Marvyn Harrison and Kojo go back. Two decades of parallel paths, community builders, event makers, fathers, who were never quite in the same room long enough to have the real conversation. Until now.In this episode, they cover everything. The g:hop era. The Sunday Show years, Ed Sheeran performing there eight times, Drake, Jay Cole, Wretch 32, Nicki Minaj, Omarion, Boys II Men. How the show grew from a Clerkenwell warehouse to Leicester Square to 2,000 at Proud. The unspoken tension between Sunday Show and Kojo's Funhouse that both men address for the first time. The people who tried to put them against each other. And why they wasted years not collaborating because of it.Then it gets personal.Marvyn on being in South Africa and genuinely believing his children didn't need him. The phone call from his mum that changed everything. The men in LA who told him being absent was just "the grind." Why he flew home and rebuilt his life around his kids. Why men's happiness is structurally treated as an oxymoron, and what it costs us when we accept that. And what it actually looks like to build a life where your no is powerful and your presence is enough. This is two brothers. One conversation. Twenty years in the making.

Newspaper cartooning has a long history of using satire and humour to provide social commentary on the issues of the day – but how do female perspectives inform the approach, themes and tone of newspaper cartooning? Andrea Arroyo is from Mexico City. Her work as a dancer took her to New York in the early eighties. In the US, an exhibition of her visual art was picked up to feature in the New York Times and spawned a career as a newspaper cartoonist. Her influence as a dancer can be seen in her rhythmic, fluid line work. Her artwork about the Me Too movement won a United Nations award for Political Cartooning. Sarah Akinterinwa is from Kent in the UK. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she created a comic about a millennial couple called Oyin and Kojo, hoping to create better representation of Black British people in cartoons. After posting a daily drawing to social media, the cartoon editor of the New Yorker discovered her work and asked her to become a contributor. Sarah is also a cartoonist at The Guardian. Her strips tackle women's issues, gender dynamics, friendships, relationships, health and politics. Produced by Elena Angelides and Jane Thurlow(Image: (L) Sarah Akinterinwa, credit Sarah Akinterinwa. (R) Andrea Arroyo, credit Felipe Galindo.)

After retiring from the daily show in 2021, Kojo Nnamdi thought he would finally write his memoir in peace. Instead, station management offered him a part-time role hosting the weekly Politics Hour. That semi-retired structure turned out to be a gift. “I now describe myself as semi-retired,” he said. “It gave me a place to go every day… and that helps a lot.” He contrasted his experience with his father's retirement in Guyana, which led to inactivity, a stroke, and an early death. “I learned a significant lesson… about what not to do in retirement.”Listeners meet:A longtime telephone repairman who doodled shoes in high school and later became a professional shoe designer. Two retired New York air traffic controllers who took usher jobs at Madison Square Garden — trading control towers for hockey crowds and Rangers fandom. “We are essentially doing the same job… telling people where to go,” they joked. The role gave them free games, star-player encounters, and a vibrant new social circle.Mary Kay Fleming (interviewed before her passing), who described aging as a “crisis” of shrinking social circles and changing bodies — then showed how contributing to the world and finding what makes you feel alive can transform it.Nnamdi emphasized a common thread: vulnerability. None of the guests positioned themselves as instant experts. “They were all very vulnerable in the mistakes that they made and how they accidentally stumbled into something that gave them purpose, passion, and connected them to community,” Gurney noted. The conversation repeatedly returned to three big ideas that resonate deeply with anyone navigating life after 50 or 60:Stay curious. “Curiosity is what I think is the key to the future after we have retired,” Nnamdi said. He urged listeners to revisit old hobbies or volunteer — “You will meet people and you will find new environments in which you might become extremely proficient and find that you might actually love being in those environments.”Transform fear into excitement. Many guests admitted initial terror (one man hesitated to return to school for shoe design; the swimmer felt visceral panic when the water turned black under the bridge). But pushing through turned fear into energy. Nnamdi linked this to a deeper truth: the fear many retirees feel most is death. Staying engaged crowds out that fear. “If we have something to do that is of interest to us, we don't think a great deal about the hereafter.”Build community. Radio and podcasts create intimate, one-on-one trust. Nnamdi shared a wild story from his early WHUR days: a man bicycled into the station and confessed murders to a veteran DJ because “he'd been listening to me on the radio for years and he considered me his closest friend.” The same intimacy happens in Young at Heart — and in Positive Aging Community discussions. “The people who listen to this podcast are a part of a community who have shared interests,” Nnamdi observed. He also praised WAMU's old "In Your Community” events, where listeners from vastly different neighborhoods discovered they faced the same concerns. “They brought out commonalities that people have.”Young at Heart is available on WAMU.org, NPR, and major podcast platforms. New episodes are in the works.Want to share your own reinvention story? Visit the official form at wamu.org/young-at-heart As Nnamdi and Kaufman prove, the best stories often come from ordinary people who simply decided to try something new.In closing, Nnamdi quoted the old saying with a smile: “It ain't over till it's over.” Whether you're sketching shoes on the side, ushering at hockey games, swimming under bridges, or simply showing up curious every day, the message is clear: retirement isn't an ending — it's an invitation to a new beginning.Tune in. Submit your story. And remember — your next chapter might just be the best one yet.Listen now: wamu.org/show/young-at-heart Share your story: wamu.org/young-at-heart-share

Eugene Vindman joined the show from the U.S. Capitol to discuss why he thinks the military strikes were illegal and what might be next. Plus, Rep. Vindman weighed in on Virginia redistricting as early voting gets underway. The D.C. Council passed two bills this week aimed at increasing transparency around MPD's cooperation with federal immigration agencies. At-Large Councilmember Christina Henderson got behind the mic to talk about the legislation and why the bills are necessary, despite objections from D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. She also discussed her efforts to raise taxes on "flushable" wipes. Henderson introduced the bill following an incident in which wipes clogged pumps used to mitigate a sewage spill in the Potomac. It may say flushable on your package, and, sure, it may get down the drain in that immediate, but we know that it is causing backups, not just in the D.C water utility system, but in folks' homes and apartment buildings," she said. The tax revenue generated by the bill would go toward sewer maintenance and repair by D.C. Water. As a potential alternative to the wipes, Henderson's bill also offers a sales tax break on bidetsArlington County is facing major budget challenges that could lead the County Board to raise taxes. Arlington County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti sat down with Kojo and Tom to discuss how the board plans to navigate a nearly $40 million budget gap, including possibly eliminating a popular youth gymnastics program and saving the county nearly $1 million. But some residents are pushing back, saying the program serves thousands of kids. Board Chair de Ferranti said the county needs to make tough budget choices."We have to be looking at all the services that might not be core services or might not be serving the most vulnerable," he said.De Ferranti said the board is considering other options for the program, like changing fees and focusing on serving kids with special needs. Plus, Board Chair de Ferranti talked about how leaders are preparing for a potential surge in federal immigration enforcement in the county.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser this week declared the Potomac River sewage spill a public emergency while also requesting federal help and money for cleanup. It's the latest move in a local disaster that has turned political. NBC 4 Washington reporter Mark Segraves joined Kojo and Tom to break down what exactly happened, how local officials are trying to manage the crisis, and what comes next. The data center debate has come to Montgomery County. Elected officials in recent weeks have taken competing stances on the best way to manage data center growth, including a proposal to restrict them to industrial areas. Montgomery County Council Vice President Marilyn Balcomb represents the area around one controversial project. She got behind the mic to discuss why it's important for the county to limit where developers can build data centers, but still believes they have a place in the county.Balcombe said the county needs to think about data centers as a source of tax revenue. The county currently has four data centers, with a fifth being built in her district. “Roughly $10 million per year per data center. So, if we have five data centers, that would be $50 million, she said. "That's a lot of money when we think about how to balance our budget."A public hearing for the proposed zoning amendment is scheduled for Tuesday. The Virginia General Assembly session hit its midpoint this week, known as "Crossover Day," with approved bills moving forward to the other chamber. Virginia House Delegate Adele McClure, who represents Arlington County, joined us from Richmond to break down the docket and her priorities as the session moves into its final weeks. Plus, we discussed the latest court ruling halting Virginia's redistricting referendum.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

Last month's winter storm continues to pose challenges for counties and cities across the region. In Prince George's County, some side streets are still snow- and ice-covered, and schools only reopened on Wednesday of this week. Prince George's County Executive Aisha Braveboy joined Kojo and Tom to explain why the county is struggling with cleanup. Plus, we asked County Executive Braveboy why she supports some Maryland lawmakers' efforts to redraw Congressional maps. The bill allows Democrats to re-work the congressional map in their favor, with the goal of ousting the state's lone Republican representative. But the legislation is expected to stall in the state Senate, where Democratic leadership says it's political and legally risky. County Executive Aisha Braveboy said she supports redistricting because of the outsized effect it could have on her county.“Politics, unfortunately, and especially at the federal level, really impacts Maryland disproportionately," she said. "We have about 65,000 federal workers in Prince George's County. About 5,000 of them have lost their jobs over the past few months."She said the bill should receive an up-or-down vote since state delegates and Governor Wes Moore favor the new maps. The U.S. House of Representatives voted Wednesday to block D.C.'s tax plan, which, if approved by the Senate, would cost D.C. $600 million in revenue. Ward 6 D.C. Councilmember Charles Allen got behind the mic to explain why this would be a significant blow to the District's budget. If the District is forced to mirror federal tax cuts at the local level, it could cost the city $600 million in revenue. Beyond blowing a hole in the city's budget, it also could lead to a massive administrative headache. Federal taxes would still be due in the spring, but the local filing deadline would be pushed to account for the change.“Every single person, every business, and every resident in the district will now have their entire tax filing upended by six or eight months," said Allen. "You're gonna be filing your taxes for D.C. in the fall. It's a mess."A vote in the Senate on the measure is expected in the coming weeks.Plus, we discussed the significant layoffs at the Washington Post this week.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

In this week's episode we are speaking with Kojo Baidoo, a naturalist and ecologist, all about the incredible vulture. Kojo received his degree in ecology and evolutionary biology from Princeton University where he did his senior thesis on black vultures. He is currently working with the Nature Conservancy in Nebraska on the Platte River Prairies learning about land management and conservation on about 4000 acres of protected prairie land. Kojo is just starting out in his formal career, but he's been a lifetime birder and is a lover of vultures, and part of his mission is fighting back against the negative PR animals like vultures get through his photography and social media which heavily features vultures. And so we asked him to join us as part of our mini-series dispelling false narratives about many animals. Thanks for joining us and we hope you share this episode! Lots of love. We took the Politics Hour on the road this week, broadcasting live from Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax, Virginia.U.S. Representative James Walkinshaw (D-VA11) joined Kojo and Tom first on stage. With elections and the government shutdown in the rearview mirror, we turned to what the future holds for the commonwealth. Federal cuts continue to affect Northern Virginia's economy, but perhaps not in the way some initially feared. As Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger prepares to take office in January, many Virginia Democrats believe the party's big wins in statewide elections should translate to an aggressive legislative agenda. Statewide leaders are also moving forward with redistricting. Rep. Walkinshaw discussed what all of this means for Virginia's future, including the 2026 midterms. Then, former member of the Virginia House of Delegates and member of Gov.-elect Spanberger's transition team Republican David Ramadan took the mic to talk about the challenges Spanberger could face as governor, why a Democrat election sweep does not mean a mandate, and the legislative debates we can expect in 2026.Sorting political fact from fiction, and having fun while we're at it.
