SELF-MADE BOSS: Advice, Hacks and Lessons from Small Business Owners - Jackie Reses & Lauren Weinberg

    Winning On Main Street

Jackie and Lauren worked together at Yahoo and later at Square, where they spent a lot of time talking to small business owners. During the pandemic, they started discussing how during an economic downturn, a lot of people generally start their own businesses, and wouldn't it be great if they could package together what they had learned working with small businesses. This idea was what led to the authors researching and writing Self-Made Boss. But both Jackie and Lauren had significant backgrounds in small business long before they conceived of writing this book. Jackie relates in this episode how when she was growing up, her parents and grandparents owned small businesses and she started her own small businesses in high school and then college. After college, Jackie transitioned to Wall Street and spent time creating financial products and working on mergers and acquisitions. She then moved into technology, first at Yahoo and then at Square, and then she left to start her own business once again. While at Square she was involved in the lending and banking aspect. One of the most emotional parts of the journey for a small business owner is when they receive credit or capital to fund their business. Those stories that Jackie and Lauren heard working with small business owners inspired them to write Self-Made Boss.  The ideal reader for the book is anyone who is thinking about or currently running a small business. The book is designed as part starter-kit, part encyclopedia. Each chapter covers a specific area of running a business that the entrepreneur may need to learn or brush up on, such as Creating a Business Plan, Legal Matters, Brand Building and Marketing, Hiring and HR, and Growth and Scale. But each chapter is also sprinkled with real-life stories of fascinating entrepreneurs whose tales will resonate with small business owners and inspire them to continue on their journey.  The authors know from experience that it can feel lonely running your own business and Self-Made Boss aims to show small business owners that they are not alone and that many of the challenges they face are shared by other entrepreneurs. Through the book, they package together insights and lessons on how to overcome these challenges. Listen to Jackie and Lauren in this entertaining and fascinating discussion and you will undoubtedly want to read Self-Made Boss.  Resources Shared: Self-Made Boss by Jackie Reses and Lauren WeinbergSelfMadeBoss.comThryv

Today we're mixing things up and learning from Tash Todd Williams, founder of digital marketing agency Word of Mouth Collective. I've known Tash for circa 10 years now and have had the absolute pleasure of watching her journey from launching a fashion publication that she exited before she was 24, to today running a successful digital agency with a special love for female founders and entrepreneurs. Today she's coming on to share part of that journey and a bunch of interesting tips and advice for early-stage bootstrapped founders including where she sees a lot of small businesses go wrong, the challenges that founders have in today's landscape post iOS apple updates when it comes paid marketing and when a small business owner should actually be looking to engage an agency. One thing we often hear on the podcast is that founders regret having spent on an agency too early on in their journey. In this episode, we explore the best time for bootstrapped founders to actually make this move and start working with an agency. At which stage in the journey it would pay off. And this is all about looking at tipping points of scale. There's one scenario where you've just raised and you have a lot of capital so that's totally separate. When you have strong KPIs to reach and the capital to get there, it makes a lot of sense to hire an agency. It's not these founders, but rather the bootstrapped founders we often hear about regretting investing in an agency early on. At this point, it becomes more about which stage of business you will be ready. If you're running lean and doing this alone, you can come to a tipping point where you do not have the time and resources to upskill yourself and you have too many moving parts in the business. This would be the point to consider outsourcing to an agency. As Tash says, they're not in the business to bankrupt anybody. Audit yourself, audit where the business is at, and based on that draw conclusions if this actually makes sense for you. So many gems in here, I know you're going to love her! And btw, are we friends on TikTok? I'm having so much fun on that platform, Id love to connect and see what you're creating on there too. Find me at @dooneroisin in all the places. Does hearing about robots or robotic technology trigger doomsday images of nonhuman entities taking over with unbridled power? That fear is often rooted in the unknown. And that's why technologists like Dean Hamilton are so important. Part debunking and part educational, it also explains why this episode is one of our most downloaded. Dean is a Partner and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Wilson & Perumal. With over 30 years of experience, he has a firsthand account of the evolution of software technologies and says, “We live in a golden age of no-programming tech” - one of which is Robotic Process Automation (RPA). In this episode, Dean explains what RPA is, how it falls along a spectrum of intelligent automation tools, and why it can be incredibly useful in streamlining repetitive back-office tasks. It's the boring humdrum of these repetitive tasks where our operations are most prone to errors. Errors that lead to lost profit, angry customers, and sullied reputations. Get in on this game-changing technology and gain efficiencies. It's not as scary or complicated as it may seem.

In This Episode:  The Good Eggs Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that works hard to identify childhood support programs, organizations, and families facing challenges in order to provide care and assistance. Once an organization is 'EGGED," it will receive the help that is needed. “EGGINGS” can take various forms, such as offering jackets/hats/gloves, offering school supplies to a group of students, or even helping with local children's events for those in need. Sandy holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Detroit Mercy and has taught morality, ethics, and social justice courses at a private high school in Michigan.  In addition to her teaching career, she has taught, developed, and implemented programs and curricula that are focused on helping children realize the importance of living altruistic lives centered on love.  The Good Eggs series is her contribution to supporting children as they learn about virtues, diversity, and service – essential concepts to integrate into their lives as they grow into Good Eggs! Sandy is also the Founder and President of The Good Eggs Foundation, which is dedicated to helping children in need. The Foundation's outreach can take many forms, including monetary assistance, educational resources, and basic needs. Part of the net proceeds from book purchases go directly to the Foundation. Improving quality of life at a local, state, national, and even a global level is key to helping others grow and succeed! Sandy shares the story of how she came up with the Good Eggs children books. We talk about how the foundation does "Eggings" and how they select the recipients and needs that they meet. Things like providing baby monitors, helping out families who have fallen on hard times, provided bedding for habitat for humanity, and about 30 more to date. The foundation is primarily funded through book sales. We discuss the animation projects for the Good Eggs on YouTube. Since 1974, and the passing of The Equal Credit Opportunity Act, American women have unfettered access to banking. Despite nearly 50 years of financial female firsts, women remain largely absent from high finance. Today, we sit down with Brooke Lively, president at Cathedral Capital to discuss why so few women are in finance, why she prefers to hire mothers, and the six key numbers your firm needs to understand to increase your bottom line. So often women in male-dominated sectors like finance and law feel intimidated and hit obstacles their male counterparts will never encounter. Fed up, Brooke forged her own path. She holds an MBA in Investments and Corporate Finance. And after graduation, built a 7- figure company in under 2 years. As a Chartered Financial Analyst, she and her team work with Hall of Famers, INC 5000 businesses, CEOs, and Small Business Owners to help turn businesses into profitable companies.  What's in This Episode? Who is Brooke Lively? How do you run a firm by the numbers to increase profitability? Only 7% of female MBA graduates in finance - making Brooke a unicorn - what drew her to this path? Why are most of the staff at Cathedral Capital women who work part time? How can female lawyers get recognized for partner? What six key financial numbers does every firm owner need to know? What number is essential to knowing the health of your firm? What is the 'profit finder' and how can it help your firm?

Smiling is not going to help you feel confident in video, but here's a few things that will. Keep in mind that confidence is a result, it's an outcome. Confidence isn't something you have to have before you take action, it's a result of you believing you performed that action well.Once you create a pattern of performing at something well, your confidence will grow. Every single time you go Live on Facebook and engage with your audience, your confidence will grow in your capabilities of that action. Here are my three strategies to summon confidence on-camera…It all starts with one simple thing… preparation. It is my unshakable opinion that feeling prepared is the KEY to feeling confident. Body Language, this is the key to appearing confident.Your energy, this is the piece of you that will keep your audience coming back for more. The biggest misconception today is that you begin with confidence. That you must have confidence to succeed. Friend, this could not be further from the truth. You have every single thing that you need, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I began speaking on-camera  long before I felt confident in doing so. Allow yourself to start and improve along the way.

When I started out in B2B sales as a young man in my 20s, I learned all I could about selling techniques. I learned all the classic sales techniques, even things like the “Ben Franklin” close. For many years I struggled as I tried to implement a lot of techniques that sales trainers taught. I memorized scripts, learned about how to close people with techniques like scarcity and urgency, but it was an uphill battle. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the prospect's whole demeanor change in front of me as I asked for the sale. Frustrating and unproductive to say the least. It wasn't until I learned how powerful our beliefs are in driving our actions that I saw what was missing and why I experienced such resistance at the closing stage. When I learned more about beliefs, I realized that even beliefs are not the strongest tool to get ourselves or others to act. That missing ingredient is identity. In this Podcast Episode i'll be talking about...1. How do you create that identity shift? In this episode learn why Adam and Eve were impacted by how Eve's identity was shifted!2. The secret to powerfully shifting identity. It's important to remember that people don't like change. They will resist anything that challenges their current beliefs.
