Adventures abound as we head to Los Angeles to chat with Noelle Scaggs, Founder and President of Diversify The Stage and multi-platinum recording artist and co-front person of Fitz and The Tantrums – indie pop and neo soul band with hits like “Out of My League” and “The Walker.” Noelle walks us through the inception of Diversify The Stage (DTS), and its mission of creating more equal and equitable opportunities among aspiring live music industry professionals from marginalized communities and backgrounds. We discuss steps that companies and venues can take to be intentional in diversifying their own business and staff, and how DTS utilizes a combination of masterclasses, mentorship placements, and apprenticeships to not only help create opportunities but also set up for the future by engaging young people and introducing them to industry careers. We also chat about the current state of the music industry and the mix of challenges, trends, and innovations that artists are presently navigating. Noelle talks about some of her favorite venues, such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre (Denver) and the 9:30 Club (Washington, D.C.), and what makes those and other venues special from the artist's perspective. When Noelle isn't performing, writing, or working on DTS, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her dogs – including a travel and food website she manages called Adventures with Scaggs. The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
Tom Dobrez is the author of “Root Root Root for the Home Teams: A Chicago Fan's Odyssey to Find the Meaning of Life Through Sports”, an autobiographical account of his life as a sports fan. In this memoir, he examines how sports can teach us about family and success in life. In this episode of the Dad Edge podcast, Larry Hagner welcomes author Tom Dobrez to discuss his book "Root, Root, Root" and his unique childhood experiences with his father. Tom shares how his dad was not only his baseball coach but also took him and his siblings to professional sporting events in Chicago. They touch on their love for Chicago sports and even mention the Cubs, despite Tom's slight aversion as a St. Louis resident. This episode offers a heartfelt exploration of the father-son relationship and the impact it can have on a child's life. Tom describes how his father was their baseball coach, and they would often play organized sports together. However, it was not just organized sports that filled their days. Tom's father built a small ball field in their backyard, providing the perfect setting for their baseball games. The family's love for sports extended to attending professional sporting events, such as Chicago White Sox, Blackhawks, and Bears games. This exposure to sports and outdoor activities created a foundation for Tom's love of sports and physical activity. Engaging in outdoor play has numerous benefits for children's physical and mental well-being. Outdoor play promotes physical fitness and helps children develop gross motor skills, coordination, and balance. Playing sports and games also teaches children the importance of teamwork, communication, and fair play. Additionally, being outdoors exposes children to fresh air and sunlight, which are essential for overall health and well-being. Outdoor play also has significant mental health benefits. Being in nature has a calming effect on the mind and reduces stress and anxiety. It allows children to disconnect from technology and experience the natural world around them. In today's digital age, where children are often glued to screens and have limited opportunities for outdoor play, it is crucial to recognize the importance of outdoor play in childhood. Tom's childhood experiences highlight the joy and benefits of spending time outdoors, engaging in physical activities, and building connections with others. www.thedadedge.com/friday116 www.rootrootrootbook.com

Toss on your Pats jersey and head with us to Foxborough as we hear all about New England's largest venue from Kassie Epstein, Manager of Business Development & External Affairs for Gillette Stadium (Kraft Sports + Entertainment). Kassie and her team oversee every full stadium ticketed event that doesn't fall under New England Patriots football or New England Revolution soccer - such as motorsports, collegiate events, and their concert series. Hear about their responsibilities with promotions, marketing, and being a tour liaison, and how that has changed as more and more tours are playing stadiums. We talk about what makes good stadium shows and how artists are challenged even more to make the shows interactive and fun for all attendees – especially the ones seated far away. Hosting three nights of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, Kassie takes us through that experience and how Taylor has really set the bar for a stadium show experience. We dive into social media platforms and when to adopt/drop them, the current challenges venues face with music licensing, and the importance for venues to create original content for their feeds to balance out push-down content from artists. FRIENDS! AI came up with that title and it is hard not what I would have chosen for myself
Pro sports is about more than just "the thrill of victory" and "the agony of defeat". It's grown into a massive global industry that contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to the economy. As such, it should come as no surprise that Las Vegas wants to get a piece of the action. And according to proponents, the impact pro sports can have on a community goes beyond what happens on the field or at the rink; job creation, tax revenue, and increased tourism are often cited as being big benefits to being the home of a pro sports franchise or hosting a big event like the Super Bowl or Formula 1. These "benefits" are also the same ones brought up by team owners when they're trying to convince governments to hand over tax dollars to build new stadiums, as in the case of the Oakland A's likely relocation to Las Vegas. But are these impacts real? Do communities actually see any major economic benefit? And is there an upside to the government handing hundreds of millions of dollars to billionaire team owners to build venues? My guest is here to answer those questions - and more! Victor Matheson is a Professor of Economics & Accounting specializing in Sports Economics at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. Victor has published numerous articles on the economic impact of hosting mega-sports events as well as the economics of sports stadiums, including the effects of public financing of sports facilities. Hold on to your cowboy hats as we set off on a galloping journey back to the wild West - the birthplace of the rodeo. We're venturing back to the mid-1800s, where it all began with Spanish missionaries, Vecarro culture, and the early cowboys whose fierce rivalry sparked the creation of what we now know as professional rodeo. Discover how their roping and riding contests for bragging rights transformed into a recognized sport, with a nod to pioneers like William F. Cody and his entertainment shows, and William Pickett's innovative bull-wrestling technique, bulldogging. We'll also steer you through the various events that have become hallmarks of the professional rodeo - from the rough and tumble of saddle bronc riding and bull riding to the heart-pounding excitement of team roping and barrel racing. Listen as we dissect each event, revealing how their roots lie deep in traditional ranching practices. As we hit the 20th century, join us for a rewind of the first annual Dodge City Rodeo in 1939, and a salute to influential women like Annie Oakley and Mabel Strickland Woodward, who paved the way for women in the sport. Saddle up as we head down to Fort Worth, Texas, and talk with Becca Berger, Senior Sports Marketing Manager for Fort Worth Sports Commission. Becca tells us what it's like to work for a sports commission, explaining the many aspects of what she's involved in for events coming to the city – from hospitality to marketing to hosting and execution. She talks about what it's like working with national governing bodies and things that makes it different than working for a pro sports team, such as planning events multiple years out. With Becca getting her start working in athletics at KU to stints with different teams and venues, she has good perspective on all the marketing people involved with executing successful events and how the sports commission side is often the glue bringing so many groups together for the overall experience and event hospitality. Hear about Fort Worth's unique position in a busy market, and how they often collaborate with nearby Dallas. Becca tells us about her food blog she started during the pandemic, The Confident Kitchen, which focuses on healthy eating using dairy-free (and often gluten-free) ingredients, and how experimenting with marketing a personal food blog has helped her grow in her main career. Enjoy this interesting, informative episode with great perspective on career path options, a look inside sports commission life, and mouth-drooling talk about amazing recipes. Apart from that, we also have John's Hot Knives, including a potential future Tennis GOAT and, unsurprisingly, Richie Mounga. There's no time for a Nicks bit or Question Time this week as we were so preoccupied with the drive-off, but a massive thanks to the Velocity Range @ Remuera Golf Club for hosting us. https://velocityrange.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today's show, A Veteran of the Global War on Terror Discusses - America Looks Weak: How Woke Culture Could Lead to WW3 & A New Military Draft. GUEST OVERVIEW: Wylie McGraw is a former Star Pitcher, Competitive Bull Rider, and 3-Tour Combat Veteran. It was through those intense experiences that he discovered his crazy superpower of being able to expose blind spots, erupt and eradicate stress, and fully unleash the untapped potential of high achievers. He's the founder of Radical Performance Acceleration, and for well over a decade now he's been behind the scenes doing life-altering work with powerful CEOs, Entrepreneurs, Leaders, and Public Figures, accelerating their performance both personally and professionally. His work is the proverbial “Navy SEAL Training” equivalent to high-performance and leadership development – pushing even the elite beyond their limits so they not only hit their peak but sustain it. He's been named a “secret weapon” by some of the most influential leaders across industries from Wall St., Hollywood, Professional Sports, Fortune 500 companies, Personal Development, and everything in between. His work is about giving an elite edge to high-achieving individuals while ending their cycle of stress, sacrifice, and suffering that's unfortunately associated when reaching their levels of accomplishment and success. When Wylie's not traveling the country to meet his clients, this family man enjoys skydiving, mountain top sunsets, and sipping on an occasional 18-year-old single malt scotch while pondering the philosophies of life, the cosmos, and beyond. https://www.wyliemcgraw.com/

Journey with us up north to the “Golden Heart of Alaska” as we chat with Terrell Echols, General Manager of the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. As you can imagine, there are many differences and exciting challenges with running a venue in Alaska. Terrell tells us about the venue's place in the city and what they aim to provide. In addition to hosting touring events, the Carlson Center also serves as a community center, recreational skating rink, and even home to an indoor playground – which is great on short, cold, winter days, which at one point in the year is only two hours of daylight. Hear how Fairbanks, located in the Tanana Valley, between the hills and the Alaska Range, works closely with Anchorage to make routing shows more attractive to promoters, which is sometimes their biggest challenge. Terrell talks about his history, from growing up in Chicago to following different interests to ultimately getting into sports management at Columbia College. He tells us about his experience with community engagement and how his time working with students who had behavioral issues taught him so much about communication, the importance of listening to people, and how that experience has helped him in his work of making sure their venue is open for everyone, no matter their interests. Enjoy this informative, fun, episode that may inspire you to follow that interesting career opportunity to a new and exciting job.Terrell Echols: LinkedIn | EmailFNSB Carlson Center: Facebook

This EP is near to my heart. My guest Jodi van Rees is the real definition of a pioneer. This is a story of overcoming hardship, challenging hurdles, and impossible barriers to become one of the first women on the bench or on the sidelines of men's professional sport. It's worth your time.Prior to her work in the corporate world, Jodi was a Certified Athletic Therapist and a Massage Therapist, and a pioneer in the field. She worked her way up from university hockey to pro roller hockey, to Major Junior Hockey, and finally to the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens. She was a pioneer for women in the field becoming the first woman to work as an Athletic Therapist in the Quebec Major Junior hockey league, and the first woman to be an Athletic Therapist behind the bench in the NHL. Since leaving the NHL, Jodi has served as a Disability Management specialist in the insurance industry for the last 20 years and she is currently working as a Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement Advisor with Telus Health, formerly known as LifeWorks. Beyond all her achievements she is also a great partner to her husband Matt and mother of her boy Nolan. In today's episode, I share a short yet very important extract from episode 122, where Professor Camilla Knight chats to me about the wellbeing of sporting children, communication between children and parents, parental stressors, as well as touching on self-care as a parent. Key Learning Points The sporting environment will naturally shape the thoughts, feelings and behaviours of children. Understanding what your child's typical behaviours are, is really important to be aware of, as you can then start to notice when their behaviours start to change. Regular conversations with children are key, understanding your child as an individual whilst not getting drawn into comparing them to others. An exclusive athletic identity too early for children can be detrimental. Parents have to deal with their own time and financial stressors which isn't easy for some. It's vital to recognise that the parent-child relationship is a relationship and that it is bi-directional.
