There's a prayer in the Anglican Church of North America's “Book of Common Prayer” that I found very helpful during this year's Lenten Season. It is one of the prayers to be prayed during the Sunday's leading up to Easter, this one specifically for the fifth Sunday in lent. What I love about this prayer is its recognition of the issues we and our kids face as a result of living in a rapidly changing world that is in so many ways opposed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Let me suggest that you pray this prayer for your kids and family. Here is that prayer: "Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of this world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen."
Lenten Retreat Conference No. 5: When I Am Lifted Up: The Saving Innocence of Christ Note: This audio is the fifth Friday Retreat Conference within the Lenten Season. When I Am Lifted Up: The Saving Innocence of Christ This fifth conference within the Lenten Devotional Season . . . . . . explains how the season of Lent developed over time in the Church. Originally, Lent focused on preparing new converts for baptism, but as Christianity became widespread, it shifted toward renewing the faith of all believers. By the Middle Ages, Lent took on two parts: the first emphasizing prayer, fasting, and almsgiving for personal conversion, and the second . . . beginning around the fifth week (Passiontide) . . . focusing on the Cross and Christ's suffering. Covering of Crosses and Images A key tradition during this time is the covering of crosses and images. This practice symbolizes a “fasting of the eyes,” helping believers recognize that they often take sacred things for granted. By temporarily hiding these images, the Church invites deeper reflection so that, when the Cross is revealed on Good Friday, it is encountered with renewed understanding and reverence. The conference emphasizes that the Cross is central to understanding Jesus. While the world resists suffering and self-sacrifice, Christ reveals that true life comes through self-denial, self-giving, and sacrifice. This is why Jesus teaches: to follow Him, one must first deny oneself, then take up the cross. Lent prepares believers for this call. Through spiritual discipline, they are strengthened to confront their own weaknesses and worldly tendencies, which often prioritize self-interest over God's will. As Passiontide begins, the Church asks a deeper question: not just whether one follows Jesus, but how deeply one desires to follow Him, even to the Cross. The culmination comes on Good Friday, when the Cross is finally unveiled. This moment represents a profound revelation of Christ's love and sacrifice, drawing believers to venerate and personally encounter it. From the Cross flows forgiveness . . . Jesus' first words being “Father, forgive them” . . . highlighting mercy as the heart of the mystery. The conference encourages participation in the sacrament of reconciliation, especially during Lent, as a concrete response to Christ's mercy. Overall, Lent is presented as a journey of conversion, leading believers to a deeper understanding of the Cross, which is the source and summit of Christian life. Lent is often associated with giving something up for a short period of time—chocolate, social media, or another personal habit. While these practices can be helpful, the deeper purpose of Lent goes far beyond temporary sacrifice. It is an invitation to examine our hearts and allow God to reshape us. In John 15, Jesus describes Himself as the true vine and God the Father as the gardener. Every branch connected to the vine is carefully tended. Branches that do not bear fruit are removed, while fruitful branches are pruned so they can grow even stronger and produce more. Pruning is not comfortable. In gardening, it involves cutting away what is unnecessary so that the plant can flourish. Spiritually, pruning can look similar. God gently reveals attitudes, habits, or priorities that may be preventing us from growing closer to Him. Sometimes those things are obvious sins that need to be removed. Other times they may be distractions or patterns that slowly pull our focus away from Christ. Even good activities can become misplaced priorities if they keep us from remaining connected to the vine. Lent invites us to slow down and reflect. It encourages us to sit quietly before God and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what needs to change. This season is not about earning God’s approval—it’s about allowing Him to shape our hearts so we can bear the fruit of His Spirit. As we remain connected to Christ, the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control begins to grow in our lives. These qualities are not produced through willpower alone but through our ongoing relationship with Jesus. When we allow God to prune our hearts, the result is not loss—it is deeper growth, greater freedom, and a life that reflects His character more clearly. Main Takeaways Lent invites believers to examine their hearts and spiritual habits. God, the gardener, prunes our lives so we can grow and bear more fruit. Spiritual pruning may involve removing sinful habits or unhealthy priorities. Remaining connected to Christ allows the fruit of the Spirit to grow in us. The goal of Lent is deeper transformation, not temporary sacrifice. Today’s Bible Verse “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” - John 15:1-4 (NIV) Your Daily Prayer Prayer excerpt for listeners: “Lord, help me remain connected to You and allow Your Spirit to shape my heart.” Listen to the full prayer here. The Reluctant Prophet: The Frightening Greatness of Mercy This conference focuses on the meaning of repentance and God's mercy during Lent, . . . . . . using the Book of Jonah as a mirror for the human heart. When God calls Jonah to preach repentance to the wicked city of Nineveh, Jonah flees because he suspects that God might forgive them. His flight symbolizes how people often resist God's will, cling to resentment, and struggle with the idea that mercy might extend even to their enemies. Through humorous and ironic events . . . Jonah fleeing by ship, being thrown into the sea, swallowed by a great fish, and finally preaching reluctantly . . . scripture reveals both the stubbornness of the human heart and the persistence of God's grace. Jonah's preaching leads the people of Nineveh to sincere repentance, and God spares the city, which angers Jonah because he prefers justice without mercy. Why? The conference further explains. The book of Jonah concludes with God challenging Jonah's narrowness of heart. If Jonah can care about a small plant that gives him comfort, should not God care for the thousands of people in Nineveh who do not yet understand right from wrong? Jesus himself says, this generation will only receive the sign of Jonah. What Does That Mean? The conference then turns to Jesus Christ, who contrasts with Jonah. While Jonah runs from his mission and resents mercy, Christ willingly comes into the world and gives His life for sinners. Jesus fulfills the “sign of Jonah”: just as Jonah spent three days in the fish, Christ spends three days in the tomb, but unlike Jonah, He enters death to rescue humanity. Hear more within the conference! The central Lenten message is that God's mercy is wider and more generous than human expectations. We are called not only to seek forgiveness through repentance and confession, but also to accept the radical scope of God's mercy . . . even toward those they find hardest to forgive. From the Roadside to the Roadway: True Freedom of Life and Spirit This Lenten retreat centers on Jesus as the Light who seeks us out . . . . . . and invites us into deeper conversion. Using the story of the healing of the blind beggar, the conference emphasizes that the spiritual life is not primarily about our search for God, but about God's relentless search for us. From the beginning of salvation history, God takes the initiative, calling humanity into relationship and asking for a response of faith. Lent, therefore, is a time of intentional discipline . . . prayer, fasting, and sacrifice . . . not as punishment, but to rediscover what truly matters and to remove whatever “blinds” us spiritually. Sin is described as a kind of blindness that prevents us from seeing reality, God's presence, and the path to fullness of life. Seeing the Face of Christ: Perseverance, Faith, and the Light of Conversion Like the blind man who cries out despite opposition, believers must persevere even when enthusiasm fades or when others discourage their commitment. Following Christ always involves resistance and ultimately leads to the Cross; yet the Cross is not the end but the path to salvation. Jesus' question, “What do you want me to do for you?”, becomes the central personal challenge of Lent. Each person must answer honestly, ask for spiritual sight, and choose to follow Christ with faith. When one truly “sees” the face of Christ, one cannot help but follow Him. The candle-lighting and procession to the crucifix symbolize this journey: moving from darkness to light, from blindness to faith, and from intention to committed discipleship. For listeners to this conference, place a cross in your hand, and meditate on your response to Jesus' question, “What do you want me to do for you?”. As you gaze upon His face commit your Lenten Season to Following Him. Listen to this second devotional Lenten Retreat Conference and let it transform your heart. First Lenten Retreat: The Works of Lent: Growth Toward a Generous Spirit During each Friday of the Lenten Season, there will be a Lenten Retreat Conference. This is the first week within this series. Each conference will appear singularly on the Website, SoundCloud, Facebook and iPod platforms. All conferences will also appear within this post. This Retreat explains that Lent has a deliberate spiritual structure rooted in early Church practice. While many people think of Lent mainly as “giving something up,” the Church intends something deeper: a transformation of the heart through the three traditional works of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Historically, Ash Wednesday was added later as a gateway into Lent, orienting believers toward repentance and renewal. In the ancient Church . . . especially in Rome . . . seasonal fasts (later called Ember Days) connected spiritual life to the rhythms of agriculture: planting, growth, harvest, and sharing food with those in need. These fasts were communal, not private, and included processions, vigils, ordinations, and acts of charity. The faithful prayed not only for themselves but for crops, the poor, catechumens preparing for baptism, and new ministers of the Church. The Retreat stresses that Lenten practices are not about quantity (“doing more”) but quality and intention: • Prayer asks for whom and how we pray, deepening attentiveness to God. • Fasting reveals what we truly hunger for, disciplines disordered desires, and fosters solidarity with the poor. • Almsgiving is the goal toward which prayer and fasting lead . . . self-gift in imitation of Christ. True fasting expands the heart; true prayer changes behavior; true charity gives not just possessions but oneself. Lent therefore trains Christians to move from self-centeredness to sacrificial love, mirroring Christ's own self-emptying. Ultimately, charity endures above all virtues and becomes the visible sign of authentic faith. Listen to this first devotional Lenten Retreat Conference and let it transform your heart. Join us virtually, or physically, each week for additional Lenten Retreat conferences. On this weeks podcast we are joined by Bishop Brendan Leahy to reflect on the beginning of the Lenten Season. Bishop Brendan shares with us his reflection from his Lenten Pastoral Letter 2026 on how we could reframe our understanding of the ancient call to fast during the period of Lent including how to translate it into action for the modern world. Fasting is always put before us in the Christian life. and reminds that “Jesus' call to conversion and penance… does not aim first at outward works… but at the conversion of the heart, interior conversion”. Without interior conversion our external works such as fasting“ remain sterile and false.” In Lent, fasting is never meant as something we do on its own. It is not to be separated from prayer and almsgiving as forms of Christian love. Each of us must decide in our heart and perhaps in consultation with others, what specific form of fasting we want to take on for Lent. And then, we need to persevere in our undertaking. He also shares on a Lenten resource that is being made available as part of the preparations for the National Synodal Pathway. Baptised and Sent is the Preparatory Document for the Pre-Synodal Assembly of the Irish Synodal Pathway, which took place on 18 October 2025. A key moment in the Irish Synodal Pathway it was a shared journey of listening, prayer, and discernment as the People of God. The document was prepared to support reflection and dialogue across parishes, schools, faith communities, and dioceses. This Lent, parishes, schools and groups across Ireland are invited to journey together through a set of reflective resources inspired by Baptised and Sent. Grounded in the conviction that baptism is the foundation of our identity, dignity and mission, these resources help us return to the heart of Christian life, that through Baptism we are reborn in Christ and sent out by the Spirit in service of the Gospel. Through these Lenten reflections, each person – lay, religious and ordained – are encouraged to rediscover who we are as God's people, to listen to the Holy Spirit and to take concrete steps, individually and collectively towards living our baptismal calling more deeply. You can also register to participate online HERE.We have our regular run through the liturgical odds and ends in part one including the saints of the coming week.In part three we have our weekly reflection on the Sunday gospel and this Sunday's gospel is Matthew's account of the temptations (or testing) of Jesus in the desert which is something for us to reflect on as we enter into our Lenten journey and how would we deal with the temptation to power, pride and testing of God in our lives. So, what is the point of Lent and Easter? Why did Jesus appear to us, walk among us, die on the cross, resurrect, ascend, and cover you in the Holy Spirit? Did God really do all that just because He loves you? Could God have done all that because He wants to immerse Himself in you and He wants you to want to immerse yourself in Him? If you're ready for Lent to be more than giving up coffee or donuts and life to be more than a series of empty distractions, come kick off this year's Lenten Season with Eleanor, Brenda, and Randy, and set your sights on seven weeks designed for your soul to come fully to appreciate its worth.
Greetings to you on this first Sunday of the Lenten Season.I will pray that this year's Lenten Journey will be a blessing to you.Fr. Kennedy
We live in a shallow world with quick answers, constant motion, and noise both inside and out. Lent calls us deeper--beneath distraction, beneath habit, beneath self. In the Old Testament, God often led His people into deep work confronting what was broken, healing what was hidden, and shaping His people for wholeness. This Lent, we enter that same journey and allow God to go beneath our surface to connect us more to our Divine Design. We begin the Lent Season with a special Ash Wednesday Sermon. Pastor Karla leads us into the Lenten Season by asking us to examine in ourselves the feelings that are similar to those found in the writier of Psalm 42. Why are you downcast oh my soul? At the depths is the feeling of being overwhelmed. Yet, whatever the depths of God, is the appeal to the corresponding depths in us. The familiar parable of the Prodigal Son is always heard during Lent, and it teaches many truths of the Faith. Perhaps the greatest takeaway is the undying mercy of the Father. This mercy is only available to us if we but turn back to Him in a state of repentance.

Today, I'm joined by Alex Jones, Co-Founder and CEO of the Hallow app. Alex shares how his deep desire to encounter Christ in daily prayer—guided by the wisdom of the mystics—led him to create the app, despite skepticism from others. He takes us through the highs and lows of building Hallow, including the secret to raising over $100 million. Alex also shares powerful testimonies, from a grieving mother finding comfort through the app to an addicted mom reuniting with her child and husband. He even dives into the bold decision to use precious Super Bowl airtime to invite people to prayer. Alex's radical surrender to God's will and his passion for spreading the Gospel have borne incredible fruit—his story is one we can all be inspired by.Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/LilaRose865A big thanks to our partner, EWTN, the world's leading Catholic network!
