This week, Scott joined his Lawfare colleagues Benjamin Wittes, Natalie Orpett, and Anastasiia Lapatina for a rare, all-in-person discussion of the week's big national security news, including:“Chicken Kyiv, Served Cold.” The Trump administration's vision for a peace settlement in Ukraine is coming into focus—and it's not the one many Ukrainians and Europeans were hoping for. In negotiations that have largely excluded Ukrainian and European partners—and amidst a barrage of hostile attacks on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's democratic legitimacy—the Trump administration appears to be insisting on some U.S. stake in Ukraine's rare earth minerals while remaining unwilling to support Ukraine's NATO membership and resistant to providing hard security guarantees in response. Are the contours of such a deal something Ukraine can agree to? And will it advance U.S. and Ukrainian national security interests?“Euro Vision.” In some of his first comments since emerging from elections as Germany's new chancellor, Friedrich Merz called for European independence from the United States, in light of the Trump administration's increasing neglect (and even hostility) to longstanding transatlantic partnerships. And Ukraine may be the first front for this new policy orientation, as European officials have suggested an increased willingness to deploy ground troops to Ukraine, increase their own assistance levels, and even make an alternate offer for access to Ukraine's rare earth minerals. How much potential is there for a truly independent European foreign policy? And what will it mean for U.S. national interests?“Baywatch Reruns.” As part of its aggressive campaign against undocumented migrants, the Trump administration has expanded its use of the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay for what it claims to be the “worst of the worst” undocumented migrants involved in violent crimes. But recent reporting has cast serious doubt on whether everyone who has been detained at Guantanamo meets this qualification, while others have raised questions about the conditions in which detainees are being held and the legal basis for the involvement of military personnel. What is the Trump administration really trying to accomplish? And is Guantanamo Bay once again becoming a black mark on American rule of law?In object lessons, Natalie confirmed the existence of the year's most top-secret, exclusive diplomatic gathering—the Lawfare Baby Summit. Anastasiia unveiled Escalation, a long-anticipated narrative podcast series from Lawfare and Goat Rodeo about the history of the U.S.-Ukraine relationship. Scott—in true elder Millennial fashion—identified with the gracefully aging, definitely not old, Before Trilogy from Richard Linklater. And Ben marked the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine with a somber reflection on the sparse turnout at a Lincoln Memorial rally over the weekend, underscoring the ongoing challenge of building mass political movements from within small communities. We value your feedback! Tras ver The Before Trilogy por primera vez el año pasado escribí un ensayo, el cual publiqué en Facebook, y luego decidí convertir este ensayo en un video. #beforetrilogy #criterion #richardlinklater COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER Copyright disclaimer under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Ryan and Dylan finally conclude their review of Richard Linklater's Before Trilogy, almost two years since they started, and once again get personal and deep as they reflect on the past and bid farewell to this long-running saga.
Filmmaker Richard Linklater's movies span blockbusters, such as School of Rock, cerebral indie classics like Boyhood, and a hard-to-define The Before Trilogy. His most recent film, Hit Man, is a thriller, but it picks up on many themes that Linklater has explored before, such as identity and masculinity. Today, he reflects on the film in conversation with Lilah. -------Our film critic Danny Leigh's review of Hit Man is here: https://on.ft.com/4fGIDidDanny also spoke with Richard Linklater in 2018 about his portrayal of masculinity in the movie Last Flag Flying: https://on.ft.com/3Va6v5L-------The show is ending in early January. Richard Linklater returns to Cinema Effect with a bit of a departure from the Before Trilogy with his new Netflix movie, Hit Man. Starring Glen Powell as a philosophy teacher who also goes undercover for the cops as a side gig, the film sees him take on a multitude of personas in order to convince as a contract killer. But problems start to arise when he breaks protocol to let a desperate woman off the hook. While some questionable narrative choices were made, this sexy crime flick still manages to entertain throughout in large part to Powell's comedic chops, and some excitingly tense scenes. The film also claims that real hitmen don't exist, which we find hard to believe. So if you've ever hired a hitman please let us know in the comments. This episode as Hitman has been out for a while in cinema but now hitting Netflix, one of many films starring Glen Powell this year. But we are not focusing him just yet. We are focusing on Hitman's director, the acclaimed, versatile and slightly underrated in my opinion, Richard Linklater. Dalton's informal "Carmilla Trilogy" continues with The Invisible Man's Revenge, a sequel to our breakout episode from way back in 2022! The fanbase is split as to what to expect from this one. If there's any magic in this world, it's in the space between Mark and a great movie as he tries to figure out what makes Before Sunrise so romantic, how the film is a masterpiece of understated structure, and why nobody has described the brilliance of Richard Linklater better than Richard Linklater describing the brilliance of Eric Rohmer.https://markoveranalysesfilm.buzzsprout.com/https://www.markoveranalysesstory.com/https://twitter.com/overanalysefilm

Dumpuary: Battle of the Genres continues with a new fighter, representing the Romance genre, hailing from Vienna - Richard Linklater's 1995 franchise-starter, Before Sunrise! In honor of the film's strong showing across numerous Best of 2023 lists/critics groups' awards (and definitely that reason only), the Rommies have decided to finally release their long delayed episode covering Collin's favorite film of the year. After finishing the Before Trilogy, listen in as they shift their attention to this “spin-off” entry to discuss another emotionally compelling/devastating decades-spanning love story.
The Rommies take one final trip to Europe to catch up with Jesse and Celine in the concluding* chapter of the Before Trilogy. Listen in as they discuss the various deviations this film takes from the preceding chapters and whether or not they were effective in closing out** these characters' story. Finally, after two of the Rommies have their own brutal fight towards the end of the episode, stick around to find out if they too will be able to reconcile before it's all over… *hopefully not concluding **hopefully not closing out
The journey through the Before Trilogy continues as the Rommies welcome a very special guest to talk about the second entry in the series. Join them as they take a casual stroll (on a strict time limit) through one of the biggest cities in the world (but only a four block radius of it) while debating the optimism/pessimism of love in your 30s (and/or whether or not to condone adultery).
"Before Midnight" is the third and final installment of the "Before" Trilogy directed by Richard Linklater. We all know his work of "Dazed and Confused", "A Scanner Darkly", "School of Rock" and "Boyhood". His film tackles existentialism between relationships and their own with the characters of Jesse and Céline as they are older and they are parents. I dig the film for it's realism, how deep it goes with the charaters that are tackling the issues that comes with relationships, familes and blended families. This is a film that is important to watch, showing the slice of life that we are not alone with our issues and insecurities. I really appreciate it too because we are able to relate to the film, it crosses all kinds of boundaries.Four out of four tokes.
This is the final part of our "Before Trilogy" discussion. In this episode we discuss Richard Linklater's "Before Midnight" starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. The film follows the previous film, "Before Sunset", where we see Celine and Jesse 10 years after they reunited in France. Here we discuss the realities that the film presented about what true and everlasting love really means. The previous two films showed us what it's like to fall into raw emotion, but this film presents what it means and what it takes to keep it going. You know what they say: It's always hard to follow the original with something equally as good or better. Well here on the pod we are going to prove that theory is false, as Max & Shane return to do their second bracket, and appropriately this time we discuss the best sequel of all time! 64 sequels spanning almost 100 years, ranging from the big budget film franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, the MCU, the Fast & the Furious, & 007, to the second parts in iconic trilogies like Back to the Future, the Before Trilogy, & the Godfather, to the one off sequels movies like Paddington 2, Gremlins 2 The New Batch, & Blade Runner 2049. Per usual, you can expect lots of debates, discussions, and random side tangents about other movies, but just like any good sequel, you won't know what's coming next... or you might if you are familiar with every sequel ever made.
Ryan and Dylan get personal as they talk about the first installment of Richard Linklater's Before Trilogy.

SEASON FINALE! The Horses ride off into the sunset, taking one last trip with Jesse & Celine in the Before Trilogy's final (?) installment, Before Midnight. The 2013 romantic drama picks up with Jesse & Celine in their early 40's, as they break out into an argument that will test the fabric of their entire relationship. The Horses discuss arguing with partners, the inherent challenges of building a relationship and being alive, divorce, and what it takes to believe in love against all odds. Is love meant to last forever? Can it? What does that take? Lots of "Lmao's" and "Rofl's" in this episode of our comedy and film podcast.

We continue our time with Jesse and Céline, this time in Paris nine years after they first met. That's right – in this episode, we're digging into Richard Linklater's 2004 film “Before Sunset,” the second film in his Before trilogy starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.
The gang falls in love in while traveling abroad this week, as they review the 1st in the Before Trilogy from Richard Linklater, Before Sunrise. Follow Jessie and Celine as they meet on a train, and spend all night walking the streets of Vienna falling madly in love with each other. Is that possible? Or is it just fantasy? No Matty this week, beloved listeners, but Ezra and Helena are forging ahead to have a winding discussion on the things they've seen recently this week on Sneople! In typical Sneople fashion, they cover everything from Star Wars to The Before Trilogy to the Recobbled version of The Thief and the Cobbler. They wrap up the ep with Ezra's takes on the new Rings of Power show — and you KNOW that includes lots of excellent Silmarillion lore! Now they did originally say this was going to be a mini ep and yes it IS the length of a normal ep but really, would you expect anything else?

The series might be drawing to a close, but we'll always have it in our memories. This week we're closing out our series on Richard Linklater's Before Trilogy, covering Before Midnight. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy turn in two more MASTERCLASS performances as we venture around Greece. We're sappy, nostalgic, and try the FUTILE exercise that is ranking these films, but through all of that it is a VERY good time.
