Disco didn't just happen—it emerged from the vibrant gay club scene of 1970s New York City. In this episode, hosts Ryan Purcell and Kristie Soares explore how iconic venues like the Continental Baths, the Mineshaft sex club, and the legendary Paradise Garage became part of a musical revolution that transformed popular culture. Joining them is Lucas Hilderbrand, Professor and Chair of Film and Media Studies at UC Irvine and author of the groundbreaking book The Bars Are Ours: Histories and Cultures of Gay Bars in America, 1960 and After (Duke University Press, 2023). From intimate bathhouses to pulsing dance floors, discover how gay culture didn't just influence disco—it created it. The conversation also touches on Hilderbrand's companion archival project, The Bars Are Archived: Primary Sources for Gay Bars in America, which is available through Alexander Street's Queer Pasts collection. In the fifth episode of Season Two of Soundscapes NYC, hosts Ryan Purcell and Kristie Soares sit down with the legendary DJ Nicky Siano. The history of dance music in 1970s New York is synonymous with the life and work of Siano. He was among the early attendees of David Mancuso's Loft dances, where he learned to organize parties and DJ for an audience. Siano transposed Mancuso's informal gatherings to a proper discotheque called The Gallery (1972-1977,) which he co-owned and DJed. At The Gallery, Siano pioneered techniques such as beatmatching, EQing, and using three turntables to fashion a proto-disco sound through his preferred selection of funky soul and R&B records, inspiring a host of celebrated figures like Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles. The Gallery was a seminal 1970s nightclub that laid a blueprint for iconic New York clubs like the Paradise Garage and Studio 54. Siano is perhaps most well-known for DJing and being fired from Studio 54 for his unconventional methods. For Siano, music was more than pleasure. It was a source of empowerment, a refuge, and spiritual salve that has enabled him to persevere and thrive as a DJ in New York during the Seventies and beyond. In this conversation, Siano illustrates the power of music that animated his involvement as an activist in the Stonewall riots. As a DJ, Siano has maintained his belief in the capacity of music to bring people together, despite social differences, and as a healing force during the AIDs era. In this conversation, Siano traces his evolving romance with music, echoing his enduring salvo: Love is the Message. The title of this episode draws from a memoir that Nicky Siano is currently authoring, I, DJ: Stonewall to Studio 54. Learn more about your ad choices. The Loft was a dance party series organized by DJ David Mancuso in his Manhattan warehouse apartment at 647 Broadway from Valentine's Day 1970 to June 1974. The parties offered an alternative to New York's commercial nightclub scene. The invitation-only events featured an egalitarian space for music and dance with a top-of-the-line sound system, eclectic musical selections, and a racially inclusive and gay-friendly mix of guests. Attendees included the city's leading disc jockeys such as Larry Levan, Nicky Siano, and Frankie Knuckles, who launched their careers in next generation clubs like the Paradise Garage, The Gallery, Chicago's Warehouse, and The Saint— all influenced by the Loft. In the premiere episode of Season Two of Soundscapes NYC, host Ryan Purcell introduces co-host Kristie Soares, in conversation with music and dance historian Tim Lawrence, to contextualize David Mancuso's Loft. Lawrence is a Professor of Cultural Studies at the University of East London's School of Arts and Digital Industries. He is the author of Love Saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music Culture, 1970-79 (Duke University Press, 2003), Hold On to Your Dreams: Arthur Russell and the Downtown Music Scene, 1973-92 (Duke University Press, 2009) and Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor, 1980-83 (Duke University Press, 2016). Outside of academia, Lawrence hosts his own dance party series called All Our Friends, as well as a podcast about music history called Love Is The Message. Check out the mix and come down and enjoy the vibe as we pay homage to 30+ years of house music with an afternoon of SOULFUL HOUSE classics, 90's House & a solid dose of DISCO ROOTS. Sunday, July 6 @ 2pm at GREENWOOD HOTEL (North Sydney) Info at www.soulofsydney.org/spiritofhouse - About STEPHEN ALLKINS : ‘New York had Larry Levan, Chicago had Ron Hardy, Sydney has, Stephen Allkins..' It is safe to say that Stephen Allkins aka [love] tattoo could rightly claim the trademark of “Mr.Disco”, his extensive record collection & his infamous sets over the years. Stephen Allkins—aka [Love] Tattoo—is an undisputed icon of Australian dance music. A DJ, producer, and pioneer, he has been shaping the sound of disco and house music in Australia since the late 1970s, laying the foundations for the vibrant club culture that followed. From the earliest disco nights in Sydney's gay clubs to underground warehouse parties and mainroom raves, Stephen's sound has consistently pushed boundaries and inspired generations. Affectionately known as “Mr. Disco,” Stephen began DJing in 1978, spinning vinyl in a scene still forming its identity. He was among the first in Sydney to champion disco and later house music, earning a reputation as the “DJ's DJ” for his impeccable selections, deep crates, and intuitive ability to work a dancefloor. His sets were spiritual experiences, blending deep disco grooves, vocal house, and electronic soul with an effortless mastery that helped define the sound of a city. As [Love] Tattoo, Stephen stepped into the studio and brought his musical vision to life with a series of genre-defining releases that bridged the golden era of disco with the pulse of modern house. His breakout single “History of Disco” (2001)—a lush, soulful tribute co-produced with Paul Mac—was quickly signed by Pete Tong to Essential Records and released on the legendary UK label ffrr. The track resonated internationally and marked Allkins as not just a DJ, but a gifted producer with a reverence for dance music's roots. Today, Stephen Allkins stands as one of the most important figures in Australia's dance music history. His influence is felt in every corner of the scene—from crate-digging selectors and disco revivalists to mainstage house DJs and producers. With over four decades of contributions behind him, his legacy continues to inspire the next wave of artists and dancers alike. We are honoured to welcome him back to play the SPIRIT OF HOUSE tribute parties again at one of the seminal homes of the sound through the 90s. About the SPIRIT OF HOUSE: Spirit of House is a tribute party paying homage to an era of house that sits close to our hearts, a platform to get down to SOULFUL HOUSE sounds of 90s & 2000's & 90's House classics & of course the disco roots that form the foundation of that sound.

In this episode Tim and Jeremy continue the story of Frankie Knuckles first year at the controls of the seminal Chicago nightclub, the Warehouse. We hear an investigation of Frankie's early musical aesthetic, how it would lend itself to the development of the House sound some years later, and whether stability or dynamism are better for a pumping dance floor. Elsewhere in the episode we hear about how Robert Williams came to know Frankie and Larry Levan, the experiences the two young club kids had at the Continental Baths, the understated role of social workers in the story of dance history, and what the PMC have to do with Afrika Bambaataa. Plus - stolen donuts, LSD in the fish tank, and Jeremy's dreams of lamé… Produced by Matt Huxley. Due to licensing issues, we can only play short clips of the music discussed. This is the first of two episodes on another seminal club in the history of dance culture: The Warehouse. Jeremy and Tim begin by spending some time discussing the city of Chicago, a place that despite its massive musical output hasn't really featured in out story so far. A crucible of industrial modernity, they consider its unique historical position, the move from Delta to Chicago Blues, and how it linked to NYC in the mid-70s. We hear about the several early locations of the club that would become The Warehouse, revisit Frankie Knuckles and Larry Levan, and give a shout out to another satellite of the US disco scene, Le Jock. Plus: singing bumblebees, Chaka Khan, and David Mancuso's enduring love of Tescos. Produced by Matt Huxley. Embark on a transatlantic journey through time as special guest Jonathan Gal, the voice of recaps (Episodes 5-13), joins Amy in a captivating conversation. They navigate personal anxieties, delve into historical movements, and reflect on the enduring Jewish experience of being "on the run" from oppression for millennia.Jonathan candidly shares his fears, as a father, husband and resident of an agricultural community along Israel's central-North coast, delving into the complexities of applying for a gun license. He shares perspective gained from a character in Paul Auster's novel 4 3 2 1 and wisdom imparted by his son: “If you're going to run from a bully, you're going to run forever.”Comforted by the notion that interesting questions don't have simple answers, Amy faces the dread of a grim future sealed by the present. She offers an alternative trajectory by way of New York City's storied past, drawing inspiration from Ken Burns' documentaries. Amy dismantles illusions that the city has always been a haven like Larry Levan's Paradise Garage, reflecting on its wild ride – from interracial strife and massive public works projects to bankruptcy and 9/11. Railing against our tendency to take things for granted, she explores the fragility and resilience, multicultural, diverse, and tolerant metropolis, acknowledging how easily it almost didn't come to pass.Acknowledging that there's “nowhere to run to baby, nowhere to hide,” and bolstered by Jonathan's son's wisdom, they affirm their decision not to run anymore and stand their ground. Recorded on October 24 (Day 18).Thanks for tuning in!

In this episode Jeremy is reunited with Tim to explore the early life and times of the legendary DJ Larry Levan. We hear about his youthful friendship with fellow DJ (and future leading light of House) Frankie Knuckles as they embed themselves deep in early 70s dance floor culture, taking us not just to discos but to rent parties, drag balls and The Continental Baths. Naturally, we look at the role David Mancuso played both in inspiring Larry and in advancing his career, and shout out one of his less well-known mentors, T Scott, alongside the ever-present Nicky Siano. Tim and Jeremy also discuss shame, the Hustle and Mick Jagger's strut, and ask the question: should we all be playing more musical theatre records? Boogie (genre): during the 1970s, the term “boogie” described music from the disco and post-disco subcultures. In the 1980s, the term was revitalized in London to refer to a type of African-American dance/funk music. Boogie had a large underground following in London's nightclub scene due to a lack of mainstream radio support. Boogie records were often imported from the U.S. and sometimes labeled as “electro-funk” or “disco-funk.” Although the word “boogie” was initially used to describe disco records, it became more popular as “disco” gained negative connotations. “Boogie” originally appeared in funk, soul, R&B, and disco music from the 1970s, with notable examples including “Jungle Boogie” (1974) and “Boogie Wonderland” (1979). Kashif is considered to be one of the pioneers of boogie music, with his 1983 single “I Just Gotta Have You (Lover Turn Me On)” helping to define the early 1980s boogie sound. Other popular boogie tracks from the 1980s include “Wake Up” (Hamilton Bohannon), “Act Like You Know” (Fat Larry's Band), and “Boogie's Gonna Get Ya” (Rafael Cameron). Boogie artists in the 1980s began experimenting with heavy bass, paving the way for the roots of house music. Hamilton Bohannon, D-Train, and Sharon Redd were among the artists who contributed to this new sound. Some producers, like François Kevorkian and Larry Levan, polished and extended the limits of urban-oriented boogie, while others like Arthur Baker and John “Jellybean” Benitez drew inspiration from European and Japanese technopop music. The latter approach paved the way for electro, and subsequently, freestyle music. In this episode Jeremy takes to the lectern for a two-hour mega-episode on the New Left in the second half of the Twentieth Century (and beyond). Picking up in the 1950s, where our previous episode concluded, we chart the full emergence of the New Left in various locations on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Students for a Democratic Society, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the anti-Vietnam war movement and more. Jeremy spends time explaining the pivotal year of 1968, with its raft of political assassinations, violent disorder at the Chicago Democratic Convention, and the barricades of Paris, set alongside the work of crucial thinkers like EP Thompson and Raymond Williams. Jeremy contests the prevailing notion that the New Left laid the groundwork for the bourgeois individualism of the 80s, showing how its focus on anti-racist, feminist, anti-authoritarian politics, along with demands for maximum democratic freedom, can be traced all the way to the Bernie Sanders movement. Jeremy relates the politics of the New Left to a series of musical scenes, including Krautrock in Germany, proto-punk in Detroit, West Coast acid rock, Feminist post-punk, Hawkwind, the Pet Shop Boys and more. Next episode we return to NYC for our first encounter with Larry Levan. Check out our new website: https://www.loveisthemessagepod.co.uk/ Produced and edited by Matt Huxley. Nicky is a central character in the story of the NYC underground party scene and disco, as well as a frequent interviewee for Tim's books.Nicky discusses his recent book, 'I, DJ: Stonewall to Studio 54', which tells the story of his life behind the decks in New York in the early 70s. We talk about Nicky's early life, how he got his first DJing break, what New York City was like in the 70s, and how he started the Gallery. Nicky also shares stories about his friends Frankie Knuckles and Larry Levan, his work with Alex Rosner on building the perfect sound system, the various early turntablist techniques of his crew of DJs at that time, and his experiences away from the dance floor working with people with HIV/AIDS. We're very grateful to Nicky for generously giving his time, humour and endless stories. In this episode Jeremy and Tim are checking in to Nicky Siano's downtown spot The Gallery, a legendary party space often uttered in the same breath as the Loft, the Paradise Garage and the Warehouse. Nicky was a highly influential and original DJ who had as much as influence on Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles as David Mancuso. We hear a history of the Gallery, setting it within the complex web of 70s Soho, including the temporary closure of the space and its triumphant reopening. The show covers how party spaces were regulated, the regulatory regimes of dancing more generally across time, and the tension that the requirement to promote oneself as a freelancer DJ put on the emergent ethos of the scene. Tim and Jeremy also talk about Studio 54, drugs, the role of lighting in a party setting, and the place of women - and especially women DJs - in downtown party culture. Finally, all this is contrasted repeatedly with what David Mancuso was doing simultaneously as his Loft night moved venues. Produced and edited by Matt Huxley. Tune in, Turn on, Get Down! I have been a casual fan of Manuel Gottsching for a long time but I never really dug into his discography until the last few days with the news of his passing. I don't have time to write much about him so I'll cut & paste a few things from Pitchfork. "Manuel Gottsching, the Ash Ra Tempel bandleader who went on to compose the electronic cornerstone album E2-E4, died last Sunday (December 4). Göttsching made his name in the West Berlin underground scene in the late 1960s and early '70s. He was a core member of Ash Ra Tempel, a krautrock linchpin with revolving members including Tangerine Dream's Klaus Schulze. The loose, shapeshifting outfit released five influential albums between 1971 and 1973. Göttsching's solo debut, 1975's Inventions for Electric Guitar, was subtitled Ash Ra Tempel VI; from then on he mostly produced records under his own name or as Ashra, such as the 1976 classic New Age of Earth. In 1981, after a visit to Schulze, Göttsching improvised the composition that became known as E2-E4, hoping to throw together some listening material for an imminent trip. That mysteriously perfect hourlong exercise, which combined Prophet 10 synth pulses with waves of electronic percussion and electric guitar, came to define his post-krautrock output. After composing the track, Göttsching later recalled, the billionaire and Virgin Records owner Richard Branson invited him to his houseboat and, upon hearing the track, advised Göttsching that it could make him a fortune. But Göttsching decided to release the full improvisation on his friend Schulze's label, without overdubs, in 1984, and it appeared to have little impact. Though E2-E4 sold poorly, it had—unbeknownst to Göttsching—made its way across the Atlantic and into Larry Levan's Paradise Garage sets, as well as the collections of key electronic music innovators. As Pitchfork's Mark Richardson wrote in a 2016 review, the improvisation “wound its way across the world, morphing and changing with formats and remixes, finding new contexts, a music that is constantly in the process of becoming.” It was a nice trip through Gottsching's music making this mix. I hope he is improvising with his buddy Klaus somewhere. Cheers! As part of RA2122, our ongoing celebration of 21 years of club culture, we''ll be featuring some of our favourite DJs from around the world, highlighting the parties or clubs most important to their lives in dance music. It''s safe to say that there would be no house music, no dance music as we know it, without François Kevorkian. The French-born, New York-based DJ started remixing disco records in the mid-''70s, when he was just a teenager, and became a pioneer of the form alongside names like Larry Levan, Tom Moulton and Walter Gibbons. And though he would become a house icon, he became especially known for the trippy "dub" mixes on the B-sides of records, which often eschewed the structure and vocals of the songs he was remixing in favour of excursions into the unknown. It''s that legacy that led him to Deep Space, his Monday-night residency at the once-legendary Meatpacking District club Cielo, which was one of the most beloved (and best-sounding) rooms in Manhattan. Deep Space started at 2002 and ran every Monday for over a decade. The idea was to explore "dub" in all its forms, and to play all kinds of music while manipulating it in real time. The slogan was "Live On The Mixing Board." At Deep Space you would hear all kinds of music. Dub, reggae, dub techno, drum & bass—and later on, as you''ll hear in this mix, dubstep—sure, but also disco, R&B, funk, old-school house. All music was dub in Kevorkian''s hands, and over the years Deep Space became one of the most renowned and consistent parties in New York, a place of refuge and discovery every single Monday (and, eventually, Sunday). This four-hour recording allows you to almost experience what it was like to be in that room—you can even hear the crowd whooping and cheering—as Kevorkian journeys through ultra-deep techno, dubstep and a string of funky disco and post-disco tracks. It''s a sound all his own, and though it was recorded 13 years ago, still sounds full of possibility and potential. Like the future. Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/854
