Get ready to plug into the pulse of the underground with Air Tight Episode 145 — your sonic guide through eclectic beats, rebel frequencies, and counter-culture currents. Hosted by The Alex, this episode is a raw, unfiltered ride through new music, underground hits, and the eclectic sounds that mainstream won't touch.
Not exactly nine lives, but the quintessentially Boston band Mission of Burma has had at least two: their initial 1979-1983 foray, which yielded such classics as “That's When I Reach For My Revolver,” “Academy Fight Song” and “That's When I Escaped My Certain Fate”; and an unlikely reunion in the early 2000s, yielding some equally influential albums as well as as a definitive bio-pic, “Not a Photograph: The Mission of Burma Story” in 2006. Through it all, bassist, vocalist and songwriter Clint Conley has persisted, holding the same media gig for over 35 years (!) and raising a family in the wooded environs outside of Boston. Tune in to hear how this sage bassist and song architect found his sound, and continues to hew to the minimalist stylings of spindly bass lines in outings with the Chris Brokaw Rock Band, among others. ALSO! You have until 7/31/25 to enter to win a “like new” (seriously, I played it once) IdiotBox Effects Blower Box Deluxe pedal (video review here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt6URsuLhD4). This is an amazing, bass-specific distortion pedal, with clean signal blend and a low-pass filter - so it will stick out nicely in live settings. It will arrive in its original box with 3M Dual Lock strips on the back, so it's ready for your pedal board. To enter the contest, please send a screenshot of you recommending one episode of this podcast - your favorite interview - in a publicly viewable place - it can be Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or any social media outlet. Send the screenshot to: fourstringspod@gmail.com, and we'll pick one winner at random on 7/31/25. Please note that previous winners of one of our contests are not eligible for this one. We thank the entrants so far - who hail from around the globe - and encourage you to shoot your shot as well. In this episode, I sit down with emerging Dallas hip-hop artist Brandon Lawson. Brandon opens up about his family's deep musical roots and how growing up surrounded by music shaped his journey as a songwriter and performer. From learning instruments at a young age to blending his love of anime and Nickelodeon into his sound, his story is equal parts heartfelt and offbeat. We talk about the origins of some of his tracks, how nostalgia fuels his creativity, and how his music feels like a time capsule for growing up weird in Texas. And don't miss the world premiere of his brand new single Marty McFly 2010.For fans of hip-hop, cartoons, and music made with love.Austin Young:LinktreeBrandon Lawson:ItunesInstagramTikTok GLOAT Entertainment: iTunes*DISCLAIMER: I hereby declare that I do not own the rights to this music/song. Joey is someone that I have always looked up to since meeting in 2010, and was a big reason for me to muster the courage to start a punk band, talk politics, and start my own podcast! He's a HUGE reason this podcast exists!!In this episode, I reflect on 3 profound things that I have expanded on in my own life after Joey first introduced them to me years ago...First is the idea to learn from different perspectives, next is learning about Malcolm X & resistance, and lastly, the concept of community building through music & art. We get heavy & vulnerable on religion, politics, and how we can institute righteous change. Follow Joey's bands: ALL TORN UP!, BOWHEAD, and COP/OUT.➤PLAYLIST:1. New Underground Beats & Underground Culture Vibes on Green Coast Radio!
The boundary between imagination and technology blurs in Lila Tirando a Violeta's mesmerizing sonic experiments. From her early DIY noise experiments in Uruguay to her current position as one of electronic music's most distinctive emerging voices, Lila's creativity has flourished despite—or perhaps because of—the challenges of living with a chronic condition. When health issues confined her to hospitals and home at age 23, Lila found herself transitioning from improvisational performance to structured composition. The internet became both her music school and lifeline, leading to collaborations with artists like Loraine James and Amnesia Scanner—relationships that began digitally before materializing in the physical world. This digital-first approach mirrors the themes in her work, particularly her fascination with David Cronenberg's Videodrome, which she references in her new album "Dream of Snakes."What makes Lila's creative process so compelling is her transformation of limitation into innovation. She samples her own pulsating tinnitus, captures field recordings from hospital rooms, and builds intricate sonic collages without formal training. Though her aesthetic suggests urban futurism, she's found her creative sanctuary in the quiet Irish countryside, where nature and technology intertwine in unexpected ways. Most striking is Lila's openness about navigating the music industry—from including special lighting requests in her rider to dealing with international promoters who expect her to play reggaeton simply because of her South American heritage. If you're enjoying Lost and Sound, please do subscribe and leave a rating or review on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you listen. Musician and artist Goya Gumbani joins Chrystal Genesis in New York's East Village ahead of his live show to talk sound, style, Miles Davis, and his new album, Warlord of the Weejuns. In this episode, the Brooklyn-born, South London-based artist reflects on the cultural influences behind his dreamy, laid-back record, where the storytelling of New York hip-hop meets London's jazz edge. Recorded just after soundcheck, their conversation glides through fashion, food trucks, friendship, and family, with Warlord of the Weejuns, out via Ghostly International, threaded throughout.
