliers by Malcom Gladwell seeks to answer these question. An Outlier is an anomoly. Most people think of the average as the mean. But most science (at least social science) tracks the mid point. Otherwise the data will be skewed by Outliers. That is, those that fall so far behind, or ahead that they skew the mean. Gladwell focused on those people who achieved outlandish success. Like Bill Gates, The Beatles and Robert Oppenheimer. To try to understand the ingredients of success. Our book club chose it as our first book to read and review. #Episode 217: The Balance of Learning & Taking Action Creates Massive Growth Have you ever felt like you have the knowledge but you're not receiving the results you desire? Most of us leave the public school systems thinking that knowing a subject is memorizing it. You scored an A on your assignment, so you're smart and have mastered the subject. The real question we must ponder if we want to achieve results is “Where have I APPLIED the information in the last year?” “Have I applied the information enough to embody it, and it becomes second nature?” If you want to run events, give readings, coaching sessions, and impact people, it's not enough to learn about it in workshops or books. We all know this. But are you applying this into your business and life? Can you apply it even more so? If you want to be a public speaker. How many speeches have you given? If you want to give readings or platform mediumship, how many have you done in the past 3 months? Malcom Gladwell studied experts in all industries and realized it takes roughly 10 years or 10,000 hours of real life practice to become an “expert” in a specific areas. Are you putting in the time to master what soul is calling you to do? #TheLindsayAndTonyPodcast Lindsay Marino To contact Tony Mitchell go to: www.TonyCMitchell.com To contact Lindsay Marino go to: www.LindsayMarino.com

Here's the thing about plane crashes: We all die at the same time. Inefficient and ambiguous communication has serious tactical implications when managing a crisis as a team. Sometimes, we water down what we need to say because we don't want to step on toes or piss anyone off, especially when talking to authority figures. This is called mitigated speech, and it is something leaders and team members need to be aware of when it comes to problem solving and decision making in groups. You have probably heard of the 10,000 hour rule which was highlighted in Malcom Gladwell's bestseller Outliers. Gladwell's theory is that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to achieve mastery in any complex skill. Being an articulate and prepared lawyer and small business entrepreneur are extremely complex skills, and in order to become a master you have to put in the hours. On today's episode, Timothy Pavone highlights how he has systematically built his practice from his first client to where he is today. Tim's story is a shining example of the fact that in building a business there is no such thing as an overnight success, but rather that great businesses are built on attention to details over the long haul. Highlights: · Listen to Tim talk about creating an office culture where every phone call is answered. · Discover why Tim believes you should try to win every argument, even a motion to continue, in front of your judge. · Hear Tim explain why the Rules of Evidence are undervalued by lawyers in district court practice. · Discover the roadblocks and keys to success that Tim has experienced in building his firm.

In September 2019, Malcolm Gladwell stepped on stage at Benaroya Hall as part of SAL's Literary Arts Series to discuss his book Talking to Strangers. That night, his talk brought us into the complicated layers that underlie our most fraught and violent interactions. The Los Angeles Times called Talking to Strangers “a compelling, conversation-starting read.” It's a thoughtful and nuanced meditation on how we see others, and how we see the world. Like all of Gladwell's work, brilliant storytelling and razor sharp-observations carry us to understand the world in new ways.
EPISODE 147 The health club I belong to has an elite junior volleyball program. One thing I noticed is that a majority of the volleyball players are female, high-school age players that all look the same. They are all tall, about 5'8″ to 5'10”, thin, all have shoulder length hair, tied up in pony tails. They all are wearing the same volleyball club uniforms, so they all look very similar, almost identical. It is very difficult with just a casual observation to tell any of the players apart. To me, the volleyball players reminded me of box of pencils, Volleyball pencils. Of course there were also other athletes on the volleyball court. Athletes who were taller, shorter and had different body types (e.g., thicker, thinner, etc.) than the other athletes on the volleyball court. These athletes were the “outliers.” Malcom Gladwell, in his book, Outliers, explains why "outliers" are some of the most successful people in the world. So how can you become a successful outlier? Try reprogramming your subconscious. Reprogramming your subconscious to become an outlier allows you to make a positive impact in your own life helps you co-create the life you truly desire. I am definitely an outlier. How about you? Out There on the Edge of Everything®… Stephen Lesavich, PhD Copyright © 2021, 2023 by Stephen Lesavich, PhD. All rights reserved. Keontay Gaines is the Assistant Director of Student Athlete Development at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). Keontay and I met in Lawrence, KS, where we quickly bonded over a fascination of the people around us. After growing up in inner-city Baltimore, Keontay went on to play college football, build a family, and grab several degrees along the way. He is a great example of someone who did not have opportunity immediately spelled out for him, so he had to find ways to create it. From creating his own snack resale business to telling stories that inspire those around him, his timeline began to take off. In this conversation, we cover a bunch of topics, including: how Keontay discovered football and his biggest sports failure of his career, the most important book he read that ended up changing his life, what Keontay created (snack biz) to learn how to work with people as a kid, why being alone is super bad, and how to build yourself up by choosing the correct people to be in your inner environment. I was encouraged to lean further into self-belief, think less of waiting on opportunity but think more of creating it, put people around me who have a drive to love the people around them, and place a value on resilience. David Epstein is an investigative journalist and author who is fascinated by extraordinary people. Are they born this way? Is it their upbringing? A lot of “hard work?” Modern thinking about this, spearheaded by Malcom Gladwell, points to "10,000 hours" of narrow, focused work. Yo-Yo Ma and Serena Williams have been practicing their craft since the womb. But David discovered a different paradigm: That the most successful professionals and entrepreneurs were not narrowly focused on practice, but had spent long portions of childhood “sampling” and exploring. By combining skills from many arenas, they become far more adaptable in the long run than those who stay narrow – and ultimately burn out. David's latest book is called "Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World." His thesis has huge ramifications for education and career training, and as you'll hear, he even went toe-to-toe with Gladwell on the topic.
