Since the world clearly needs another podcast about movies, the Rommies have reunited to revive the 1F Film Festival, in pobcass format! Join them for another iteration of everyone's favorite lo-fi, living room film festival.
New Year, New (actually, just the same) Rommies! After a brief (horny?) holiday hiatus, the Rommies are back for their next Festival run, and this year they're kicking things off with Matt's first pick. Listen in as they dive into this nearly 30-year-old, lo-fi sci-fi joint that somehow seems more timely/relevant than ever. Finally, be sure to stick around until the very end for a brief biology lesson in Matt's Science Corner.
When it came time to wrap up the Horny Summer run, it only felt right to select a film where a) Glen Powell spends nearly the entire run time trying to hook up, and b) the movie literally ends as a new school year is starting. Join the Rommies for one final, crazy weekend full of booze, baseball, weed, parties, and summer.
When the Rommies' partners go away for the summer, they soon realize they need a new outlet for their horniness, and what better way than to road trip to the beach with a cousin-in-law?? Listen in as they dive into Alfonso Cuarón's masterpiece, which may be the horniest and summeriest (and saddest) film of the entire run.
After taking some time off in Somewhere In The Indian Ocean, the Rommies return to the sumptuous locales of the Mediterranean to have a romantic summer fling with their one true love: a peach. Join them as they discuss one of the horniest Best Picture nominees in recent memory (that unfortunately lost to the not-nearly-as-horny movie where Sally Hawkins fucks a fish instead of a fruit).
What's hornier/summerer than a mustachioed Anthony Edwards singing about great [big] balls, playing [the most homoerotic game of beach volleyball ever committed to film] with the boys, or [finding] that lovin' feelin' for your teacher? Why, the American Military-Industrial Complex of course! Join the Rommies as they talk about the planes going vroom (and also how they wish Top Gun: Maverick was even remotely horny so they could have done that one for the pob instead).
(In honor of Horny Holidays, the Rommies have decided to open the vault and release the Horny Summer archives. Merry Festivus and/or Happy Chrismukkah, Listener!) After the Rommies get everyone they know to come to a beautiful Greek island for their wedding, they simply have no choice but to try and determine who their father is by getting horned up to ABBA songs. Is it still so nice? Is it still so goOoOod? Are they successful in solving the mystery? Listen in to find out!
When the patron saints of Horny Summer (Glen Powell, tornadoes) team up for a new movie, you GOTTA know the Rommies are gonna be there to cover it! Join them for a whirlwind discussion about how this legacyquel updates and/or rehashes the original, the absolute joy of a dumb (but well-made) summer blockbuster, and the complete and utter failure of this movie not being even remotely horny. Plus, Matt and Tierney finally get to the bottom of whether or not Collin masterminded the entire Horny Summer pob run simply because he wanted to talk about this movie that he hadn't even seen yet.
After a fairly chaste school year, the Rommies decide to try and have a horny summer by moving into their dying dad's fully automated domicile (a SMART HOUSE, if you will) which is conveniently located across the street from their crush. At first, their plan works! They are able to spend quality time (both in and out of the shower) with their crush, and their dad even starts getting into the horny summer vibe by reconnecting with his ex-wife. After a few weeks though, the Personal Applied Technology computer (PAT, if you will) that runs the house starts to get jealous of all the horniness. It takes corporeal form and traps the Rommies and their dad in the house in an attempt to keep the horniness all to itself. Will the Rommies be able to escape PAT and the SMART HOUSE to have one more horny summer with their crush before school starts again? Will the Rommies' dad be able to escape PAT and the SMART HOUSE to have one last horny summer before dying? Listen in to find out!
While the rest of the world transitioned from Pop Girl Spring to Brat Summer and now to Moo Deng Autumn, the Rommies are holding fast to Horny Summer with this fresh, hot-off-the-presses (i.e., recorded many months ago back when it actually WAS summer) new episode! Listen in as they praise early-career Kathryn Bigelow's directing chops, debate whose is the real love story of the movie, and wonder if there's an alternate universe where the surfing movie became a global blockbuster franchise that (somehow?) escalated to towing a bank vault through Rio (on surfboards? on dry land?) or riding a wave into space (liquid water would freeze up there? spacesuits don't seem as convenient for surfing as wetsuits?).
Hop into your time machine and join the Rommies (and another returning special guest!) as they keep the Horny Summer party going, but this time with a little ancient Egyptian flair. Listen in as they discuss this film's place in the action/adventure genre lineage (and Millennial culture in general), try to determine the logistics of Desert Voldemort “inheriting” certain body parts from his foes during his reanimation process, and defend the horniness of this movie against some blasphemous claims to the contrary.
After having so much fun discussing horny in their Challengers episode, the Rommies decided to keep up the heat for the next run of the pob: Horny Summer! And what better way to kick off the new season than to welcome back a returning guest with strong horny summer bonafides to talk about this 90s classic. Listen in as they analyze the feminist themes, share harrowing real-life tornado encounters, and discuss (excitedly and concernedly) the upcoming sequel.
After getting to the end of the Road to 100, the Rommies weren't sure which road to go down next. However, once they all saw Horny Tennis: The Movie, they knew they had a (temporary, at least) answer! Join them for this emergency pob as they discuss all of the things that make this one of the most exciting films of the year, debate where this falls in the Luca Guadagnino oeuvre, and do some live-on-the-air investigating to try and get to the ~HARD~ truth of a particular pivotal moment.
As they approached their 100th episode, the Rommies began feeling ill at ease, like they were conscious, but it was themselves that they were conscious of. Luckily, there was no undertone of violence, but they still weren't quite sure What They Were Pob For. Finally, after some soul searching with a touch of interdimensional hijinks, they realized that They're Just Pob, and that's Pobnough. At that point, the only thing left to do was to Pob The Night away while discussing the biggest, and unquestionably one of the absolute best, films of 2023. Enjoy this extra special deep dive into this extra special movie, and until next time, the Rommies are off to see their gynecologist!
In the final episode of both their Unconventional Trilogy series and the Road To 100, the Rommies take a look at this Hungarian Planet of the Apes spin-off. Listen in as they discuss the similarities (“Humans do be dumb.”) and differences (literally everything else) between Caesar and Hagen's stories.
Sliding in just under the wire while still just a trilogy, the Rommies set aside their somewhat irrational anger at the naming convention switch to dive into the final entry of Caesar's story. Listen in as they discuss how effectively Andy Serkis, Matt Reeves, and co. wrap up the reimagined Apes arc, rank the films of the series (the results of which may surprise you!), and consider where the series will go from here.
For the next episode of their Unconventional Trilogies series, the Rommies are joined by an extra special guest to discuss the next entry in the PotA reimagining saga. Listen in as they highlight all of the ways this film leveled up from Really Good Popcorn Flick™️ to Legitimately Great Cinema™️, point out several surprisingly apt references to other movie franchises from Star Wars to Fast & Furious, and finally begin workshopping their pitch for a new character to enter the Apes cineverse: Fuckles the Ape Clown.
The Rommies begin the final entry in their Unconventional Trilogies run with the first film in the Caesar Trilogy. Listen in as they discuss all of the things that make this so much better than it had any right being, worship at the altar of Mo-Cap God Andy Serkis, and spend WAY too much time trying to decipher the geographic accuracy (or, perhaps more appropriately, inaccuracy) of the Bay Area as presented in this movie.
In both a spiritual sequel to the Cornetto Trilogy (stylized genre comedy) and a spiritual sequel to the Frozen short film episode of the pob (Tierney wants silly vibes but Matt and Collin take the assignment WAY too seriously), the Rommies reconvene for the next episode of their Unconventional Trilogy run. Listen in as they ostensibly discuss Matthew Vaughn's second entry in his Kingsman franchise, but mostly just use that as a jumping off point to discuss the more important topic at hand: (Daddy) Pedro Pascal.
Years after a failed attempt at recording a pobcass, the Rommies return to their respective home studios to finally finish what they started: talking about the Cornetto Trilogy. Listen in as they try to work through complicated feelings about this film in comparison to the other two, make wild (but maybe not actually that wild?) connections to Lord of the Rings, and fulfill their obligation to never miss an opportunity to praise Pierce Brosnan's number one role: “singing” “SOS” in Mamma Mia! (2008).
Continuing their run of Unconventional Trilogies, the Rommies return to spoofy ol' England for a quick bite of Classico Cornetto. Join them as they discuss all of the recurring bits, visual gags, and references to the first film in an otherwise unconnected sequel, and stick around as Matt drops an extremely controversial James Bond take, Tierney considers a hypothetical gluten AND dairy free Cornetto option, and they both call Collin out for his questionable Edgar Wright opinions.
For the next segment of their Unconventional Trilogies series, the Rommies turn their attention to the first entry in Tierney's selection of the iconic genre(s) spoofing Cornetto Trilogy. Listen in as they do a complete 180 away from the quiet, dramatic stylings of Dickie Links into the visual flair and comedic genius of Edgar Wright, and stick around as they try to determine which of them could successfully navigate a zombie apocalypse. The answer may (read: definitely won't) surprise you!
In honor of the film's strong showing across numerous Best of 2023 lists/critics groups' awards (and definitely that reason only), the Rommies have decided to finally release their long delayed episode covering Collin's favorite film of the year. After finishing the Before Trilogy, listen in as they shift their attention to this “spin-off” entry to discuss another emotionally compelling/devastating decades-spanning love story.
The Rommies take one final trip to Europe to catch up with Jesse and Celine in the concluding* chapter of the Before Trilogy. Listen in as they discuss the various deviations this film takes from the preceding chapters and whether or not they were effective in closing out** these characters' story. Finally, after two of the Rommies have their own brutal fight towards the end of the episode, stick around to find out if they too will be able to reconcile before it's all over… *hopefully not concluding **hopefully not closing out
The journey through the Before Trilogy continues as the Rommies welcome a very special guest to talk about the second entry in the series. Join them as they take a casual stroll (on a strict time limit) through one of the biggest cities in the world (but only a four block radius of it) while debating the optimism/pessimism of love in your 30s (and/or whether or not to condone adultery).
After a little* hiatus, the Rommies are back to kick off a new season looking at Unconventional Trilogies. In this episode, Collin gets things started with the first film (importantly, NOT the third film) in one of his favorite movie series of all time. Listen in as the Rommies Bill O'Reilly their way through a new format, fall in love with Jesse/Celine falling in love with Celine/Jesse, and throw a few strays in Austria's general direction. *extremely long
The Rommies watched Broadcast News. Sorry it's 14 weeks late. *clears throat* For the final film of the 2023 Festival, the Rommies go back to a simpler time where the hair and outfits were insane, but the news was not (... yet). After clearing up some initial Hurt confusion, they discuss the timeless nature of this classic rom-com-dram, debate the ethics of certain characters' journalistic choices, and praise everything about Holly Hunter. Finally, stick around as Matt introduces a new category, and Collin and Tierney reveal one of Matt's most special collections.
For Matt's final selection of the 2023 festival, the Rommies don their fanciest dresses made of shoes and hit the road for some drag shenanigans. Listen in as they discuss how progressive this film was for its time (and how relevant it remains today), heap praise on the impeccable script (and costumes throughout), and implore George Miller to give us the crossover event the world so desperately needs.
For Tierney's last pick of this year's festival, the Rommies revisit Quentin Tarantino's love letter to Cinema™️. After revealing some surprising changes of heart about the film as a whole, the Rommies dive in to discuss the immaculate vibes, the fairy tale elements, and the potentially undercooked nature of certain characters/subplots, followed by a healthy debate over the use of violence in this and other Tarantino films.
In a full-circle moment of Director Bullshit synergy, Collin's next selection for this year's festival is this 1974 paranoia thriller classic. How fair was Marvel's comparison between this film and a Captain America movie? Listen in to find out! Also, be sure to stick around to hear the Rommies dig into all of the chillingly effective aspects of this film that make it just as relevant today as it was 50 years ago.
For Matt's next pick of the Festival, he decided to give the Rommies a really bad time by selecting Denis Villeneuve's 2013 American breakout. Join them as they talk through this beautifully made but brutal to watch film, discuss its place in Villeneuve's filmography to date, and … debate the action movie star bonafides of Tom Cruise vs Keanu Reeves?
After weeks of prelude, the Rommies have finally made it to the film that inspired Tierney's entire theme of this year's festival. Listen in as Tierney sings her highest praises of this innovative take on a sports biopic (“bye-opic”? “bio-pick”?), Matt and Collin harmonize over their love of the incredible comedic chops of Paul Walter Hauser, and the Rommies collectively work their way through the deep ensemble of excellent needle drops sprinkled throughout the movie.
After much confusion (“is it the animated music one? is it the nuclear meltdown one?”), the Rommies finally sorted it out for Collin's next pick of the Fest. Join them as they discuss what works and what doesn't about this extremely unique movie musical, fawn over the immense hotness of the respective leads, and stand in awe of the immaculate ending (which Damien Chazelle may or may not have shamelessly ripped off for his own movie musical 50 years later).
After some internal debate of his own, Matt finally settled on this 2011 uber indie as his next pick for this year's festival. Join the Rommies as they discuss the emotional roller coaster contained within this beautiful film. Plus, stick around for Tierney and Collin tag-teaming against Matt's crackpot theories and Collin soap-boxing against his beloved Academy for not appreciating this film appropriately.
After a lot of internal turmoil and debate, Tierney finally settled on returning the pob to its Wes Anderson roots for her next selection of the Festival. Listen in as the Rommies do an impromptu rehash of their personal rankings, discuss the innocence and awkwardness (and inappropriateness?) of young love, and settle on the TRUE Moment of 2023: Balaban's 11-year-old sick fits.
In a surprising turn of events, Collin's next selection for the Festival was quite well received by The Rommies across the board! Did that mean that they would show this classic the respect it deserves? In an unsurprising turn of events, nope! Listen in as they talk Some About Eve, Mostly About Not Eve, and, in Matt's opinion, Too Much About “Bette Davis Eyes.” (But be sure to stick around as a Friend of the Pob stops by to school them on all the wonderful things this film has to offer!)
For Matt's next selection of this year's Festival, the Rommies go for a swim to investigate the seedy underbelly of one of Los Angeles's most prominent neighborhoods. Alternatively, they sit around their bizarrely well-furnished apartment and dream up a vast conspiracy just to have something to do. In either case, join them as they debate this flawed, but at times fascinating, addition to the stoner noir canon.
The Rommies (and a very special first-time guest!) pack up the car and head out for a summer (month? week? day?) in the Catskills to discuss Tierney's next pick for the festival. While there, they meet Carrie Frances D'Watermelon-Houseman, and together they team up to change the minds of snooty old white people through pobbing. Listen in as they praise this film for its 80s ridiculousness and debate perhaps the most important cinematic unanswered question of all time.
With his first selection of this year's Festival, Collin had the sheer audacity to pick (apparently) the wrong 1940 Cary Grant comedy. While many consider this film to be one of the greatest of all time, the Rommies are considerably more divided, so listen in to find out who falls into which camp (the answer may surprise you!) and then argue about the movie's merits (and demerits).
In a fun quirk of timing, the Rommies gather to discuss Matt's first pick for this year's festival mere weeks after its meteoric rise up the rankings of Sight & Sound's iconic, decennial list of the Greatest Films of All Time. Listen in as Matt and Tierney highlight all the things that make this such a beloved film all these years later, while Collin simultaneously tries to process his (generally indifferent) feelings on the French New Wave in real time.
Welcome back for the 4th (Semi-)Annual One F Film Festival aka somewhere between the 3rd and 7th season of the pob! This time around, Tierney is kicking things off with a Coen Brothers classic. Join the Rommies as they (clumsily) ease their way back into the pobbing groove, sing the praises of goofy Clooney (and all iterations of Tim Blake Nelson), and clear the floor for Matt to let his [F]reek Mythology flag fly.
The Rommies wrap up their Kubrick Retrospect-ish as they discuss The Shining, just in time for Halloween! Will they be able to navigate through their labyrinth of tangents about why hotels are gross, kissing ghosts, poor Shelley Duvall, and how many episodes of One Piece there are? All talk and no tangents make Jack a dull pob. Featuring returning special guest & faux-Listener, Jim!
The Rommies are back for the penultimate entry in their Stanley Kubrick retrospectish! They're joined by friend of the pob Becca Sita to discuss Kubrick's iconic fun family road trip film. Listen in as they discuss the differences between the movie and the book, what worked and didn't work for each of them, provide impromptu Kubrick film rankings, and try to answer the age old question: “Is Stanley Kubrick bad at sex??”
After the double-whammy disappointment of a bad Kubrick and the tamest orgy ever put on screen, the Rommies rebound to continue their retrospect-ish with his iconic (anti-)war film. Listen in as they discuss the effectiveness of the messaging throughout its two distinct sections, while Matt works through his feelings on war movies and Tierney works through her unique childhood connection to the American military. Finally, Collin forgets the overarching premise of the pob and hijacks the conversation to wax poetic about one of his favorite TV series finales of all time.
In honor of the Rommies hitting this momentous achievement, they decided to continue their Kubrick retrospective with his crazy sex party themed film. Listen in to find out if they felt like the movie's horniness was adequate for this important milestone, and then stick around as they determine how it fits into the various filmographies of the major players involved (including debating the question, “Are we sure this even IS a Kubrick film??”).
After years of either being too scared to try or being too upset by the first 5 minutes to continue watching, the Rommies finally gathered up their courage to force themselves to get through Kubrick's iconic dystopian crime/horror film. Listen in as they discuss how the experience measured up to their expectations and then dive into the film's various layers hiding underneath all the violence. Finally, stick around as they have a lively debate about what truly constitutes a director saying, “Fuck you.” to his/her audience.
After a brief holiday hiatus, the Rommies return to their Kubrick deep dive with a look at his classic period piece character study. Join them and their special guest as they discuss their initial reactions to the film (it was a first viewing for most!), the gorgeous cinematography, and the surprising amount of humor throughout the film. Finally (and perhaps hastily given this is only the third episode of the run), they debate where this film falls within the larger Kubrick oeuvre.
duh dum. duuuh dum. duh dum duh dum Duh Dum DUH DUM—BAH BAH BAH! In this bonus, holiday episode, the Rommies discuss Spielberg's all-time classic that Collin (after years of begging) finally got Matt and Tierney to watch! Listen in as they (and a special guest!) discuss all the things that not only made this movie a smashing success in 1975 but also continue to make it one of the best blockbusters ever all these years later.
The Rommies continue their Kubrick deep dive with a look at one of the greatest satires of all time. This week, they're joined by Becca Sita, Tierney's long time friend and fellow Peter Sellers stan. Listen in as they discuss the experience of watching this movie in the current climate, highlight some timeless comedic bits, and attempt to make peace with/develop affection for the exploding device.
The Rommies kick off their Kubrick Deep Dive with his seminal sci-fi classic. They begin by sharing their personal Kubrick connections before moving into discussing all of the things that still make this movie great even after all these years. Finally, they spend some time debating what the fuck the end of this movie means before adding a few new categories to the regular rotation.
It's been several months since the Rommies have last recorded. They have been scattered across the multiverse. Against all odds, they are desperately trying to reunite to give Listener new episodes. Can they bridge the gaps of space and time to find each other once more? If so, what will that future hold? Tune in to find out! (Exclusively in Pobcass feeds, Summer 2022.)
Now that they've gotten all of The Batman talk out of the way, Matt, Collin, and Jim can move on to other pressing matters: discussing all of the other Batmens! Join them as they ponder Hollywood's obsession with this specific superhero, rank the various cinematic iterations, and shower Mask of the Phantasm with all of the love that Warner Brothers never has.
