Maybe it's something you quietly tell yourself over and over again -- actual words, floating through your brain in a steady monologue. Maybe it's more like a movie, as you visualize what happens next while you work through any given challenge. But all of it can be categorized as “self-talk,” and it holds surprising sway over whether we feel like whatever it is we're doing will be incredible -- or fail miserably. So how do you learn to have positive self-talk, especially while in the middle of something extremely challenging or even more than a little scary? Can you self-talk your way to success? Can learning how to do so outside translate to your indoor life, too? Facebook's Oldest Intern: How a 60-year-old fitness trainer reinvented himself with the most unlikely of companies by Howard Waldstreicher Maybe it was a sign to switch careers? That's what I thought when the pandemic hit and I was struggling to pay the rent at the gym I owned. I had created HalfHourPower, a proprietary training system for athletes and had taken my method on the road opening studios. I was burnt out from the business after so many years anyway. At age 60, could I really get back into tech? I was twenty-plus years out of this industry and corporate work in general. But I had been keeping myself biologically young and strong with diet, training, lifestyle and some genetic good luck. I knew I had things to offer, if only I could prove myself an asset to these companies (and to myself). I just needed one shot, and as my mother always told me, “It only takes one.” I started applying. Nothing – no acknowledgements, no responses, no signs of life. I applied everywhere. I applied for programs set up for people re-entering the workforce. I tried to use whatever connections I had. I networked. I got certifications for data science and data analysis and practiced regularly. Crickets. My wife was my biggest champion though and encouraged me to apply for a job posting at Facebook. “There's no way,” I said incredulously. “Facebook? The best of the best?”

Description: In this episode, I am speaking with Howard Waldstreicher. He is the author of Facebook's Oldest Intern: How a 60-year-old fitness trainer reinvented himself with the most unlikely of companies. This is a fascinating story of how Howard, who was totally screwed in the pandemic as a gym owner and fitness trainer, picked himself up and revived a previous career, and got hired at Facebook at the age of 60. Here is how Howard describes himself on his Amazon author page. Call him what you will - a gadfly, a shortie, or a squeaky-voiced Texas cowboy. But I had a blast working for Ross Perot. At age 26, this Queens-born boy got his first real job as a computer programmer for Perot's Electronic Data Systems in Plano, Texas. I liked the structure and the dress code: wingtip shoes, blue and grey suits, short haircuts, and conservative ties. In fact, if you dared to visit the bathroom without your jacket it was grounds for termination. These days, things are a little bit different. At 60 (61 now), I stumble out of bed, throw on some sweatpants, and meander to my desk. Nobody cares if I've brushed my hair or if I've showered, or if I'm wearing pants. After all, I work at Facebook. Wait, it's Meta now. Well, that's what the millennials tell me, anyway. They've helped me with a lot of stuff I don't know since I'm the oldest employee at the office, definitely top three. Thing is, despite the fact that it's the alter universe from Perot's clean-cut company, I absolutely freaking love it. I landed the job after a 20-year hiatus from the information technology world, during which time I ran a fitness center, was a tennis instructor, and had a family. So, not only did I leave my field, but I left the world of having to answer to a boss - at all. My adult kids thought my new gig was cool. No other employer would even speak to me about a job at my age. This episode is sponsored by Career Pivot. Life happens to you while you're coaching. Sharing personal experiences and stories can be valuable for clients. However, when and if you're in the middle of it, you shouldn't be “healing from the stage” (a term used by professional speakers).  Know when it's not a coaching relationship and it's become something else. Be ethical and willing to say goodbye.  If you're hiring coaches, identify when they're not coaching they're “friending” and put an end to it, or find a new coach.  “Because I said so” (mom/kid scenario) doesn't work well. It's got to be their idea. Instead of “You've got to put on your oxygen mask first” or “self care is not selfish” > How does it make you feel when you make time for yourself and exercise? How does that change the rest of your day?  Do you want to explore ways to do more of that? Without thinking about any obstacles, would it be great if you were someone who exercised regularly? What kind of benefits do you think you'd get if you did?  You mentioned you always get hurt when you get started or you're getting into a routine. Say more about that.  You said you're suffering from hot flashes and night sweats. What kind of exercise and nutrition changes have you made to mitigate that?  You mention that you're doing a lot of walking and you lift weights regularly. Can you describe that in detail so we can determine how well it matches the best recommendations for women in menopause?  Here's the formula:  I - tell a story about yourself that is relevant to what your client may be doing. Describe a time when you were making a similar mistake or one that you can draw an analogy from.  We - bring yourself to the customer. Refer to you as one of them, or just like her by doing this. You're no longer on a pedestal or intimidating.  You - Ask, What about you? Do you…. Have you ever …  In a new masterclass for Continuing Education credits for our Flipping50® Menopause Fitness Specialists, I explore Essential Coaching Skills for Working with Midlife Women. My guest Holly Frances is the survivor of a rare illness who turned her recovery into advocacy and is now a writer, speaker, and fitness trainer. What happened and how did she recover?  At 26 years old, she gave birth to her beautiful daughter Casey.  Within a few weeks, tragedy hit, and Holly was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder known as Guillain-Barre Syndrome.  Through the dedicated assistance of her mother and the determination and hope she had in living to raise her daughter, Holly fought for months to regain her strength and health.  She went from being bedridden to being in a wheelchair, then using a walker, and ultimately walking and exercising without any assistance.  Holly's recovery videos have gone viral.  She recently wrote her memoir titled Life Support – Surviving Guillain-Barre Syndrome and openly shares with us her painful recovery and many triumphs.Book:  Life Support – Surviving Guillain-Barre SyndromeWebsite: www.hollyaftergbs.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hollyaftergbs/Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/hollyaftergbs/YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/user/hollygerlachTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@hollyaftergbs

My goal here is to teach you the fundamentals of being a successful online fitness trainer. I will educate you on what type of business model you should build your business around to make it as profitable as possible.   If you are getting nervous about $200k being too much of an “unrealistic” goal in your eyes, you can plug absolutely any number into that equation and this EXTREMELY SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE business model will work wonders for you.    Trust me, I'm a bit of a meathead. So if I can apply the same business model to my own business and see success, then you can too (and probably even be better)   First initial questions to build our business model ~ How much do you want to be charging? ~ How are going to be able to sell at that rate?   Some guidance from my end, take as you will, I recommend you charge more rather than less. The typical personal trainer needs to have the mindset that they NEED to charge extremely low in order to be successful. This is extremely counterintuitive.   ~ How much money do you want to make? ~ How many sales do you want to make weekly?   Let's look at it from a sales perspective now   There is a sales pipeline that you need to implement AND work effectively to be able to hit the answers to the above questions. The following are stages of the pipeline that needs to be excelled, in this order ~ opt-in, app, triage, calls, and sale.    I'll show you an example of what each stage's numbers might look like Lets say we are trying to make 40 sales per month with a revenue of $72,000/month   Pipeline  Sales: 40 Calls: 64 Triage: 102 Application: 163 Opt-in: 1,000   Each of the stages has a successful conversion rate that we use to calculate the number we need to hit for the next step in the pipeline based on our desired sales/revenue goal.

She's passionate about providing her clients with her playbook and systems to teach them how to build the business they want and deserve, without the constant anxiety, overwhelm, exhaustion, or frustration. Through the conversation, we tackle a ton of valuable topics like: 1. Knowing the right way to grow by finding the right relationships with complimentary businesses.  2. Learning from what others do well, and what others don't do well, and applying that to your business. 3. Setting boundaries... sdpecifically how legal policies and procedures/ client agreements/ terms of service are really just a way of of communicating our feelings in a legal document in a way that protects your energy and peace of mind which is directly linked to the success of your business. 4. Reframing the importance of legal agreements- no matter what size business you run. Why it's vitally important that you don't put your future and fate in the hands of a sketchy google doc. Take yourself seriously as a business owner. 5. We wrap up with our guests's take on the future of fitness   SHOW NOTES: She Vs. World Podcast https://www.daniellesteadblanton.com/

This episode is going to cause you to question a lot about our industry, and how you're offering the experience of exercise in your business. Because when it comes to inclusion, there is so much that we don't think of that is causing a massive population of people to feel unwelcome and defeated by what you're offering, rather than the way you hope they feel- inspired and excited to come back again. And I guarantee most of it is flying under your radar.   Things like… how you program your workouts, how you coach your workouts… whether or not offering pre-choreographed classes are the right thing to offer. How you've positioned your equipment in the room, and what that equipment is in the first place. Even down to what we define as “fit” or “fitness” in the first place! You'll learn about why each of those and more might be culprits by listening to this episode today.   What's so interesting to me is that the biggest concern that we hear fitness business owners talk about is their ability to attract new clients, or get clients to stay longer, and in this episode, you'll learn that the answer to that may come from the realization that you've unconsciously and unintentionally been scaring away a huge potential clientele, simply from adopting too limited a view of what your business can be.   SHOW NOTES: https://www.tashaedwards.com/ https://www.instagram.com/iamtashaedwards/
