We have reached the glittering grand finale of our Pride Month celebration on We Drink & We Watch Things, and we are going out in style! For our "T" selection in the lineup, we are packing our bags, boarding a battered lavender bus named Priscilla, and heading deep into the Australian outback with Stephan Elliott's iconic 1994 masterpiece, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Pour yourself something absolutely fabulous - perhaps Lemar's It's Not Purple, It's Lavender cocktail - as we journey into the heart of the desert, where the heels are high and the survival instincts are higher. This week, we celebrate the extraordinary trio at the center of this road trip: Hugo Weaving's conflicted Tick/Mitzi, Guy Pearce's chaotic, high-energy Adam/Felicia, and Terrence Stamp's absolutely sublime, deeply dignified performance as Bernadette, a trans woman navigating grief and a world that rarely understands her. We bask in the film's legendary visual triumphs - from the towering silver lamé gown on top of the bus to the jaw-dropping lip-sync numbers in the middle of nowhere - and break down Oscar-winning costumes that managed to turn flip-flops into high fashion. Most importantly, we examine the film's striking balance between brilliant camp comedy and raw, necessary commentary on homophobia, transphobia, and the revolutionary act of queer joy simply refusing to hide.If you've ever wanted to watch three drag queens conquer the outback to the tune of Gloria Gaynor, or if you just want to hear us rave about a film that changed the landscape of queer cinema forever, this is the curtain call you've been waiting for. We're blending our deep adoration for this vibrant classic with our usual casual banter to bring our Pride Month run to a triumphant, sequin-covered close. Finally, a fabulous ending! This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming up. The late, great Terence Stamp's death at the age of 87 has left behind an incredible body of work, but what a gamble The Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert was. He'd never headlined a comedy, he'd never done a musical, he wasn't keen on Australia - and yet he agreed to sign up for a low budget Australian indie that over three decades later, is still awash with stories. The second half of this episode is handed over to director Jay Roach meanwhile, who talks about his new movie, The Roses. On this episode of Paid in Puke, we're having a gay old time in the Australian outback with Stephan Elliott's 1994 debut feature, "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert", starring Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, and Terence Stamp. It tells the story of two drag queens and one trans woman who bring their cabaret act across the country to places both receptive and dangerous. The movie has some Hot Probs (including an inexcusable Asian stereotype character), but it also served as a pioneering film queer cinema, despite the cis maleness of the three lead actors.  We're joined by special guest Lynn Harris: writer, producer, standup comedian and founder and CEO of Gold Comedy. We discuss the origin of pride parades, the proverbial desert that is trans representation, how far drag has come since the 90s, and some of our favorite modern queens.

This Pride Month, Mark Radulich and Sean Comer celebrate the flamboyant, fearless, and fiercely important legacies of three trailblazing films: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995), and Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001). While each tells its own unique story—from a desert drag road trip across the Australian outback to a heartfelt exploration of gender identity through glam rock cabaret—they are all interconnected by the historical arc of queer visibility in cinema. These films didn't just showcase LGBTQ+ characters—they centered them, in eras where that was still an act of rebellion.Priscilla broke ground internationally, putting Australian queer cinema on the global map and normalizing drag culture long before RuPaul's Drag Race made it mainstream. Just one year later, To Wong Foo introduced Middle America to drag queens with heart, humor, and dignity—starring mainstream Hollywood actors like Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo at the height of their careers. Then came Hedwig, a deeply personal indie musical about gender, trauma, and artistic expression, which has since become a cult favorite and a cornerstone of trans representation in modern film and theater. Together, these films reflect the evolution of queer and trans narratives—from coded subtext to full-throated declarations of identity and humanity.More than just products of their time, these movies pushed culture forward. They asked audiences to look beyond binary norms and embrace love, transformation, and self-expression in all forms. Whether through sequins, ballads, or beat-up buses, these stories assert—loudly and proudly—that queer people, drag performers, and trans individuals deserve joy, complexity, and a place in the cinematic canon. And as we revisit them in 2025, their messages feel just as urgent, defiant, and beautiful as ever.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

In honor of Pride Month and celebrating this film's upcoming 30th Anniversary, it's time to embark on the exciting adventures of three drag queens travelling across the Australian Outback on a bus which actually shares its title with this movie. :) This Oscar-winning cult hit was directed by Stephen Elliott and stars Terrance Stamp, Guy Pearce, and Hugo Weaving....yes THAT Hugo Weaving just about five years before his big break as Agent Smith in The Matrix!  Everyone's glammed up and wearing fantastically elaborate costumes as they give musical performances (mostly lip syncing the hits) to various audiences wherever they stop.  And the eventual goal of this mission?  Apparently so one of them can reunite with a key member of his family....it's all very heartwarming, so let's hit the road!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
