Philadelphia hardcore band Soul Glo put out one of the best records of 2022: Diaspora Problems. It made it on many "best of" lists, Jeff Rosenstock tweeted about how amazing it was and the band My Chemical Romance invited Soul Glo to open for them. But, what we've learned as the group have transitioned from a DIY punk band to being one of the names constantly referenced in the current hardcore reconnaissance is that they like ska. So we brought on bassist GG Guerra to discuss the genre. He talks about his love for Arrogant Sons of Bitches, specifically their landmark record, Three Cheers For Disappointment. We also discuss Folly--Soul Glo singer Pierce Jordan participated in a cover of Folly's song "Broken" with members of Catbite, We Are The Union, The Best of the Worst and Gouge Away for 2 Minutes to Late Night. We also talked about Soul Glo's love for JER. GG assures us that at some point in the near future, we can expect a JER/Soul Glo collaboration. We talk about so much more. Ska Against Racism, GG's Choking Victim tattoo, GG's old ska band, signing to Epitaph, how the film Whiplash inspired the idea for the video for "Jump!! (Or Get Jumped!!!) ((by the future))" and we dig deep into the recording of Soul Glo's Diaspora Problems. Plus Adam reveals the name of Atomic Garden Recording Studio's owner Jack Shirley's old ska band!PickinnputtinPickinnputtin-Music and golf with guests from both worlds. Scowl is one of a handful of new hardcore bands blowing up at the moment. And, more importantly, they are a band with ska roots. Specifically, their bassist Bailey Lupo, who used to play bass in San Jose ska-punk band The Caps (or CAPS). So, we brought them on to get all the deets on their ska past. Bailey told us about packing records at Asian Man Records as a teen. (They begged Mike Park to release the Scowl record in 2020, but he passed). Bailey talked about recently meeting JER in Gainsville and vowed to our audience that, one day, Scowl would collaborate with Skatune Network. And they talked about the bands that influenced The Caps: The Specials, Choking Victim and a whole slew of surf bands. But we got even deeper and talked about the late 2000s/early 2010s San Jose punk scene they came from and talked about legendary groups like Leer, Hard Girls (featuring Jeff Rosenstock's guitarist Mike Huguenor), Monstrauss (Who played ska & grunge ie Skunge), Matsuri, Stickup Kid and Point of View. And of course, we had to talk about San Jose's weirdest punk venue, Nickel City. Hyper Ska artist Eichlers wrote a song about the venue on their sophomore record. We also talk about touring with Limp Bizkit, what it was like to have thousands of kids show up to their Real Bay Shit shows, seeing Laura Stevenson at a backyard BBQ in San Jose, and we discuss the horrible Punknews comments they sifted through every day. Most importantly, we talked about Adam and Aaron's old band, Gnarboots! Support the show

This week's guest drew from his own personal experiences to develop a new way of looking at mental wellbeing and the healing process. In this in-depth and insightful conversation, Sascha leads us through his childhood discovery of punk rock and his first experiences with the mental health system to the creation of the Icarus Project and his current work as a social worker and mental health coach and trainer. We also dive into the role that punk rock played in it all, and the lifeline it provided him. All in all, this episode is a masterclass from a true trailblazer.
This week legendary punk front person Stza Crack (Scott Sturgeon) joins The Bastard Sermon to talk everything from Star F*cking Hipsters, Choking Victim, Leftover Crack, C-Squat, smoking crack and much more.
Augusta Koch’s first band was called The Blue Bananas, a ska band. They had a few originals and performed a Choking Victim song. They didn’t last long. She’s since gone on to play in some incredible non-ska bands like Cayetana and Gladie. And she even sang vocals for the fictitious group DUH in the horror-comedy film Uncle Peckerhead. But ska has remained important to her. During the pandemic, she found comfort in revisiting some of her favorite bands from when she was younger. RX Bandits have been a particular favorite for her. Augusta talks with us, not just about her ska roots, but also what it’s been like for her the past couple of years, creatively and personally. We discuss a blog post she wrote about starting smoking again during the pandemic and she also tells us about Jeff Rosenstock asking her to contribute to SKA DREAM by screaming on a few tracks. We discuss the Sparks cover she made with Mike Park, and we also get into a discussion about what her favorite Mountain Goats record is. And most importantly, we try to understand why the ska scene just feels so much better to be a part of than other “cooler” scenes. We come up with a few theories. This week on Dopey! In a super different type of show we are joined by Dave's childhood friend Sascha Altman DuBrul. Dave and Sacha talk about growing up in Manhattan, and the major sign posts on Sascha's incredible journey through the anarchist punk rock wonderland of the Lower East Side, where he got deep into the scene, playing bass and writing songs for the renowned NYC ska punk band, Choking Victim. Sascha then hopped freight trains across the country and ultimately had a psychotic break getting diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He became an American activist, and co-founded The Icarus Project, an international community support network and media project, redefining the language and culture of mental health and illness. Plus Dopey legend of law enforcement, Butchie a.k.a T.J comes over to Dave's house on Long Island to hang out on the show! We also hear a classic Dopey voicemail and much much more on this new style, old school episode of Dopey!
Leftover Crack is a band of dumpster-diving, drug-abusing, cop-hating crust punks…so begins the opening section in the book Architects of Self Destruction, an oral history of the band. The story of Leftover Crack is strange—unbelievable at times—and filled with bizarre decisions, weird characters, and as the title implies, copious self-sabotage. They were also a very unique band, formed in the ashes of Choking Victim in the late 90s that mixed ska, dissonant punk rock, and angry black metal in a unique way. As unbelievable as many of Leftover Cracks stories are, the fact that these stories are now documented in a book is almost more unbelievable. The author, or rather authors are Brad Logan, longtime guitarist in the group, and Punknews contributor John Gentile. The two collaborated on this project by interviewing a whole bunch of people and stringing together their stories and contradictory perspectives to give the reader an unfiltered view of what exactly happened…as told by those that were there. On today’s episode, we discuss some of the stories in the book, like how Choking Victim broke up 2 days into recording their one album, how Leftover Crack wanted to name their first album Shoot the Kids At School but Hellcat Records told them no, and we also discuss the polarizing leader of the band, Scott Sturgeon. March 2020 will be forever known as the time that life on earth changed and not just for a day or a few days but for forever. In the USA we will often hear about how celebrities and famous athletes are coping. This is not to say they're not sacrificing or having to cope but what is more important to me are the stories of those who are not part of those elite groups. The playing field has been leveled and now, a good percentage of us, are on the same level. Rich, poor or in-between, we are all figuring this out one day at a time. I first met Skwert a few years ago when I booked his band Public Serpents to play a show in western Mass with Youth Brigade and Off With Their Heads. He had sent me his band's CD and I carried it in the record shop I had at the time. We had lost touch since but Public Serpents actually played a few shows out here in southern California and I drove all the way to Fullerton (which is something I wouldn't normally do) to see them. Public Serpents has gone from a phase of inactivity to now being quite an active band. Things were moving full steam ahead until the pandemic put a stop to everything and said "not so fast". We discuss Public Serpents, his label Tent City Records, Choking Victim and chicken coops. This week, with the world's forests burning from the Amazon to Indonesia, we’re revisiting a 2017 episode about the future of food—the production of which, whether beef or palm oil, has caused an unprecedented number of deliberate fires. Centuries of colonialism and resource extraction have transformed continents and the waters between them. Oceans are rising and acidifying, resulting in the extinction of some species and the proliferation of others. What will the act of eating be like 30 years from now? Fifty? One hundred? To imagine that future, we’re joined in this episode by a novelist and a chef—Alexandra Kleeman and Jen Monroe—who dreamed up what a dinner party might look like in the future, on the border between science fiction and reality … and then threw that dinner party, in the corner of a Brooklyn restaurant. Go beyond the episode: Read about the indigenous fight against Jair Bolsonaro and his agribusiness interests in the AmazonCheck out Bad Taste, Jen Monroe’s experimental food project, and read this article from “Balling the Queen,” a series of essays and dinners exploring honey bees, consumption, and collapseRead “Choking Victim,” a short story by Alexandra KleemanExplore the unusual artistic encounters of The Bellwether, which put on The Next Menu, and read Jordan Kisner’s essay on the massive aspen grove threatened by climate changeTune in every week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. On today's ep, we are playing a little game. A simple roll of the dice will bring up a certain genre and year and we will hear one of the top songs in that quadrant. Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it. It's simpler than it sounds. Tonight we have the extreme fortune of hearing from Shania Twain, Rancid, Celine Dion, Incubus, 2Pac, the Dixie Chicks, MXPX, Backstreet Boys, New Kids on the Block, Garth Brooks, Puff Daddy, the Wallflowers, Choking Victim, and Jay-Z. It may well be the very most diverse list of artists ever on one of our episodes. This is what a woman wants Any man of mine better be proud of me Even when I'm ugly he still better love me And I can be late for a date that's fine But he better be on time Twitter @199what Instagram @199whatpod Listen to our Spotify "Mixtape" playlist: spoti.fi/2IYuHlp Or listen to the Mixtape on Apple Music: apple.co/2pUi2qI

Scott Sturgeon aka Stza Crack of Leftöver Crack and Whitney Flynn of Days N Daze get down with Al Ghostcat of Cop/Out, film maker Ryan Kollin and artist Kaitlyn Chen in a seedy hotel in Miami for a Post Tour “Party” or whatever you want to call it. We wrap up this winter 2019 tour: “Still Crusty After All These Years” featuring Leftöver Crack - Days N Daze - and Cop/Out. We tell some fucked up stories from the road, and some good ones, talk a TON of shit … mostly we talk shit … and we talk about punk family and what that means. But we also talk about the new things on the horizon! Whitney tells us about the new Days N Daze album in the works, her solo stuff, and gives us a sneak peak of a book she is writing. PLUS we listen to tunes from Cop/Out, Days N Daze, Leftöver Crack, and Intro5pect.
It's the 15th episode where I ask my listeners what they want to hear! Wheeee! Here is the awesome result! I'm pretty happy with it! I got a lot of other good suggestions that I didn't get a chance to include, so those will either be in a future edition of the "You Call It" series, or maybe I'll filter a few into the regular episodes. Either way, more good ska for all of you to hear! 00:00 - aRevo - Schware Hockn (Weiter Geht's '17) 02:37 - the Lizdexics - Wood Dale (Emerson Recordings '01) 05:47 - Failed to Victory - Jokes on Me (Skank Your Socks Off '15) 08:55 - Thirteen Towers - Two-Banana Habit (Two-Banana Habit '18) 11:55 - Choking Victim - 500 Channels (No Gods / No Masters '98) 14:34 - Privileged - Can't be True (POS '18) 17:37 - Baccone Dolce - Sugar Cookie (Barbecued Cats '96) 20:49 - Reel Big Fish - Keep a Cool Head (Fame, Fortune & Fornication '09) Find & like us on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/23minofSka This episode and all episodes back to the start in 2010 are available at http://www.23Ska.com There's a lot of great ska vinyl out there, so head over to our partners in crime at http://www.GrandpasCasino.com and pick up some great sounds! This week, we look at how we have irrevocably shaped the planet through consumption: of fossil fuels, exotic foods, cups of tea. Erika Rappaport talks about how the drive for empire was spurred on by lust for a certain caffeinated plant, which fueled countless wars and colonial expansion. And Alexandra Kleeman and Jen Monroe throw a dinner party for the future, imagining what food will taste like in 30 years’ time. • Episode page: https://theamericanscholar.org/once-and-future-food/ • Go beyond the episode: • Erika Rappaport’s A Thirst for Empire: How Tea Shaped the Modern World • Bon Appétit explains how to brew the perfect cup of tea • Check out Bad Taste, Jen Monroe’s experimental food project • Read “Choking Victim,” a short story by Alexandra Kleeman • Explore the unusual artistic encounters of The Bellwether, which put on The Next Menu, and Jordan Kisner’s essay on the massive aspen grove threatened by climate change • Tune in every two weeks to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books.
