In this episode, Paige and Christine discuss the first few chapters in Matthew, and the words "genesis" and "genealogy" throughout our hero's origin story! The importance of literary devices and word choices through scripture is often lost on us as an audience so far removed from the writers and their time/culture/experience, but (in God's sovereignty) we marvel at how He still calls our names and draws us to Himself, revealing Himself faithfully through His word- intended to be brought to every tongue and nation, every circumstance, and every age. As moms, we have the greatest opportunity to bring His word to our little ones, who might believe and live a life governed by His grace! Our roles as moms and parents are unique. The seasons change quickly and often. Let's keep praying for each other! Bonus: We sing some memory verses at the end for you. You're welcome. Meaning & Belonging

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 31, 2021 37:31

Christine & Paige have a conversation about meaning and belonging. Today, it seems like individualism and autonomy are prized and dependency is seen as less, or weak, or OK as long as you're still in complete control - like, living with your lover without the suffocating agreement of marriage. It also seems like depression and anxiety are leveraged against people, to make them run hard after "working on themselves" instead of the one who made them.  In truth, proper care from knowledgeable doctors, and seeking wise counselors is good and compatible with abiding in God's love and enjoying the peace and freedom we are given when we're in right relationship with God! Paige and Christine have been noticing that in the ancient world, the question, "who do you belong to?" is one way someone might ask a poor or endangered person, "who is taking care of you?" Ruth and 1 Samuel demonstrate how two poor and endangered individuals, a Moabite woman and an Amalekite's slave, were in need of someone to care for them, they were at the proverbial 'end of their rope' and God used their humble stations to make good on His very own promises.  We hope this encourages you to run hard after belonging to a good God; to not despise what He is doing around you, and in you, whether it is difficult or easy; a burden or a joy.  He promises: "...we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28) Rest in that real, good promise.

    What is Eternal

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 16, 2021 20:53

Christine emerged from a rough week and Paige had uplifting insights, which is a reminder to us all that we need our brothers and sisters in Christ, near and far. We tried to keep the conversation together, and the most prominent theme we talked about was remembering an eternal perspective. We consider what has eternal value. We walked into a conversation about our own eternal value, and the the misunderstanding around the popular slogan (among both believers and nonbelievers): "You are worthy!" We talked about what value there is in remembering and reminding each other about the good things we have done. Our aim and response should not be: "See? look how OK we all are. We don't need a savior." Because our nature is corrupt and there will continue to be brokenness in and around all of us despite our best efforts. Our response should be more like, "What great mercy that God has allowed me and you to do the good work he had made for us to do since the beginning of time! He transforms my sinful heart from stone to flesh; He prunes away the dead leaves and branches off of me to help his plant (me) bear good fruit. How great is our God!" And we give a few recommendations (below). Next week we'll talk more about WHOSE we are. "Who does he/she belong to?" was a question that popped up in both Ruth and 1 Samuel, and we believe we belong to God. That is a deep belief, and we want to explore it. WE RECOMMEND: - This Chronicles Chart - Apta Sophia Podcast - The book, "Victory over the Darkness: Realizing the Power of Your Identity in Christ." VERSES: "God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?" -Numbers 23:19 (God said it, through Balaam *mind blown emoji* it wasn't Moses.) "And he who is the Glory of Israel will not lie, nor will he change his mind, for he is not human that he should change his mind!” -1Samuel 15:29 "The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever." -Isaiah 40:8 "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." -1Corinthians 13:13 2Corinthians 5:10, 15, "We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ." -2Corinthians 10:5 In response to the crowds when they said they wanted to basically be Jesus, and have power the way Jesus had power: "Jesus told them, 'This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.'” -John 6:29 Jesus is talking about how HE is the bread of life, and anyone who is HIS enjoys the eternal spiritual satisfaction, and one day, the physical will be restored to God wholly, and will never again know hunger or thirst. psalm 139, psalm 103, psalm 8

Feminism & Deep Terrible Want (Ruth, 1Samuel)

Some storylines we recently read in the Bible reminded us that people use the Bible to promote feminism, to varying degrees. We need to use these passages to promote the gospel, first, but we discuss how we don't know everything and we have questions too. The story of Ruth's mother-in-law and of Samuel's mom reflect a time and place that isn't easily transposed into this day and age. But Let's propose that the reality for both women is that they lack, and they know the same deep and terrible WANT which drove the Israelite nation to cry out for their own King; the same want which drove Achan to take treasure from the loot dedicated to be for the Lord; the same want which drove the first humans to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

I'm also impressed lately with how prayer is pictured in Revelation, and elsewhere in scripture, as a substance which fills bowls, and an aroma before the Lord.
