My earliest influential musical memories stem back to childhood where my parents would listen to WBLS every morning while getting ready for school. Being exposed to various forms of rhythm & blues, classic soul and early hip hop growing up, had a profound influence on my musical palette. Another huge impact on my musical perception was my father's record collection that spanned so many artist genres from James Brown, Hector Lavoe to Christopher Cross. I eventually used his music and the records I “borrowed'' from my college radio station to spin my first basement fraternity party. They asked what name to put on the flyer and I said.. Dj Derick Spaulding because I had no cool Dj name; and it stuckThe strong, driving force behind deciding to buy my own set of 1200's was a desire to record mixes with the specific records I wanted to hear and in the order I wanted them played. Learning to spin and master mixes was not easy. My friends would throw objects at me if my mixes were off-beat...LOL... Looking back, this unique lesson taught me how to effectively hold a blend for extended periods of time, which would eventually form the base of my dj style; blends over scratches.All the musical influences growing up allowed me to be a chameleon of music genres. I learned to spin and eventually fuse odd elements of music together to develop my own Dj style. Blending hip-hop with fused rock loops, mixing reggae and salsa together, while seamlessly navigating numerous levels of house music allowed me to grab gigs all around the city favoring whatever type of music the crowds wanted me to play. I made my name as a hip-hop dj, but could step in and flip house, reggae, rock, merengue, salsa, bachata like it was my specialty. I was known as the Dj that would flip records fast, playing mostly hooks to create that crazy crowd energy all night. It worked! My club experience and collaboration list is long because I had the benefit of growing up in the golden age of hip-hip and clubs. Playing venues like Latin Quarters, Palladium, Roxies were a regular part of my Dj lineup. I was blessed to work with so many key promotional teams around NYC and beyond that gave me access to many key venues to promote my name. I have been on the same Dj lineup with OG's like Kool Herc and Peter Parker to modern day legends like Camillo, AM and Enuff. I have earned my Dj stripes and now listen with enthusiasm and encouragement to the next generation of turntablist.
After 35 years of being in and out the game, SoulMedic's second birth into DJing was further encouraged by his business partner & nephew DJ WillRod. Hook & Bass Records / Hook & Bass Productions was started with the idea that SoulMedic would be the face of the Company & Record Label. Quick on his feet and with a savvy technical know-how, this creative remixer shows no fear behind the decks. From Old School Music of every genre to the most recent floor bangers, he can find a fit among them and through all genre of music. Although he's worked with a great diversity of DJs and producers in the past, he thrives on building and developing new relationships wherever he goes. He takes great pleasure in show casing the talents and skills of those he's built professional and personal relationships with through his radio shows, most recently Vibrations & Rhythms on Hook & Bass Internet Radio via the MixLR application. His past residencies have been on Cyberjamz Internet Radio & Ember Radio Live and has had many guest spots on other radio show most recently on Welcome 2R House Radio Show in collaboration with Radio Free Brooklyn (NYC). Excited by new ventures, SoulMedic always is keeping up with the constant changes of the industry. Even with that, his passions are not limited to one thing. Besides pursuing things that make him happy, he enjoys spending time with his extensive family, all of who share his first love, Music! Growing up in NYC's Hells Kitchen, his first official foray into DJing was in 1984 as a High School Senior. After using a neighbor's equipment to learn on, he purchased his first set of turntables, Technics 1200s. & and a Bozak Mixer. He went from using a simple slide mixer to a rotary mixer and is basically a self-taught DJ. He hit the mobile DJ scene hard, moving others the way music always moved his soul and eventually landed his first gig in the clubs in one of the NY Hotspots. Seeing what the NY nightlife had to offer he became passioned with it's scene. Throughout his years he has played not only in NY but has also in Los Angeles, Boston, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and internationally in Mexico, Ecuador, Spain to name a few. Has shared the Decks with many local and foreign DJ's. The DJs that influenced him were Larry Levan, John ‘Jellybean' Benitez, Timmy Regisford, Danny Tenaglia, Little Louie Vega, David Morales and so many more. “As soon as I got the chance I hit the club scene watching these DJs do their thing” he fondly recalls. Like many born and bred New Yorkers, skyrocketing prices pushed him to settle elsewhere. Currently residing in New Jersey, he maintains a close relationship to his roots in Hell's Kitchen through family and music. With a deep commitment to Community, SoulMedic along with his partner DJ WillRod and the rest of the Hook & Bass Productions crew continue to volunteer their time and services for events that involve children, diabetes or cancer. He champions these causes from personal life experiences that involve those closest to him. His focus is on supporting local charities that give aid to the immediate community or person. This personal undertaking allows for him to see where the assistance goes and in turn keeps him involved in the community he loves. As a self-professed extrovert his passions keep him active in the nightlife, feeding off of and sharing energies with others in the right industry settings. His passionate focused demeanor carries over from the dance floor to behind the decks to working on projects that impact those he comes in contact with. The many influences that have contributed to his strong sense of community and commitment to excellence include his father, the first two DJs he encountered in his life, Church and learning how to play the trumpet.
