Send us Fan MailShaq in a DC Comics superhero suit should be an automatic good time, but Steel (1997) somehow lands in the uncanny valley between Saturday afternoon fun and “please take this seriously.” We rewatch it scene by scene and call out the exact moments where the movie could have leaned into camp, tightened the story, or just admitted the premise is ridiculous. Instead, we get tanks creeping through the LA hills, a sonic weapon demo that goes sideways, and cops who treat chasing a seven-foot armored vigilante like a casual commute. We dig into what works (the self-aware free throw jokes, a few surprisingly solid sonic effects, the magnet hammer chaos) and what doesn't (plot jumps, over-explained police work, and character dynamics that never pick a lane). Judd Nelson's villain energy is a highlight, mostly because watching him posture up at Shaq will never not be funny. And yes, we talk about the moment the movie goes fully off the rails: reverse psychology saves the day, and Sparks' wheelchair turns into an action-movie arsenal in a finale that's equal parts confusing and unforgettable. After we close the Steel case file, we shift to what we're watching lately, including new TV picks, plus a detour into a comedy podcast interview that left us with questions about Paul Walter Hauser. We also tee up next week's plan to hit the new Naked Gun. Subscribe for more movie breakdowns, share this with a friend who loves a lovable mess, and leave us a review with your pick for the most baffling superhero movie.Written lovingly by AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

Directed by Peter Farrelly, Balls Up is the action comedy film starring Mark Wahlberg and Paul Walter Hauser. Marketing executives Brad (Mark Wahlberg) and Elijah (Paul Walter Hauser) go “balls out” and pitch a bold full‑coverage condom sponsorship with the World Cup. After their drunken celebration in Brazil sparks a global scandal, they must outrun furious fans, criminals, and power-hungry officials to salvage their careers and make it home alive. We break down all things soccer / football madness, old-school comedy, and the appeal of "full coverage".
WrestleMania reactions, Raptors playoff frustration, and chaos around candy binges, gym etiquette, and accidentally swallowing toothpaste. The episode also features Maurie's interviews with Heated Rivalry costume designer Hanna Puley, Mark Wahlberg and Paul Walter Hauser on Balls Up, and Devon Hansen, the son of Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, talking about the historic Artemis II mission. Plus, a Helluva Story that has the room stunned as one listener explains how they went to sleep for surgery and woke up with a completely different accent.

Arrested and subsequently released the duo find themselves to be hunted by all of Brazil and ultimately end up in the compound of the countries leading drug cartel leader. Tune into find out what Andrew and Ted thought of this action / comedy.
Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy fly solo on most of the movies this week, but they still have nine titles to talk about. Lena Headey discovers she may have created the bullet that killed her son (Ballistic). A strange friendship develops between two disparate young men when one tries to maybe stop the other from committing a school shooting (Our Hero, Balthazar). Barbie Ferreira plays a music critic who gets involved with the band she is covering (Mile End Kicks). The latest comedy from Peter Farrelly has Mark Wahlberg and Paul Walter Hauser as the creators of a very unusual condom (Balls Up). Keanu Reeves is a Hollywood star trying to prevent an embarrassing video from getting out (Outcome). There's a documentary about the creator of Saturday Night Live (Lorne). Bob Odenkirk is in action mode again taking on a whole town in the latest from Ben Wheatley (Normal). Steven Soderbergh's latest has Ian McKellen as an artist who hires a forger to finish his paintings (The Christophers). Finally, the director of Evil Dead Rise gets his name above the familiar title of his even more familiar horror film. The grisly body horror flick "Lee Cronin's The Mummy" owes a lot more to "The Exorcist" than Boris Karloff or Brendan Fraser. A little girl goes missing and, eight years later, she's discovered to be alive and possessed by an ancient Egyptian demon. There are some effectively scary moments, but the movie is overlong and over reliant on gruesome makeup effects. Writer/director Lee Cronin had success reviving the “Evil Dead” franchise, but this one should have remained buried. Let's hope it's a wrap on this version of The Mummy. If you want to see two brilliant actors go toe-to-toe, the sly comedy "The Christophers" is the movie for you. Sir Ian McKellen and Michaela Cole star in the tale of a once famous painter now living as a virtual hermit who makes a little cash doing personalized Cameo videos. The painter's estranged children hire a woman to pose as his assistant and forge his unfinished paintings so that they can sell them upon his death. James Corden and Jessica Gunning are effectively churlish as the offspring. Director Stephen Soderberg continues to expand his reach with “The Christophers,” a funny, smart and engaging movie. It's good to try to find something positive in even the worst movies, but there's nothing remotely redeeming in the criminally atrocious Amazon Prime comedy, "Balls Up." Mark Wahlberg and Paul Walter Hauser play employees of a condom company who ruin a World Cup soccer game in Brazil and go on the run from angry fans. Not only is it not funny, but it's also intended to offend. “Balls Up” is certainly successful on that count. Director Peter Farrelly should have his Oscar for "Green Day" revoked.

Bob Odenkirk playing a small-town interim sheriff squaring off against the Yakuza is not a sentence that should make sense, let alone sell a movie. It sounds like a dare, or the kind of idea you giggle at before moving on. And yet, “Normal” takes that slightly absurd premise and treats it with just enough sincerity, grit, and tonal whiplash to make you lean in instead of check out (read our review). The film, starring Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul,” “Nobody”) and written by Derek Kolstad— the screenwriting architect behind all the “John Wick” films— follows a small-town sheriff named Ulysses who finds himself pulled into a spiraling situation involving organized crime, buried history, and a small, quiet town that's about to get a lot louder.READ MORE: ‘Balls Up': Mark Wahlberg, Paul Walter Hauser and Peter Farrelly Go All-In On R-Rated Chaos, ‘Transformers,' ‘Resident Evil', ‘I Play Rocky,' Marvel and More [The Discourse Podcast]It works because “Normal” doesn't behave like a single movie. It slyly shapeshifts. A dry, slightly offbeat character piece suddenly turns tense and violent, then veers into dark comedy, a thriller, and back again. The movie wants you to feel those shifts, to adjust in real time, preferably with a crowd that's hooting and hollering right alongside you.
The comedy “Balls Up” isn't messing around. Yes, the title is a dick joke. The plot is a dick joke. And yes, the script is packed with dick jokes. It's as immature and as dumb as they come, and yet, it oddly works because it just commits so hard and earnestly to the bit. Directed by Peter Farrelly—who knows a thing or two about immature, purile comedies with lots of dick jokes like “Dumb and Dumber,” “There'sSomething About Mary,” etc. — “Balls Up” does not ease you into its insanity. It sprints straight at you with it and keeps building, stacking absurdity on top of absurdity, until it becomes this weirdly impressive feat of endurance. And thanks to the sure hands of its director and stars, it somehow works. The film follows two condom marketing executives/salespeople, Brad (Mark Wahlberg) and Elijah (Paul Walter Hauser), who pitch a bold full‑coverage condom sponsorship with the World Cup. After their drunken antics in Brazil spark a global scandal, they must outrun furious fans, criminals, and power-hungry officials to salvage their careers and make it home alive. On this episode of The Discourse, Mike DeAngelo is joined by Mark Wahlberg, Paul Walter Hauser, and director Peter Farrelly (“Green Book”) to break down how you even begin to make a movie like this, why commitment is everything in comedy, and how something this dumb can actually be smart.
Louis Virtel is joined by comedian/actress Ivy Wolk to react to Coachella's first weekend with notable performances by Sabrina Carpenter and Justin Bieber. They also discuss the season 3 premiere of HBO's Euphoria and unpack the varying levels of stardom the likes of Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi have achieved after Euphoria's first season all the way back in 2019. The episode kicks off with Sean Oliver introducing Kevin Nash to the latest viral TikTok terminology, leading to a candid and humorous exchange about modern dating culture and physical standards. The duo reflects on how societal observations have shifted from the "meat gazing" days of the past to the era of digital trends, all while Big Sexy offers his unfiltered take on the prevalence of cosmetic enhancements in today's world. Nash and Oliver dive into the rapidly shifting landscape of Washington D.C., dissecting the sudden departure of Pam Bondi from the cabinet. The conversation moves beyond the headlines to explore the "smoking guns" of the Epstein case and the intense bipartisan pressure that led to her exit. Nash doesn't hold back on his critique of political "flippancy" and the strategic distancing occurring within the party as private sector transitions loom. The dialogue takes a serious turn toward the escalating tensions in the Middle East and the conflicting reports surrounding the Straits of Hormuz. Kevin and Sean grapple with the "bullshit" of modern diplomacy and the mixed messaging coming from leadership. The discussion then hits closer to home as they debate the complexities of the 14th Amendment and the controversial legal arguments surrounding birthright citizenship. With the showcase of the immortals rapidly approaching, the "Kliq This" crew breaks down the heavy hitters on the WrestleMania card. Nash provides a masterclass in booking logic, analyzing the high-stakes clash between CM Punk and Roman Reigns. He explores the necessity of a fighting champion in the modern era and questions whether the "process" of storytelling will prioritize pure athleticism or the classic psychology of a definitive finish. The episode wraps up with a look toward the heavens as the Artemis 2 mission prepares for its journey. Kevin recounts the surreal experience of watching a rocket launch from his own backyard alongside a quarter of a million spectators. From skeptical takes on lunar history to the existential reasons behind space colonization and doomsday bunkers, the guys question why we're still "fucking around in space" while the planet faces a 40-year countdown. Sony didn't wait long to release the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer we've all been craving and oh, how it delivered! Unsurprisingly, the trailer now holds the record for the most-watched ever, garnering 718.6 million views in a 24-hour period. The new film shows Peter Parker banding together with familiar characters such as Bruce Banner and Frank Castle while he anonymously serves New York City as Spider-Man. Let's not delay - who wants to take a bite out of this big apple first? It's a three-for-one MCU week, with the announcement that a second season of Wonder Man is beginning production, and a title plus release date for the Punisher special presentation. All of the creatives behind Wonder Man are returning for the second season, including Destin Daniel Cretton as director and executive producer. Marvel announced the news with a social media post of the front of the script for the next season. Today, the film studio let us know that the Punisher tv special will be called “One Last Kill,” and is set to drop on May 12 the week after the finale of Daredevil: Born Again season two. So much here to bite off, what are we chewing on the most?Remember how all we can do is rave about Project Hail Mary? In this episode of Cinema Verbi, Father Matt and Father Brian reflect on the movies they watched in 2025 before diving into a discussion about Wicked (2024) and its sequel, Wicked: For Good (2025). They explore the evolution of the story from Gregory Maguire's original novel to the Broadway musical, and finally to the big-screen adaptations. Our hosts discuss themes of friendship and debate the value of reinterpreting old stories, examining how these films reshape (or don't reshape) our understanding of the iconic Wizard of Oz (1939) film.(0:26) Father Matt and Father Brian open the show by welcoming listeners to 2026 and reflecting on their experience hosting a live episode on It's a Wonderful Life (1946) last month. They highlight the communal nature of cinema and the importance of gathering and sharing films together.(2:24) The priests discuss their Letterboxd stats, including the number of films watched, total hours logged, favorite actors, and prominent themes from 2025. Father Matt highlights Paul Walter Hauser as his most-watched actor of 2025, and they share their first, last, and favorite movies of the year.(12:41) The conversation shifts to the episode's main topic: Wicked (2024) and its sequel, Wicked: For Good (2025). Father Brian explains the significance of these movies as adaptations of the Broadway musical and Gregory Maguire's novel, noting how the story has been reimagined for a new generation of viewers.(15:25) They discuss the history of the “Wicked” novel, its 2003 Broadway debut, and its long-running popularity. Father Brian shares his personal experience seeing the musical on tour many times, while Father Matt has only seen it performed once in East Lansing. They also analyze the decision to divide Wicked into two movies, comparing it to other adaptations like Dune. They debate whether the second movie truly adds value or simply prolongs the story for commercial reasons.(19:10) Father Matt and Father Brian explore how Wicked reinterprets the original Wizard of Oz, giving the Wicked Witch of the West a more nuanced perspective. They debate moments in the film that “tip their hat” to the original Oz story, weighing cleverness and homage against fan service and overuse of nostalgia.(30:05) The hosts examine the film's deeper themes, including power, manipulation, and the treatment of animals. They highlight how Glinda and Elphaba's friendship develops despite their differences and reflect on the two films' enduring message of friendship, personal growth, and the lasting impact others have on our lives.(41:33) The episode concludes with our hosts sharing their “seeds of the word” ratings for the films, based on how clearly they saw goodness, truth, and beauty reflected in the story.

In this episode of Pop Culture Pastor, Dave and Cody sprint headfirst into Edgar Wright's new adaptation of The Running Man, asking the big question: is this the movie that officially crowns Glen Powell as the next great everyman action star? The guys start with a wild but oddly wholesome news item: Timothée Chalamet calling Adam Sandler “one of the best actors of all time” during their “Sandler x Chalamet” event. That launches a fun conversation about Sandler's career arc — from “guy who just makes vacation movies with his buddies” to secretly one of the most versatile actors working, thanks to turns in Punch-Drunk Love and Uncut Gems. There's also a quick detour into DC's Lanterns delay, James Gunn's DCU, and why everything around Warner Bros. feels just a little… wobbly. Then it's full-on Running Man review mode:how this version leans back into Stephen King's original dystopian nightmarewhy Glen Powell feels like the spiritual heir to Bruce Willishow Colman Domingo and Josh Brolin absolutely cook in limited screen timewhy the Hunters are a huge missed opportunity, and how Alan Ritchson could've fixed the whole problem with one menacing glareplus a Deeper Themes segment on media, virtue signaling, and why the real villain might be the human heart, not just “rich bad guys in offices.”In The Lobby, listeners ask about the many faces of Cody (Contrarian Cody, Capitalist Cody, Chaotic Cody, and more), dream podcast guests (Scorsese, Paul Walter Hauser, Weird Al, Harrison Ford), and whether a live-action Legend of Zelda movie can truly be the Lord of the Rings of video game adaptations.Oh, and yes—there's talk of Christmas playlists, Die Hard–inspired Christmas shirts, and why Michael Cera is somehow the loser of the movie simply because there wasn't enough of him.
On this episode, Matt & Eric review Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White, Jeremy Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Stephen Graham and Odessa Young.
For this week's main podcast review, Ema Sasic, Katie Johnson, and Tom O'Brien join me to discuss the latest film from Scott Cooper, "Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere," starring Jeremy Allen White, Jeremy Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Stephen Graham, Odessa Young, Gaby Hoffmann, Marc Maron & David Krumholtz. Written and directed by Scott Cooper and based on the 2023 book "Deliver Me from Nowhere" by Warren Zanes, as well as some elements from Bruce Springsteen's autobiography "Born to Run," it chronicles Springsteen's personal and professional struggles during the conception of his 1982 album "Nebraska." The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its performances, emotional honesty, and character-driven story of confronting depression and turning pain into art. What did we think of it? Please tune in as we discuss the performances, writing, direction, tone, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! An image taking up most of the cover shows an anatomical cutout of a human head and brain leading to speculation that Brainiac will be the villain Superman and perhaps Lex Luthor have to team up against. Matt Reeves also chimed in on the same topic, though separately, and shared that the villain for The Batman: Part II will be a character that has “never really been done” in a film before.
