I recently sold my record collection, do I regret it? Not really, but I do miss hearing some of the tunes that helped shape my life. I play some of those and some new stuff that I really like. It all makes sense to me anyway. A little of this, a little of that, but I think it’s all good stuff!…

Quarantine Conversations in the Age of COVID-19 (featuring Danny Fuentes of Lethal Amounts)

March 2020 will be forever known as the time that life on earth changed and not just for a day or a few days but for forever. In the USA we will often hear about how celebrities and famous athletes are coping. This is not to say they’re not sacrificing or having to cope but what is more important to me are the stories of those who are not part of those elite groups. The playing field has been leveled and now, a good percentage of us, are on the same level. Rich, poor or in-between, we are all figuring this out one day at a time. I believe the first time I became aware of Lethal Amounts was at a show they were promoting a few years ago here in Los Angeles. I bought a shirt at that show and it was one that Lethal Amounts had put out so it became clear that not only were doing more than simply promoting live events. Whether it's live events featuring a wide variety of underground bands, a gallery show you won't find in most art gallieries throughout the world or party events such as Sex Cells or Summertramp, Lethal Amounts has gone from an idea to something uniquely LA. Danny Fuentes grew up in the east LA punk scene and started Lethal Amounts based on a simple idea and it grew from there. Every once in a while there's some controversy with a show he has had in his gallery, which be expected but he's weathered the storm. Even though the pandemic lockdown has presented a challenge, Danny has been able to maintain his vision and for that, Los Angeles should be grateful. Lethal Amounts is located in downtown Los Angeles Lethal Amounts 1226 W 7th St, Los Angeles, CA 90017 (213) 265-7452 Find them online: website https://www.lethalamounts.com Instagram https://www.ebay.com/usr/meowmeowz!/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/LETHALAMOUNTS/ Twitter https://twitter.com/lethalamounts This was recorded BEFORE the death of George Floyd had become international news and the subsequent protests, which is why we did not discuss this topic. Fans of the movie "Pretty in Pink" will immediately feel a sense of deja-vu walking into MeowMeowz! for the first time. While not indentical to the fictional store Trax in the movie, Veronika has created a unique shop that is truly a labor of love. MeowMeowz! is punk rock/new wave-themed thrift store in Pasadena CA, which is part of LA County. The challenge faced by a store such as MeowMeowz! is that while Pasadena can and has made a decision on how to handle the pandemic (Pasadena has their own Department of Health), ultimately they are under the control of the LA County Department of Health. Needless to say, there are many challenges MeowMeowz! face and still has to overcome before they're able to look back on the pandemic shutdown as just a bump in the road. At the time this was recorded, Veronika received word the night before she was able to open and welcome customers back into the store. It may be a little while yet until she can have some live bands play in the store once again but when that happens, it is sure to be a party! MeowMeowz! is located in Pasadena CA MeowMeowz! 2423 E. It was a popular beer and wine bar in North Hollywood/Valley Village and after reaching a milestone, she felt she wanted a change. Fast forward to 2018 and Arelene and her business partners unlocked the doors on a new bar called The Mermaid. This bar is located in downtown Los Angeles in Little Tokyo. The Mermaid is completely different than Bar One and when you walk in, you can really appreciate how fun and unique it is. When the news of the pandemic shutdown was going to happen, everyone felt it would be a couple of weeks. Two weeks turned into just about two and a half months. The start of next season is still TBA. He's currently working on one of my favorite television programs, we bowl in the same league here in Los Angeles and he has quite a few interesting and entertaining stories, which he shares as part of this Quarantine Conversation. March 2020 will be forever known as the time that life on earth changed and not just for a day or a few days but for forever. In the USA we will often hear about how celebrities and famous athletes are coping. This is not to say they're not sacrificing or having to cope but what is more important to me are the stories of those who are not part of those elite groups. The playing field has been leveled and now, a good percentage of us, are on the same level. Rich, poor or in-between, we are all figuring this out one day at a time. Laffy Pants is an interesting character who's work and income has been impacted by the pandemic lockdown. He has lost most, if not all of his work for 2020 and with a landlord who is being completely unrealistic, may possibly lose the residence he shares with his girlfriend and her two kids. Many jobs deemed "non-essential" are performed by those who rely on the income generated from said jobs. You may have seen Laffy at a fair in SoCal channeling the "Sham Wow guy" hawking products "as seen on TV", performing with the Radioactive Chickenheads or Safari So Goody or doing a stunt on TV. The playing field has been leveled and now, a good percentage of us, are on the same level. Rich, poor or in-between, we are all figuring this out one day at a time. The story of Linh and Bert is somewhat unique because her band was in the middle of their European tour when the US stopped all incoming international travel. At first, it wasn't determined whether or not US citizens abroad would be stranded their or would they be able to fly home? Would the airlines even fly? While Linh and the band were scrambling to make the right connections to get home, Bert was here in the Los Angeles area trying to get an idea as to what was happening and if there was anything he was able to do to help. Not in the traditional sense, but in the business sense. I've known him for quite some time because I had booked his old band on a few occasions and then working with me at my old record store. For those unfamiliar with what Pittsfield, Massachusetts is like, it's a former industrial town that has lost most of it's industry over time along with many of the businesses who were supported by good union paychecks and a healthy population. Times have been tough but some determined entrepreneurs have made a go of it. Peydon has taken a small idea to silkscreen some shirts for his former band to a new level. In her free time, Haley serves on a regional council for NARAL in Los Angeles where she helped gather local support for California policy initiatives by hosting community outreach events, canvasing for candidates endorsed by NARAL, and building coalitions with other non-profit organizations. In 2019, Haley helped get California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law two NARAL-sponsored bills: the College Student Right to Access Act (SB 24), which makes California the first state in the nation to expand abortion access to college campuses, and the Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth Act (SB 464), which will save lives by addressing bias in reproductive health care and reducing California’s high rates of pregnancy-related deaths among Black women. Haley hosted an educational event a women-owned independent bookstore in Los Angeles where she discussed the passages of those two pieces legislation and engage activists in NARALs agendas for the 2020 campaign cycle. Haley is a board member on the Homeless prevention law project which ensures that vulnerable populations who utilize social services are being treated with respect and according to the guidelines of the health and human services department. She helped coordinate a book drive for the Jacaranda Foundation, and organization in Malawi that provides free education to 400 orphans who have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS and was able to raised enough money to help build a library for the Malawi community. She also helped organize a book drive on campus to send to the school for students to use. She spent her 2019 summer as a volunteer legal clerk working with low- and no-income families on family law issues like divorce, paternal rights, custody, and domestic violence. She volunteered with the legal aid foundation in Santa Monica to provide free consultation and advice to indigent folks with housing issues. Haley also went to Downey City Council meetings to provide legal observation and reporting on the violence black lives matters (BLM-LA) activists encountered when trying to attend public meetings where they demanded justice for their murdered brothers by the Downey Police. She also attended Los Angeles demonstrations in support of the BLM-LA initiative #JackieLaceyMustGo and demanded accountability from the Los Angeles D.A. who, since taking office in 2012, according to Black Lives Matter LA, has allowed the death of over 400 people killed by law enforcement (or died in custody) in the county during Lacey’s tenure. But she has charged only one man, Luke Liu, a deputy in the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, for shooting an unarmed man while on duty. On her first day of winter break 2019, she supported the National Healthcare Workers union in sharing the difficulty she has had obtaining mental health care services from Kaiser via the #KaiserDontDeny movement. Haley also volunteers at a health care clinic where she runs interference between patients and zealots who seeks to bully people from accessing healthcare. Haley applied for law school while working at a rehabilitation center which exposed her to the unscrupulous world of drug treatment providers and the abuse addicts experience. Because of the shady business practices she witnessed, she was determined to become legally empowered to defend the vulnerable and make the world more just. This summer, she will be doing exactly that while she works as a volunteer legal clerk for a Federal Judge adjudicating employee claims against employers. She is committed to service and has taken the steps to ensure she can be an active community member and leader in ensuring Los Angeles achieved equity for all of its people. She has dedicated her life to helping the most vulnerable populations. She hopes to work for a non-profit focused on women and children’s rights when she graduates to ensure a fairer and more equitable world where people are able to make the best choices for themselves so that they may live full and productive lives. ~AJ Murillo & Jennifer Marie"* For more information on how you can help or to seek assistance, please see the following links below: https://thesidewalkproject.org/ https://www.groundgamela.org/ https://www.dsa-la.org/ http://www.cangress.org https://www.akpress.org/ https://fosterreprohealth.org/ https://ciyja.org/covid19/ Recorded by AJ Murillo Recorded April 1, 2020 Edited by AJ Murillo & Andy Poncherello "Marty's Got the MRSA" by The Poncherellos (unavailable nowhere)
