The idea for the Anti-Racist Journey came to host, Kamala Avila Salmon, this past summer when everyone you know was getting “woke” and almost all the Black people you know were feeling exhausted by all the “woke” talk without action. The journey is arranged as a funnel, based on her past as a marketer - it is meant to mimic the marketing conversion funnel of taking consumers from unaware of your product to deciding to become customers. After sketching it out, her career coach asked her a very simple question: “What about relationships? People need to truly be in COMMUNITY with the groups they are aiming to be allies too.” It was a lightbulb moment for her, and leads us to this episode because the subject of many of her initial writings about race revolved around the importance of interracial friendships where honest conversations about race could take place. For this episode she invited a couple of her best friends who, as she humbly brags about as “total BOSSES!” Dr. Monica Huerta, author, Co-Director at Organizing Stories, and  English and American Studies Professor at Princeton, and Jessica Massa, storyteller, people leader and activist at BuzzFeed. Monica is Mexican-American and Jess is White and of Italian heritage. While they both have done work relevant to the topics of race, inclusion, and equity, they were mostly invited because they have diverse circles of friends of all races and backgrounds, regardless of where they live and work. Josh & Patrick sat down to continue the conversation around racism with Dorien Banks and Marcus Martin, two Black men in their early twenties that grew up in Atascadero. As they share their own personal experiences with racism, we discuss use of the “n-word” as well as Black Lives Matter and police interaction. The founding of Atascadero came up again, what it meant to be a colony, and the need for more diversity & inclusion. We talked about the confederate flag and protesting vs. rioting. Episode 19 is an interview with Rachel Kaplan following the murder of George Floyd and the Global response to end racism during the pandemic. Rachel B. Kaplan is a native New Yorker who thrives on helping people. She's Bikram Yoga Certified and has been teaching yoga and breath work for over 13 years and doesn't plan on ever stopping. Although yoga can most certainly help transform a person's health, Rachel saw a need in her yoga community to coach her students about how they were fueling their bodies to gain maximum results on their mat. She decided to go back to school and earn her 2nd degree in Food and Nutrition Sciences. In 2017 she graduated from University of Alabama and has chosen the path of Holistic Health Coach. Currently, she works with professionals, all over the world, to explore what's holding them back from living their version of good health and helping them shed light on what action steps they can take that will bring about positive change. She is passionate about helping people know their truth so they can take action towards living their healthiest life. Episode 81: Leadership and InclusivityAs someone who grew up in a multi-race household, and now has a multi-race family of my own, I have always felt I was "doing my part." I assumed that my allyship was implied. It was not. I have always thought of myself as someone who advocates for diversity and inclusion, but the truth is I have not been an active ally and I now understand that being aware of a problem is not the same thing as advocating for change.I am working on becoming a better advocate, both personally and professionally. I know that this is a lifelong journey. I don't have all the answers, not even close. And that is an uncomfortable place for me.But I am willing to sit with the discomfort. I'm willing to examine my own biases, which I hope in turn will help others find room to do the same.I believe that in this situation, much like motherhood and entrepreneurship, it is not about getting it perfect. It's about making a start. And I'm starting with education – MY education, my children's education, and listening to my community.In this episode, I talk about what I'm doing as a human. I talk about what I'm doing as a mother. And I talk about what I'm doing as a business owner and leader. Dr. Glenn Wakam is a General Surgery Resident at the University of Michigan. He has been one of the many healthcare workers who have been on the frontlines during the COVID-19 Crisis in America working to keep those inflicted with the illness safe. A witness to the heartbreaking conditions created by the pandemic, Glenn co-authored a moving piece titled “Not Dying Alone - Modern Compassionate Care in the COVID-19 Pandemic” which was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Glenn has subsequently been featured by a number of media outlets, including CNN, among others. Prior to entering the medical field Glenn was a standout multi-sport athlete in high school and played Defensive Back at Princeton University. He also holds the slightly less enviable title of being Ken's college roommate his Senior Year. With a friendship that has spanned nearly 13 years, Glenn and Ken broach a topic previously undiscussed between the two and have an open conversation about race and racism in America. This special conversation is motivated by the traumatic passing of George Floyd and the state of civil unrest that has unused and was done in an attempt to help further the conversation in hopes of creating understanding. Mathew Mitchell joined us for an open conversation on the difficult issues of race, diversity, inclusion and equity.  Mathew brings a unique perspective having grown up in the conservative community of Lompoc CA.  His father is a black man from Memphis TN, his mother an Irish immigrant to America, his sister is married to a woman and Mathew is a happy husband and father in a mixed-race family.  Mathew Mitchell was born to be a culture and engagement champion. Mathew and I discussed many issues about the Poway community including diversity (or lack thereof), the healing process after the Poway Chabad shooting, Poway schools, Poway High Football, the hate crime in December 2018 when a swastika was painted on a Jewish family’s home and the special opportunity to create an environment of consciousness and inclusion in our city.  (I am hopeful that my podcast can become a community forum where we can discuss these difficult conversations in a civil, respectful manner and learn from one another.) To kick things off, Robin explained what white fragility is, and the impact that it has not just on white people, but white progressives in particular. Ana and Robin then talked about the need for people who recognize racism’s ills not to get complacent or arrogant, but rather be actively anti-racist, and continue educating themselves. They then switched gears, and explored why white women often fail to be allies for people of color before probing the ways de facto segregation and tokenizing minorities are so deeply problematic.
