Mitrice Richardson, a 24-year-old psychology graduate, disappeared on September 17, 2009, after being released from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station in Los Angeles, following her arrest for failing to pay an $89 restaurant bill and possessing a small amount of marijuana. Exhibiting erratic behavior suggestive of a mental health crisis, possibly undiagnosed bipolar disorder, Mitrice was released at 12:28 a.m. without her phone, wallet, or car, despite her mother's plea to hold her until morning. Last seen alive resting in a resident's backyard six hours later, her skeletal remains were found 11 months later in a remote canyon, with her clothing 700 feet away and no clear cause of death determined. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department faced criticism for releasing her, mishandling her remains, and obstructing the coroner's investigation, prompting lawsuits and allegations of foul play, though her death was ruled undetermined, not a homicide. Her case led to policy changes for missing persons and mental health evaluations, but her family continues to seek justice, believing she was murdered.   Branch of Hope for May 2025: The JED Foundation - Jedfoundation.org   Chapters: 00:00 Welcome to the Dark Oak 01:40 Mitrice Richardson 1:28:20 The Brand of Hope - JED Foundation     Sources: Suspicious death: Mitrice Richardson | Malibu, CA | Uncovered. “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” released on January 10, 2025, is the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2018 heist thriller “Den of Thieves.” Directed by Christian Gudegast, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Paul T. Scheuring, the film reunites stars Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr., reprising their roles as the relentless Los Angeles Sheriff's Department detective Nicholas “Big Nick” O'Brien and the cunning thief Donnie Wilson. This installment shifts the action from the gritty streets of Los Angeles to the sun-drenched, glamorous locales of Europe, delivering a high-stakes diamond heist narrative inspired by the real-life 2003 Antwerp diamond robbery. Produced by Lionsgate, alongside Diamond Film Productions, G-BASE, and Tucker Tooley Entertainment, the film blends tactical crime drama with a newfound lightness, trading the original's brooding intensity for a more playful, buddy-cop dynamic. The story picks up with Big Nick, still reeling from personal turmoil, including a recent divorce, as he tracks Donnie across Europe. Donnie, now entangled with the notorious Panther mafia, is orchestrating a daring heist targeting the world's largest diamond exchange in Nice, France. The plot kicks off with a pulse-pounding opening in Antwerp, where Donnie and the Panther Crew, led by the enigmatic Jovanna (Evin Ahmad), steal a rare red diamond, setting the stage for a cat-and-mouse game. Nick, gone rogue from his department, pursues Donnie not just to apprehend him but with a surprising twist of intent—teaming up for the heist. Their unlikely alliance, cemented over drunken shawarma and banter about French cuisine, injects the film with a shaggy charm reminiscent of early “Fast & Furious” films, though it's layered with Gudegast's signature procedural detail.Spanning 144 minutes, “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” luxuriates in its slow-burn buildup, dedicating much of its runtime to the meticulous planning of the diamond center break-in. From camera cycles to fake identities, the film revels in heist logistics, punctuated by tension from vengeful ex-crew members and a Sardinian mobster demanding the stolen diamond's return. The payoff arrives in the second hour with a gripping infiltration sequence and a standout car chase through the French Alps, evoking Michael Mann's “Heat” and John Frankenheimer's “Ronin.” Butler's Nick, hanging off Donnie's getaway car, firing at pursuers, anchors the visceral action, shot with a metallic realism by cinematographer Terry Stacey using Arri Alexa cameras. The cast expands with strong supporting turns from Evin Ahmad as a potential love interest for Nick, Salvatore Esposito as a mafia heavy, and Meadow Williams reprising her role from the first film. Filmed across Tenerife, the Canary Islands, and the UK from April to July 2023, the production transformed Santa Cruz streets into a French diamond district, enhancing the film's European flair. Kevin Matley's score replaces Cliff Martinez's from the original, adding a fresh sonic pulse to the Mediterranean setting.Critically, the film sits at a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, lauded for Butler's charisma and the thrilling set pieces, though some, like Rolling Stone's David Fear, critique its convoluted plot and overlong runtime. Grossing $57.3 million worldwide against a $40 million budget, it topped the U.S. box office with a $15 million opening weekend. Now streaming on Netflix as of March 20, 2025, “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” refines its predecessor's macho ethos into a more elegant, if familiar, thriller—leaving the door ajar for a third installment, already greenlit, set in Africa.

Episode 2262: Jessica Pishko explains how the Democrats Built Trump's Police State

Not everyone, especially mainstream Democrats, are going to agree with Jessica Pishko on this one. In Liberties, she argues that it was the Democrats who “built Trump's army”. It was Joe Biden, she claims, who built up the very law enforcement regime that Trump is now weaponizing. So, in Pishko's mind, the Democrats have as much responsibility for the Mad Max police state which Trump is now unleashing now on America. Here are the 5 takeaways in our conversation with Pishko:* Democrats invested in police despite lack of support: According to Pishko, Democrats under Biden significantly invested in law enforcement (adding 100,000 police officers), but this did not translate into police support for Democrats. She argues police overwhelmingly supported Trump in both elections despite these investments.* Police unions backed Trump: Police unions, which traditionally didn't endorse presidential candidates, explicitly supported Trump in his campaigns. Pishko finds this paradoxical since Republicans typically don't support unions, while Democrats (like Biden) protected police pensions and increased funding.* "Defund the police" aftermath: Pishko suggests the 2020 protests led to a backlash where police became more aligned with Trump. She argues Biden's attempt to distance himself from "defund the police" by increasing funding didn't win police support but may have alienated progressive supporters.* Reduced oversight under Trump: Pishko claims Trump has removed checks on police power, citing examples of him pardoning convicted police officers and ending Department of Justice investigations into police brutality. She believes oversight will now need to come from local and state levels.* Structural challenges to police reform: Pishko argues that the structure of policing itself resists reform, pointing to examples like the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department where, despite multiple oversight mechanisms, problems persist. She notes that Black officers are leaving the profession, suggesting systemic issues that individual "good officers" cannot overcome.Jessica Pishko is a journalist and lawyer with a JD from Harvard Law School and an MFA from Columbia University. She has been reporting on the criminal legal system for a decade, with a focus on the political power of sheriffs since 2016. In addition to her newsletter Posse Comitatus, her writings have been featured in The New York Times, Politico, Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, The Appeal, Slate, and Democracy Docket. She has been awarded journalism fellowships from the Pulitzer Center and Type Investigations and was a 2022 New America Fellow. A Devastating Loss in Los Angeles In 2016, Sergeant Steve Owen, a 29-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was murdered in cold blood while responding to a burglary call in Lancaster, California. This was no ordinary loss; Steve was known for his dedication, his compassion, and his leadership in the community. In a tragic series of events, a career criminal ambushed and executed him, shattering not only his family but also the entire community he had spent nearly three decades serving. Her Los Angeles Sheriff Husband Was Murdered. Retired Cop tells the story.  We covered her story in platforms like Medium and Newsbreak. On October 5, 2016, Steve responded to a burglary in progress, an ordinary call he had answered countless times before. But this time, he was ambushed. As Steve attempted to apprehend the suspect, the assailant shot him once in the head, then stood over his fallen body and fired four more rounds, ensuring there would be no chance of survival. Steve's partner, who arrived shortly after, attempted to save him and apprehend the assailant, but the suspect took Steve's patrol car, attempted a getaway, and later fled on foot, even taking two teenagers hostage before his eventual capture. Steve's murder left his colleagues and the community in mourning and robbed his family of a beloved husband, father, and friend. The interview with Tania Owen is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. This is part two of a great conversation with John James Santangelo. Are “Affirmations” a type of NLP? Christians do this all the time and not even think about. “I am in Christ.” “I am an overcomer.” “I am blessed.” “I am prosperous. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, etc.” You have a training center in Los Angeles where you hold these classes. I believe I read it is 12 days long and is a total of 120 hours. What do your students learn during that time and what certifications do they leave with? As we get ready to close, is there anything you would like to say to our listeners that we have not covered? John, this is all so interesting. I could talk to you for hours about this. If someone has some questions, as I'm sure they will, how can they get in touch with you or your organization? You also said you had a free gift for our listeners today, is that right? I'll put links to all of this in the show notes below. Folks, life is made up of and consists on a series of decisions. Decisions you make on a daily basis. What clothes to wear… what to eat for lunch… who to marry… what house to buy… what job should you apply for, etc. Your Faith is definitely based on a decision. Your decision to trust in Christ, etc. Quality decision can bring a greater quality to your life. That is what we are talking about today with John James Santangelo.  I believe you received something today that will benefit you down the road. Amen! John, it is a blessing to have you join us today, brother! I've been looking forward to our conversation! First question I always start with is this… other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is John James Santangelo?” Let's start with this… I know you started at age 15 as a professional magician – I've always been fascinated with that profession. I'm nowhere near a professional status, but I was able to keep my grandkids entertained… I'm always picking up another illusion package along the way from time to time… How did this impact you and did this influence your interest in the NLP line of work? Now, NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming.  Some folks may think that is hypnosis or mind-control or something. But it's not… can you share with us what it is – in layman's terms? Most people think it is a form of getting people to buy things… used in sale and marketing or  the “law of attraction” in relationships and things like that. But it is used in a wide variety of things. Can you share a few of those with us? Most people probably never thought they were being exposed to NLP in those examples. Like weight loss or leadership skills or coaching programs… How does NLP help in, say “weight loss?” Quality decision can bring a greater quality to your life. Ralph welcomes Pulitzer Prize winning reporter, Gretchen Morgenson, co-author of “These Are the Plunderers: How Private Equity Runs – And Wrecks – America,” where they name names in this “heads we win, tails you lose” system of predatory capitalism.Gretchen Morgenson is the senior financial reporter for the NBC News Investigative Unit. A former stockbroker, she won the Pulitzer Prize in 2002 for her “trenchant and incisive” reporting on Wall Street. Previously at the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal,” she and coauthor Joshua Rosner wrote the bestseller Reckless Endangerment: How Outsized Ambition, Greed, and Corruption Led to Economic Armageddon about the mortgage crisis. Their latest book is These Are the Plunderers: How Private Equity Runs—and Wrecks—America. The way corporate criminals get their way is by trying to make things too complex and too abstract for your daily lives. But when Gretchen [Morgenson] talks about these plunderers, and let's call them “predatory capitalists”, don't think that you're not being affected— whether your loved ones are patients in nursing homes, whether you're workers being laid off, whether you're consumers being gouged for drug or healthcare prices, whether your community's going to be hollowed out because the company that was doing okay was taken over by these vultures and closed down after they extracted the wealth.Ralph NaderIt's interesting now that David Rubenstein is retired [from the Carlyle Group], he's a philanthropist. This is what these wealthy people do once they've finished their careers and made so much money. They become philanthropists… We've all read about David Rubenstein and Steve Schwarzman and Leon Black and Henry Kravis. We read about them constantly. They are always lauded for their brilliance and their billionaire status. What we just don't hear about are the people on the other side of their transactions.Gretchen Morgenson, co-author of “These Are The Plunderers.”The disappointing thing about the Justice Department is that when they bring these cases against the companies that are doing Medicare fraud (like in the Manor Care situation), they don't move up the corporate ladder to the owner of the company. The Justice Department does the work on the particular company that is owned by private equity, but they don't go up the ladder. And that has a way of allowing the firms—like Carlyle in the Manor Care case— to escape scrutiny and to escape accountability. So that would be an ideal thing to change.Gretchen Morgenson co-author of “These Are The Plunderers.”In Case You Haven't Heard 1. Amid the debt limit fight, progressives are calling for President Biden to invoke the 14th amendment, which they believe would allow Biden to bypass the Republican House and raise the debt limit without concessions like adding further work requirements to public benefits. In a press conference by the Senate progressives, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania said "This is the whole reason why the 14th Amendment exists, & we need to be prepared to use it. And, if our unelected Supreme Court Justices try to block the use of the 14th amendment and blow up our economy, that's on them.” However, POLITICO reports that the administration is privately telling progressives to stand down. Instead, the White House seems more interested in negotiating with Speaker McCarthy, even if that means caving to outrageous Republican demands.2. As the Writers Guild strike grinds on – at a cost of $30 million per day according to Deadline – the  Screen Actors Guild is now on the verge of their own strike. Last week, SAG-AFTRA's National Board voted unanimously to ask members for strike authorization, and the Daily Beast reported that SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher urged members to “make three a charm with an emphatic ‘yes' for a strike authorization vote!” adding that to do so would be “an unprecedented show of solidarity.” An actor's strike against the studios has not happened since 1980.3. Last week, Senator Bernie Sanders introduced the Healthy Families Act of 2023, which would guarantee 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave. This bill features a companion in the House, led by Rep. Rosa DeLauro, and carries the support of 122 members of the House and Senate. Sanders is quoted saying “It is time to end this absurdity...It is time Congress passed this legislation to ensure workers receive the basic dignity and benefits that they deserve.” The introduction of this legislation comes on the heels of the reintroduction of a Medicare for All bill in this Congress.4. A damning new report in the Wall Street Journal indicates that “Jeffrey Epstein discovered that Bill Gates had an affair with a Russian bridge player” and later used this knowledge to attempt to threaten the Microsoft co-founder. The report goes on to say that “at the time, Epstein was trying to set up a multibillion-dollar charitable fund with JPMorgan...[which] hinged on securing support from Gates.” When this money was not forthcoming, Epstein resorted to blackmail. This gives the public our clearest idea yet as to the nuts and bolts of the Epstein criminal enterprise.5. POLITICO is reporting on a rumor concerning Senator Dianne Feinstein, Representative Adam Schiff, and the Pelosi family. The former Speaker herself has endorsed Schiff in the upcoming California Senate primary and has long groomed him as a political protege. He currently holds a $15 million advantage over his nearest opponent. Yet, if Feinstein – who has appeared deeply addled in recent public appearances – were to resign, Governor Newsom would have the opportunity to appoint a Senator to the vacant seat, and has pledged to appoint a Black woman. Rep. Barbara Lee, a progressive Black congresswoman representing the Bay Area, is among the candidates to replace Feinstein, and would therefore have a strong chance of being appointed. Per the report, Nancy Corinne Prowda, Pelosi's eldest child, is a top aide to Senator Feinstien, and a “Pelosi family confidant” insinuated that she is angling to keep Feinstein in her seat, not for the benefit of Californians, but for the benefit of Adam Schiff.  6. The LA Times reports that “Nearly three dozen deputies have been ordered to come in for questioning, show their tattoos and give up the names of any other deputies similarly sporting ink connecting them to…the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's…deputy gangs.” This demand came in a letter from county Inspector General Max Huntsman to 35 deputies suspected of being members of either the Executioners or the Banditos, two of the most notorious among these police gangs. Huntsman is quoted saying “The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department conducted incomplete internal affairs investigations into the Banditos and Executioners, failing to identify all members…California's new gang law addresses discrimination based on race and gender and gives inspectors general enhanced authority to collect evidence. We're using that authority to complete the investigations by directing deputies to show their tattoos and tell us who else has them.”7. The Sierra Club is currently in the midst of a labor battle. The New Republic reports that, in an attempt to resolve their budget shortfall, the group has announced “massive layoffs,” the scale of which still remains unclear.  This announcement set off a “fractious battle” between the top leadership and the Progressive Workers Union, which has two bargaining units representing nearly 400 Sierra Club employees around the country. Thus far union has filed two unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board; the first “accuses the Club of failing to provide necessary information for bargaining,” and another alleging that “management is violating its collective bargaining agreement and is bargaining in bad faith.”8. Democracy Now! reports that conservative, US-backed Ecuadoran president Guillermo Lasso has “dissolved the opposition-led National Assembly in a move widely seen as an effort to block efforts to impeach him.” Lasso dissolved the assembly as it held its first hearing on corruption and embezzlement allegations against Lasso. Lasso invoked a never-before-used constitutional power allowing him to “rule by decree” until new elections are held.9. In an almost unbelievable story, Live Science is reporting that Orcas have “sunk 3 boats in Europe and appear to be teaching others to do the same.” The piece goes on to say that scientists believe the attacks are coordinated, and began following an orca experiencing a "critical moment of agony." Further, they believe “the behavior is spreading among the population through social learning.” This is a stark reminder that we as a species impact our environment and that, sometimes, there are consequences. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Jared Fishman, Suspected Racist. After working in the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice for fourteen years, where he handled some of the nation's most significant cases of police misconduct, hate crimes and human trafficking, Fishman founded the Justice Innovation Lab, an organization that uses a data-informed approach to build a more effective and fair justice system. We'll discuss his newly published book, Fire on the Levee: The Murder of Henry Glover and the Search for Justice after Hurricane Katrina. Glover, a black male NOLA native, was shot in the back by a White police officer (David Warren). Other officials then burned a vehicle with Glover's body in the rear. Suspicousy, Glover's skull disappeared. Many aspect of Fishman's book reveal truth about the System of White Supremacy. However, the portion of the book that describes the pornographic stash of high resolution, "unofficial" photographs of Henry Glover's body and likens them to lynching postcards of the early 20th century is especially revealing. Gus T. asked if Fishman was aware of the recent $28.8 million judgement against the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department for callously trading pictures of Kobe Bryant's charred remains. #DelectableNegro #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

In a press conference Monday, Los Angeles Sheriff Robert Luna announced that charges would be brought against 65-year-old Carlos Medina, the husband of O'Connell's housekeeper. Prior to the arrest, there was a standoff between the subject and law enforcement in the city of Torrance, about a 45-minute drive southwest from Hacienda Heights, where O'Connell was found dead. Police discovered O'Connell with “at least” one gunshot wound to his upper body while in his bedroom, Luna said. Luna said there was no evidence of a “forced entry” or “burglary” and added that no firearm was found at the scene. A native of Ireland, O'Connell was named a bishop by Pope Francis in 2015. He ministered to immigrants, the poor, and victims of gang violence for 45 years in the South Los Angeles area. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253690/breaking-arrest-made-in-murder-of-bishop-david-o-connell Wisconsin voters are set to head to the polls today to vote for a new state Supreme Court justice in a nonpartisan primary. Though turnout in Wisconsin judicial elections is generally low, pro-life advocates say this election will play a major role in determining whether unborn children will continue to receive protection in Wisconsin, a state that currently has a near-total ban on abortion in place. Pro-choice groups within and outside Wisconsin have identified the state Supreme Court race as a key one in their attempts to get the state's abortion ban overturned. Wisconsin's governor and Attorney General announced a lawsuit last year to attempt to overturn the law, arguing that it has been superseded by subsequent legislation and cannot be enforced. Pro-life advocates worry that should the state Supreme Court obtain a pro-choice majority, the state's pre-Roe ban could be thrown out, as happened last year in neighboring Michigan. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253691/wisconsin-judicial-elections-could-affect-future-of-state-abortion-ban-pro-lifers-say Today, the Church celebrates Saint Peter Damian, a Benedictine monk who strove to purify the Church during the early years of its second millennium. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-peter-damian-154 The Church also celebrates Saint Robert Southwell, SJ an English Roman Catholic Jesuit priest and one of the 40 martyrs of England & Wales murdered during the English anti-Catholic Reformation. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-robert-southwell-739

Dr. Roberto Mezzina headed the Dipartimento di Salute Mentale in Trieste until his retirement in late 2019.  Both of the California delegations that visited Trieste (in 2017 and 2019) were graciously welcomed by Dr. Mezzina and his staff in our quest to understand the culture and principles that make this system so noteworthy.   Within those two delegations were representatives from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department (LASD), harboring a deep desire to embrace a more human-focused posture on how to come alongside people with mental illness, both in the county jail system and in the community.  The Department is also interested to lean into guiding principles of the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights – which is espoused by the Italian system – as a framework to guide how people with mental illness are cared for in our society. In April 2022, Dr. Mezzina was invited to Los Angeles at the behest of the L.A. Sheriff's Foundation to come alongside some specialized divisions in the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department:  the Homeless Outreach Services Team (HOST) and the Mental Evaluation Team.    Dr. Mezzina also toured the remarkable program that was initially started in 2016 at Twin Towers to provide a more caring and therapeutic environment for the most seriously mentally ill patients in the jail.  Under the leadership of the Sheriff's Department and the Department of Health Services Correctional  Mental Health division, this program, described in an article which appeared in the Christian Science Monitor,  has expanded.  (See website created by the Mental Health Assistants for more information about this innovation.)Dr. Mezzina's visit to Los Angeles coincided with the filming of an episode of the CNN documentary series, “Life with Lisa Ling.” This episode (to be aired in the show's next season) will focus upon the mental health crisis in Los Angeles County.  The producers and host of this show participated in some of the outreach and engagement conducted by the LASD HOST Team and Dr. Mezzina.   This interview was conducted in person in the podcast studio at Verdugo Sound on the way to the airport.  Dr. Mezzina also provides an update on the changing political climate in Trieste – a topic that was introduced in a podcast interview that can be found in Season Two, Episode Seven.
