Dickson County native Katie Collins recently won the national 4-H Youth in Action Award. The award goes to four outstanding 4-Hers who have projects that bring a positive impact to their community. Collins is the first person from Tennessee to win the award. Thomas Capps Outstanding Tennessee collegiate 4-Her recognized nationally. Hello and welcome to Tennessee Home and Farm Radio. I'm Thomas Capps Katie Collins I was so ecstatic to win this award. Thomas Capps Katie Collins is a sophomore at the University of Tennessee Knoxville studying food and agricultural business. She has been heavily involved in 4-H in high school and now at the college level too. She's one of four to received the National 4-H Youth in Action Award this year. Katie Collins The Youth in Action Award is a national 4-H program that recognizes for diverse young leaders who make a positive impact in their community. Thomas Capps Each applicant submits a project that benefits their community, Collins submitted her community project called See Yourself in Agriculture, which helps expose youth agriculture that otherwise would have no contact with the industry. Katie Collins How I kind of got started in the project was I read a book to some third graders during ag literacy week, and about half of the kids didn't even know where their food came from. I grew up on a century dairy farm, 20 minutes down the road from these kids. And I was just like, mind boggled at the fact that they thought their food came from a grocery store in the third grade Thomas Capps As one of the four winners Collins will now travel around to be a spokesperson for the National 4-H Council. Katie Collins For the whole year, we will travel to different donor events, alumni, different 4-H events, do telephone interviews like this talk to our state leaders, different state leaders, about 4-H and about how we made a positive impact and sharing our 4-H story Thomas Capps Also as the winner, Collins receives a $5,000 scholarship, but she says it's just an honor to be recognized for her hard work and an honor to represent Tennessee. Katie Collins I'm the first Tennesseean to ever win the award, which is super exciting. And so I hope this gained some traction because I know people in Tennessee are doing great things. I'm hoping more people in Tennessee worldwide and they'll win the award in the future. Thomas Capps For Tennessee home and Farm Radio. I'm Thomas Capps. Thanks for listening and have a great day.

Tim spoke about infusing new technologies into his artwork as well as his teaching. He talked about how he's always worked in a variety of media and how teaching really contributes to this tendency as he teaches everything from painting to photography to design, weaving in Augmented Reality (AR). He also shared a bit about writing STEAM Power and speaking with scientists who affirmed the need for art to be included when talking about STEM in education - art is not simply an addition, tacked onto STEM, but a critical part of the processes and systems used in real world scenarios. Tim also talked about breaking into the art world and working outside it. He works as an artist and with his students to engage his local community and use art as a communication tool. His advice around working in a conservative community and bringing up issues of equity and empathy was so helpful. Being able and willing as an educator to share your vulnerabilities and truly be yourself can make such a difference. We have all seen videos of white police officers using excessive force or even shooting unarmed men of color. Policing has been an explosive topic when talking about racial relations in America. Following the creation of the hashtag Black Lives Matter, the cry for Blue Lives Matter was created to focus on the lives of police officers. The more recent call to defund the police has recently gained traction. Chief Allen Banks is the Chief of Police for the Round Rock (Texas) Police Department. Chief Banks gave 21 years of service to the Albuquerque, New Mexico police department before coming to Round Rock, Texas in 2014. The work that Chief Banks has done since being in Round Rock has earned him the Civil Rights Justice by Action Award in 2016 by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE). He was also named 2018 Citizen of the Year by the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce. Chief Banks and his wife, Tammy, have three children. In this episode, Chief Banks explains his policing philosophy, inequities within policing and the importance of community policing. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. :2 - Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. :3 - For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, :4 - for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. WHAT in the...World??? WRAL's political cartoonish (yes, a TV station has a political cartoonist) calls Republican members of the North Carolina Board of Education members of the KKK for opposing the use of Critical Race Theory to create new standards for K-12 Social Studies and History. One of those members is the first Black Lt. Gov. ever elected in NC. Another is a Native American. A third runs a ministry that was awarded the MLK Dream in Action Award. This kind of racist smear is dangerous and corrosive to our society, and it should be denounced as such by everyone associated with WRAL -- under the standard advanced by WRAL when it covers Republican scandals and gaffes. Three former guests on the podcast discuss a variety of topics, starting with a definition of the term “speed” and how that term fits into the training of distance runners. Specifically, Jeff Boelé and John O’Malley discuss acceleration and why it may or may not be useful for distance runners. The conversation then moves on to a discussion of terminology across a spectrum of intensities, including threshold and vVo2max running. Later in the podcast John and Jeff Boelé address a question Joan Hunter submitted regarding sub-max velocity work and their answers are fantastic.  This podcast is in many ways an extension of the conversations these three men and Jay Johnson have been engaging in via a text thread for the past year.  While technical at times, the majority of the information in this podcast will be useful for coaches with two years of experience, coaches with 20 years of experience and everyone in between.  For complete show notes visit CoachJayJohnson.com. Included is the link to the 20-minute video of Jeff Boelé’s neural session practice, the video that John O’Malley says is a must-watch. Visit BoulderRunningClinics.com to purchase the videos.   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  John O’Malley   A Brooks “Top 25 Most Inspiring Coaches” award winner, Coach O’Malley has an unprecedented coaching resume. He has had the unique ability to coach the “average” runner in addition to being able to take elite runners to the highest levels in Illinois and United States history. His cross country teams at Sandburg H.S. have qualified for state 14 years in a row, which accounts for every year he’s been coaching. His teams have placed in the top 10 in state eight separate occasions out, including three top-four finishes, a runner up in 2014 and a state championship in 2015. Without their #2 runner, his team placed 4th at NXN in 2015 after qualifying and placing 16th in 2014. In addition to coaching two NXN teams, he has coached two individual qualifiers.   He coached two-time Illinois state champion, 8:29 2-miler, 3:59 miler, only double Footlocker and Nike National Champion, Lukas Verzbicas. Last year Dylan Jacobs won Footlocker Midwest Regional, making Coach O’Malley the only coach to have coached two Footlocker Midwest Regional champions. Jacobs would go on to be a double All-American at NXN and Footlocker as a junior. At Detweiller Park, the Illinois state cross country course since 1972, two of O’Malley’s runners have broken 14:00, a feat only achieved by a total of six runners in Illinois history. His ability to create a culture in which all his athletes are fully engaged and determined is perhaps best exemplified by David Gleisner who as a healthy senior did not manage to make the team’s top seven and run at state or nationals, but would run 9:16 for 3200 that spring.   On the track, O’Malley has coached five runners who have run 4:10 or better for 1600 and 15 runners 1:57 or better in the 800. His 4 x 800 relays have been most dominant. Having run 7:46 or better for the last six consecutive seasons, they placed in the top five in state seven times, including two state champion relays and setting the Illinois State Record of 7:37.3. In all, he’s had ten different foursomes run under 7:48. Additionally, Sean Torpy set the all-time Illinois State Record in the 800 of 1:47.9. His 4 x mile relay won the 2016 New Balance Indoor National title. Sean Torpy would go on to become the Illinois state champion in the 1600, Chris Torpy the Illinois state 800 meter champion, and his team won three of the four distance events at the state meet in 2016, a feat only achieved two other times in state history. Last spring, after graduating three of his four state champions from 2016, his 4 x 800 came back to place 2nd in state in 7:46 and Dylan Jacobs ran 4:07 for 1600. O’Malley has coached three Gatorade Athletes of the Year: Lukas Verzbicas, Sean Torpy and Dylan Jacobs.   The Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Coach of the Year, NFHS Coach of the Year, United States Track and Cross Country Federation Coach of the Year, Coach O’Malley’s coaching resume is perhaps only surpassed by his teaching accolades, which includes the Northwestern University Distinguished Secondary Teacher Award, the Stanford University Excellence in Teaching Award, the Illinois Education Association Leadership in Action Award and the Western Illinois University Inspiring teach award.  Dr. Jeff Messer  Dr. Jeffrey I. Messer serves as department chair and faculty in exercise physiology for the Exercise Science Department at Mesa Community College, Mesa, Arizona.   Dr. Messer has published research in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, The American Journal of Physiology and The Journal of Applied Physiology. Most recently, Dr. Messer and co-authors published a 2016 paper entitled “A Simple Hydraulic Analog Model of Oxidative Phosphorylation.”   Dr. Messer applies his passion for teaching and scholarly inquiry through his strong involvement in coaching both interscholastic endurance athletes and, periodically, pre-secondary and post-collegiate endurance athletes.   Dr. Messer has been recognized by the United States Track-&-Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association as the 2016 National Girls High School Cross-Country Coach-of-the-Year.  From 2006 – 2012, Dr. Messer served as co-head coach for cross-country and assistant coach (distance) for track-&-field at Xavier College Preparatory, Phoenix, Arizona. The Xavier College Preparatory cross-country program earned six consecutive (2007 – 2012) Arizona high school girl’s state cross-country championships. During the three-year period from 2010 – 2012, the Xavier College Preparatory cross-country program concluded the associated cross-country seasons ranked 22nd, 8th, and 21st in the United States. During the 2012 Arizona high school track-&-field season, Xavier College Preparatory had twelve (12) student-athletes average 5:13 for the 1,600-meter distance.   In February 2013, Dr. Messer began to serve as head coach for girl’s cross-country and assistant coach (girls’ distance) for track-&-field at Desert Vista High School, Phoenix, Arizona. The Desert Vista High School girls’ cross-country program earned the 2013, 2014, and 2016 Arizona high school girls’ state cross-country championship. In late-May 2014, the Desert Vista High School girls’ distance program was ranked by MileSplit US as one of only two girls’ high school track-&-field programs in the United States with “top ten” groups in each of the 800-m, 1,600-m, and 3,200-m events. In December 2014, the Desert Vista High School girls’ cross-country program finished fifth (5th) at the Nike National High School Cross-Country Championship and thus concluded the 2014 high school cross-country season as the fifth (5th) ranked high school cross-country team in the United States. More recently, the Desert Vista High School girls’ cross-country program finished sixth (6th) at the 2016 Nike National High School Cross-Country Championship.   Subsequent to the 2016 high school cross-country season, Dr. Messer retired from his head coaching endeavors in order to expand his community college leadership pursuits.   Most recently, Dr. Messer returned and transitioned to the Desert Vista boys’ distance program as a volunteer assistant for the 2017 cross-country season. The Desert Vista High School boys’ cross-country program earned its first opportunity to compete at and ultimately finished eighth (8th) at the 2017 Nike National High School Cross-Country Championship. During the 2018 and 2019 Arizona high school cross-country seasons, Dr. Messer served as a volunteer assistant for the Desert Vista High School girls’ and boys’ cross-country programs.   Additionally, Dr. Messer serves as the coach for professional runner Jessica Tonn. Miss Tonn recently finished as national runner-up at the October 2019 USA Track-&-Field 5-K Championships and hopes to compete at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Track-&-Field Trials.   Jeff Boelé  Jeff has a unique background as a coach. In his near 20-year career, he has worked with middle school, high school, collegiate, professional, and masters athletes.  With a background as an endurance athlete, Jeff got his start coaching distance athletes at Greenville College in Greenville, IL in the summer of 2000. Upon moving to Boulder, CO in 2005, Jeff's coaching exploits started to diversify. He started working with a small group of post-collegiate athletes and eventually began helping at Lyons middle/senior high school (Lyons, CO) a few years later. It was at Lyons that Jeff's coaching acumen was refined. Brought on to coach the high jump, Jeff took the challenge of becoming a great jumps coach seriously, and that meant taking a deep dive into the speed/power world. Eventually, Jeff handled programming for the cross country team and all event groups (sprint, jump, throw, distance) for the track and field team. He had direct oversight of the jumps and distance events.    In 2015, Jeff met renowned coach Dan Pfaff at the ALTIS training enclave in Phoenix, AZ. Through this mentorship, Jeff was inspired to pursue a massage therapist license.  Becoming a licensed therapist in 2017 was one more skillset Jeff added to his coaching toolbox. The combination of sports therapy, speed/power and endurance training have equipped Jeff well for his current role of working with professional and semi-profession distance athletes in Boulder, CO.    Jeff has a proven track record of fostering a culture where athletes of all ages and abilities are able to develop and see continued progress in their athletic pursuits. Jeff holds USATF Level I and II (endurance) certifications and a jumps event specialist certification from the USTFCCCA. Additionally, he is a licensed massage therapist in the state of Colorado  Jeff works with or has worked with a number of notable athletes and teams.  Paul Roberts - 2 x Nike Cross National qualifier, 5th place Footlocker Cross Country (2015), IAAF World Cross Country qualifier (2015)  Katie Mackey - Multiple time US national champion, IAAF Indoor World Championship and Diamond League participant  Lyons high school - 16 team state championships (cross country/track) and numerous individual state champions since 2010

Dr. Sessoms remains driven by her passion to give voice to our underrepresented and marginalized populations, while also instilling in them a desire for lifelong learning and critical self-reflection.  These desires helped shape her doctoral research, entitled: "The Merging of the Personal and the Collective: Reimagining Black Natural Hair Care Digital Spaces as Sites of Critical Public Pedagogy."  Her work centers Black women who wear their hair natural and engage with Black Natural Hair Care Blogs.  Dr. Sessoms’ findings speak to: (a) the sanctity of Black affinity spaces, (b) the fetishizing of Black women’s bodies, (c) deconstructing the angry Black woman stereotype, (d) the narrow representation of Black women in media, (e) the commodification of natural hair, (f) Black women’s sense of agency, and (g) social media sites as a sharing community and sisterhood. I got a chance to speak with Scott Strode and I was blown away with how such a seemingly simple idea could have such a huge impact on recovery. And it makes sense, right? We were created for community and that's what he's created with The Phoenix. I'm looking forward to checking it out next time I'm in Denver or Boston! Scott is the founder and national executive director of The Phoenix. Phoenix offers a unique approach to combat addiction by fostering a sober, supportive, physically active community for individuals in recovery from substance use disorder. Phoenix is based on Scott's own experience and his discovery that a healthy, active lifestyle has a transformative effect on long-term sobriety. Scott also realized the critical component of surrounding oneself with a new sober supportive network of friends. Phoenix is unique in that its programs are free to anyone who has at least 48 hours of continuous sobriety. This removes a significant financial barrier to sobriety. Free programs include yoga, climbing, cycling, running, CrossFit, boxing, and socials. Since 2007, Phoenix has served over 24,000 individuals in 11 cities and 9 states with plans to expand into new communities in the near future. Scott was named a Top 10 CNN Hero in 2012, received the “Advocates for Action Award” from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, and was a TEDxMileHigh speaker in 2016. Scott's passion in life is to help others rise from the ashes of their addiction and live a full life of sobriety in long-term recovery.   To connect with Scott: * Email: scott@thephoenix.org * Website: www.thephoenix.org   Additional resources: * The Meadows * How the War on Drugs Has Changed Tunes

TODAY'S GUEST: Dr. Reese Halter Earth Doctor Reese Halter is the recipient of the President's Distinguished Service Award from Humboldt State University for his inimitable leadership in conservation biology, an Outstanding Environmental Awareness Achievement Award for Dr Reese's Planet from The National Society of The Daughters of the American Revolution, an Outstanding Achievement Award for writing The Insatiable Bark Beetle from California Lutheran University, an Outstanding Achievement Award for writing Shepherding the Sea: The Race to Save our Oceans from MUSE School CA, an Excellence in Conservation-in-Action Award from Sea Shepherd Australia and an Outstanding Service Award from the Rotary Club of Westlake Village Sunrise, California, for excellence in public outreach to "Save Nature Now." Join Dr Reese Halter from the tallest trees on Earth, Californian redwoods, and largest coastal forests of the Alaskan and British Columbian wilderness, Sitka spruce, to the incomparable honeybee and the incredibly delicate Monarch butterflies that migrate southward and return northward in the summer from Canada to Mexico and Baja California (which spans the life of 3 or 4 generations of the butterfly). From the land Down Under, marvel with him at breathtaking life on the Great Barrier Reef or the incredible bees that pollinate eucalypts, and express gratitude for the colossal leatherback sea turtles and remarkable whales of the Great Southern Ocean. And from Africa please take a few moments to read Dr. Reese Halter's stories on the endangered surreal cetaceans, magnificent elephants, and majestic rhinos. Or from SE Asia the latest great coal rush killing Earth and the last Sumatran tigers that loathsome poachers are mercilessly slaughtering in the bloody 'War Against Nature'. Or the repulsive ocean-killing bloodlust in Taiji, Japan, and the Danish Faroe Islands. Kudos to Captain Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for standing up to Japan and saying "Stop Killing Endangered Whales" and Bob Barker, the late Sam Simon, Pamela Anderson, Yao Ming, Pharrell Williams and "Anonymous" for being best friends forever to the Animal Kingdom. Humans are driving The Sixth Great Extinction, destroying sea life like nothing ever before since the dawning of reproductive life 1.1 billion years ago. The bees, trees, and seas are telling us to immediately future-proof our towns and cities -- climate in crisis. To protect nature we must love it, to love it we must understand it, to understand it we must be taught. From understanding comes wonder, which The Earth Doctor is a master at evoking. Please join him and help safeguard our environment! Connect With Today's guest: Dr. Reese Halter Website On Twitter On Facebook IN THIS EPISODE: The earth is our only home. Please take care of it! I love this episode with Dr. Reese Halter, because he not only talks about the danger our planet is in because of environmental toxins (especially due to the coal industry), but he also tells us specific things that each of us can do to be part of stopping this massive polluting of our world. Listen to this episode to find out what carbon dioxide and mercury poisoning in our environment is doing to our health and the health of the world's bio-system. And discover what you can do about it. Even changing one or two habits can make a difference for the world and all who live here. America is second only to China when it comes to carbon dioxide emission. And new regulations are actually allowing coal pollution to be pumped into freshwater systems. What we do to our air and our water, we do to everything that lives on the planet. When you eat fish and seafood from the ocean, the mercury they have absorbed gets into your body and stays there. Want to learn more and do something about it?
