In this episode, I have a fun conversation with Dr. Lara Salyer. She is a family physician based in southern Wisconsin who left her employment in a traditional medical practice, and created her ideal consulting practice serving patients in a new way. She obtained training and certification in funtional medicine and opened a cash-based practice, incorporating holistic methods. As she did so, she brought her creativity into the process. She explains the planning that went into building a truly unique consulting practice that incorporates everything she enjoys about medicine and none of the frustrating aspects that led her to burnout. We get into the details of her transition (engaging an attorrney, setting up her business, branding, and use of social media), and how online teaching and group visits contribute to her success. Finally, we learn about her side gigs: speaking engagements to young physicians, and an online program she designed to help physicians regain some of their lost creativity called Right Brain Rescue. As always, you can listen on any podcast app and on the show notes at vitalpe.net/episode120, where you can also find a transcript and links to resources mentioned in interview.

There are many talks about how the new NPTE is much different than before. Not just the number of questions but the actual wording of the questions. Some folks even go far enough to say this a completely different test than it has been before. Well, this can seem very accurate if you are not training like you will be tested. Do you know what I mean? I mean if you are not studying in a way that is setting you up to be able to apply and analyze concepts, you will probably not do well on the NPTE. If you are not learning concepts backward and forward, you will probably not fair well on the NPTE. It is time that we focus on our preparation differently. We have to start focusing on the "why" questions and avoid superficial face value learning at all costs? Do you agree? Scoring a 580-599, just missing the 600 cutoff score is a slap in the face. At least that is how my student describes it. His story about his, 590, 593, and 694 repeated NPTE failures resonated with me so much. Mostly because he got to the point where he was just going to quit and take up a second career. In this podcast, I share his story and give you his perspective and recommendations for what he would tell you... Are you missing a couple of questions on the NPTE which is keeping you from practicing as a PT? Check out my website: thepthustle.com Like us on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thepthustle/
Over the past four years, I have found that it is easy to get caught up in the trap of recognizing topics and not truly understanding them... There have been hundreds of times where I've just skimmed a page and "thought I knew" the topics, only to get questions about those topics wrong. I never truly understood why this happens until I discovered, "the difference between recognition and recollection". Listen here as I explain this "ah ha" moment in detail... The NPTE can be a stressful event and is often looked at as a major hurdle to overcome in the PT journey. Focusing on the NPTE in this perspective sets you up for pessimism and self-doubt on test day. When you are taking your NPTE, you have to focus on being positive and confident in what you know that you know... I am going to give you the top pieces of advice that I would give to myself right before the exam. Check out my website: thepthustle.com Like us on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thepthustle/
We all make mistakes during test preparation, but hopefully you don't make a bad mistake on test day. Yeah, well I made a rookie mistake just this year that caused me to experience anxiety like I have never felt before. I thought for sure that I had really messed up this time... Seriously, I imagined, "EXTRA, EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!" "THE NPTE EXPERT," FAILS A STANDARDIZED TEST! I want to take you inside of my head and explain this whole situation. Have you ever been pressured to do something that you didn’t feel comfortable with? I know that I have… I have been pressured to smoke, drink underage, and a bunch of other stuff with negative consequences. I found out that there is another type of peer/familial pressure that is not based around doing something considered harmful, unethical, or illegal. This kind of pressure catches you off guard. Peer/familial pressure regarding the NPTE makes you uncomfortable, and depending on your choices, can have consequences that can make you feel worse than you've ever felt. < tune in to today’s podcast as I open up about this tough subject >
In this episode, I want to speak to you about a topic that has affected me and affected a lot of the students that I have seen over past four years. I love providing tips and strategies to help students preparing for the NPTE but this particular tip I discuss today has some major benefits. Let's go over the 2018 NPTE changes. So now you are in a position, just like me and several others, who have taken a standardized exam and now the test creators are changing the test format. These changes wouldn’t be so scary if there weren't social media commentary hyping up the idea. I want to shed some light on this so-called "different exam." Most of all, I want to explain why these changes could cause you not to get the 600. Listen to more about it here! The first piece of advice that I always tell my students is, "Make sure that you are asking the why questions and not just taking information off of face value." We do that too often. Now that we are studying for one of the most critical exams that we will take in our PT career, it is vital for you to be a cautious consumer. So what do I mean by that? One of my most favorite topics. Confidence has such a big impact on tests scores. You already know that I come from a background where I wasn’t very confident. A background where I felt like I was the worst test taker out there. The person that you know just didn’t have it. Just wasn’t good enough. Just didn’t study hard enough. Whatever it was, I was not good at test taking. And the one thing that I will say is that I felt like I was always out on an island by myself. I felt that everyone else had whatever it took to do well on the SAT’, the ACT’s, the MCAT, NPTE, whatever it was. They had it. I didn’t. Do you ever start to think negative? Do you start to feel that you're less confident with your daily activities or studying or understanding of topics? Did you ever consider that your environment is affecting your NPTE score? Depending on your particular environment, my suggestion is to get the heck out of it NOW! To move on, to get yourself into an environment that is progressive, that is productive, that is a confidence-building team of people that are just going to help you to move forward and do the best that you can do on the NPTE. Only one person knows if you are letting failure dictate how you’re going to live the rest of your life. How you’re going to make your money. How you’re going to get to this next level or going to the next career or whatever it is. You are the only one who knows deep down inside if failure is guiding your life. You do not have to prepare for your next standardized test with the scarcity mindset. You don’t have to do that. You don’t have to focus on diminishing resources and things that you do to have control over, but YOU CAN FOCUS ON ABUNDANCE! Factors you do have control over like effort. Make sure that you are all-in every single time you sit down to study. You’re putting a 110% effort in that material to make sure that the results that you get, your outcome, is one that you can be proud of.
