A24's last film of 2016 was 20th Century Women, a slice of life drama featuring a star-studded cast that included Annette Benning, Billy Crudup, Greta Gerwig (director of Barbie), and Elle Fanning. Writer and Director Mike Mills was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for this film. It revolves around a teenager named Jamie (played by Lucas Jade Zumann), his single mom Dorothea (played by Annette Benning), and their unconventional life in Santa Barbara, California where they live in a charming old house with two other tenants. Taking place in 1979, 20th Century Women features one of the greatest soundtracks in A24 history, using music to juxtapose the generations of each of its characters. These get explored in the podcast along with considerations of Jimmy Carter's Crisis of Confidence Speech both historically but also in relation to the various characters who share the same house in the film. The conversation recasts the main themes of the film through the lens of other key films by Mike Mills. Fran and Tom also discuss parent-child relationship, community vs individuality and how all of this relates to history and changes through time. A conversation that brings unexpected depth to a film that might seem 'low stakes' to some.

It's another episode in our inadvertent “looking longingly back into the past” series! Mansi Tiwari joins me for a discussion of two films about relationships between mothers and their children. Can they ever truly know and understand each other? PETITE MAMAN, Céline Sciamma's follow up to PORTRAIT DE LA JEUNE FILLE EN FEU has an unusual solution for this problem, as past and present collide in this wishful movie (5:01). For the gem 20TH CENTURY WOMEN, director Mike Mills let himself be inspired by his own teenage years in the late 1970s. He tells a story about a mother (Annette Bening) trying to raise her son by drafting in two additional quasi-mothers (Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning) (17:01). We also discuss what we've been watching and what we're looking forward too. (Spoilers, it's LAST NIGHT IN SOHO.) Join the discussion on social media @oneforyoupod or write an email to oneforyoupod@gmail.com

Its episode 128 Louisa Maycock (Girls on Tops) and Jake Cuningham (Random Acts and Ghibliotheque podcast) return, this time for Louisa’s choice, Mike Mills’ 20th Century Women. 20th Century Women is a 2016 coming of age comedy-drama written and directed by Mike Mills with a stellar cast of Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup, and introducing Lucas Jade Zumann (not Timothée Chalamet!) It’s 1975 Santa Barbara and Dorothea (Benning) is trying to bring up her son Jamie (Zumann) on her own and making him the best feminist she can with the help of lodgers Abbie (Gerwig with pink hair) and carpenter and mechanic William (Crudup) and neighbour Julie (Fanning). The film follows Jamie through his various rites of passage but also through the life changing moments of Abbie and Dorothea’s realisation that she can’t control his life but she and those around him can guide and advise. This would make a perfect double bill with The Virgin Suicides. A24’s 2016 Oscar-nominated film, 20th Century Women, which takes place in 1979 Southern California is about 1 mother and the 2 women that help raise her 1 boy… that’s a lot of numbers!!! The movie stars Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, and Lucas Jade Zumann and was both directed and written by Mike Mills - the latter of which he was nominated for where he turned traditional screenwriting conventions on its head and innovated some existing techniques to better execute the film. Joan discusses with special guest Joao Gonzalez (aka Soft Glas)! As always, no spoilers!

Sifting through the horror on Netflix, Jess and Andrew were treated to the Ouija nightmare Veronica. Curious about the new Al Pacino HBO movie, Paterno was given a chance. 20th Century Women is streaming on Amazon, and a film that we are ashamed we missed when it first came out. Maybe it was the title, maybe the advertising, but we made a mistake passing up on it before. Andrew revisits "The Misfits", Marilyn Monroe's last film, and a classic that is expiring from Filmstruck soon. Taking a wee break after the recent weeks of sturm and drang for two quieter dramas, before the much belated arrival of Wonder Woman next week, we discuss John Butler's Irish comedy drama Handsome Devils and Mike Mills' semi-autobiographical film 20th Century Women. Handsome Devil is a sweet drama featuring a stand-out performance from Andrew Scott as an English teacher in an Irish boarding school obsessed with sport. Ned (Fionn O'Shea) is an alienated student at the school who is excluded because he has no interest in sport. Subjected to homophobic bullying, he creates a sarcastic outsider persona as a defense. When a new boy arrives at the school and becomes Ned's room-mate (Nicholas Galitzine), early resentment between them slowly evolves into a fragile friendship. But what led to Conor, a stunning rugby player, being expelled from his last school - and what will Ned do once he learns his only friend's secret? Annette Bening's Oscar snub seems more unbelievable now this film is out in Australia. Heading up a stellar cast including Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup, Mike Mills draws on his childhood for this story of a young teenager being raised without a male role model and his strained relationship with his mother. Quietly powerful and featuring interesting digressions into the histories of the characters' lives with archive footage, 20th Century Women is a time capsule from a vanished era of Californian optimism and free thought. This episode is dedicated to the memories of Roger Moore and Dennis Johnson. As always, check us out on Facebook and Twitter @hopscotchfriday, and drop us a rating on iTunes.
We welcome director Mike Mills on to the podcast this week, to discuss his new film '20th Century Women'. Listeners can also win a copy of the soundtrack on Vinyl - check our social media for details on how. After the success of 2010 film 'Beginners', which helped win Christopher Plummer an Oscar Best Supporting Actor, Mike Mills returns with another Semi-Autobiographical film, this time set in the sun drenched Santa Barbara of the 70's. Featuring a late career highlight from Annete Bening, as well as Greta Gerwig, Elle Fanning and Billy Crudup, '20th Century Women' is a warm, kind and clever nostalgia trip rooted around superb central performances. On the podcast this week are Jake Cunningham, Jenna Hobbs and Sam Howlett.Produced and edited by Jake CunninghamMusic supplied by incompetech.comStudio services from csrfm.com Hosted on Acast. The Moorside, which airs on BBC1 at 9pm tonight, is a drama about events surrounding the disappearance of nine year old Shannon Matthews in 2008. Starring Sheridan Smith as Julie Bushby, the woman who orchestrated the hunt for Shannon and Gemma Whelan as Shannon's mother Karen, who was eventually found guilty of the kidnap and false imprisonment of her daughter, the programme has been criticised by some as inappropriate subject matter for a TV show. Executive producer Jeff Pope defends the making of The Moorside and discusses the ethics and challenges of turning real-life events into drama. In 20th Century Women, Annette Bening stars as a freethinking Santa Barbara mother who enlists the help of two young women in raising her adolescent son during a period of cultural and social turmoil. And the nominees are! Now that the 2017 Golden Globe Nominees are announced, we bring our buddy JP on to run through all of the nominations and our picks for all of them, even if we have no clue what we're talking about. Our favorite actors, actresses, movies, and tv shows, nothing gets left out of this one! Home Before Dark hearkens back to a time when you and your friends in the neighborhood were forced inside. Where you discovered a level of brotherhood/sisterhood that could only be forged through playing video games, watching movies, television and discussing the finer things in life over an Orange Lavaburst Hi-C and Bagel Bites. We take the time out to talk about the current games we're playing, movies we've seen recently(new or old) and all the things in between. It's almost that time. The streetlights just came on and you had better leave soon to be Home Before Dark. Find the whole gang on twitter @timherb and @the_ARC1TECT and collectively @HomeB4Dark
