We need to understand the mosaic and tapestry of humanity and what God intended us to be and do it based on the cultural context. What we need to do is not belittle how people connect to God but be honest about it and have dialogue without demonizing the reality of who we are. We see each other through cultural context. For me to say I don't see you as a white man/woman or you to say you don’t see me as a black man or see a black woman is to dishonor that God made us different. The key to the blood of Christ is that I don't see you as better or worse than me, I see you equal to me and that's where the "church" hasn't been loud. The blood doesn't just save us it makes us siblings. Heirs and co-heirs with Christ. It's very hard to dishonor what reminds you of yourself. Have uncomfortable conversations because they will lead to healing. Many times when people from different backgrounds come to the fellowship we shouldn’t look at them as outsiders. Maybe the Lord has sent them to grow you. #kingdomminded #faithpodcast #christianpodcast #kingdomculture #racialprofiling #racialjustice #racialequality #racisminamerica #raciallydivided #ministry

Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Serena Williams, Lebron James, Muhammed Ali, Mike Tyson...aren't these people proof that America is truly the land of equal opportunity? When we see the financial success, love and admiration for black athletes, isn't that proof that we are past the horrors of our racist past? Simply stated, the answer to these questions is: no. Anthony Tolliver helps us see that success in professional sports is not the full picture of the opportunities and treatment of minorities in the United States. Anthony Tolliver played basketball at Creighton University before going to a professional basketball career that has taken him from the NBA D-League (now called G-League), to Germany, to the NBA. While in the NBA (at the time of this airing lol), Anthony has played for the: San Antonio Spurs, Portland Trailblazers, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Bobcats, Phoenix Suns, Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings and the Memphis Grizzlies. Anthony is also an entrepreneur. He has played a part in starting many businesses including Active Faith Sports (www.activefaithsports.com) and the Big Blanket (www.bigblanket.com). Anthony is a dedicated husband and active father to his 4 children. You can follow Anthony on Social Media at: @ATolliver44. With racial tension being at an all-time high in the lives of today's young adults, many of us are looking for hope. In a culture that almost forces us to pick sides between majority and minority culture, police or anti-police, conservative or liberal, is there a third option? In this Off Limits conversation, these are the questions Pastor and Author Miles McPherson helps us answer.

Learn to honor that which we have in common. A good leader is intentional in discovering ways to honor others. Here are three thoughts to consider: #1: Storytelling. Learn other's stories and be ready to tell your own #2. Let others know you SEE them. I. First, Slow down and let curiosity guide you. II. Pay attention to others strengths and then be ready to acknowledge them #3. Be willing to explore that there is a difference in knowing what a person looks like or sounds like to knowing who they are. Notes: Kebbi, S. (2019). This week is a big one and the timing couldn’t be better for this episode on getting your SOUL RIGHT. Yes, my new book “Get Your MIND Right” comes out tomorrow. But this episode is much needed. There are protests, looting, violence, we’re in the midst of a pandemic, and we clearly need some divine intervention. Little did I know when I recorded this episode that it would be aired at such a crucial time. Today’s episode is with one of my longest-standing spiritual mentors and closest friends, Pastor Miles McPherson of the Rock Church in San Diego, Ca. Miles McPherson is a former NFL player, he overcame a cocaine addiction, and his testimony has since led over 1.8 million people to Christ. He also has a book called “The Third Option--Hope for a Racially Divided Nation.” Between his “The Third Option” book and the “Get Your Mind Right” book, I can’t think of 2 better books to get your MIND and your SOUL right NOW. I’ve known Miles for over 22-years now and he’s greatly impacted my faith walk since I started listening to him preach way back in 1998. In this episode, Pastor Miles talks about… His transformation from using drugs to surrendering his life to Jesus. What is the “Third Option?” His 6-step process to Get His Mind Right. His 3-step process to Get his Soul Right. FEAR and what we can do about it. Bottom line is that you will be better after listening to this episode. Pastor Miles shares what is on his heart these days and his mission to raise the next generation. Lastly, he shares a special prayer at the end of the episode to solidify that both our minds and souls are singing. Regardless of your faith or beliefs, you don’t want to miss this episode. The more we work and serve alongside people who are different from us, the more readily we see the image of God in everyone. Former San Diego Chargers player Miles McPherson shares how he got mixed up in drugs and the wrong lifestyle in the NFL, but was saved by God when he called out to Him in his lowest moment. Today Miles pastors the Rock Church in San Diego shares that we all have one very important thing in common: God made us in His image, which means we’re all neighbors regardless of skin color. Since he was a little boy, Derek Evans knew he wanted to lend a helping hand to many. After a series of obstacles led him to question his purpose, God helped Derek discover how a small t-shirt company he’d started called Project 615 could change the lives of not only his neighbors at home, but across the world. They all have chapels. They all have chapel before the game. They all have Bible study during the week. And so there was a group on our team, and I watched them and knew that what they had, I wanted.” - Miles McPherson “The big difference for me was having people in my life to hold me accountable and just be there to be an example.” - Miles McPherson, on life after becoming a Christian ”Every race conversation is about us vs. them. And the third option is that we honor what we have in common.” - Miles McPherson “Every time you see someone, rename them neighbor. You know, the greatest commandment is to love God with your heart, mind, and soul. And the second is just like it, to love your neighbor as yourself . . . If we would just start there and talk about people through the lens of a neighbor or brother or sister, we wouldn't say a lot of the things we say.” - Miles McPherson “Anytime there's change in my life, I'm more excited than fearful because I know that God always uses those opportunities to really strengthen us.” - Derek Evans “The beautiful thing about being at rock bottom is that God truly uses that time to mold you, to really speak to you, to really transform your life.” - Derek Evans "As we're praying over [this homeless man], for the first time in my life, I felt God say, 'You're no different than this man you're praying for.'" – Derek Evans “God calls us to different things, and not only does He call for different things, He plants different gifts and talents inside of us that He uses to further His kingdom.” - Derek Evans “We must be the light, as Jesus calls us to be.” - Derek Evans ________________________ Enjoy these videos on Jesus Calling YouTube channel: Audio podcast: https://bit.ly/2uCnNM0 Original Series video podcast: https://bit.ly/2WzFY0O ________________________ Connect with Jesus Calling Instagram Facebook Twitter Pinterest YouTube Jesus Calling Website
6. Ingroup and Outgroup Bias, w/ Abby DyerJoin Abby and Scott as they discuss "innies" and "outies", or rather, ingroups and outgroups. The phrase, "Birds of a feather flock together" is a cliché for a reason. People tend to congregate and group up with people with similar preferences and prejudices. Ingroup bias (or ingroup favoritism) refers to the tendency to favor one’s own group, its members, its characteristics, and its preferences. Outgroup bias includes negative categorizations, feelings, or ideas about people who are not part of our ingroup.Though bias is common in our world, it's actually unnatural in the Kingdom of God as Jesus embodies. Even a cursory reading of the New Testament displays a radical trajectory that goes against the grain of the ingroup/outgroup dualism. And yet, as we consider our relationships and spheres of influence, they are most likely predominantly ingroup. Which means our groups most likely reflect this bias in some ways. This isn’t a guilt trip, but it is a Gospel trip. I.e., this is an area we need to follow Jesus in as he builds his Church.Recommended Resources: Preferences Quiz: Scot McKnight's "Images of Jesus" quiz from his book on interpreting the Bible, "The Blue Parakeet". "I thanked the young man for coming forward, which was a huge step toward healing his heart and mine. We experienced mutual honor and respect. This didn't mean the larger societal problem was fixed, but before society can be healed, the individual conflict within our hearts must be healed." -Miles McPherson With recent shootings in both El Paso & Dayton over the past few weeks, there's no denying that we live in turbulent and divided times. Yet it's imperative, more than ever, to focus on what unites us vs. what separates us. Pastor Miles McPherson (@MilesMcPherson) is a former NFL football player, motivational speaker, and the senior pastor of the Rock Church and Academy (www.sdrock.com), which he founded in 2000, and grown to become one of the largest churches in America, with more than 20,000 weekly attendees in person and online. His new book The Third Option, Hope For A Racially Divided Nation brings a unique perspective to the discussion around race and race relations. In this episode, Pastor Miles & I discuss: His new book - The Third Option, Hope For A Racially Divided Nation. Honoring ourselves and each other Overcoming FEAR - Face the facts, get Educated about the other, be Accountable to affirm one another, and build Relationships recognizing the image of God in everyone Blind spots
Police shootings. Border protests. White nationalist rallies. There’s no denying that we live in a time of racial divide that only seems to be growing. And while it’s easy to direct our focus to these great chasms that separate us, this is actually when it becomes even more imperative to start focusing on what unites us. In this episode of the Tony Robbins Podcast, Tony is sitting down with Pastor Miles McPherson of the Rock Church in San Diego, who leads tens of thousands of diverse individuals in sermon every month. He’s also a former NFL football player, motivational speaker, and he has recently authored The Third Option: Hope for a Racially Divided Nation. Pastor Miles brings a refreshingly different perspective to the discussion around race and race relations, asking the tough questions about how we ended up in this state of tension and turmoil, and what we can do on a psychological and practical level, so that we can initiate real change. Where does racism come from? Are we all biased in some capacity? How do we expose racial divides, and most importantly, how do we move beyond them? These are just some of the questions that Tony and Pastor Miles have a tough, honest conversation about so that we can all find a way to be part of the solution. Because perhaps it’s time for us to all take a step back, stop focusing on what separates us, and star focusing on what we have in common, so that we can all work together to build a more united world.
Issues of race and racial reconciliation are ongoing in many communities. Sean and Scott interview pastor Miles McPherson (The Rock Church in San Diego, California), about his book, The Third Option: Hope for a Racially Divided Nation. Miles refers to himself as a perpetual outsider, as a mixed race individual (Black, white and Chinese ancestry) who identifies as black. Join us as he shares his experience and his solutions to the problems of racial reconciliation. [Show notes, including a full transcript, are available at www.biola.edu/thinkbiblically]
