The Criminal Under My Own Hat 1992).

Even as temperatures increase, sea levels rise, and natural disasters escalate, our current environmental crisis feels difficult to predict and understand. But climate change and its effects on us are not new. In a bold narrative that spans centuries and continents, Peter Frankopan argues that nature has always played a fundamental role in the writing of history. From the fall of the Moche civilization in South America that came about because of the cyclical pressures of El Niño to volcanic eruptions in Iceland that affected Egypt and helped bring the Ottoman empire to its knees, climate change and its influences have always been with us. Frankopan explains how the Vikings emerged thanks to catastrophic crop failure, why the roots of regime change in eleventh-century Baghdad lay in the collapse of cotton prices resulting from unusual climate patterns, and why the western expansion of the frontiers in North America was directly affected by solar flare activity in the eighteenth century. Again and again, Frankopan shows that when past empires have failed to act sustainably, they have been met with catastrophe. Blending brilliant historical writing and cutting-edge scientific research, The Earth Transformed will radically reframe the way we look at the world and our future. 1930 PASADENA CA

"As I elaborate in the book, there was no physical contact or romantic engagement. The reason why I chose the ‘lover' as the [psychoanalytic] analogy is, in the real world outside of psychoanalytic practice, where else do you have an interpersonal encounter that is so intensely engaging, attentive, respectful, and caring? That would be in the first six weeks or six months of a romantic relationship. If we eliminate the romantic/sexual part and just stay with ‘wow, this other party is paying such attention to me' -  reminds me of Lacan's idea that what we really seek in the other is their desire for us, which by the way, I don't completely agree with because I think it goes both ways - I would say that that is the analogy from the world of lovers that I would map onto psychoanalytic work at least on the part of the psychoanalyst - he or she ideally pays that kind of intense attention, care, respect and attunement, that you would find between lovers.”   Episode Description: We begin with discussing the various ways that we can shape our psychoanalytic frame to enable a deepening of the clinical encounter. This is in contrast to frames that have gone awry. In his book Lover - Exorcist - Critic Alan describes a composite patient where he became over-involved to the detriment of the work that was eventually repaired. We reference a problematic frame in his earlier training analysis that perhaps set the stage for this difficulty. He shares with us his concept that "by enlightening subjectivity, by raising consciousness, depth psychotherapy liberates." We discuss in some detail the forces in him, his patient, and their relationship that led him to greater enactments than were useful. He shares with us the challenges he faced in remedying his emotional imbalance with her and the intense rage it awakened in her, deriving from various periods in her life. We both emphasized the vital role of the consultant at such times. We close with Alan describing his co-founding and leadership in the Rose City Center - a low fee clinic providing dynamic psychotherapy to individuals who would never otherwise see the inside of an analyst's office.   Our Guest: Alan Michael Karbelnig, PhD is a psychoanalyst, writer, teacher, and forensic psychologist and practices in Pasadena, California. He is a supervising and training psychoanalyst at the New Center for Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles. He lectures nationally and internationally, including in China, India, Thailand, and Israel. He writes a weekly Substack newsletter titled Journeys to the Unconscious Mind. Alan has published 20 scholarly articles and five book chapters in addition to his book Lover, Exorcist, and Critic. He considers his 2004 founding of Rose City Center—a nonprofit clinic providing psychoanalytic psychotherapy for economically disadvantaged persons throughout California—his proudest professional accomplishment.    Recommended Readings:   Bellow, H. 104. Creating cities for transformative development

Mr. Morial is the former mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana, and current President and CEO of the National Urban League. The National Urban League is a civil rights group that promotes equality, social justice, and economic empowerment. The National Urban League spearheads social programs, public policy research, and advocacy efforts in over 300 communities across the U.S. to shrink the wealth gap in underserved communities. Through a combination of education, entrepreneurship, and job training, the National Urban League looks to create self-reliance and reinvigorate small- and medium-sized cities. Many thinkers believe that the best indication of a society's development is its ability to increase population. If population is increasing, that means there are sufficient resources, from food, water, or income, to support life. In 1798, Thomas Malthus, a famous economist from the 19th century, published his seminal work, An Essay on the Principle of Population. Here, Malthus theorized how increased agricultural production led to a higher population, but not necessarily improved standards of living; this is known as the Malthusian Trap. To Arthur Lewis, a Nobel-winning economist from the 20th century, population growth was a necessary prerequisite for the improvement of living conditions. Once food production was capable of increasing population, people would begin flocking towards cities, which would then improve living standards as they became hubs of investment. Lewis termed this dynamic the Lewis Turning Point. Today, some thinkers, such as Esther Duflo, a leading development economist, are rethinking the Malthusian Trap or the Lewis Turning Point, trying to understand how people in cities grow out of poverty and advance their standard of living.   Cities are economic hubs for the United States. They are often centers of population, jobs, resources, transportation, finance, healthcare, or even social services. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, small- and medium-sized metro areas, make up about 90% of the United States' GDP. When I say cities, everyone is probably thinking of Chicago, New York, or San Francisco; but these are just the biggest, most memorable ones. America is also comprised of hundreds of smaller cities that, taken together, are an important part of America's economic engine. As of 2022, there are 263 urban centers with populations between 100,000-300,000 people. These are places like Worcester, Massachusetts, Pasadena California, or Odessa, Texas. 59 urban centers have populations between 300,000 to 1 million. This includes cities like San Antonio, Texas, Memphis, Tennessee, or places like New Orleans, Louisiana, where our guest was born and raised. Needless to say, these cities can be forgotten when it comes to public policy or investment. Everyone thinks of those big flashy cities like New York or San Francisco, while the others are left behind. Our guest today spoke not just of the importance of cities, but how we can make them better places to develop better standards of living for everyone. Mr. Morial earned his bachelor's degree in African American Studies and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and his JD from Georgetown University. Together, we discussed how living conditions in New Orleans changed since Mr. Morial's mayorship, how many cities across the US face similar deterioration, and how the country can produce transformative development for future generations. Welcome back everyone, on this episode we are discussing the Devils Gate Dam in Pasadena California. This dam is said to have some really dark energy and apparently as legend has it, it's a dark portal and said to be one of the seven gates to hell believed to be on earth. There is also a rock formation in the shape of a devil's face located next to the dam's gate... now if that doesn't make this creepy enough to get your attention, we aren't sure what will. We give you some background on this spooky site, oh and here's a teaser for you, there was talk of a moonchild... The information is kind of weird but very interesting as to who and what that who was doing there. We also talk about a bunch of nonsense as per our usual banter. So, get in on the fun of this very intense and evil location as well as some junk we go on about.

Nick was the first person to come to the hospital to sit with my mom when I was in a coma. What brought on such a hard time was a 9 month episode. It was by far the worst time in my life but with the help of many friends and community I was able to get through this hard time.   I met Nick in Northern Colorado over 20 years ago. We have been having deep theological talks and also laughing and having fun for more than two decades. Having him on the podcast was a huge honor. Joanna married her high school sweetheart right out of high school and had five children. Throughout her children's education she volunteered in the PTA and was engaged in volunteering in her kids' classrooms during their elementary school years. Joanna and her husband started a small swimming pool company which in time grew and became successful and is still in operation to this day. Joanna and husband also opened a small restaurant and two flower shops. The restaurant did not last long. However, the two flower shops were solely run by Joanna and became successful. As a result, Joanna became a member of several local Chamber of Commerce to promote the flower shop business. Joanna's Floral Expressions which is the DBA has been well known in the local community. Joanna is now going into her 12th year as a faithful member of the San Gabriel Chamber of Commerce. This year 2023 will be Joanna's second time serving as Chamber President. After Joanna's divorce in 2017 and then attending her youngest child's college graduation, she pondered her next step in life. After raising five children, three of them college graduates from the Unites States Merchant Marine Academy, and two in the family pool business, and being a successful entrepreneur in the community, Joanna decided to pursue a college education. Joanna enrolled at Pasadena City College and with the same work ethic, determination, and enthusiasm she will be completing an Associate's Degree in May 2023. Her goal is to earn a Bachelor's degree in psychology with and emphasis in Child Development. Currently Joanna spends her time studying, running her part time flower business, volunteering in local community organizations, and spending time with her grandchildren.
