His foundation, Champions for Life, is making a difference in the lives of so many young people. Jon was a protege of David's, and through the influence of David's life and career, and a challenging health crisis that we unpack in this session, Jon was inspired to become an Athletic Therapist and Strength and Conditioning Coach.  Today, Jon is the Assistant AT for the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club and is one of those unique professionals who embody the practice of Reconditioning. I loved unpacking all the synergies and confluence of connection between the three of us in this session, there are a lot of golden threads worth hearing.

EP 245 is an insightful self-reflection on the fragility of life.  I recognized recently with the passing of filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallee, my own mortality. At 58 years old (the same age as he), I was struck by how quickly life can change, how much time I really do have left on this planet, and the age-old question of my own journey.  Am I running towards something, or running away?  Am I busy living, or am I busy dying?  At the end of the day, none of us get to define our timeline, but we do get to define how we spend what we have.  Are you spending wisely, are you defining your own growth and exploration, or is it being defined for you?  Questions worth our contemplation. I'll be releasing a little micro-course on my website to get you started in 2022 with your own personal reflection and direction www.lymlab.com

Don has coached actors, athletes, & musicians throughout his career, and in 2005, he opened his NYC Gym, Drive 495. Having lifted at the elite world-class level since 2005, Brian has well over a decade of world-class lifting experience. He has totaled more than ten times his body weight in three different classes, and both bench pressed and deadlifted over 800 pounds in two different classes. In his career, he's totaled 2500 over 20 times in 2 different weight classes. Most recently in October of 2020, Brian set the record for the highest squat of all-time (regardless of weight class) lifting 1306lbs. The story of his all-time squat record is most impressive not just for the unbelievable accomplishment it is, but that it came after a challenging recovery from a devastating back injury he suffered in 2012 that many experts said, would likely end his career. Upon his return to the pinnacle of world-class lifting (while 100% pain and symptom-free), he is now dedicated to helping others avoid the same mistakes that he made in the past through his own private group coaching and mentorship. Now, much of his focus is on assessment, movement, and coaching with lifting skills, and what he has taken away from his McGill certification to help people get better at lifting and life.  Enjoy!

On today's episode, Jason kicks things off by running through the list of potential landing sports for Odell Beckham Jr. The New England Patriots make zero sense. Anybody who thinks that OBJ could become Randy Moss 2.0 is fooling themselves. Moss' Patriots were led by Tom Brady and a Super Bowl-caliber defense; these Patriots are led by rookie Matt Jones. Sticking in the NFL, it's fitting that Aaron Rodgers returned to the Pat McAfee Show (again) for damage control stemming from his comments last week regarding the COVID-19 vaccine. Rodgers didn't want to be challenged so he went to his one friend in the media he knew wouldn't push back. It's a tale as old as time. Later, professional poker player and sports bettor David Baker swings by to discuss what it's like playing in the World Series of Poker and how it compares favorably to sports wagering survivor pools, why it's so important to ignore market manipulation and trust what you see when betting on games, why he's been higher than most on Ryan Tannehill and the Tennessee Titans all season long, why he thinks that Justin Herbert was anointed too and thus made the Los Angeles Chargers a tough team to fire on at times, why he likes the New England Patriots against Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns this Sunday, why he believes this is a 'get right' week for the Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams, and much more! For real, we aren't making this up The Kyle Beach story, and how it is the same tale of sexual assault and its resultant cover up by by team, league and governing bodies sounds all too familiar, and not just because it's the same scandal the Catholic Church still hasn't fully dealt with either Part 2 of 3 of the Podcast only content – The way it looks like right now the best odds of any team in CLE making the postseason might be the Cavs... Seriously (begins around 1:23:00)  Lachlan MacKinnon's ‘Best of Edition' Let Me Tell You A Story: “I'm Going To Hell” (begins around 1:35:00) Terrestrial: Hour 2 (begins around 1:40:00) Local great Machine Go Boom returns to the stage for the first time in over a decade, the Rock Hall Inductions also return, and Scene sees fit to release its Top 50 Concerts in CLE of all time, and it's not as bad as you'd think but it's still mostly nothing but banal click bait PETA is as crazy as MAGA at this point, which provides the perfect display of how the two extremes in this country is ripping it apart Part 3 of 3 of the Podcast only content – Mollie's Weekly Reports...  (begins around 2:36:00) Terrestrial: Hour 3 (begins around 3:04) Guardians vs Guardians will end exactly how we think it will so stop making it news when it's not, meanwhile, what's going on with Rams owner Stan Kroenke has the NFL owners turning against themselves, and its endgame could change the way owners in all sports conduct business going forward, yet that isn't making much headlines at all Mollie's Weekly Reports, terrestrial edition!  All this and so much more on this episode of the Defend Cleveland Podcast. EPISODE / BOOK SUMMARY Get your copy ofhttps://amzn.to/3B8b3Nn ( LOSERVILLE) In July 1975 the editors of the Atlanta Constitution ran a two-part series entitled “Loserville, U.S.A.” The provocatively titled series detailed the futility of Atlanta's four professional sports teams in the decade following the 1966 arrival of its first two major league franchises, Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves and the National Football League's Atlanta Falcons. Two years later, the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association became the city's third major professional sports franchise. In 1972 the National Hockey League granted the Flames expansion franchise to the city, making Atlanta the first southern city with teams in all four of the big leagues. The excitement surrounding the arrival of four professional franchises in Atlanta in a six-year period soon gave way to widespread frustration and, eventually, widespread apathy toward its home teams. All four of Atlanta's franchises struggled in the standings and struggled to draw fans to their games. Atlantans' indifference to their new teams took place amid the social and political fracturing that had resulted from a new Black majority in Atlanta and a predominately white suburban exodus. Sports could never quite bridge the divergence between the two. Loserville examines the pursuit, arrival, and response to professional sports in Atlanta during its first decade as a major league city (1966–75). It scrutinizes the origins of what remains the primary model for acquiring professional sports franchises: offers of municipal financing for new stadiums. Other Sunbelt cities like San Diego, Phoenix, and Tampa that aspired to big-league stature adopted Atlanta's approach. Like the teams in Atlanta, the franchises in these cities have had mixed results—both in terms of on-field success and financial stability. On today's episode, Jason kicks things off with a few thoughts on the Tennessee Titan's improbable victory over the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. Facing a 4th-and-1 inside the five yard lines with only seconds left in the game, the Bills decided to go for it rather than kick a game-tying field goal. Josh Allen was stopped short and the Bills ultimately lost, but it was the right call. Every advanced stat says you go for it in that situation; Only coaches who are stuck in the stone age would settle for the field goal. What's more, Buffalo is already the class of the AFC, and the decision to act aggressively is only going to help them later in the season. Later, professional sports bettor Preston Johnson swings by to discuss why disgruntled superstar Ben Simmons has to play during the regular so the Philadelphia 76ers can raise his trade value, why James Harden MVP and scoring champion prop bets have serious value, why he's buying stock on the new-look Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference, why he believes Luka Doncic has the potential to finish his career alongside Michael Jordan and LeBron James in the GOAT conversation, why it's so hard to envision the New Orleans Pelicans winning 40+ games without a healthy Zion Williamson for most of the season, why he's expecting a big regression to the mean for the Los Angeles Clippers' shooters, why the clunky roster construction around LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook almost ensures that the Los Angeles Lakers will finish under their projected regular season win total, and much more!
