[Part 1 of 2] At fourteen years old, Christian Picciolini was lost, confused and looking for guidance. If he’d been approached by a footy coach or a skateboarder - he reckons he would have followed their lead. But instead, he was recruited by the leader of the notorious Chicago area skinheads, and found himself deeply entwined in a violent, racist and dangerous neo-nazi hate group. Today, however, Christian spends every day of his life trying to undo the harm he caused, and to help other young people disengage from hate groups. So how did Christian go from being the lead propagandist for an extremist organisation to actively working to bring them down? It’s a story you’ll have to hear to believe - and it’s a story that’s more important today than ever before. Listen to Part 2 of this conversation here. You can follow Christian on Instagram here And learn more about his books and the work he does, here THE END BITS: Listen to more No Filter interviews here and follow us on Instagram here. Today, Danny Hurst sits down with Rachel Creeger, a talented comedian, writer, director, speaker, podcaster and actress. Rachel explains how, despite being from an Orthodox Jewish background, which traditionally discourages stand-up comedy, she became one. She shares how she fell in love with comedy through her family’s love of jokes and how it helped her at school where she was bullied and struggled with being neurodiverse. A serious illness didn’t stop her either and when she received a cash windfall; she used it to run away to the theatre and fulfil her dream. She also shares her experience of growing up as an Orthodox Jew in an area where the National Front was very prevalent. KEY TAKEAWAYS Most successful careers involve taking on multiple roles, so be willing to learn. Pursuing creative interests often requires you to take risks and prioritise personal happiness over traditional career paths. Do as much as you can within your current circumstances to follow your passion. Everything you do builds skills for your creative future. You don´t have to be famous to write something or act in a play. Personal challenges and unexpected circumstances can be transformed into opportunities. Comedians who used music, e.g. Jasper Carrott and Victoria Wood, really shaped comedy in the 70s. Dealing with the National Front was especially hard for Rachel´s older relatives who had fled persecution to find safety in the UK. BEST MOMENTS “When someone introduces me as a comedian. I get a little, tiny glow." “I said, ‘I'm going to run away to join the theatre,’ and that's what I did.” “My material isn't niche. It's just another perspective on the same stuff.” “Skinheads would stop you in the street and give you a hard time… it was sort of my normal reality.” “It was important to also be part of what was happening in Britain and in London, because that's where we were growing up.” “One minute our Sabbaths were these quite casual affairs, and then they became very strict.” “I had one of those retro-antisemitic experiences.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.rachelcreeger.com https://www.jewtalkintome.com/ https://podstatus.com/podcasts/leaving-erinsborough-327103 https://www.instagram.com/upstairsatadamandeve HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. A writer and host of pub quizzes across London, he has travelled extensively and speaks several languages. He has been a consultant for exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum and Natural History Museum in London as well as presenting accelerated learning seminars across the UK.

„Sluníčko a sandálky“ nevyhledává ani v hudbě.

This is an excerpt from a patrons-only episode. To hear the full episode and dozens more like it, visit Patreon.com/LoveMessagePod. In this patrons episode we begin a reading series on a book we mentioned in the last episode: ‘Resistance Through Rituals: Youth Subcultures in Post-War Britain', edited by Stuart Hall and Tony Jefferson. This collection, first published in 1975, is a classic of the cultural studies reading list, but upon revisiting it for this show Jeremy and Tim found its content extremely pertinent to the project of this podcast. So, in true LITM style, why have one episode when you can have many? As such today we embark on a deep reading of the volume, starting with the first three chapters. Jeremy and Tim give a historiography of Stuart Hall's analytic method, tying in their own journeys through the academy, before discussing three interesting UK subcultures: Teddy Boys, Mods, and Skinheads. We hear about amphetamines, ska, racism, class, big lapels, Peaky Blinders, cut-price suits and the first teenagers in this journey through mid-century Britain. Stay tuned, much more to follow next time. Tracklist: Bill Haley - Rock Around the Clock The Who - The Seeker Symarip - Skinhead Moonstomp

Today i sat with author of the book BROOKLYN SKINHEAD, LOU MORALES. a memoir. One mans journey from fear and self hatred to love and faith. It's an incredible story from being a violent skinhead in sunset park Brooklyn and the LES of Manhattan. To finding GOD and turning his life around to become an overseas Christian missionary.

Former Nazi skinhead and current FIREFIGHTER, Christian Picciolini has worked for the last two decades converting over 600 individuals from white supremacist groups, street gangs, and terrorist organizations. His first book, White American Youth, documents his early days as one of the first Nazi skinheads in America to form a band and tour Europe. He quickly rose in prominence among "CASH: Chicago Area Skin Heads" (later rebranded as the Northern Hammerskins chapter) by creating propaganda for the movement. Christian speaks about those days, what made him leave the movement forever, how he learned to become an instrument in Breaking Hate (His second book), his love of music, his band, and his current career as a FIREFIGHTER!
A natural storyteller and leader, Kory Flowers has over two decades working some of the country's most dangerous gangs and extremist groups. He's an expert in white supremacist organizations and his knowledge comes straight from working one of the country's hotbeds of activity. Kory talks about snapping pics of a "fresh cut" Nazi skin, Wade Michael Page, at a concert in North Carolina. Months later, that same Nazi opened fire at a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin killing 6 citizens. We talk about reggae music, the power of crime-fighting leadership, his days in SWAT, having a positive mindset, and the importance of sharing intel through his connection with "S.I.N.: Skinhead Intelligence Network," a collective of law enforcement representatives formed by Mat Browning (Episode #29 guest) with the function to share regional information on violent white supremacist.

"Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead (Story as Told to Jody M. Roy, Ph.D.)" is a gripping narrative of Frank Meeink's journey into the depths of the neo-Nazi underworld in America, and his subsequent emergence from a life filled with hatred and substance abuse. Growing up in a violent environment in South Philadelphia set Frank on a path towards hatred, and his struggles with addiction left him vulnerable to the influence of a few skinhead gang recruiters. By the age of 16, he had risen to prominence as a leading figure among skinhead gangs on the East Coast, and by 18, he was serving a lengthy prison sentence. Inside prison, his interactions with minorities led him to question his long-held prejudices. Tune in to discover what led him to renounce his neo-Nazi group and eventually embrace Judaism. Frank's story is as powerful an example of personal redemption and teshuva (returning/repentance) that you're ever going to hear. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/judaismdemystified/support
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Barbara Bain, Legendary Actress, “Mission Impossible” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Barbara Bain, is a beloved actress who is perhaps best known for her portrayal of undercover agent “Cinnamon Carter” on the classic TV series, “Mission: Impossible”, for which she became the first actress in television history to receive 3 consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She also received a Golden Globe Award nomination and a Photoplay Award nomination for Best Female TV star. She also created the iconic role of “Dr. Helena Russell” in the classic British science fiction series “Space: 1999” and the made-for-TV movies “Alien Attack”, “Destination Moonbase Alpha”, “Cosmic Princess” and “Journey Through the Black Sun”. And over the years we've seen her in dozens of TV shows including “The Dick Van Dyke Show”, “Perry Mason”, “Get Smart”, “Moonlighting”, “Murder, She Wrote”, “Diagnosis Murder”, “CSI” and many more. Her movie credits include “Savage”, “Skinheads”, “Panic”, “Bel Air”, “Trapped”, “Political Disasters”, “Nothing Special”, “On the Rocks”, “American Gun”, for which she received a DVD Exclusive Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and 3 of my favourite short films: “Reconnected”, for which she received a Best Actress nomination at the Madrid International Film Festival; “Take My Hand”, for which she won 3 prestigious film festival awards; and “Pacific Edge”, for which she won Best Actress Awards at the Golden Door International Film Festival AND the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. And I can't resist mentioning her hilarious performance as “Dr. Olga Schmetner” in the 1981 TV movie, “The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island”. On the stage, she's won Los Angeles Critic's Circle and DramaLogue Awards for her performances in "Wings", "Happy Days" and "The Chairs". And in 2016 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And if ALL OF THAT weren't enough, out guest founded a children's literacy program through the Screen Actors Guild called "Book Pals", which initially had hundreds of actors reading to school children in major cities across America. And now it's an online program called “Storyline Online”, so kids all over the world can choose a famous actor to read them a story. In episode 298 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on the importance of the 'why' over the 'how' in photography, avoiding the need for a 'style' and why subject matter should be based on your passions and interests. Plus this week, photographer Virginia Turbett takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which she answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Virginia Turbett was born in 1957 in rural West Sussex and is a British rock music and social reportage photographer best known for her photographs of bands, fans and street culture between the years of 1977 and 1987. In 1977 Turbett was asked by a good friend to photograph the Sex Pistols recording Pretty Vacant for Slash magazine. A year, and many punk gigs later, a chance meeting with a Sounds journalist led to a collaboration which lasted a few years – photographing Punk, Rock, Pop, Heavy Metal, Mods, New Romantics, Skinheads, Two-Tone, Ska, Reggae, the fans, style and fashion of the time. At the same time, Turbett was working on a left-wing paper photographing social and political stories. In 1979 she was asked by the Editor of Smash Hits magazine, to photograph features and interviews and she continued working on the magazine until she gave up photography to look after her two children in 1987. Turbett contributed to many magazines of the late 70's and 80's including The Face, Sounds, Smash Hits, and Record Mirror creating images of artists and musicians including the Pistols, Clash, Blondie, Iggy, Andy Warhol, Frank Zappa and Nick Cave. Turbutt now works from her home in South Devon selling prints from her archive and contributing to publications, films and TV, exhibitions and record covers. https://virginiaturbett.com Dr.Grant Scott After fifteen years art directing photography books and magazines such as Elle and Tatler, Scott began to work as a photographer for a number of advertising and editorial clients in 2000. Alongside his photographic career Scott has art directed numerous advertising campaigns, worked as a creative director at Sotheby's, art directed foto8magazine, founded his own photographic gallery, edited Professional Photographer magazine and launched his own title for photographers and filmmakers Hungry Eye. He founded the United Nations of Photography in 2012, and is now a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, and a BBC Radio contributor.
