Merlin Bobb, a Brooklyn native and renowned DJ, is widely credited as a pioneer of the house music scene. His success in the industry has recently earned him recognition from Boiler Room, who invited him to perform his first live DJ set in 2022. Merlin landed his first mix show on WBLS and quickly became a favorite among dance music fans. Over the years, he experimented with different techniques and musical styles, pushing the boundaries of what was possible with DJ-ing. This signaled the start of a long and illustrious career in the entertainment industry. Merlin's influence extended far beyond the DJ booth. As an executive at major music recording labels like Atlantic and Elektra Records, he was instrumental in introducing the burgeoning house music scene to a wider audience. He also signed and hired prominent dance music DJs and producers like Frankie Knuckles, Timmy Regisford, Roger Sanchez, Kerri Chandler, David Morales, Louie Vega, Tony Humphries, and Pete Tong to sign artist, produce remixes and help spread the house music sound. Merlin co-founded Club Shelter, a legendary nightclub that quickly became the epicenter of NYC's house and dance music scene. For the Eighth episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories I'm joined by guest Merlin Bobb representing stories from New York.Merlin Bobb, a native of Brooklyn, New York, is a renowned DJ and widely acknowledged as a pioneer of the house music genre. The first thing you might realise during a MUSCLECARS set is the sheer musicality of the duo's selections. Vocals glimmer at the centre, unfolding into enchanting, soulful coos, while drums strike captivating rhythms and gilded synths reach towards the sky. It's a jazzy New York house sound mythologised by pioneers like Joe Claussell, Carlos Sanchez and Timmy Regisford (whose songs all make it to this RA Podcast). For years, New York natives Brandon Weems and Craig Handfield have run their Coloring Lessons party as a way to introduce a younger generation to this vital piece of dance music history. We discuss a range of topics including her formative experiences in the New York clubs of the 70's & 80s, the origins and evolution of Movin records, Tony Humphries, Zanzibar, and the House sound of New Jersey.“As one of the prominent, iconic women in the Dance Music business, Abigail Adams' critical role in the development of New Jersey's Essex County-centered dance music industry continues to impress upon the new crop of DJ's, remixers, producers, record labels and recording artists.  Abigail began her career in the Dance music arena via her DJ boyfriend, KB.  In the early 1980's, they owned a custom roller skating store Movin' Skates in East Orange, NJ.By the mid 1980's, through her friendships with now legendary DJ's such as Timmy Regisford, Larry Levan (RIP) and Tony Humphries, her knowledge of recording artists and their discographies grew rapidly.  Movin' Records became THE most influential record shop in the Dance music scene in NJ.  It was Abigail's relationship with DJ Tony Humphries of Club Zanzibar who was also one of the leading DJ's on NYC's 98.7 KISS-FM mastermix show and the club's former manager, Shelton Hayes, had unknowingly created a unique marketing strategy that catapulted many undiscovered artists into dance world stardom.  The birth of Movin' Records, the label was a natural progression for Abigail due in part to the exploding dance music culture.  The Movin' Records catalogue is full of some of genre's forthright artists, producers & remixers such as Vicky Martin, Kenny Bobien, Cassio Ware, Boyd Jarvis, Intense, Kerri Chandler, Marshall Jefferson, DJ Pierre, Ce Ce Rogers, Blaze, Larry Patterson and Tony Humphries.Abbie's career has crossed decades and her musical ear has impacted many as her influence continues today. Chaque chanson a une histoire unique et son propre son.  Bobby Glover's "Your Spell" est une piste funk irrésistible de 1984, produite par Roger Troutman, célèbre pour son utilisation de la talkbox.  Les Hudsons' "Show Me You Care" de 1982 est un autre classique du funk, avec des arrangements élaborés et des voix soulful.  Pree's "One Look" de 2012 apporte une touche plus contemporaine à cette sélection musicale, tout en gardant les influences de la musique soul et funk.  "Girls World" de Chartz, sortie en 1983 sur Digital Records, est un exemple de la fusion du funk et de la new wave, avec une ligne de basse funky et des synthés énergiques.  Klique a sorti un almbum en 1982, "I Can't Shake This Feeling" sur MCA Records, ce morceau a fait sensation dans les clubs et les radios.  Kevin Toney's "Red Tape" de 1982, produit sur Fantasy Records, est une piste jazz-funk avec un piano virtuose et une section rythmique puissante.  "The Barkays" de 1982, produit par Allen A. Chaque morceau est un témoignage de l'influence et de l'importance de la musique soul, disco et funk dans la culture musicale des années 80's.

 After 35 years of being in and out the game, SoulMedic's second birth into DJing was further encouraged by his business partner & nephew DJ WillRod. Hook & Bass Records / Hook & Bass Productions was started with the idea that SoulMedic would be the face of the Company & Record Label. Quick on his feet and with a savvy technical know-how, this creative remixer shows no fear behind the decks. From Old School Music of every genre to the most recent floor bangers, he can find a fit among them and through all genre of music. Although he's worked with a great diversity of DJs and producers in the past, he thrives on building and developing new relationships wherever he goes. He takes great pleasure in show casing the talents and skills of those he's built professional and personal relationships with through his radio shows, most recently Vibrations & Rhythms on Hook & Bass Internet Radio via the MixLR application.           His past residencies have been on Cyberjamz Internet Radio & Ember Radio Live and has had many guest spots on other radio show most recently on Welcome 2R House Radio Show in collaboration with Radio Free Brooklyn (NYC).  Excited by new ventures, SoulMedic always is keeping up with the constant changes of the industry. Even with that, his passions are not limited to one thing. Besides pursuing things that make him happy, he enjoys spending time with his extensive family, all of who share his first love, Music! Growing up in NYC's Hells Kitchen, his first official foray into DJing was in 1984 as a High School Senior. After using a neighbor's equipment to learn on, he purchased his first set of turntables, Technics 1200s. & and a Bozak Mixer. He went from using a simple slide mixer to a rotary mixer and is basically  a self-taught DJ. He hit the mobile DJ scene hard, moving others the way music always moved his soul and eventually landed his first gig in the clubs in one of the NY Hotspots. Seeing what the NY nightlife had to offer he became passioned with it's scene. Throughout his years he has played not only in NY but has also in Los Angeles, Boston, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and internationally in Mexico, Ecuador, Spain to name a few. Has shared the Decks with many local and foreign DJ's.       The DJs that influenced him  were Larry Levan, John ‘Jellybean' Benitez, Timmy Regisford, Danny Tenaglia, Little Louie Vega, David Morales and so many more. “As soon as I got the chance I hit the club scene watching these DJs do their thing” he fondly recalls. Like many born and bred New Yorkers, skyrocketing prices pushed him to settle elsewhere. Currently residing in New Jersey, he maintains a close relationship to his roots in Hell's Kitchen through family and music. With a deep commitment to Community, SoulMedic along with his partner DJ WillRod and the rest of the Hook & Bass Productions crew  continue to volunteer their time and services for events that involve children, diabetes or cancer. He champions these causes from personal life experiences that involve those closest to him. His focus is on supporting local charities that give aid to the immediate community or person. This personal undertaking allows for him to see where the assistance goes and in turn keeps him involved in the community he loves.      As a self-professed extrovert his passions keep him active in the nightlife, feeding off of and sharing energies with others in the right industry settings. His passionate focused demeanor carries over from the dance floor to behind the decks to working on projects that impact those he comes in contact with. The many influences that have contributed to his strong sense of community and commitment to excellence include his father, the first two DJs he encountered in his life, Church and learning how to play the trumpet.
