Spotlight on Composer, Songwriter, Pianist, Bandleader, 11 time Grammy Award winner for Best Latin Album of the Year the amazing Eddie Palmieri
Ray Viera was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. During his childhood he grew up listening to the recordings of the great "Soneros", such as Hector Lavoe, Ismael Rivera, Ismael Miranda, Chamaco Ramirez and Marvin Santiago. Collectively, these artists inspired Ray to pursue his goals, combining their musical influences into his own vocal style and sensibility. At the age of 11, Ray was sent to live with his father in the "Barrio" of Philadelphia. Where he was exposed to many other musical genres. Although he lived outside of his native Puerto Rico, he never lost his cultural roots and musical influences. Ray has worked with many Latin music legends, including Johnny Pacheco, the late Celia Cruz, Yomo Toro, Adalberto Santiago, Papo Lucca, Justo Betancourt, Eddie Palmieri, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Jimmy Bosch, Chino Nunez, The Fania All Stars, and many other greats. He recorded his first album for ATI Records in 1997 produced by Johnny Pacheco with Jovanny Diaz and his Orchestra.Ray has logged over 20 professional recordings where his discography includes background vocals in various genres, including the soundtrack of an Off-Broadway musical entitled "Quien Mato a Hector Lavoe" starring Domingo Quinones, that would later become a major motion picture starring Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony titled “El Cantante”. He sang background vocals for the late Celia Cruz's Grammy winning "La Negra Tiene Tumbao", her final CD; both Eddie Palmieri's 40th anniversary CD, "La Perfecta II" (Grammy nominated) and "Ritmo Caliente", and is the lead singer in Johnny Pacheco's 50th anniversary CD "Entre Amigos"(2004). He also participated in Ricky Gonzalez's "Oasis", singing lead in the songs "Timbalero" and "Ya Era Tiempo". Over the years, he has toured throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America , Africa, and Europe. While striving to realize his dreams, he has continually performed with intense passion and emotion. Many consider Ray one of the new generation of artists who can blend the traditional style of singing with the flexibility of a crooner and a progressive, modern outlook. After many years of being in a background role to some of Salsa's greatest legends, Ray released his debut album, Aqui Esta Ray Viera in 2002. He shows his talent as composer in songs like "Lo Mio Es Cantar", "Borinquen y Cubanacan", and "Corazon Cerrado". He also composed "Tun Tun Suena El Tambor" in Spanish Harlem Orchestra's Grammy award winning album "Across 110th Street". Ray has been a lead singer for the legendary Johnny Pacheco's Tumbao Añejo since 1998. In 2007 Ray released “TROMBAO which he produced and composed nine of the ten songs. “TROMBAO” made it to the second round of the Grammy nomination process in 2008. Ray Viera y Trombao presented its latest work to the public that provided a cultural blending of rhythm that is bursting with Caribbean flavors titled "SAMBUMBIA RADIOACTIVA" in 2013. Today, Ray Viera is taking his talents to the production side and continuing to compose for various projects.Support the show

Dancer, Dreamer and a Wanderer: Jannelle Cortes Founder of GrooveTrips and GrooveFit I can barely sit still as I listen to this episode! BEYOND excited to share someone that I personally know and love very much! Please welcome, a multi-passionate, multi-talented entrepreneur, dancer, creative and leader, Jannelle Cortes. I've known this creative powerhouse since 2005, have studied various styles of dance with her and have traveled with her to Egypt and the Dominican Republic! We met in 2005, when I was manifesting the best belly dance teacher at New York Sports Club in NYC and we (all the shimmy sisters) followed her everywhere, borough to borough just to dance with her! We've traveled from borough to borough and country to country as she expanded GrooveFit to GrooveTrips guiding people to trips such as Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Egypt and more! Many of us, including yours truly, were in her Middle Eastern cardio dance workout video, “ The Belly Dance Workout for Every Body!” She's a passionate, generous and beautiful being whose soul has guided to so many spaces, places and countries to support community, create community and share the magic of dance, culture and connection. Early beginnings, from Baile del Perrito to Ballet, she shares “Ballet was my Yoga.” Dance was not something anyone thought she would pursue full-time and she entered her Fordham University Masters program. Grad school/Corporate World to Full-time dancer and teacher: The moment she realized that The Universe was opening a door to living a life with more passion. Her first belly dance class with Amira Mor filled her with joy and admiration, “I don't know that I have ever felt that kind of exuberance and joy.” The term, “crazy belly dancer” and what it means- I went through that as a student! How Jannelle began taking belly dance students to Turkey, Egypt and Morocco so her students could learn from the land and the people where the music and dance was born. Jannelle shares how creating space for folks to express themselves makes her joyful because she recognizes it may be the only place where we can be other aspects of ourselves. “It provided all types of women, all ages, all bodies to come into class and be celebrated, Jannelle on her dance class teaching. Teaching dance class for Eddie Palmieri at the Savannah Hotel “When you're born with something, you have to feed it. It's you, this is a part of you,” Jannelle Cortes Supporting local artists and small businesses when she travels and why it's important. How Cuba gave her the opportunity to meet organizations and people and feel called to give back through each trip. Exploring her identity as a Dominican woman who comes from an island that has been impacted by colonization, oppression and colorism. How do I heal myself and help others heal? How have my people come about? Her experience of coming home to Ghana and a sense of completion. Ancestral patterns and ancestral gifts that Jannelle has tapped into. Shout out to Ivonne Velasquez and to my Mom and Johanna Olivas and Vanessa Villaverde- same message, “ It is our responsibility to seek happiness for ourselves.” Jannelle closes with some advice for creative entrepreneurs: There is no blueprint for entrepreneurship, most Latinx didn't grow up talking about money so much of the business acumen we have, we've had to earn and learn. You're allowed to recreate yourself, over and over and over again.” BIO: Jannelle Cortes is a choreographer, travel professional, and entrepreneur that grew up in the Maryland area and now resides in New York City and Havana, Cuba. She is the Founder of the Groovefit Dance Company and Groove Trips LLC, both intergenerational companies that promote community, accessibility, and sustainability. As we finally come to the end of our series on Afro-Psychedlia, Tim and Jeremy bring us back to New York, David Mancuso and the dancefloor of The Loft via Puerto Rico, Salsa and the Latin influence on the city in the early '70s. We hear about the mighty Fania Records - a classic example of the sort of small labels who found a commercial audience while still releasing amazing music - and the band they fostered, the Fania All-Stars. We also spend time exploring the catalog of Ray Barretto, who's track Acid featured at the very beginning of the LITM project. Jeremy and Tim also interrogate the idea of New York as a 'melting pot', consider the construction of the Nu Yorican identity, and contrast it to the other cultural and musical formations of the late '60s we've heard about in this series. We're also introduced to Boogaloo, 'the Watusi', and close with Eddie Palmieri's fantastic, epic track 'Un Día Bonito' - a worthy place to end for now. We'll be taking a bit of a summer break and back with a new series in the Autumn - but keep an eye on the feed, we'll be throwing out some extra bits for patrons to tide you over. "The New York Sound of Latin Music" demonstrates how the metropolis transformed the music. Guest Ben Lapidus, author of New York and the International Sound of Latin Music 1940-1990, talks to Georges Collinet and Ned Sublette about how innovations in rhythm and instrument design joined with folklore, jazz, New York's education system, and urban multiculturalism to make a new, world-changing music. We'll hear Eddie Palmieri, Sonny Bravo, Larry Harlow, Jerry González and Fort Apache, Eydie Gormé, and many more. APWW #845 Originally produced in 2021 by Ned Sublette

Jimmy Delgado is best known for his timbale playing, however he is well versed in all elements of Latin percussion. With a career spanning over 5 decades, he has played with Ray Barretto's Big Band, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Harry Belafonte, and many others. He has a discography to long to mention, but just released the new single “Algun Lugar Bajo El Sol” this past February, and has a new album "A Mis Mentores...To My Mentors" just out this March.
