Dominating The NPTE with Kyle Rice
What is more important, getting questions right on the NPTE or preventing simple mistakes that cause you to get questions wrong? 90% of the students that I have evaluated, who have failed the NPTE at least once, make simple test taking errors that cost them anywhere from 5-30 questions. Knowing this makes it difficult to say that test-taking strategy development is not crucial during NPTE preparation. There are different techniques that you can use to restore focus, improve mental ability In this podcast episode, we will explore a couple of techniques that have my students messaging me saying, "Why didn't I think of this before!" This week let's discuss "timeouts"... Elevate your NPTE prep and join a dynamic facebook NPTE prep community. Join us today,@ http://bit.ly/SNPGroup [Listen here]
Failing repeatedly at any challenge is never a fun experience, but it sure as hell isn't when you feel that your future is on the line. I found my passion in helping physical therapists pass their NPTE after going through the worst years of my life. Seriously... I hated myself. I had no self-esteem, lost all confidence, and even considered suicide during all of it. All because I wasn't good enough to pass a stupid exam. For several years my life was defined by my ability to pass a standardized exam. I "failed" the MCAT 5 times, SATs twice and the ACTs twice. If it weren't for my incredible parent's instilling the value of being "non-quitter" in me, I would have given up long ago, or worse. My journey was a tough one, and unfortunately, I share this same journey with so many physical therapists out there who can't pass their NPTE. I want to share my story, my journey of repeated failures, and the road I took to achieve the greatest success of my life. [Listen here]
This past week in my Smart NPTE Prep Facebook Group I spoke to my members about achieving wild success on their NPTE. I asked everybody, "do you know what it takes to get wild success". I got crickets! But, do you know? It starts with putting in extraordinary effort each and every day when you are preparing for the NPTE. Avoiding the temptations of repeating the same study techniques over and over even though YOU KNOW they are not working or effective. I have found that when I put in extraordinary efforts, and I actively seek out any and every opportunity to help me succeed, I get AMAZING RESULTS! Extraordinary actions helped me to achieve a 230 point scaled improvement in my overall NPTE score. It has helped several of my students achieve 100+ point improvements in their scaled scores in
Are the people around each day helping you to increase your NPTE score or to decrease it? Michael Jordan, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffet are all big names that have changed the lives of their respective industries forever. But these people wouldn't have been so successful if the people that they put around them each day weren't extraordinary. I want to speak to you today about the importance of creating a "winning team" of people who are smarter than you. I want to discuss the importance of building a team of people who will increase your NPTE score just because of their advice, insight, and influence. I am ready to be on your team if you are prepared for it... /thepthustlellc/npte-free-screen Listen to this episode as I explain the "winning team." Have you ever heard the statement, "less is more"? I read a statement the other day claiming less is more with NPTE preparation. The advice suggested that when preparing for the boards, you should only use two reference textbooks. We use the saying, "less is more," all of the time, however, that line of thinking is not always appropriate. One of the reasons students fail the NPTE is because their knowledge is superficial. When a student only relies on one source of information, it forces them to settle for just the knowledge contained in those references. Unfortunately, I have years of proof supporting that for many students a review textbook is not enough. So what is the alternative? I will explain this further in the episode. This is a tough topic for me to discuss. A student told me that she feels her school is worried more about their 100% pass rate than her genuinely passing. That got to me because, how can we make it to the next level if we are all out for ourselves? If all we do is TAKE, TAKE, TAKE. As a coach, you have to understand that your success is in part dependent upon your trainee's mental state. If the people you train, are worried about succeeding just to make "you" happy, you both will fail. AND FAIL HARD. The key to success in coaching/teaching, making your students believe in their capabilities while helping them become aware of their purpose for competing. Do you feel that your next NPTE is the last NPTE for you? Do you ever start to think...well I always have another attempt if I fail. If you believe this, then you need to listen up because that type of thinking will cause you to keep failing. I have so many students that I speak to on a day-to-day basis that think like this and have never been told the importance of "burning the ships." The idea that relying on a contingency plan leads to excuses, complacency, and mediocrity. [Listen Here]
Do you fear success? Sometimes when you have failed the NPTE numerous times you avoid getting hyped up about being successful. You don't want to jynx it... or if you aren't superstitious then you just don't want to be "cocky". I have spoken with several students over the past few months who were worried about being "cocky" and then failing the exam. I will say that there is a major distinction between being cocky and being confident. When you are confident you don't fear success, you attack it. I want to explain to you the difference between being cocky and being confident on your next NPTE. [Listen here]
Have you ever gone through a clinical rotation where your CI evaluates patients in like 15 minutes, and it takes you nearly an hour and a half to do the same thing? Plus you still get it wrong.... Haha I have been there before...plenty of times. But I learned that "having more experience" isn't the best answer for why I seemingly suck at evaluating patients. It's not that... It is the fact that my CI was able to recognize a set of patterns which guided him/her to the right answer quickly. The NPTE is no different. You can take the NPTE 5 times and still not be quick at answering questions. It isn't about experience but pattern recognition. My question to you is, are you studying in a way that is setting you up to recognition patterns? No? Well, listen to today's podcast as I explain this critical skill for NPTE success. [ Listen Here ]
There are many talks about how the new NPTE is much different than before. Not just the number of questions but the actual wording of the questions. Some folks even go far enough to say this a completely different test than it has been before. Well, this can seem very accurate if you are not training like you will be tested. Do you know what I mean? I mean if you are not studying in a way that is setting you up to be able to apply and analyze concepts, you will probably not do well on the NPTE. If you are not learning concepts backward and forward, you will probably not fair well on the NPTE. It is time that we focus on our preparation differently. We have to start focusing on the "why" questions and avoid superficial face value learning at all costs? Do you agree? Scoring a 580-599, just missing the 600 cutoff score is a slap in the face. At least that is how my student describes it. His story about his, 590, 593, and 694 repeated NPTE failures resonated with me so much. Mostly because he got to the point where he was just going to quit and take up a second career. In this podcast, I share his story and give you his perspective and recommendations for what he would tell you... Are you missing a couple of questions on the NPTE which is keeping you from practicing as a PT? Check out my website: thepthustle.com Like us on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thepthustle/
The absolute worst part of the testing experience is the waiting period for your results. I mean why do they really have to make you wait entire 6-7 days!! Complete torture to be honest. That week of waiting is filled with anxiety, stress, poor eating habits, and the lack of anything filling your mind but the possibility of failing. Not to mention your family and friends who keep asking about whether you passed or not! Okay, how do I know that? Yup, I have been there with you, struggling with that constant feeling of uncertainty. But, luckily for me, I was able to curb my stress after a couple days by implementing 4 key strategies. [Listen here as I explain]
Over the past four years, I have found that it is easy to get caught up in the trap of recognizing topics and not truly understanding them... There have been hundreds of times where I've just skimmed a page and "thought I knew" the topics, only to get questions about those topics wrong. I never truly understood why this happens until I discovered, "the difference between recognition and recollection". Listen here as I explain this "ah ha" moment in detail... The NPTE can be a stressful event and is often looked at as a major hurdle to overcome in the PT journey. Focusing on the NPTE in this perspective sets you up for pessimism and self-doubt on test day. When you are taking your NPTE, you have to focus on being positive and confident in what you know that you know... I am going to give you the top pieces of advice that I would give to myself right before the exam. Check out my website: thepthustle.com Like us on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thepthustle/
We all make mistakes during test preparation, but hopefully you don't make a bad mistake on test day. Yeah, well I made a rookie mistake just this year that caused me to experience anxiety like I have never felt before. I thought for sure that I had really messed up this time... Seriously, I imagined, "EXTRA, EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!" "THE NPTE EXPERT," FAILS A STANDARDIZED TEST! I want to take you inside of my head and explain this whole situation. Have you ever been pressured to do something that you didn’t feel comfortable with? I know that I have… I have been pressured to smoke, drink underage, and a bunch of other stuff with negative consequences. I found out that there is another type of peer/familial pressure that is not based around doing something considered harmful, unethical, or illegal. This kind of pressure catches you off guard. Peer/familial pressure regarding the NPTE makes you uncomfortable, and depending on your choices, can have consequences that can make you feel worse than you've ever felt. < tune in to today’s podcast as I open up about this tough subject >
In this episode, I want to speak to you about a topic that has affected me and affected a lot of the students that I have seen over past four years. I love providing tips and strategies to help students preparing for the NPTE but this particular tip I discuss today has some major benefits. Let's go over the 2018 NPTE changes. So now you are in a position, just like me and several others, who have taken a standardized exam and now the test creators are changing the test format. These changes wouldn’t be so scary if there weren't social media commentary hyping up the idea. I want to shed some light on this so-called "different exam." Most of all, I want to explain why these changes could cause you not to get the 600. Listen to more about it here! The first piece of advice that I always tell my students is, "Make sure that you are asking the why questions and not just taking information off of face value." We do that too often. Now that we are studying for one of the most critical exams that we will take in our PT career, it is vital for you to be a cautious consumer. So what do I mean by that? Check out my website: thepthustle.com Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thepthustle/
One of my most favorite topics. Confidence has such a big impact on tests scores. You already know that I come from a background where I wasn’t very confident. A background where I felt like I was the worst test taker out there. The person that you know just didn’t have it. Just wasn’t good enough. Just didn’t study hard enough. Whatever it was, I was not good at test taking. And the one thing that I will say is that I felt like I was always out on an island by myself. I felt that everyone else had whatever it took to do well on the SAT’, the ACT’s, the MCAT, NPTE, whatever it was. They had it. I didn’t. Do you ever start to think negative? Do you start to feel that you're less confident with your daily activities or studying or understanding of topics? Did you ever consider that your environment is affecting your NPTE score? Depending on your particular environment, my suggestion is to get the heck out of it NOW! To move on, to get yourself into an environment that is progressive, that is productive, that is a confidence-building team of people that are just going to help you to move forward and do the best that you can do on the NPTE. Let's go over the four types of students who fail the NPTE. What I want you to do this episode is to focus on these different descriptions and determine which category you fall into. The reason why these types are so significant to me, the reason why I find so much value in these types is because I have seen all of these students before. Numerous times. And now, because I’ve seen so many of them, I’ve been able to really determine the probability that this particular student is going to change their studying approach and do well on their next NPTE. Only one person knows if you are letting failure dictate how you’re going to live the rest of your life. How you’re going to make your money. How you’re going to get to this next level or going to the next career or whatever it is. You are the only one who knows deep down inside if failure is guiding your life. You do not have to prepare for your next standardized test with the scarcity mindset. You don’t have to do that. You don’t have to focus on diminishing resources and things that you do to have control over, but YOU CAN FOCUS ON ABUNDANCE! Factors you do have control over like effort. Make sure that you are all-in every single time you sit down to study. You’re putting a 110% effort in that material to make sure that the results that you get, your outcome, is one that you can be proud of.
