Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. We are kicking off a new series today! Over the last few months, we've been talking about the Kingdom of God, the family of God, the characteristics of God, and now we're going to talk further about the ten values of the Vineyard! We're so blessed to have these implicitly as our values, but now we're going to go through each of these that will be the foundation for where we're going as a church.

Acts 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Today, we're going to be looking at the idea of a family and how we are called as Christians to approach one another and live together. We'll be looking at some current trends in our culture and society, and we'll be discussing what it means to be a healthy family (not just in our homes but also as a church!). When people come together as a family, there are lots of dynamics and things to work through and think through, and as God continues to knit us together, we're called to not just be a church but a family.

Genesis 18:13-14 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?' Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” We are continuing in our summer preaching by focusing on the promise given to Abraham and Sarah. It has been said that a hope deferred makes a heart sick, and sometimes when we're waiting for the fulfillment of the promise, we lose heart and grow weary. But when the Lord speaks, we have to respond. When God gives a promise, we are called to receive it, believe it, and participate in it. And that's what we'll be talking about today!

Mark 16:15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation..." Throughout Jesus' itinerant ministry, something becomes abundantly clear: Jesus was on the move, and everywhere he went, he brought the Kingdom of God. The church, the Ekklesia, was never meant to be a destination or location. It was always about a gathering of people on the move. Over the years, there's been a shift in the church's identity and purpose; the church became a place you go to rather than a launching pad for the Kingdom of God to break through and in. The church was always meant to be on the move, always meant to bring and carry the Kingdom of God into every realm. As Jesus said, "On earth as it is in heaven..." and let it be so, Lord!

This weekend, we are so excited for Jon Petersen to speak at the Vineyard! Jon is a prolific author and writer, and he loves to encourage churches and ministries into being communities of friendship and relationship. He has once said that the Kingdom of God advances at the speed of relationships, and it's so important for the Body of Christ to not just tolerate one another but do life together.

John 20:22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit." Jesus knew that his disciples needed help, and that's why he breathed on them to receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit isn't some spooky or mysterious being; He's a person, our Helper and Friend, and without his help, life, especially the Christian life, is almost impossible. Many of us go throughout our days relying on muscle memory or our routine, but when we reach some obstacle or hurdle, then we ask for the Holy Spirit to help. But what if we spent every moment, every second, as an opportunity to pray, "Come Holy Spirit"? What if we didn't have to wait until life got hard to ask for the Helper? What if we relied on his power and presence all the time? This Sunday, we're going to spend some time learning about the person of the Holy Spirit and how he is our help!

Colossians 1:15-18 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

This week, we're looking at a pretty famous passage of Scripture where Jesus encounters a wee-little man and changes everything for him. Just by befriending him, Zacchaeus' whole life becomes redeemed. We're going to look at five ways that Jesus is a friend to sinners and how we can all be better friends like Jesus!

And this week, we'll go through each of the tribes to refresh all the different enemies that we might face while stepping into God's promises! This has been a wonderful series, and there's so much more that we could say about God's promises. But hopefully it's been abundantly clear: if God calls you into something, He will provide the very means to accomplish the thing He is calling you to. There may be obstacles and roadblocks and even attacks, but greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world. And if God is for us, who can be against us?

These were giants and pretty intimidating people. Physically, they were scary, but what they represented to the Hebrews: a BIG problem. Many people know the story of David and Goliath, of a child overtaking a giant, and this story is kind of a prequel. Pretty early on, God's people found themselves in hard situations facing large obstacles, and they had to lean not on their own understanding and trust in God! In the flesh, we see a huge obstacle, but in the Spirit and with God's help, all giants can be conquered!

This has been a great series looking at all the different tribes that the Hebrew people encountered as they moved towards the Promised Land. Whenever we are led by the Lord to something new, we typically experience some form of resistance, some form of hardship, and it would be easy for us to just shrug our shoulders and say, "Well, maybe I wasn't supposed to do that..." But where the Lord guides, He provides! And we must remember that getting to our place of promise is going to cost something. It may be uncomfortable and hard at times, but if the Lord is in it, He is in it. And we must remind ourselves that God is the one that goes before us as we go to where He is taking us. This week, we're looking at the Perizzites, which means something like apathy and lack of drive to do something that the Lord is asking of us.

This word means something like a liar, slanderer, or gossiper. We've all been in situations where someone has said something mean or rude to us. We've told ourselves that "sticks and stones may break our bones but words will never hurt us," but this isn't always the case. In the New Testament, James reminds us that there is life and death in the tongue, and we can either uplift one another or tear someone down. And as followers of Christ, our call is always to speak the truth in love and to elevate one another. This week, we'll look at the Kenite tribe and how we're supposed to deal with gossipers and slanderers!

Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them... We are looking at the Kenizzites this weekend at the Vineyard! This tribe means something like covetousness or jealousy, especially when it comes to success. This may have happened to you before, but it usually happens whenever we step into something new. We feel called and excited to step into something, and then we notice that there are others that seem more equipped or more qualified to do the thing that we're called to do. This is a common tactic of the enemy: to cause you to doubt both the God that called you into something and the talents and resources that He has given you! We easily become jealous of other peoples' success thinking that there's no possible way that we can do what they're doing... This can cause us to look at others in the room with a covetous glare, thinking we need to become like them, all the while losing sight of the very thing that got us in the room in the first place. What can happen is that we begin to work hard to transform ourselves into others that we see around us. Changing our methods, speech patterns, look and lifestyle to try to “fit in”. But each of us, created in the image of God, have a unique calling, and the sooner we realize that, the easier it'll be for us to celebrate the way that God has made us rather than looking at each person as competition.

Joshua 3:10 This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites... We are continuing in our series, Taking Destiny, by looking at the Canaanites. This word literally means zeal and fervor, and it has to deal with getting ahead. Many times in life, when the Lord reveals His plan to us, we get so excited and so eager to step into it. But sometimes we jump into a situation before we're actually ready and prepared for it. We should jump into the pool when we see water. Tempering our expectations and trying to stay lockstep with the Holy Spirit who sets the pace is sometimes challenging. Many of us want a microwave Kingdom of God, but in reality, it's much more like a slow-cooker. Learning how to walk hand-in-hand with the Lord as He guides and directs us is so crucial whenever we're stepping into our destiny. We can't let our zeal and fervor dictate the pace; we must let the Lord do it!

We are continuing in our series, Taking Destiny, by looking at the Jebusites. This word means something like anxiety, dread, or worry. Coming out of the last few years, most if not all of us struggle with anxiety. Whether it's acute or something prolonged, we worry about so many things, and we can sometimes let our worries overwhelm us. But in Philippians, Paul reminds them to put their trusts and hopes in the Lord. His solution to worry? He tells them to worship and make their requests known to God. The Lord cares about us! He loves His children, and the more that we realize that we are His beloved, the less worried we should be about the future, about our pasts, or anything at all. Resting in the arms of God, He is our security and our peace. Let us confront our anxieties with the love of God!

We are continuing in our series, Taking Destiny, by looking at the Hittites. This word means something like fear of danger or fear of the unknown and failure, and we'll be talking about our need to put our fears to rest! All of us, at one point or another, have to deal with fear. The phrase, "do not be afraid," is used 366 times in the Bible; one for each day of the year plus a bonus for when we get more fearful. And this fear especially creeps in whenever we're about to step into something special and important, especially when God is calling us to something unknown. But we're called to keep taking steps, and in order to do that, we must deal with our fears!

Joshua 1:7 Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go... We are continuing in our series, Taking Destiny, by looking at the Kadmonites. This word has connotations of history, tradition, and things of the past. Something that we all must deal with when we are walking in our destiny and purpose is the things of the past, and for many of us who have grown up in the faith, that means that we also have to deal with the spirit of religiosity. The religious spirit isn't a bad thing at first! When we first come to faith, we usually try to readjust, reorient, and take on new practices that will draw us nearer to the Lord, but sometimes these practices become ends in themselves when in reality they are meant to lead us closer to Jesus. Unfortunately, this spirit is extremely subtle, and it can affect most of us without knowing. We must be quick to deal with this spirit, as it can take root quickly before we really ever know what hits us. And since the chances are that we all struggle with this, we're going to begin the work of expelling this spirit from the land!

This week, we are looking at the Amorites! As we begin this series, we're going to look first at the battle of the Amorites. As we mentioned last week, Amorite means "sayer," like people that are always talking about you and saying something negative. These are adversarial spirits that are just constantly tearing people down. As followers of Jesus, we're all called to be leaders and change agents in the world, so whenever you begin to do things of significance, people will always talk. But, as many of us know, obedience is challenging. We sometimes have our questions, concerns, and even fears when God calls us to follow Him, but obedience is all about surrender and submission. There's so much freedom in letting go, and like John the Baptist said, "I must decrease so that He may increase." The more that we surrender and submit to the way of the Lord, the more boldness and confidence we will have knowing that our good God is leading us to streams of living water.

We all have a sphere of influence, a place that the Lord has put us in, to reach people for the Kingdom of God! God desires that all people be saved, and He has entrusted us with this opportunity to reach others. As Christians, we are all called to be witnesses, partnering with the Spirit, in going out into the world. People are hungry for the real thing.

Acts 2:42 The Message They committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers. It's Mother's Day! We're continuing our Easter Challenge series by continuing our conversation we had last week about the need for church life. Pastor Jon will be speaking on the family of God and why it's important for us to see each other as siblings in Christ. The saying goes, "You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family." And that's absolutely true. In the family of God, everyone has a part to play, and we have to continue to be devoted to one another and to the mission of God.

Acts 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. We are continuing our "Easter Challenge" series, and Pastor Jon is going to be speaking on the importance of church community, loving one another and serving God. We need the church just like the church needs us, and the more that we understand our role in the church, the healthier the church will be (and by association, we also become healthier!). God designed us to be in community, to love and serve one another, and the church is the best place for us to plug in. We learn who we are and are able to use our God-given talents and resources to enable the church to be all that the church is called to be!

We are finishing up our series in the Gospel of John this week! Hasn't this been a great discussion? We've looked at the feeding of the 5,000, the man born blind, the centurion's son, walking on water, water into wine, and the healing at Bethesda. All of these stories show the kind of Savior that Jesus is, and they reveal God's redemptive plan for humanity.
