Caligula: The Ultimate Cut - Producer & Re-constructionist Thomas Negovan

Now, 43 years after the 1980 release of historical epic CALIGULA, producer and reconstructionist Thomas Negovan has realized the creators' original vision with CALIGULA: THE ULTIMATE CUT, a version comprised of entirely never-before-seen footage shot in 1976. Shadowed by the murder of his entire family, the young, wary Caligula (Malcolm McDowell) eliminates his devious adoptive grandfather (Peter O'Toole) and seizes control of the declining Roman Empire, descending into a spiral of depravity, destruction, and madness. A treatise on the corrupting influence of power, this extensive reconstruction of the notorious 1980 spectacle, CALIGULA: THE ULTIMATE CUT restores the complete performances of Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren, as the promiscuous 'Caesonia', from an unprecedented amount of never before seen footage. Sumptuous set designs by two-time Oscar winner Danilo Donati. CALIGULA: THE ULTIMATE CUT aligns closely to Vidal's original script, especially with the addition of a prologue that illustrates one of Vidal's missing scenes, created by noted graphic artist Dave McKean (Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum, Neil Gaiman's Sandman). Nearly 100 hours of original footage was discovered by the film's re-constructionist, film historian Thomas Negovan, in the Penthouse archive, which showcases astounding performances from the film's cast, fully realizing McDowell's complex, charismatic 'Caligula' and resurrecting Mirren's layered character arc, which now cements the film's final hour. Producer & Re-constructionist Thomas Negovan joins us to talk about his own daunting journey of reviewing the hundreds of hours of footage, his decision to use an enormous amount of never before seen footage in this final cut, seeking out many the surviving cast and crew, provide an artistic context to McDowell's performance and to give the film a chance to be seen as flawed, but wildly ambitious cinematic journey into the heart of a darkness at the rotting core of the Roman Empire. Artist as Leader
Launch a sumptuous arts complex in this arts climate? Bill Rauch's vision is already bearing fruit.

Of all the tasks to undertake in the current arts climate, leading a brand-new multimillion-dollar performing-arts center through its opening and first season must be one of the most daunting. Yet, Bill Rauch, the inaugural artistic director of the Perelman Arts Center (usually referred to as PAC NYC) in Lower Manhattan managed to launch with a bang through an astonishing array of music, dance, theater and opera performances. He also capped the first season with a personal triumph, co-directing with Zhailon Levingston an inventive reimagining of the musical “Cats” set in New York's drag ballroom scene. The production, titled “Cats: The Jellicle Ball,” garnered enthusiastic reviews and was immediately extended.Although Bill has decades of experience as an artistic director and producer, his previous posts were markedly different from the current. Right out of college, he founded Cornerstone Theater Company, a firmly community-centered company that was initially nomadic, creating theater with and for small and often rural towns before it put down roots in Los Angeles in 1992. Cornerstone continued to make homegrown community-partnered theater in Los Angeles as well as in satellite projects around the country. Then in 2007 Bill became the artistic director of Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which is a bit of a unicorn in the American theater ecosystem as one of the very few theaters in the U.S. with a full-time acting company. It is also one of a handful of destination theaters in North America, with patrons traveling from all over the country to rural Southern Oregon to enjoy a theatrical vacation. At OSF, while still centering Shakespeare's works, Bill diversified the theater's offerings and bolstered its new-play development program.“Art Restart” was eager to speak with Bill to learn how he has adapted his heavily community-centered vision to the demands of leading New York's newest cultural landmark, which opened during a particularly perilous time for so many of the city's performing-arts institutions. Here he describes why and how PAC can thrive in today's New York as a singularly welcoming hub for the countless communities throughout New York City and its environs.https://pacnyc.org/https://pacnyc.org/bio/bill-rauch/

It's Oscar season!   I was so thrilled to see ‘Past Lives', the astounding slow-moving-yet-somehow-fast-paced debut film from Celine Song nominated for Best Picture. Best Picture! On her very first film. Oh, and no biggie, Best Screenplay, too. This following a slew of other noms like 5 Golden Globes, 3 Critics Choice Awards, 3 BAFTAs, and a recent Director's Guild of America win for Outstanding Directorial Achievement for a First-Time Feature Film.   Leslie and I loved ‘Past Lives' so much we went back to theaters to see it again. The film had such unique energy as it told the story of Nora and Hae Sung, two childhood friends in South Korea, who lose touch when Nora's family emigrates, and then seem to be forever-chasing the goodbye they never had.   The film opens with a late-night bar scene of Hae Sung visiting Nora and her husband in New York before scrolling back to tell the unpredictable, jumping-around-the-decades story of how they got there. Every shot was such a sumptuous visual feast — from silhouetted lineups for the Staten Island Ferry to broken-transmission Skype calls to a final waiting-for-an-Uber scene that deserves its own prize. And the writing! Crisp. Punctuating. So much said ... with so little. ‘Past Lives' is a truly magical film that I can't recommend enough. 96% on Rotten Tomatoes also means there's a great chance your movie-going pal will love it, too.   I was thrilled ‘Past Lives' director, writer, and filmmaker wunderkind Celine Song joined me on 3 Books from her New York apartment to talk about the Korean concept of in-yun, why we're drawn to stories, what unique role millennials play as the last pre-Internet-immersive generation, how a cannibalistic orgy makes for great literature, a surprising cure for loneliness, why sensory deprivation increases chemistry, the other job of a director, Celine's 3 most formative books, and much, much more... Let's flip the page into Chapter 133 now...

About 15 years ago he began the mammoth task of compiling a series of books telling the story of virtually every record the label released in its pioneering history, tracking down and talking to all those involved - musicians, producers, designers, photographers, label staff – and collecting old music press ads and ephemera from the time. Happy new year to all our listeners. We hope Santa brought you lots of gifts and you are ready to embrace 2023 with vigour and hot chocolate, which is what one of our crew is doing this week. Yes, Stuart is skiing in the Maldives, or that's what he told us. Is there snow in the Maldives? Jan and Óran are not so sure. So stepping in again, at great expense we might add, is Clodagh.   We start off this week with an ask: The Blind Guys would love to know what holidays you have been on that you really enjoyed, whether it be because the accessibility was great or the public transport was fantastic, or the people were very helpful, etc. Maybe you have been on a cruise with your guide dog? Drop us a line and tell us how you got on. We'd love to hear about your travel tips also, like don't forget your long cane, as Jan did! The email is blindguyschat@gmail.com. We're looking forward to hearing from you.   Our guest this week is Mark Pollock. Mark is a blind paraplegic adventurer, and he was a lot of fun to interview. We hope you enjoy hearing about his exploits.   In email corner, Clodagh turned the tables and wrote to one of our regulars. She heard a rumour that Scottish people can't say a particular phrase and she wanted to find out if it's true. Our Scottish correspondent tells us all, which triggers a rather confusing side chat about Smurfs. And then Clare McLoughlin of “Seen Unseen” got in touch to tell us about their new 2023 schedule, which is available at https://tinyurl.com/SeenUnseenschedule. All “Seen Unseen” events are free! You can get more info and book your place by emailing Clare at claremclaughlinemail@gmail.com   So put on your wind breaker, take the curlers out of your hair and have a listen to the best podcast this side of a drunken crab on steroids.   Blind Guys Chat. And to the end we come! I won't lie, but it's been a huge year and the last part has somewhat dragged on.   Don't get me wrong, I'm super stoked with how the year has finished up. Not to mention a huge thanks to the people that have come out to visit us in Muriwai at Good from Scratch, purchased a EngelElzen cast pan or purchased the amazing Engel fire. I want to thank you all.  As we run into another year with what will be my 8th (I think) on Newstalk Sunday, I want to thank Francesca, Kerrie and all the listeners of NewstalkZB.  This week, we have for all the Christmas ham fans, my favourite go-to ham glaze! I just want to take all the stress out of Christmas day, as it has been a big year!  Cider, star anise & pineapple roasted ham  Cook Time: 60 minutes  Prep Time: 10 minutes  Serves: 8-10  3kg free-range cured & smoked Christmas ham   2 x 330ml dry cider or apple juice   6 star anise   10 cloves   2 cups fresh pineapple, peeled   2 Tbsp Dijion mustard   500 gm brown sugar  Preheat a oven on fan-bake to 160c.   Slice the skin of the ham and score the fat in a diamond pattern.   Combine the cider, star anise and sugar in a pot and bring to the boil, reduce until syrupy (bubbles will increase in size and slow). Dice the pineapple into thin dice and then stir into the cider mixture. Allow to cool.  Place the ham into a roasting tray. Smear the Dijion over the ham, followed by 3 tbsp of the cider glaze. Use the cloves to prick through the pineapple to keep it in place. Place the ham in the middle of the oven oven for 1 hour depending on size, checking and baste until caramelised. Serve hot or at room temperature if transporting. Keep the remaining cider syrup to re-glaze once on the table.  Sumptuous!  Mike's website – goodfromscratch.co.nz  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The kingdom is crippling in debt and it's all because of this no good inflation. As a good host to our good king, I -of course- offered him a sumptuous meal upon his arrival and today we have quite the menu of creepy cavettatappi. Sofa King is hungry, he's just beggin for today's pasta and we're going to give it to him in a VERSUS amount of doses. First, we read some NOSLEEP, then we read some UNSETTLING STORIES. Back-to-School is a good time to practice flexibility, adjusting to learning, new knowledge and schedules. Also the late-summer heat in the northern hemisphere is that much more conducive to a good stretch out. But tests to our personal resilience and ability to respond with agility to change come all year long. Maybe you already love stretching and appreciate the experience and benefits. In that case, we've got the choir and the preacher, let's sing! But it could be that your emotions around stretching and flexibility work could be more mixed, or even downright negative. The words you use to describe stretching practice could be mild, such as uncomfortable, boring… or strong, such as awful, excruciating, torture. In that case, it could be time for a shift of mindset and actual stretching setup, toward comfort, relaxation, and the positive influence, both physical and mental, of greater elasticity in our lives. It means more possibilities for movement, physical and metaphorical! Momentary discomfort can, through mindfulness, curiosity, and resourcefulness, transform into something savory, delicious, even indulgent. With the right timing, intentions, music, positions and approaches, props, and breathwork you may just fall in love with the spaciousness of flexibility. Come feast your senses with me

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 6, 2022 is: sumptuous • SUMP-shuh-wus • adjective Sumptuous is used to describe things that are extremely costly, rich, luxurious, or magnificent. // The hotel's most sumptuous suite overlooks the lush gardens and includes a palatial marble bathroom with a spa and a commodious, intricately tiled walk-in shower. See the entry > Examples: "Simple but sumptuous, this sheet-pan cod primavera with blender hollandaise is a spring sensation...." — headline, The Alaska Dispatch News, 20 Apr. 2022 Did you know? The word sumptuous typically describes things that can only be had at some significant expense, a fact that keeps the modern English word tied to its Latin source: sumptus, meaning "expense." Another English adjective, sumptuary, has the same Latin source, but today is found mostly in the context of sumptuary laws, largely historical regulations limiting extravagant expenditures and habits, especially on moral or religious grounds.
