Hello Listeners! In this episode, we had the opportunity to have a conversation with KabeaushéKabeaushé (Kabochi Gitau) creates a captivating vortex of musical styles, merging influences from Nairobi to Berlin, from French Baroque music to hip-hop, from blaxploitation films to the artwork of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Dana and Tom with 5x Club Member, Sara Shea (Host and Creator of Shea Cinema), discuss the Best Picture winner of 1975, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: directed by Milos Forman, written by Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman, cinematography by Haskell Wexler, music by Jack Nitzschke, edited by Richard Chew, Lynzee Klingman, and Sheldon Kahn, starring Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Danny Devito, and Christopher Lloyd.Plot Summary: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a powerful drama directed by Miloš Forman, based on the novel by Ken Kesey. The film stars Jack Nicholson as Randle P. McMurphy, a rebellious man who fakes insanity to avoid prison and is sent to a mental institution. There, he clashes with Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) whose strict control over the patients crushes their spirits. McMurphy's defiance inspires the other men, including the quiet and gentle Chief Bromden (Will Sampson), to rediscover their sense of freedom and individuality. The movie explores themes of authority, conformity, and the human spirit, ultimately showing the cost of resisting oppressive systems.Guest:Sara SheaHost and Creator of Shea Cinema; @sheacinema on X, IGPreviously on 12 Angry Men (1957) Revisit, Barry Lyndon (1975), Shampoo (1975), 2025 Post Oscars Reaction Show, Patton (1970)Chapters:00:00 Introduction, Cast, and Background for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest04:42 Welcome Back, Sara Shea!08:23 Mental Health - Then and Now23:57 Relationship(s) with Cuckoo's Nest32:25 Plot Summary for Cuckoo's Nest33:20 What is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest About?39:44 Did You Know?45:46 First Break46:32 What's Happening with Sara Shea?50:25 The Cinema Legacy Poll Rankings - #25-2101:05:44 Best Performance(s)01:31:09 Best Scene(s)01:38:08 Second Break01:38:48 In Memoriam01:39:13 Best/Funniest Lines01:41:04 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:50:36 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:55:14 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty02:02:57 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness02:11:51 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability02:19:23 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total02:21:02 Remaining Questions for Cuckoo's Nest02:27:16 Thank You to Sara and Remaining Thoughts02:35:35 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or...
For their 216th episode, two haughty film critics, two non-painting dads, and two gold-digging teachers, Will Johnson and Don Shanahan, roar back from a short October haitus with a movie that doesn't try to shout back whatsoever. Stratching off a mutual Stanley Kubrick blind spot, the boys sat through 1975's wannabe opus "Barry Lyndon" and strive to discuss the thematic pull and shread of a point amid the off-the-charts craftsmanship of the respected cinematic master. There is a clear lover and hater on this one. Come learn more and stay for the mutual love and respect that fun movies encapsulate. Is Reform succumbing to the gravitational pull of the far-far-far right or just showing its true, cruel face?

When a man is down on his luck, what is he to do? His fortune squandered, his estate mishandled, his love unfaithful, Barry Lyndon goes to war, and to prison, and to the gambling table, and to Prussia, and to Ireland. He schemes his way, hoping to get back into the good graces of the universe, trying to manifest that happy ending he's put on his vision board. Jessa and Joseph discuss whether Barry is just another manifestation girlie, how politically useful the British found the Irish famine, and other adventures in capitalism and colonialism. It's so hot out there! What better way to defeat the August heat than to watch Santa Claus stuck in his sleigh on a sizzling Florida beach? Who will help him get back to the North Pole? A rag-tag group of homeless minors who have no experience working with animals. Also, the Ice Cream Bunny, whatever that is. FIlm critic Pat McDonald join Collin and Kerry to break down "Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny," one of the absolute weirdest holiday concoctions of all time with a just-barely-stitched-together film from 1972. There are two versions of the film, one containing a detour into the story of Thumbelina, another with Jack and the Beanstalk. None of it makes a lick of sense and it's all just padding to throw out there on the kiddie matinee circuit of the early '70s. Everything ties together, though, in the Blu-ray Gift Exhcange. Read Pat McDonald's work at HollywoodChicago.com Blu-rays covered: Warner Bros: "Sinners" (2025) "Final Destination: Bloodlines" (2025) "Lord of the Rings" (1978) Universal: "Knight Rider: The Complete Series" - 4K Sony: "Stop, Look and Laugh!" (1960) Warner Archive: "Melinda" (1974) "Two Weeks With Love" (1950) "Knights Of the Round Table" (1953) Criterion: "You Can Count On Me", "Carnal Knowledge" and "Barry Lyndon"
Devin & James are back, and they're gonna need a bigger podcast. That's why they've brought back special guest CASEY O'CONNOR to discuss the blockbusters and award nominees of 1975! We start with a little film called JAWS, which some of you may have heard of before. We then move on to the Best Picture winner, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, followed by the Kubrick comedy (that's right, I'm calling it a comedy), BARRY LYNDON. We then take a turn toward Altman's NASHVILLE, before ending up in New York City for 3 DAYS OF THE CONDOR and DOG DAY AFTERNOON. Along the way, we also give shout-outs to SHAMPOO, THE GREAT WALDO PEPPER, and THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING. There must have been something in the water in 1975 (a shark, perhaps?) because these are some of the greatest, most influential, and important films ever made, celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year!
Ellen Coyne and Pat Leahy join Hugh Linehan to look back on the week in politics:· With Independent TD Catherine Connolly and former MEP Mairead McGuinness having declared their candidacy, there will now be at least two names in the race for the Áras. But with no sign yet of a clear candidate for Fianna Fáil or Sinn Féin, are any of the potential names currently being discussed likely to gain party support? · Fianna Fáil's Niall Collins would be 'very uncomfortable' with a one-size-fits-all approach to a blanket VAT cut for the hospitality sector, given that luxury and five-star hotels would benefit from a measure they don't necessarily need. Some Fine Gael Ministers are unhappy with Mr Collins for criticising a policy that would help support entry-level jobs in rural Ireland. · And as the humanitarian crisis deepens in Gaza, urgency around the Occupied Territories Bill increases. The inclusion of services is still the big question given the huge potential knock-on effects for some businesses here. Plus, the panel picks their favourite Irish Times pieces of the week:· A new exhibition exploring the legacy of the Magdalene Laundries, fifty years since the release of Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, and Joe Canning's take on Tipperary's triumph in the All-Ireland hurling final against Cork. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On episode 297 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello and AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer, Josh Parham, and Jay Ledbetter to go back 50 years and take a look at the 48th Academy Awards, covering the films of 1975. On this retrospective, the AW team take a look back at what might've been the greatest Best Picture lineup of all time, featuring the films One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Barry Lyndon, Nashville, Dog Day Afternoon, and Jaws. This group of five films collectively encapsulate the type of films audiences clamored for fifty years ago and are all considered all-time classic in their own right, some being the best film within their respected director's filmography. But the interesting exercise with this line-up is looking at the lackluster films surrounding these masterful films. But this is the fun part of the process of looking back and talking about a year like this, if it is a landmark year like others in the 1970s or if it just top heavy. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 1975, briefly discuss talk about One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as a Best Picture winner, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to three films to make up the final set of five nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h40m. We will be back in next week for a review of the latest film from Marvel, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Till then, let's get into it. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

Nearly every Stanley Kubrick film has been featured on Have You Ever Seen now that we're spending about an hour reviewing Barry Lyndon. In this 663rd episode, we analyze the gold-digging, underwhelming dueler played by Ryan O'Neal, an Irish soldier (turned gambler) who also turns out to be a terrible stepfather. Even though he's good as the opportunistic Redmond Barry, he's outshone by Patrick Magee, Steven Berkoff and particularly Leon Vitali as his lordly stepson. Barry Lyndon is one of the best-looking movies of 'em all, so it appropriately won Oscars for the look and the design. The pace is deliberate and the story is a very blow burn in this episodic epic. So enjoy Cinco de Mayo by hearing us throw it back and forth about these ordinary people in extraordinary times as we play some games of chance with Barry Lyndon. PUBLIC VERSION. Criterion Collection producer Curtis Tsui (RUMBLE FISH, GODZILLA VS BIOLANTE, many others) joins Joe to discuss his 20 year long career creating amazing special edition releases of some of the most notable films of all time. From how he first found his love for cinema while in school to become a doctor… to how he got the gig as a producer at Criterion decades ago… to what it takes to create some of the great features included with each release… to the importance of establishing a relationship with filmmakers… to the art of a great commentary track… to shooting in the Kubrick house for BARRY LYNDON… to the most challenging title he has worked on and the film he's most proud to have contributed to… to the viral sensation known as “The Criterion Closet” and how it became a go-to stop for working artists… if you were ever interested in the process of making a title in the Criterion Collection (or just want to hear Curtis and Joe geek out for 2 hours), this conversation is a must listen!
It had taken five years for Stanley Kubrick to go from 1975's Barry Lyndon to 1980's The Shining. The gap to Full Metal Jacket would be longer, but it'd mark the first in a three picture deal that Kubrick signed with Warner Bros. A deal that would never be completed. Full Metal Jacket was, though, but the making of it was exhausting and exhaustive. And a disused gasworks was just part of the problem. Much-loved novelist Judy Blume was always reluctant to sell the film rights to her books. It took several decades - and a very special letter - before she'd do so. But the challenge of Are You There God, It's Me Margaret was just beginning. Stories of both are told in this episode... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
